My family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota last year, where the average winter temperature is around 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Once summer ended, everyone went inside to play ice hockey. I’d been on the ice only a couple of times when I was much younger. When I’d fallen and broken my wrist during my second lesson, I’d decided never to put on ice skates again.
Ben, the friend I made in the new city, volunteered to teach me to
skate. Even though he was very patient, I was so embarrassed by my clumsiness that I began to make up excuses for not skating. One day I discovered a faster route home. It took me past a large frozen pond. I noticed a woman teaching a young girl to skate. The girl was attempting to jump and spin in the air.
Over and over, she pushed off the ground with the toe of her skate. And over and over, she landed hard on the ice.
After I had been watching the girl practice for about a week, one afternoon she suddenly lifted off the ground, spun in the air, and landed on her feet!
The next day I bought myself some brand new skates. Every day on the way home I stopped at the pond and wobbled onto the ice, right next to the girl who had landed her jump. As she perfected her twists and tricks, I taught myself to glide and turn. It was hard being a beginner, and when I fell I had to fight the urge to simply give up. Instead, every time I went down, I just picked myself up and started over again. Soon I was able to keep my balance and skate more confidently. In just a few weeks, I was actually ready to practice the speed skating, fast stops, and quick turns needed for ice hockey. When I was finally ready to show Ben my newfound skating ability, he told me I should join the local hockey league. I tried out and was chosen for a team. By the end of the season, I
was part of a winning team.

5. Why did the author mention the girl on the pond
A. To prove the girl was skillful.
B. To suggest the girl inspired him.
C. To show the girl was a quick learner.

6. According to the last paragraph, the author’s training was________.
A. easy and basic
B. hard but rewarding
C. boring and tiring
D. strict but interesting
7. What does the story mainly tell us
A. All roads lead to Rome.

A study has shown how ecotourism in the Philippines has transformed people’s attitudes towards marine (海洋的) conservation.
Researchers from the University of Victoria in Canada and other institutes in Philippines, visited three sites where tourists pay to swim with whale sharks in the wild. They interviewed range of locals in Oslob, Donsol and Pintuyan, including fishers and ex-whale shark hunters. At Oslob, the largest of the three sites, people were more likely to speak about the resulting improvements to their quality of life and an increase in job
opportunities. At the smaller, less profitable sites, responses were more likely to be about the changes in how people behaved towards the sharks.
Dr. Jackie Ziegler, who led the team from the university’s Marine Protected Areas Research Group, said, “Many of the people we spoke to reported they now care about and value whale sharks because of tourism activities. They also e xpressed the community’s emotional connection to the species and the strong need to protect them. Before the introduction of tourist activities, most of the locals admitted to harming the sharks by hitting them with stones, harpoons, paddles, dynamite or r iding them.” In terms of attitudes towards the wider marine environment, the majority of respondents now actively encourage others to care for the ocean and they also use more sustainable (可持续的) fishing practices. The study also acknowledged the potential negative effects of tourism on the marine environment, such as impacts on the health of local coral reefs and of the sharks. It concluded that further studies were needed to assess these impacts before firm conclusions could be drawn regarding the positive impact of whale shark tourism on ocean conservation.
Nevertheless, the researchers say their work suggests ecotourism can be an effective means of strengthening protection. “It was
fascinating to hear the importance so many local Filipino communities place on whale shark tourism. Bringing in the views of the local tour operators to the study was imperative (必要的) in uncovering the true impact of whale shark tourism and the wider benefits to ocean conservation in the Philippines,” Dr. Ziegler added.
8. What do the local people concern least according to paragraph 2
A. Improvements of life.
B. Behaviors towards sharks.
C. Increases of work chances.
D. Relationships between people.
9. Which word can best describe locals’ action towards marine life before ecotourism
A. Protective.
B. Satisfying.
C. Unsustainable.
D. Beneficial.
10. What will be the focus of the future research on tourism
A. Influences on the health of other marine species.
B. Strategies for carrying out marine ecotourism.
C. Benefits from ocean conservation.
D. Importance of protecting the local whale sharks.
11 What may be the best title of the text
A. Ecotourism Has Brought Large Benefits to People
B. Ecotourism Transforms Locals’ Attitudes to Marine Conservation
C. Marine Ecotourism Gives Rise to a New Kind of Business
D. Ecotourism Does Much Good to Marine Life as Before
D 9. C 10. A 11. B

根据第二段最后两句“At Oslob, the largest of the three sites, people were more likely to speak about the resulting improvements to their quality of life and an increase in job opportunities. At the smaller, less profitable sites, responses were more likely to be about the changes in how people behaved towards the sharks.(在三个地点中最大的Oslob,人们更倾向于谈论由此带来的生活质量的改善和就业机会的增加。

根据第三段最后两句“Before the introduction of tourist activities, most of the locals admitted to harming the sharks by hitting them with stones, harpoons, paddles, dynamite or riding them.” In terms of attitudes towards the wider marine environment,
the majority of respondents now actively encourage others to care for the ocean and they also use more sustainable

根据倒数第二段内容“The study also acknowledged the potential negative effects of tourism on the marine environment, such as impacts on the health of local coral reefs and of the sharks. It concluded that further studies were needed to assess these impacts before firm conclusions could be drawn regarding the positive impact of whale shark tourism on ocean conservation.(该研究还承认旅游业对海洋环境的潜在负面影响,例如对当地珊瑚礁和鲨鱼健康的影响。

故选A。

D
Two thirds of the ice in the glaciers (冰川) of the Alps is doomed! These glaciers will melt by the end of the century as global temperatures rise according to a recent study.
Scientists claim that half the ice held in some 4,000 Alpine glaciers will disappear by 2050 due to global warming through the effect of past emissions. After that, even if carbon emissions drop to zero, two-thirds of the ice will still have melted by 2100. If emissions continue to rise at the current rate, the ice tongues will have all but disappeared from Alpine valleys by the end of the century. The most pessimistic prediction tells us that the Alps will be mostly ice-free by 2100. Only isolated ice patches would remain at high altitudes, representing five per cent, at most, of the ice volume seen today.
The researchers warn that the loss of these glaciers will mean much less water is available for farming and hydroelectricity, especially during droughts. It would also affect nature and tourism.
In February, a study found that a third of the huge ice fields in Asia’s towering mountain chains were also under threat for the
same reasons. This will lead to serious consequences for almost two billion people who live downstream. Glaciers along the Hindu Kush and Himalayan range are at higher, colder altitudes. If global carbon emissions are not cut, however, two-thirds of their ice could be gone by 2100.
The latest research combined computer models with real-world data to forecast the fate of the glaciers. It used 2017 as its starting point. Unlike previous work, these models included how the glaciers move down the mountains. Applying this approach to other glaciated mountain chains could improve ice loss forecasts there.
Cutting the emissions from fossil-fuel burning, deforestation and other polluting activities is the biggest factor in minimizing the melting of the ice. The future of these glaciers is indeed at risk, but there is still a possibility of limiting their disappearance.
12. What does the underlined word “doomed” mean in paragraph 1
A. Polluted.
B. Discovered.
C. Endangered.
D. Abandoned.
13. What can we infer from paragraph 2
A. Emissions have much to do with the ice melting.
B. The Alps is expected to lose all its ice by 2100.
C. Ice loss will be avoided with emissions prevented.
D. Large ice pieces will just exist at the mountain top.
14. Why are the Asia’s ice fields mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To explain how glacier melting came about.
B. To imply pollution is a worldwide problem.
C. To show what consequences ice melting will cause.
D. To indicate the Alps is not alone to face ice melting.
15. What is the writer’s attitude towards the future of glaciers
A. Objective.
B. Optimistic.
C. Critical.
D. Doubtful.
C 13. A 14. D 15. A

根据划线词后“These glaciers will melt by the end of the century as global temperatures rise, according to a recent study. (根据最近的一项研究,随着全球气温的上升,这些冰川将在本世纪末融化)”可知,冰川将在本世纪末融化,由此推知,划线词所在句中的“阿尔卑斯山的冰川”也面临同样的威胁,结合选项可知,划线词doomed与endangered同义,意为“有危险的”。

故选C项。

【13题详解】
推理判断题。

根据第二段中“Scientists claim that half the ice held in some 4,000 Alpine glaciers will disappear by 2050 due to global
warming through the effect of past emissions. After that, even if carbon emissions drop to zero, two-thirds of the ice will still have melted by 2100. If emissions continue to rise at the current rate, the ice tongues will have all but disappeared from Alpine valleys by the end of the century.(科学家们预测,到2050年,由于全球变暖,由于过去排放的影响,阿尔卑斯山4000多座冰川中一半的冰将消失。

故选A 项。

根据第四段中“In February, a study found that a th ird of the huge ice fields in Asia’s towering mountain chains were also under threat for the same reasons.(今年2月,一项研究发现,由于同样的原因,亚洲高耸山脉中三分之一的巨大冰原也面临威胁)”可推知,第四段提到亚洲的冰原是为了表明阿尔卑斯山并不是唯一面临冰融化的地方。

通读全文,并结合文章最后一段“Cutting the emissions from fossil-fuel burning, deforestation and other polluting activities is the biggest factor in minimizing the melting of the ice. The future of these glaciers is indeed at risk, but there is still a possibility of

故选A项。

根据上文“What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of wheat straw (当你想到麦秸时,你首先想到的是什么?)”可知,作者以问句的方式引出本文关于麦秸的话题,下文“However, Wu Cui, an intangible cultural inheritor, can turn the straw left over from harvested wheat into beautiful and eye-catching functional artworks. (然而,吴翠作为无形文化传承者,却能把收获小麦留下的秸秆,变成美观醒目的功能性艺术品。

)”可知,吴翠前面提到的人不同,把麦秸变成了艺术品,E项“Most people would probably just see
it as a pile of waste in a farmer's field.

The Origin of Straw Weaving,讲述草编的起源。

F项“The earliest straw-weaving products were discovered at Hemudu Cultural Ruins. (最早的秸秆编织产品是在河姆渡文化遗址发现的。

)”与本段主题一致,故选F项。

【18题详解】
本段的主题为The Process of Straw Weaving,讲述草编的创作过程,上文“Wu explains the process of straw weaving: selection of materials is the first step of a complicated, time-consuming and labor-intensive process that can take weeks, or even months, to complete. You need to sketch (素描) the piece on paper, which requires drawing skills. (吴解释了秸秆编织的过程:材料的选择是一个复杂、耗时和劳动密集型过程的第一步,可能需要数周甚至数月才能完成。

你需要在纸上素描,这需要绘画技巧。

)” 可知,本段讲解草编的创作过程是按步骤顺序在讲解,下文“Even by finishing that process, it does not mean that you will always create a good piece of work, and the hardest part is to make it lifelike.

)”此句指出了完成的草编的质量很重要;B项“Next comes weaving, shaping and preserving of the work.

根据下文“In the past, woven straw items could be found almost in every household in the countryside. But due to the impact of industrialization, manufactured goods have replaced such products, which yield low profits, and there are only about 100 individuals engaging in the work across the country. (过去,几乎在农村的每个家庭都可以找到草编制品。

但由于工业化的冲击,制成品取代了这类产品,利润微薄,全国从事这项工作的人只有100人左右。

)”可知,这里讲述了草编的现状不容乐观;空处为段落的主题句,应该阐述这种情形。

A项“The Current Situation of Straw Weaving(秸秆编织的现状)”符合题意,故选A项。

The Future of Straw Weaving,主要讲述草编的未来发展趋势,上文“From her perspective, straw weaving should respond to people’s needs and preferences, while still drawing inspiration from traditional culture. (在她看来,秸秆编织应该回应人们的需求和喜好,同时仍然从传统文化中汲取灵感。

)”可知,未来的
草编,应跟上时代的步伐,想顾客所想,也要传承传统,根据空后的she says可知,设空处应该是她说的话,G项“Craftspeople should be responsive and creative and constantly update their products (手艺人应该反应灵敏,富有创造力,不断更新他们的产品。
