Many schools across the US hold graduation ceremonies this time of year. In some schools, even 5 and 6-year-olds observe their graduation from kindergarten. And so can older people, much older. Meet 70-year-old Jerry Reid, who just graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He earned a bachelor’s degree.
Mr. Reid might not look like the average college student; his hair is definitely grayer. But still Jerry Reid’s age is easy to forget, other UV A students know him as one of their own. Mr. Reid sat into the “Hoo Crew,” a group that cheers loudly for the school at sports events. He also joined a men’s group on campus. He sang drinking songs along with many other students. Mr. Reid’s school friends say they can talk to him just about anything.
About a half century ago, in his 20s, Mr. Reid was not in school. Instead, he was racing cars and chasing girls. But he says his friend Bill invited him to UVA parties. “Bill told me what a terrible life I had unless I came up here and went to school with him,” said Reid.
That was in 1963. Jerry Reid says it took him 48 years to take that advice. In 2011, he entered college. UV A Professor Luke Wright says Mr. Reid influences students. He opened the minds of the young adults. The teacher says Mr. Reid showed them that life does not end at 40. Instead, the 70-year-old college graduate believes that getting older can be the beginning of a dream.
“Remember that path that you left waits for you. It’s there. It’s yours. All you must do is to get out of your own way and get back to it. And, that’s exactly what I did,” said Reid. Mr. Reid says that he and his wife Susan now would take some time off to enjoy his college degree. Then, he’ll return to UV A to begin studying for his graduate degree.

Outer space is getting spicier, thanks to a new NASA initiative to add a little more flavor to astronauts’ diets.
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are growing red and green chile peppers for the very first time. A team of researchers at the Kennedy Space Center planted 48 seeds in a device called a science carrier, which has clay for roots to grow in and a specially formulated controlled-release fertilizer. The device fixes into the Advanced Plant Habitat, one of three plant growth rooms onboard.
“The APH is the largest plant growth facility on the space station and has180 sensors and controls for monitoring plant growth and the environment,” said project manager Nicole Dufour. “It is a diverse growth room, and it allows us to help control the experiment from Kennedy, reducing the time astronauts spend tending to the crops.”
The peppers will spend about four months growing before they can be harvested and eaten, marking the first time astronauts have cultivated peppers on the station from seeds to maturity.
“It is one of the most complex plant experiments on the station to date because of the long germination and growing times,” said Matt Romeyn. “We have previously tested flowering to increase the chance for a successful harvest because astronauts will have to pollinate the peppers to grow fruit.” Researchers will monitor the growth of the peppers and compare them with a control group on Earth.
“The challenge is the ability to feed crews in low-Earth orbit, and then to sustain explorers during future missions beyond low-Earth orbit to destinations including the Moon
extensive processing.”
“This is important because the food astronauts eat needs to be as good as the rest of the equipment. To successfully send people to Mars and bring them back to Earth, we will not only require the most nutritious foods, but the best tasting ones as well.”

A.Magical.B.Humorous.C.Romantic.D.Scientific. 9.According to Nicole, the crops in the APH_____________.
A.are mainly growing in a water tank B.grow under the monitor of phones
C.don’t need fertilizer to grow well D.are being looked after by people on Earth 10.How will astronauts help grow peppers?
A.By getting the peppers pollinated.B.By recording the peppers’ growth.
C.By watering the peppers on time.D.By keeping the growing room warm. 11.Why do astronauts test to grow crops in 1SS?
A.To solve the food problem on Earth.B.To prepare plants’ growth in other
planets.
C.To cultivate crops of no extensive processing.D.To enrich astronauts’ diets on

If electric bikes haven’t caught your attention yet, here’s one that might. Okapi, a Boston-based start-up, is producing a unique e-bike that bridges the gap between motorcycles and ordinary bikes.
These aren’t normal bikes. If the futuristic appearance doesn’t give them away, the specs (规格) will: Okapi’s bikes have an all-electric range of up to 40 miles and a top speed of around 30 mph. Those aren’t crazy numbers, but they are more than adequate for an ordinary bike. The company’s selling its bikes for just under $3,000. That’s in line with other e-bikes’ pricing, but Okapi’s bikes look more appealing than the others, which try (with varying degrees of success) to look like normal bicycles.
The bikes’ full suspension, hidden storage, and 1,000-watt motor all add up to a fun ride. Okapi’s design appears to be stronger and more able to handle the bumps (碰撞) than many other electric bikes, some of which appear to be modeled after old models. The main downside to Okapi’s design is that it supports a maximum of 280 pounds, which may stop
Okapi’s approach to the e-bike is a little different from others’. While more than one company tries to hide their electric powertrain (动力系统) underneath slim bodywork, Okapi puts it all out for the world to see in a big, square battery pack. There’s almost a futuristic dirt bike look to the bike, which is less awkward than it sounds.
Electric bikes are getting cheaper, almost every day, but Okapi’s product charges a high price: The Starter Edition bike costs $2,989.98. The good news is that Okapi’s bike looks better and stronger than many offerings on the market today.
Though they’re not the most mainstream product out there, e-bikes are worth the coin at almost any price. If you’re considering buying an electric bike, do it. E-bikes absolutely offer you an enjoyable and exciting experience, even on the cheaper end.
12.What do we know about Okapi’s new bike?
A.Its look is normal.B.Its speed is steady.
C.It has a lower price.D.It has a limited load.
13.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The battery pack.B.Slim bodywork.
C.The electric powertrain.D.Okapi’s approach.
14.What is the author’s attitude toward e-bikes?
A.Objective.B.Unclear.
C.Conservative.D.Supportive.
15.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.E-bikes: Cooler than You Think
B.E-bikes: a Future Leader of Bikes
C.E-bikes: a Better Replacement for Cars
D.E-bikes: a Mainstream Way of Transportation

My mother used to ask me what is the most important part of the body. Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correct answer.
When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, ''My ears, Mommy.'' She said, ''No. Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon.''
Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had contemplated (考虑)the correct answer. So this time I told her, ''Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes.” She looked at me and told me, “You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind.
Over the years my mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was : ''No, but you are getting smarter every year, my child.''
Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final goodbye to Grandpa. She asked me,''Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?'' I was shocked when she asked me this on this occasion. I always thought this was a game between her and me.She saw the confusion on my face and told, ''This question is very important. How you answer it shows whether you have learned about life. ''For every body part you gave me in the past, I have told you were wrong and I have given a reason why. But today is the day you will know the answer.
I looked puzzled.
