第三部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A
With Apple widely expected to release its iPhone 5 on Tuesday,Apple addicts across the world are getting ready for their latest fix.But should we really characterize the intense consumer devotion to the iPhone as an addiction?A recent experiment I carried out suggests that drug-related terms like “addiction” and “fix” aren’t as scientifically accurate as a word to describe our most cherished personal relationships. That word is “love”.
This past summer,I gathered a group of 20 babies between the ages of 14 and 20 months.I handed each one a BlackBerry. No sooner had the babies grasped the phones than they swiped their little fingers across the screens as if they were iPhones, seemingly expecting the screens to come to life.It appears that a whole new generation is being primed to explore the world of electronics in an Apple-approved way.
Friends who have accidentally left home without their iPhones tell me they feel stressed,cut-off and somehow unwholesome. That sounds a lot like separation anxiety to me.Not long ago,I headed an effort to identify the 10 most powerful, affecting sounds in the world.I found that a vibrating phone came in third, behind only the Intel chime and the sound of a baby giggling.Phantom vibration syndrome(幽灵振动综合症) is the term I use to describe our habit of scrambling for a cellphone we feel rippling(振铃) in our pocket, only to find out we are mistaken. We check our phones for emails and texts countless times a day, almost as if we can get others to text, call, email or Skype us.
So are our smart phones addictive, medically speaking? Some psychologists suggest that using our iPhones and BlackBerrys may tap into the same associative learning pathways in the brain that make other habitual behaviors—like gambling—so addictive. As we embrace new technology that does everything but kiss us on the mouth,we risk cutting ourselves off from human communication.
56.What does the author mean by mentioning the word “love”?
A.People are getting ready for the new iPhone.
B.Addiction isn’t a correct word.
C.The recent experiment is scientific.
D.People can’t go without modern technology.
57.The author handed each baby a BlackBerry to________.
A.make the screens come to life
B.carry out an experiment
C.amuse the babies
D.explore the electronic world
58.It can be inferred from the passage that________.
A.human beings enjoy more convenience now
B.science and technology does potential harm
C.using iPhones can develop our brains
D.the iPhone is a good companion
59.What is the author’s attitude toward the iPhone?
A.People should make good use of it.
B.People should make it our best friend.
C.People should avoid being addicted to it.
D.People should not use it in gambling.

After 859 days and 6,000 miles,British explorer Ed Stafford became the first man to walk the entire length of the Amazon. He started in Peru, and finished his adventure as he reached the Maruda beach in Brazil.
Mr.Stafford dropped at the side of the road a few hours before reaching his final destination. But he just stood up and made it to the Maruda beach on Brazil’s northern coast, accompanied by Sanchez Rivera,31,who had been his partner during the last five months of the whole journey.
Mr.Stafford, who always knew that it was possible to walk along the Amazon, said,“It had been quite a hard journey but I just couldn’t consider giving up.”Although the Amazon measures 4,000 miles,he had to walk an extra 2,000 miles up and down mountains and through forests to accomplish it.
He began on April 2,2008,with a walking partner Luke Collyer,37,an instructor of outdoor activities. But before three months were out,the pair had a quarrel. They parted and Mr.Collyer returned to the UK.Mr.Stafford advertised for a new walking partner and was joined by Sanchez Rivera. The pair made their way through Peru,Colombia and Brazil. In Peru,Mr.Stafford and his
partner had been put into prison as murder suspects. They were set free after 48 hours.
After arriving at the destination,Mr.Stafford said,“All I want now are a fish dish and a nice cold beer.”
Ranulph Fiennes, the world’s leading explorer, spoke of Stafford’s achievement,“One of the most impressive aspects of his performance throughout this hard journey is Mr.Stafford’s great determination to succeed. On an almost daily basis,he must have faced difficulties which would hold most people back. The strong will like his is truly needed by anyone who wants to succeed.”

Fluency in another language is one of the most important aims of a newcomer to another country. In addition, understanding the culture and learning to communicate comfortably with people of that culture are as important as learning the rules of the nguage learning and culture learning go together and may take a long time.
Sometimes people feel that they understand a culture after a few weeks or months.People do learn a lot when they first begin living in another culture, but this is only the first stage of learning. It usually involves things like learning everyday activities and some basic customs.
To really understand another culture, people have to go beyond the first stage. This is
challenge because it is often difficult to know what to learn.Much of what we call “culture” is hard to see.
Culture is like an iceberg.Picture in your mind a huge iceberg in the ocean. The only part of the iceberg that you see is the tip.You don’t see the rest of the iceberg because it is hidden from sight in the water. It is easy to forget that it is there. Most of the iceberg is deep within the ocean, just as much of a culture is deep within its people.
When you meet someone from another culture, certain culture differences are obvious:You hear another language or you hear your own language spoken with an accent. You see different foods, clothes and sometimes physical characteristics of people. You observe new customs or habits, such as the use of chopsticks, and, bowing or kissing on both cheeks as a greeting. These differences are interesting and important, but they are usually not too difficult to understand. They are visible so they are seen easily and quickly.
The part of culture that is like the underwater part of the iceberg consists_of assumptions, communication styles, values, and beliefs about what is right and wrong. The hidden part of culture affects much of a person’s way of thinking and communicating. It is the meaning behind his or her verbal(言语的) and nonverbal language.Learning to communicate well with people from another culture involves becoming aware of the hidden part of culture.
64.What’s the subject of this passage?
A.Learning about culture.
B.Language learning.
C.The hidden part of the iceberg.
D.Fluency in another language.
65.What is learning about culture?
A.Learning the hidden part of the iceberg, which is underwater.
B.Learning everyday activities and some basic customs.
C.Learning the culture of an iceberg.
D.Learning the visible as well as the hidden differences of culture.
66.The underlined phrase “consists of” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “________”.A.lies in B.is made up of
C.agrees with D.is different from
67.What conclusion can we draw after reading this passage?
A.Values and beliefs are like the tip of the iceberg.
B.People often become aware of the hidden part of culture.
C.The tip of the iceberg is larger than the hidden part.
D.The hidden part of culture has a great effect on people’s communication styles.
D
Two billion children in the developing world can’t receive good education—the key to human development. However, technology offers an answer which allows the poor in developing countries to learn. It is a tool which holds the ability to change the lives of the poor,as it provides a means of learning and communicating.
Educational programs must break away from old systems.New companies such as One Laptop(笔记本电脑) Per Child (OLPC),an organization founded by MIT Professor Nicholas Negroponte have been active in solving the world’s education problem.
The Internet has changed the world, allowing educational services to help with the global fight against poverty.Khan Academy is one such service.Like OLPC,it is an organization founded by Harvard Business School graduate Salman Khan with the task of “providing a world-class education to anyone, anywhere.”The education offered includes a large number of math-related topics.
The GMAT Pill Review is another company that trains MBA candidates(应考人) worldwide to prepare for the GMAT exam on both the Quant and Verbal section.Founded by Stanford graduate Zeke Lee,the company offers services which are priced at about 75% less than other similar programs. It allows students from developing countries who might not be able to afford similar courses to have access to these services.
Whether paid or free these services provide educational opportunities to those who would never have had the chance in the past.As a result of the technology revolution(革新),business schools may see more students from different corners of the world.Because of the Internet, people in developing nations have access to better and more affordable educational opportunities.More and more people will try to improve their lives through educational opportunities outside of their homeland—an idea usually uncommon in developing countries.
68.According to the text,technology can ________.
A.improve people’s reading ability
B.solve the problems facing the whole world
C.help the poor to reduce poverty
D.cause poverty in developing countries
69.Which of the following about GMAT Pill Review is TRUE?
A.It only accepts students from developing countries.
B.It was started by Professor Nicholas Negroponte.
C.It charges students about 25 percent of other similar programs.
D.The education it offers includes a lot of math-related topics.
70.In the past,people in developing countries ________.
A.had no educational opportunities in their homeland
B.seldom thought of receiving foreign education to change themselves
C.always believed education was of great importance
D.wouldn’t leave their homeland to reduce poverty
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

选项中有两项为多余选项。

Parents and doctors have the same worry over especially low birthweight newborns.__71__ A trend has therefore developed to make special formulas(配方) of extra nutrients and protein-rich foods for these tiny babies.Unfortunately,a British study has found that this practice could have negative long-term effects, such as high blood pressure in adulthood.
Between 1993 and 1995,Atul Singhal of the Institute of Child Health and his colleagues researched 299 full-term newborns, each of whom weighed very little for their age.The babies’moms had decided not to breastfeed(用母乳喂养).
__72__ The rest received a formula with more nutrients and 28 percent more protein than the standard formula. The growth of all of these children was compared to that of 175 similarly low birthweight babies whose mothers had chosen to breastfeed their children for their first 9 months.__73__ They found 83 babies from the normal-formula group,70 babies from the extra-formula group, and 95 babies from the breastfeed group.
__74__ According to the latest data, children who had received the extra formula had significantly higher blood pressure than those in the other two groups.
Seven human tests have indeed shown that when infants are overfed before being stopped breastfeeding, they have an increased possibility to become fat as youngsters.
No matter how big a child is at birth,he or she will probably reach the same adult height no matter how quickly the baby grows. But reaching one’s adult size at a slow-to-moderate speed may have a lot of benefits,as Singhal says.__75__
A.Half of these children were given a normal infant(幼儿) formula for 9 months.
B.When they grow up,they might have high blood pressure.
C.These babies have very little energy because they are so small.
D.Six to eight years later, the researchers gave the children a series of measurements and tests. E.The results were quite surprising.
F.Tiny babies will grow much slower if they are not specially fed.
G.His advice to parents:Be patient.Don’t rush a child’s growth.

Studying Abroad
Attending schools abroad has many advantages.Firstly,we can widen our vision and broaden our minds.Secondly,we can visit famous scenic spots and make friends with the local people.Thirdly,we can use the foreign language in our daily life so that our ability in the second language may be improved quickly.
However, there are also some disadvantages in attending a foreign school. The most serious problem is the language barrier.Furthermore, the cost of living is much higher than that in our country,so most students have to find part-time jobs to support themselves.Faced with these difficulties, many students find themselves unable to pay full attention to their studies and learn little.
On the whole,it is a good thing to study abroad. However, one can’t lose sight of the disadvantages.。
