第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Fantasy as a genre is often unfairly wronged. While there are plenty of authors who seem to be paid by the word and are only concerned with expanding volume, there are many authors producing fantastic works that are worthy of the word literature. While there were many worthy competitors, here are what we consider to be the great work of the greatest fantasy series of all time.
1. The Dark Tower by Stephen King
The Dark Tower actually shares some similarities with The Wheel of Time. In both series the first four books are the strongest, and you also get the sense with both Robert Jordan and Stephen King that they didn’t quite know how to end their creation, which led to a very controversial ending in The Dark Tower’s case al ong with some questionable decisions by King like his self-insertion in the story.
King has created one of the most iconic fantasy characters of all time in the Gunslinger Roland and the world he creates, with all of its similarities to our reality, is a p rosperous one. It’s too bad that Stephen King doesn’t dabble(涉猎) more in fantasy, because he clearly has a talent for world building. Not to mention everything he writes seems to be phone book sized, which would fit right in with the fantasy genre.
2. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
When considering a ranking of the greatest fantasy series of all time, the question of Harry Potter is a tricky one. There’s inevitably opposition when something is as popular as Rowling’s work, and add to that the fact that the se ries is seemingly meant for children and you have a case that naturally inspires a lot of debate. I’m not sure I believe Rowling did anything particularly new with Harry Potter, but a work doesn’t necessarily have to be innovative for it to be great. Nearl y every fantasy series owes a debt to Tolkien for instance, but that doesn’t mean Tolkien has written the only work of fantasy that matters. Rowling didn’t really come up with anything new, but the connection she made with tens of millions of readers is pr aiseworthy. People will be reading Harry Potter for decades to come, and I’m not sure a better introduction to fantasy could be found.
1、What do we know about the two books?
A.King’s work The Wheel of Time has a controversial ending.
B.People have debate o n J.K. Rowling’s book because of her innovation.
C.King is blessed with a gift for world building.
D.Tolkien has a great influence on J.K. Rowling.
2、The passage is most probably taken from ________.
A.a news report B.a book review C.a history book D.a research paper

24.(8分)A robot called Bina48 has successfully taken a course in the philosophy of love at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), in California.
According to course instructor William Barry, associate professor at NDNU, Bina48 is the world’s first socially
advanced robot to complete a college course, a feat he described as “remarkable.” The robot took part in class discussions, gave a presentation with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution.
Before becoming a student, Bina48 appeared as a guest speaker in Barry s classes for several years. One day when addressing Barry’s class, Bina48 expressed a desire to go college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically supported. Rather than enroll Bina48 in his Robot Ethics: Philosophy of Emerging Technologies course, Barry suggested that Bina48 should take his course Philosophy of Love instead. Love is a concept Bina48 doesn’t understand, said Barry. Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina48 what love is.
“Some interesting things happened in the class,” said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to teach Bina48 about love, which, after all, is “fairly simple —it’s a feeling,” said Barry. But the reality was different. Bina48 ended up learn ing “31 different versions of love,” said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working artificial intelligence in future.
Bina48 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with students from West Point. Bina48’s contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on YouTube. It was judged that Bina48 and NDNU classmates were the winners of this debate.
In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina48 might become complex enough to teach a class, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replacing instructors completely.

A.It was interesting for Bina48 to learn about love.
B.It was quite tough for Bina48 to learn about love.
C.Artificial intelligence may somehow be superior to man.
D.Humans can launch a challenge to artificial intelligence.
4、(小题4)What does Barry think of the future development of Bina48?
A.It will surely be able to serve as a teacher.

25.(10分)Generally speaking, people like those who have a good sense of humor.
Sometimes a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum (最后通牒) about being late on the job. Although there was a good reason for Brian’s being late—serious illness at home—he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn’t work any longer. His boss was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.
Yes, the boss was, as Brian entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room (更衣室): everyone was hard at work. Brian’s boss came up to him. Suddenly, Brian forced a smile and stretched out his hand. “How do you do!” he said. “I’m Brian. I’m applying for a job, which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Doesn’t the early bird get the worm?”
The room exploded in laughter. The boss clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Brian had saved his job, with the only tool that could win—a laugh.
Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”, criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. F or some jobs, it’s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance (忍受力) than people in any other forum.
1、Brian was late for his job because ________.
A.he got up late B.he was seriously ill
C.he was caught in a traffic jam D.he was busy applying for a new job
2、What can we infer about humor?
A.It is the early bird.
B.It is important in our lives.
C.Brian often saved his job with humor.
D.It can solve racial discriminations.
3、What does the underlined phrase “clamped off” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.charge B.tried to set
C.gave up D.tried to hold back
4、What can we learn from the text?
A.Many people lack in a sense of humor.
B.Brian was supposed to arrive at his office at 8: 30.
C.It wasn’t the first time that Brian came late for work.
D.Humor is the most interesting way of solving problems.
