China Fights Food Waste
Chinese netizens have launched an online campaign against wasting food and called on people to take their leftovers (uneaten food) home after banquets as well as other measures to prevent such waste. Dubbed "eating up your dishes," the move not only echoes the central government's calls for putting an end to extravagant (挥霍的) official banquets, but also reflects citizens' awareness of wasted food. Many netizens have been angered by a photo posted by Xinhua News Agency of some banquets where untouched food was thrown into garbage cans in the south China metropolis of Guangzhou.
A report on CCTV showed a dish worth almost 700 yuan left untouched after a business dinner in a restaurant in central Beijing. A chef at the restaurant said on average, half of the food consumed was eaten and half ended up in the trash.
Recently, nearly 750 restaurants in Beijing have joined the campaign by offering smaller dishes.
The restaurants are also encouraging diners to take their leftovers home.
Now let's take a listen to what bloggers have to say about food waste.
"It will be a time for reducing banquet waste. Not letting food go to waste will be the most fashionable way to celebrate the festival this year."
"It seems that wasting food is not a big deal. But if everybody is indifferent to it, then it could be a disaster. At many parties and banquets, the food ordered is much more than the amount that can be eaten. It has something to do with Chinese people's eating tradition and culture. They think others will look down upon them if they don't order a lot of food or take home the leftovers."
"Well, I think most people won't waste food if they spend their own money. Food waste happens quite often during business banquets. Usually during these banquets, people are busy drinking wine and talking with their business counterparts (职位/作用相当的人)or leaders. So they actually have no time to eat the dishes."

Chinese told to clean their plates to end food waste
A campaign against wasting food is winning over the hearts, minds and stomachs of Chinese, who tend to think it's bad manners if there are not any leftovers at the end of a meal.
A group of 26 citizens started an Internet campaign earlier this year called Guangpan (plates without leftovers) Action. The members produced posters at their own expense
and delivered them to restaurants. The campaign has spread from Beijing
to other cities.
In Shandong province, employees at a hotel made their case, holding
plates that read, “We are the Guangpan tribe. We say no to wasteful
spending.”In Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and other cities, a growing
number of restaurants are serving smaller portions at lower prices, according to media reports.
Wang Lansong, a key member of the 26 citizens group, said, “The fact that our action has drawn so much attention is evidence that many people are feeling guilty about leaving food on their plates.”
Wang said the group were planning to produce a theme song for the effort to further promote their cause.
According to the People’s Daily, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China, gave a directive to end wasteful spending on food in January.
Many Chinese believe that they should order more food than their guests can eat to show their hospitality or show off their wealth. Banquet hosts fear that they may be seen as stingy(小气的) and lose face if nothing is left on the table after their guests finish eating.
China Agricultural University estimates that leftovers at banquets in China every year can feed 200 million people.
According to calculations by the State Administration of Grain, food wasted every year is worth 200 billion yuan.
Separately, 35 million tons of harvested grain -- 6 percent of grain output in 2012 -- go to waste every year during storage, transportation and processing. Grain gathered molds or is eaten by insects, rats or sparrows due to old warehouse facilities and a lack of technical assistance.
When wasted grain is combined with leftover food, the loss is said to be equivalent to the nation’s annual grain imports of more than 50 million tons.
An official of the State Administration of Grain said the situation is distressing in a country where an estimated 128 million people live below the poverty line.

Food wasted in China can feed 200m people
During the famine years in the late 1950s, children ate coal to fill their bellies, wrote Chinese Nobel Prize for Literature winner Mo Yan in his novel "Frog". These days, though, many Chinese have forgotten what it is like to be hungry - restaurants and households throw out an estimated 60 million tons of food a year, enough to feed 200 million people, or 15 per cent of China's population.
It is no wonder China's grain authorities urged people to fast (eat little or no food) in the run-up to World Food Day yesterday. One person taking the lead was Shu Gang, head of the Chengdu grain administration, south-west China. "Many young people have no sense of starvation. Fasting can awaken people's memory of it," he told local media.
China's food refuse has grown yearly, by5 to 10 per cent in recent years, said an environmental scientist. He added that the amount has increased as China becomes more urbanized and living standards improve.
Dr Ren said the wasting of food is more serious in China than in other countries. "They tend to eat together and don't usually finish all the food. This is especially if someone is giving a treat. The host feels a loss of face if no food is left," he said.
For years, Beijing has stressed the importance of conserving food, with little success. Just last year, Beijing approved a plan to set aside16 billion Yuan a year to provide lunches for 26 million schoolchildren in the countryside. Now many staff canteens are posting notices urging people to take only what they can eat.
The discarded food has also created a headache for the authorities, due to the lack of processing plants. In Beijing, for example, about 13,500 tons of food waste is produced daily by households and restaurants, but the capital can process only 800 tons a day. While food waste traditionally ends up as livestock feed, there are growing calls for it to be treated first to prevent the spread of diseases. Food waste in China is also oilier compared with that elsewhere, and so, harder to process.
Ultimately, consumers should order only what they can eat, while restaurants should sort out food garbage for easier recycling. "They need to have a sense of social responsibility," Dr Ren said.
