Unit 2 English around the world
阅读理解
A
One Canada, Two Languages
Canada is one of the few nations in the world to have two official languages: English and French. There are 10 provinces in the country but only one of these---Quebec is known as "French Canada". This is because it was founded by French explorers while British adventurers discovered the rest.
Canada left the British empire (帝国) in 1867 to become an independent country, and English and French have been recognized as the official languages ever since. Most people speak English as their first language and the two national television networks broadcast in English throughout the country. Apart from in Quebec and a few places on the east coast, French television is very rare.
The same goes for traffic signs and menus. For example, outside of Quebec, there are only a few places where you'll see traffic signs in French. In restaurants, it's almost impossible to find French on the menu unless you are in the heartland (中心地带) of French Canada. However, all products sold in Canada must, by law, have labels (标签) and instructions in both languages.
In Canada's English speaking provinces, official bilingualism (双语) means that students can choose to complete a special French language course. Under this program, they are taught most of their subjects in French.
If a student begins the course in kindergarten (幼儿园) or Grade One, it is likely that all their lessons will be in French. However, if they start at junior high school,25 percent of the teaching will continue to be in English.
1. How many provinces are there in Canada?
A. Ten.
B. Nine.
C. Eleven.
D. Two.
2. Which country controlled Canada before its independence?
A. France.
B. Britain.
C. America.
D. Germany.
3. Which of the following sentences is right?
A. English is the only official language, though French is also spoken there.
B. The two national television networks broadcast both in English and French.
C. All products sold in Canada must, by law, have labels and instructions in both
English and French.
D. The lessons in kindergarten or Grade One are likely to be only in English.

When it comes to learning a foreign language, many people wonder if they will be able to memorize enough vocabulary. But this question never happens about their mother tongue, and yet, it was a foreign language once. However, among all the questions that new parents ask, no doctor has ever heard: Will my baby be able to learn my language? Be honest. Do you know all the words of your mother tongue? The answer is: no. New words, and new ways of using old words, appear every day. Twenty
years ago, who would have been able to understand a sentence like this: Click here to download your digital book? Nobody. You never stop learning new vocabulary and you never know how long you will need it.
Sometimes, you have the word on the tip of your tongue and it sticks there! But you do know this phenomenon (现象) and don’t think that it is because of a bad memory. You should not give this phenomenon more importance in the language you are learning than in your mother tongue. You need to learn only 2,000 or so basic words to be able to create any phrase you need. You can’t avoid (避) some work in order to learn these necessary words and all the more if you want to learn quickly. And before you consider buying into any method, be sure it is right for you. It is not wise to depend on any method based upon memotechnics (记忆术). The first words seem very easy to learn, so, you buy the course, but then you discover quickly, though too late, that a dozen words later, it is all the more difficult to learn a new word when you have also to learn the trick to memorize it.
4. From the first paragraph, we know that ______.
A. there is no need to know all the words of a foreign language
B. it is honest to answer no to a question you don’t know

D. people find it hard to memorize vocabulary of their language

A. you have no courage to speak the word
B. you just fail to remember the word
C. you are not sure of the word
D. you daren’t open you r mouth to speak the word
6. To learn a foreign language, the author advises you ______.
A. to remember new words according to memotechnics
B. to keep up with new ways of using old words
C. to learn at least 2,000 necessary words
D. to pay more attention to your bad memory
7. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. using old words in a new way
B. learning new words from the context
C. finding a method to memorize vocabulary
D. learning vocabulary of a foreign language

Complete mastery demands continued learning until the age of 10 or 12.”

When I was young I wanted to be a model, so when a national contest was staged, I convinced my parents to take me for an audition(试演). I was selected and told I had potential. They said that for only $900 I could attend a weekend event which dozens of the most prestigious(有声望的) modeling agencies from around the world would attend. At 13, my hopes of fame and fortune clouded all judgment and I begged my parents to let me go. We have never been rich, but they saw my enthusiasm and agreed.
I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For months, any boredom or disappointment I faced was pushed aside because I knew I would soon have the chance to be a real model. I thought I would grace the covers of famous magazines!
Of course, I wasn’t signed, but what hurt the most was being told that if I grew to 5’9”(about 1.75metres) I could be a success. I prayed for a growth spurt (冲刺) because I could not imagine giving up my dream. I made an appointment with a local modeling agency and the agent demanded $500 for classes, $500 for a photo shoot, and $300 for other expenses. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of me begging.
The agency sent me out on a few auditions, but with every day I didn’t receive a call, I grew more depressed. The final straw came in July after I had decided to focus on commercial modeling. There was an open call in New York City. We spent hours driving and another few hours waiting, only to be told that I was too short. I was devastated(感到难以承受的).
Years later, I realized that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I didn’t actually love modeling, just the idea of it. I wanted to be special and I was innocently determined to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future.
11. What’s the main reason why the author wanted to be a model?
A. She won a national contest.
B. She wanted to get reputation and wealth.
C. She was urged by some modeling agencies.
D. She had full potential to be a successful model.
12. What’s the author’s parents’ attitude toward her dream?
A. Encouraging.
B. Worried.
C. Doubtful.
D. Enthusiastic.
13. What was it that made the author end her attempt to become a model?
A. Her parents were strongly against it.
B. She realized that it was impossible for her.
C. Even a local modeling agency turned her down.
D. She realized that she didn’t actually love the idea of modeling.
14. The underlined phrase “The final straw” probably means ______.
A. the last in a series of bad things that happen to make someone very upset,
angry, etc
B. the final result that she was admitted by the model company
C. the final audition given by the agency
D. the decision that she made at last not to be a model any more
15. What did the author learn from her experience of struggling to be a model?
A. Where there’s a will there’s a way.
B. Being a model is not that easy.
C. We should have our own judgment and should not just follow others.
D. We might set unpractical goals but the experiences can help us grow.
