Fifteen years ago, I entered the Boston Globe, which was a temple to me then. It wasn’t easy getting hired. But once you were there, I found, you were in.
Globe jobs were life-guaranteed until retirement. For 15 years I had prospered there — moving from an ordinary reporter to a foreign correspondent and finally to a senior editor. I would have a lifetime of security if I stuck with it. Instead, I had made a deci sion to leave. I entered my boss’s office. Would he rage? I wondered. He had a famous temper. “Matt, we have to have a talk,” I began awkwardly. “I came to the Globe when I was twenty-four. Now I’m forty. There’s a lot I want to do in life. I’m resigning.” “To another paper?” he asked. I reached into my coat pocket, but didn’t say anything. I handed him a letter that explained everything. It said that I was leaving to start a new media company. We were at a rare turning point in history. I wanted to be dir ectly engaged in the change. “I'm glad for you,” he said, quite out of my expectation. “I just came from a board of director s’ meeting and it was seventy-five percent discouraging news. Some of that we can deal with. But much of it we can’t, ” he went on. “I wish you all the luck in the world,” he concluded. “And if it doesn’t work out, remember, your star is always high here.”
Then I went out of his office, walking through the newsroom for more good-byes. Everybody was saying congratulations. Everybody —even though I’d be risking all on an unfamiliar venture: all the financial security I had carefully built up.
Later, I had a final talk with Bill Taylor, chairman and publisher of the Boston Globe. He had turned the Globe into a billion-dollar property. “I’m resigning, Bill, ”I said. He listened while I gave him the story. He wasn’t looking angry or discouraged, either. After a pause, he said, “Golly, I wish I were in your shoes.”

Psychologists in Britain have said that the last full week of January is the most depressing time of year and called next Monday “Blue Monday”. Blue is a slang way of saying unhappy.
Mondays are generally seen as the worst day of the week because people feel tired at having to go back to work after a weekend with a different sleep pattern.
There are various reasons why more people feel depressed at this time of year. Many people have unpaid credit card bills for the Christmas presents they bought, and pay day is often not until the end of the month.
As the party season is over, people feel stressed because they have to go back to real life---work; and they may be unhappy with their body image after bingeing on booze, chocolates, and other food at Christmas time.
People may have already failed in their New Year’s resol utions(决定), such as giving up smoking. The bad weather in January can also contribute to people feeling fed up.
Some companies are taking this quite seriously and offering counseling for any staff who is feeling depressed. They hope that helping people as soon as there are signs of depression will avoid absenteeism(旷工). Evidence shows that unreasonable managers who contribute to their staff feeling fed up at this time can expect an uncooperative workforce.
However, it’s not all bad! Many people feel optimis tic at this time, that things can only get better. Psychologists offer suggestions of how to overcome feeling blue. These include spending 15 minutes doing a “gratitude exercise” thinking about and writing down what you are grateful for, such as health, family, friends and so on.
Taking up a new hobby, doing some exercise, going to bed earlier, eating a healthy breakfast, and listening to some exciting music, are all recommended as ways to feel more cheerful. To avoid feeling blue next January, experts say that the best things to do is to plan better next December. Spend less on presents, eat and drink less over the festive period, and make more realistic New Year’s resolutions.
63.According to the text, you must pay the credit card bills for the Christmas present before ______.
A.the end of December B.the end of January
C.Christmas Day D.the last Monday of January
64.What does the underlined word “this” refer to?
A. The bad weather in January.
B. Failure in giving up smoking.
C. People feel blue the last full week of January.
D. People’s failure in their New Year’s resolutions.
65.Which of the following may NOT avoid “blue Monday” in the writer’s opinion? A.Making a better plan for next December B.Doing more exercise C.Making more New Year’s resolution D.Listening to some uplifting music 66.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.The depression can be overcome.
B.Many people feel optimistic.
C.Feeling happy depends on yourselves.
D.To avoid feeling blue, you must eat less.
D
The slogan “a dog is for life, not just for Christmas” has been going strong for 27 years now. Dogs and cats have been popular Christmas gifts in the gifts in the UK and Europe for many years. But some people still haven’t quite got the message.
The slogan still holds good. Some 105,000 dogs were rounded up by local government last year because they had been abandoned, many of them shortly after the festival season.
The main reason given by owners for handing their dogs over to the Dogs Trust is that the dogs need more attention than they can give; behavioral problems and moving home are also reasons given.
But Eleanor Silk, the Trust’s communications director, says, “It’s often four or five months after Christmas, in early summer, when owners find that the dog has got too big and too active, or it hasn’t been trained properly and has caused damage around the home.”
In any case, some organizations that help pets are quick to point out that if you are serious about getting a puppy(小狗) as a pet, Christmas is not the time to do it. Puppies need to get used to their new surroundings, to be introduced to a routine, and to be looked after like small children. It’s hard to meet any of these needs at Christma s. What’s more, pulling a puppy out of a Christmas stocking in itself sends the wrong message to children. It encourages children to think of the puppy as a toy, rather than a responsibility.
Appreciating what you’re taking on with a dog can be a sobering (清醒的) realization. “For life” means thinking about the effect they’ll have on your life. It also infers you will need to care for the dog for its whole life.
67.What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Dogs and Cats—the Most Popular Christmas Gifts.
B. A pet is for Life, Not just for Christmas.
C. How to Take Care of Your Pets over Christmas.
D. Let’s Help Those Abandoned Pets
68.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a reason for pets to be
abandoned?
A. Pets spread some diseases.
B. Pets damage some things in the house.
C. The owners can’t take good care of the pets.
D. The owners have to move to other places.
69. The fifth paragraph mainly tells us________.
A. how to take best care of Christmas pets
B. the right time to have a puppy as a pet
C. the reasons why Christmas is not the time to get a pet
D. the worries about Christmas pets from organizations that help pets
70. Why is the author against the idea of putting a dog in the Christmas stocking as a
Christmas gift?
A. Because these dogs can still cause damage.
B. Because children will not take dogs seriously.
C. Because children don’t like to have dogs as Christmas gifts.
D. Because a Christmas stocking is not big enough to put a dog in.

书面表达:
Dear Chen Li,
I’m glad to hear from you. You asked me about the difficulties you may meet with when you get here in UK. Now, I’d like to tell you something
about it.
First, you may have the problem about the language you think you are well prepared. You may find it difficult to communicate with the natives,
because many of them have a strong accent. Besides, you may not get used to
the western food here or even hate to have it. What’s more, you may feel
lonely and miss your family and friends, especially in the very beginning.
However, you needn’t worry about it. Several weeks later, you will get used to everything here and love the place, and I’ll also try my best to help
you when necessary.
Best wishes!
Yours,

That’s why I admire him.
W: But he strikes me as someone who you just can’t trust.
M: Just can’t trust? Why do you say that?
W: Ah, there he comes. I see him running this way.

W: What’s this? We just finished our meal and you are not smoking? Don’t tell me you quit.
M: Indeed Sharon, I quit smoking just over two months ago. I am happier than ever now that I am rid of that disgusting habit.
W: You have been a smoker for as long as I can remember, and I have known you for at least 10 years.
M: Yes, I was a smoker for more than half of my life. Quitting was the best decision I ever made. W: Was it easy? I remember you used to smoke a pack a day.
M: Well, the first three days were hell. But after that it was easy. I just kept telling myself to try harder and not give in to the desire to smoke.
W: Looks like yo u didn’t gain much weight. I heard most people gain a lot of weight after quitting smoking.
M: Well, at first I was eating constantly to try to occupy myself and avoid smoking. But then I started to exercise a lot and that helped me work off the stress of not smoking.
W: Good for you. I am glad to see you are both happy and healthy.
M: I’m saving a lot of money now too.

Dear Sir or Madam,
Last Thursday, I traveled on the 8:00 a.m. train from Glasgow t o London King’s Cross and I was quite angry with the service of your company.
The train didn’t come on time, so it was forty minutes late when it left Glasgow. A man at the station apologized to us, but he didn’t give us any reasons for the delay. We then had further delays on the way, and we were late by an additional thirty minutes. As a result, I missed my plane from London to Frankfurt and had to wait for several hours.
What’s more, the service on the train was very poor. The trip took more than five hours, but only soft drinks were sold on the train. Worst of all, something was wrong with the air conditioning and it got extremely hot on the train. Just before we reached King’s Cross, the temperature was over 40℃.
Because of your poor service, I feel you should compensate me.
I look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully,
David Robemon。
