Dad and Mom had got to go on a four-day business trip. They taught their elder son Daniel and younger daughter Jane how to feed and look after their dog, Spot, how to take good care of themselves—learning to cook if they could, or ordering pizza—with money left on the table—if they were busy, and told them to keep their rooms clean and tidy. They asked Daniel to be in charge.
On the very morning when the parents left, Mom kissed them and said to Daniel gently, “Young man, do take care of Spot and Jane.” Daniel promised, “I will, Mom.”
Too excited to fall asleep again, Daniel and Jane jumped out of bed, calling out each other to get up. Their pet dog, Spot, heard the similar voice and rushed in, with a ball in its mouth. Jane stuck(伸) her head into Daniel’s room,“Spot got up an hour earlier. Let’s walk it.” Daniel said excitedly, “I’m coming, but, Jane, don’t forget to keep your room clean and tidy.” “I will.”
They ran with the dog in the yard and threw the ball away for Spot to bring it back. They had fun playing with Spot the whole morning. Washing Spot was slow and tiring as it was the first time they had done it. Then Daniel settled down to his homework while Jane did her reading with interest.
The following day, Jane begged her brother to order pizza for lunch. Daniel agreed excitedly, “We haven’t tasted that for long and we behave ourselves, right?”After a while, he added, “We should save money, too.” Within half an hour, they treated themselves to a big pizza. However, in the afternoon, Spot looked sick, lying lazily and unwilling to move. Daniel was concerned about the dog and took it to the pet clinic immediately with Jane as their parents had done.

When Dad and Mom arrived a day earlier, they were amazed to find everything in a mess. Mom was angry and shouted, “Listen to me, young man—I left you in charge. 五:课后练笔
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Grandparents often have interesting names. My sister-in-law was known as Mimi. Her husband goes by Peeka. Why? Their firstborn grandchild decided on those names.
My firstborn grandchild named me as well. I will never forget the day Joshua hugged me and, in front of a roomful of people, called me “Doll. My Doll Baby!” From that point on, I was known as Doll or Doll Baby. Even my sons-in-law call me Doll. Friends of my children and grandchildren call me Doll. It’s a given.
For the most part, it’s fine, even endearing, to hear my grandchildren call me Doll. But there was one time… My daughter and her husband were going out of town, so the plan was for me to pick up five-year-old Spencer from kindergarten, take him to their house to wait for Joshua’s school bus, and bring both boys home to spend the night with us. Spencer and I arrived long before the school bus. While we waited for Joshua, Spencer wanted to show me a new trick he learned on his skateboard.
Spencer was pretty good. He had learned how to step on the back of the skateboard so that the front tipped up (一边翘起), and then put his front foot down on the board and take off. Cool!
Then it was my turn. I had played around with skateboards in my day. Of course, they weren’t the high-tech kind of toys my grandchildren enjoyed. Ours were made by mounting the wheels of our old sidewalk roller skates to the bottom of a plank of wood. Still, I had this. I put my right foot on the back of the board and tipped up the front. So far, so good. I brought my left foot down with every intention of rolling forward.
Good intentions. Bad form. I fell hard on my elbow as the skateboard flew across the concrete driveway. My injury was minor, but Spencer raced into the house and got Boo-Boo Bunny from the freezer to bring me comfort. It helped my arm, but not my pride.

Devi looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with a furious frown on her face. “Mom, they’re all little kids! I’m 15 already! This is ridiculous!”
“I know, Devi,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”
Devi had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Devi had been to was the alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Devi was older, her mother had found a new jo b in the city, and Devi faced a new challenge—school field trips to the local pool.
The first day that Devi went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Devi confidently slipped into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Devi let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Devi threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed the ledge (池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim! Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself in a panic.
On the next field trip to the pool, Devi sat on the side on a bench, paralyzed with fear. She huddled with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Devi was upset. “Honey, I’ve signed you up for Angela’s swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon you’ll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she assured Devi, showing photos of Angela with her prize-winning students.注意:

On such a stormy afternoon,my mother took my five-year-old brother,Christopher, and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper.“So many toys,”the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy color,“that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit them all!”
Christopher and I couldn’t have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot, through the cold and biting rain,as fast as our little legs could carry us.We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella, which never worked when she wanted it to.“Christine!Take care of your young brother!”Mother shouted at the top of her voice.
“Christine!I’m going to find the Lego section(乐高积木区)!There’s a new pirate ship I want, and I have four dollars!Maybe I can buy it!”Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly.I only half heard him.I took a right turn and,to my wide-eyed delight, found myself in the midst of the Barbie(芭比) World.

Peter, a 5-year-old boy, showed such great interest in sea shells that he would rush to pick them up with his 3-year-old sister, Shirley. They screamed out their joy as Peter collected his treasure into his pockets. For Peter, sea shells lay shinning on the peaceful beach, waiting for him, just like stars twinkling (闪烁) in the sky. As waves touched them, they seemed to be flowers blooming (绽放)in gentle wind.
One day, Peter was wandering through market with Shirley, with some shells in his pocket. Suddenly Peter found his younger sister was lagging (落后) behind. He stopped and looked back, finding Shirley was standing in front of a toy shop and was staring at something with great interest.
The boy went back to her and asked, “What do you want?” Shirley pointed at the doll, wearing a smile on her innocent face. Peter held his younger sister’s tiny hand, walking into the shop. He tiptoed (踮起脚尖) to reach for the doll, and like a responsible elder brother, gave the precious doll to Shirley. Holding tightly the doll, the sister was very very happy.
The shopkeeper was watching everything and getting amused to see the matured (成熟的) behavior of the boy. Now the boy came to the counter and asked the shopkeeper, “How much does this doll cost, Sir?”
The shopkeeper was a cool man, who had suffered from something in his life. So he asked the boy with love and affection, “Well, what can you pay?” Peter reached into his clothes for money that was intended for these two little guys’ breakfast. Having counted the money, Peter put it carefully on the counter, asking again, “Sir, is it enough for my little sister’s doll?”
The amusing scene just in front of the shopkeeper eventually brought a smile on his face. Shaking his head slightly, he replied, “My boy, I am afraid it seems not to be enough.”
