If you have, what have you done? If you haven’t, what do you plan to do?I should thank my parents for bring me this world, giving me life and educated me.I should thank my parents for brought me up from a child who doesn’t know anything to a manwho will build his own career.I should thank my parents for giving me the chance to experience the richness of the world.I should thank my teachers for giving me the knowledge and improve our ability.I should thank my teachers for teaching me the principle of life such as honesty, responsibility, tolerance and never give up.I should thank my friends for giving me the courage to overcome difficulties when I am in atough time and my mood fall down to the bottom.I should thank my friends for bringing me tears and happiness during my growth, lighten thedarkness in my life.To my parents, what I have done at this moment is that to care for them by giving them a call every week. I also should work hard, have a regular exercise and build a strong body. In the future, if I work in another place and cannot live with them, I plan to back home regularly and spend more time to keep them company. To my teachers, what I have done is that sending greeting cards at Spring Festival and sending them greeting messages at Teachers’ day. I plan to write letters to them in my free time.To my friends, what I have done is that keeping in touch with them and sending them a greeting message or a gift at their birthday. Which holidays are the mostappropriate?Yes, holidays are a very good time to express gratitude. If I want to express gratitude to my parents, Mother’s day and Father’s day are the mostappropriate. If I want to thank my teachers, I think Teacher’s day is the mo st appropriate. If I want to show my gratitude to my lover in the future, the Valentines’ day is the most appropriate. But if I miss all of these holidays to express gratitude to them, I think the Spring Festival is alsoa good time to show my thanks.3.Do you think it is necessary for the Chinese to celebrate Western festivals? No, I don’t think so for it is not necessary. But I don’t mean that we cannot celebrate theseWestern festivals. I don’t think it’s necessary to find a definite answer to whether we C hinese should celebrate the foreign festivals or not. We ought to respect others’ decision instead of interference in their choices. It’s not a bad thing for the people to take advantage of the western festivals, entertaining themselves, getting together and exchanging greetings. But as we all know that we have a lot of traditional festivals are now forgotten by some people of our generation. They have lost their interest in our traditional festivals such as Tomb-sweeping day, Dragon-boat festival, Double Ninth Festival, etc. In general, the Chinese young men almost don’t know the profound implications of our traditional Chinese festivals. Instead they are familiar with the western festivals and go after them like a flock of ducks. Obviously, this is a situation that we do not want to see.I think i t is right to lay emphasis on our traditional festivals but it’s not proper to reject theforeign ones on this account. In fact, western festivals like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, which have tak en root in our country and becoming popular festivals among our people. They are a good time to express our gratitude to our relatives. All in all, it’s natural for the Chinese people, especially our young people, to take part in the western festival activities, relaxing and relieving themselves. I think if you are interested in the celebration of the western festivals, just join it and enjoy yourself. If you are not interested in it, you can ignore them but don’t complain and make criticism.4.It is sometimes claimed that many festivals have been created just toencourage people to spend money. Do you agree? No, I don’t agree with that.It is common knowledge that every nation has its own special festivals with colorfulbackgrounds, which are closely connected with its special history or excellent culture. Sofestivals are the products of the sedimentary accretion of a nation’s culture over thousands of years. Some people think so, as you just said, is probably because people often spend much money during a festival. Well, I think people spend more money during a festival than atnormal times is reasonable because it needs money to buy different things to celebrate afestival. To the businessmen, festivals are a good time to increase income. To the consumers, they also are willing to pay at this special time. The view that festivals only have been created to encourage people to spend money is too simple and too narrow. I think people spend more money during a festival is a win-win situation to the whole society.Unit 5Topics for Discussion1.Is it enough to help only those people we know?Well, I think that depends. The pre-requisite of helping others is that you are a man who can offer help. The most important thing to measure it’s enough or not is that your pe rsonal ability. If you are a man who needs help, there is no need for us to talk about this issue. If you are a merchant who has a highincome, I think it’s not enough to help only those people you know. If you are a student who has no income and needs par ents’ money to live, I think it’s enough to help those people you know.Using one sentence to conclude my idea is that ‘w ith great power, comes great responsibility’.2.What is the relationship between one’s attitude to life and one’s fate? Doesthe former determine the latter or is it the other way round?Well, I think our life is truly in the hands of fate from the day we are born because we cannot choose our parents and it has no relationship with our attitude to life. But when we are born to the world, we get the chance to choose the attitude to life which will partly determines our latter life. As time goes by, the attitude you choose will show an impact on your life and your fate will be changed to some degree. But your attitude to life is only one cause to your fate, not the direct cause.Yes, to a large extend, I think the former determines the latter. Because what you did in theformer has a direct impact on your latter just like if I keep doing exercise for one hour, of course,I will have a strong body one or two years later. But if I am a good student in the university, does that mean I will have a high paid job in the future? I think it also related to your personal fate.3.Do you think success is due more to luck and opportunity or to diligence? Why?In my opinion, luck, opportunity and diligence are all important to success, but success is due more to one’s diligence.Generally speaking, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, but only those who are prepared adequately and diligent can make use of them to achieve their purpose.Opportunities only come to the well-prepared person who bears perseverance and perspiration and it can be created by diligent people. Diligence is the fundamental pre-condition, which can change opportunity into success. Diligence is the first key factor to success, that is, to be diligent means to work with full energy and think with full effort. To be diligent means to practice with complete dedication and constant searching for a better method. Diligence helps us removeignorance, overcome difficulties, and enlighten our minds. There is no doubt that if you want to achieve something or intend to fulfill one of your ambitions, you must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you.。

It was special to me because it combines the beauty of nature with a rich historical heritage.Whitby is situated on the north coast, surrounded by stunning cliffs and the sea. The view from the cliffs is breathtaking, especially at sunset when the sky turns a deep shade of orange. The village itself is charming, with cobblestone streets and old wooden buildings. It feels like stepping into a time machine and going back to a simpler, slower pace of life. But apart from its natural beauty, Whitby also has a fascinating history. It's famous for being a key stop on the Underground Railway during the 19th century, when it was used as a refuge for escaped slaves. There are still some of the original hideouts and tunnels in the area, which are now open to the public. Visiting these places gave me a sense of the resilience and determination of the people who once lived there.Overall, Whitby was a magical experience. It's a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of modern life, connect with nature, and immerse yourself in a rich historical context. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and memorable travel destination."**Analysis:**The candidate's response is well-structured and coherent, covering both the natural beauty and historical significance of Whitby. 高考英语口语考试范文3
高考英语口语考试范文3高考英语口语考试范文1. Money and HappinessSome people think that if they have money, they will be happy. I am afraid not. For example, anyone who is not healthy will not be happy, though he has a lot of money. Some rich men have few true friends, why? Perhaps they think that they are different from ordinary people, and maybe people like their money. When they get much money, they become very strange, their friends turn away from them. At last, those rich men become lonely. Are they happy? The answer is clear. They are not happy. In a word, money can not buy happiness, which is an unchangeable truth.高考英语口语考试范文2. One Child Policy in the Chinese FamilyAs we all know, china has a very large population. But our natural resources are very limited and many people are still very poor, especially in the remote areas. In such a big country, food can not be well supplied to everybody. Thats the reason why our government requires every Chinese family should have one child. In the old society, people had a big family and their children could not be given a good education. However, in the modern society, every family can afford their children a very good education. Only by doing so can the quality of our Chinese be raised. I am strongly in favor of the policy: Its better to have a child in every family.高考英语口语考试范文3. Teenage SmokingThere has been an alarming increase in teenage smoking in the past 20 years. This fact has become a question that we must pay attention to. The factors for this case are complex. First, I think curiosity is the main reason. Many youngsters want to experience the pleasure of smoking when they see others doing that, and they also want to have a try, the second factor is also psychological. As the youngsters havent realized the harm of taking up this habit, they only think that smoking shows maturity. They want to be regarded as the grown-ups through smoking. For all these reasons, it comes as no surprise that teenage smoking has become a serious social problem.高考英语口语考试范文4.The Value of TimeA proverb says:“ Time is money.” But in my opinion, time is even more precious than money. Why? Because when money is spent, we can earn it back. However, when time is gone, it will never return. This is the reason why we must value time. It goes without saying that the time we can use is unusually limited. Hence, even an hour is extremely precious. We should make full use of our time to do useful things. As students we must not relax our efforts to engage in our studies so as to serve society and our nation in the future. In a word, we should get into the good habit of saving time. Do not put off what can be done today until tomorrow.高考英语口语考试范文5. Water and LifeLife depends on water. So water is one of the most important things in our life. However, according to a recent survey we find water dirtier and dirtier, and even polluted by the near by factories. I can hardly imagine what the world would be if we continued to use the polluted water. On the one hand, some kinds of animals are dying out. Fish suffer fromthe dirty and poisonous water more directly, so we are more likely to find it difficult to see fish swimming in the river then ever before.高考英语口语考试范文6.Children Under PressureIn recent years, childrens schoolbags on their back are getting heavier and heavier. Their burden still cant be relieved in spite of social protests. There are several reasons for my viewpoint. For one thing, most parents want their children to be the top students. Therefore, children are forced to crush their time to study more. For another, children themselves under the pressure want to score high. They also want to get a golden opportunity to enter key schools and they think good marks can provide them with success. Obviously, we can see that the problem about the enormous pressure on children wont be lightened in a short time.高考英语口语考试范文7. How to Solve the Traffic ProblemWhen we go out in rush hours, we are always caught in a traffic jam. Many people complain about the heavy traffic which has seriously influenced peoples life. It has become one of the biggest problems in the big cities like Shanghai. Some suggest the government should construct more roads. In this way, the traffic density can be obviously reduced and the buses and cars can go faster. Others suggest that the number of bicycles and cars should be limited, but it is very inconvenient to people. In short, the government should develop proper traffic means and bring more benefit to people in the near future.高考英语口语考试范文8. How to Solve the Energy CrisisAccording to a recent survey, energy crisis has become one of the biggest problems in the world. If we dont take any measures, sooner orlater we will be threatened by the energy crisis. In many countries, people who have realized the problem have suggested the governments should narrow the great drain on the countrys resources when it isnt necessary enough to save the limited resources. In addition, the inhabitants and factories should limit their serious consumption of energy. The best and effective way, I think, is to develop new energy such as solar energy, unclear energy and other unknown energy.高考英语口语考试范文9.About friendsA man without a friend is only half a man. In another word, everyone living in the world needs friends. Its clear that our society is a competitive one, and the great competition between each other often leads to frequent failures, which sometimes even make you feel despaired. However, if you have a true friend, he will relieve you, cast your sadness aside and encourage you to try again bravely. Therefore, choosing a true friend is quite important to us. But a false friend will stay with you when he thinks he can benefit from you and leave you the moment you need him most. In short, friends are to us what sunshine is to life.高考英语口语考试范文10. Competition and CooperationHow should we understand the relationship between competition and cooperation? For example, there are 11 people in a foot ball team and everyone has its individual skills. They make full use of their own skills to play it, but they cant play it well and even lose the game. Why does it happen? The main reason is that they dont cooperate with the other players and work together to win a game. As a matter of fact, this example tells us many things. Competition gets along with cooperation and they cant be isolated. Cooperation without competition gets along withcooperation and they cant be isolated. Cooperation without competition will never obtain ones goals and satisfy ones needs.。

I. Please read the following passage:I suspect not everyone who loves the country would be happy living the way we do. It takes a couple of special qualities. One is a tolerance for solitude. Because we are so busy and on such a tight budget, we don’t entertain much. During the growing season there is no time for socializing anyway. Jim and Emily are involved in school activities, but they too spend most of their time at home. The other requirement is energy –a lot of it. The way to make self-sufficiency work on a small scale is to resist the temptation to buy a tractor and other expensive laborsaving devices. Instead, you do the work yourself.II. Please read the following passage:How much longer we ’ll have enough energy to stay on here is anybody ’s guess – perhaps for quite a while, perhaps not. When the time comes, we ’ll leave with a feeling of sorrow but also with a sense of pride at what we ’ve been able to accomplish. We should make a fair profit on the sale of the place, too. We ’ve invested about $35,000 of our own money in it, and we could just about double that if we sold today . But this is not a good time to sell. Once economic conditions improve, however, demand for farms like ours should be strong again.II. Between 1820 and 1860, as many as 100,000 slaves traveled the Railroad to freedom. In October 2000, President Clinton authorized $16 million for the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to honor this first great civil-rights struggle in the U. Levi Coffin, a Quaker raised in North Carolina, explained, “The Bible, in bidding us to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, said nothing about color.”In the 1820s Coffin moved west to Newport (now Fountain City), Indiana, where he opened a store. Word spread that fleeing slaves could always find refuge at the Coffin home. Maybe the security guard at the front desk knows your face and will wave you in most days, but the fact remains that the business you work for feels threatened enough to keep outsiders away via these “keys.”It wasn ’t always like this. 英语高级口语 Lesson 3
Lesson 3Should the Brain Drain Be Stopped by Restrictions?TextBrain DrainIt is said that Shanghai's musicians abroad could form a worldclass symphony orchestra. But the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra once failed to find a qualified conductor for a whole year!A similar situation exists in science, medicine and sports circles.Stopping the outflow of talent depends on creating a sound domestic environment rather than simply setting up barriers for those who wish to go abroad.A handful of people go abroad to seek a comfortable life. But most Chinese intellectuals emigrate because they cannot bring their talent into full play in their motherland. Many conductors trairied by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music have gone abroad either because they cannot find jobs in symphony orchestras due to the competition for places, or because they cannot develop themselves in orchestras where promotion comes only by way of seniority. We face a keen shortage of talent, but one batch of gifted people after another have gone abroad". The situation is grim.It is impossible to improve the conditions for all intellectuals by a wide margin. But it is possible for governments. at all levels to create a better environment for their development. The outflow of talent is a loss to our nation as well as a pressuse forcing us to optimize the environment for the taleated.II. ReadRead the following passages. Underline the important viewpoints while reading.l. Give Students More I.eewayTen years ago, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau issued four passports each day. Now the staff must work long hours to process more than 1, 000 a day.People's Daily reports that more than 70,000 Chinese students and scholars are now studying abroad with still more ready to go.While many people are worried about the brain drain problem, the article said that whatever the motives of students who leave, there is no doubt that they cherish a deep feeling towards the motherland. It has been suggested that people who fail to returnon time should be granted "temporary leave from their posts" to encourage them to return at any time.Among those who joined the recent rush abroad, more than half went to further their studies and keep up with the latest academic achievements. According to a survey conducted among some 7, 000 scientific researchers in Shanghai, 82 per cent believed that their experiences abroad were "fruitful". Half said they had made headwayin their work.Meanwhile, they said they continued to follow with great concern the development of their country's economic reforms. Ascholar with a doctorate from 1 Iew York University had written over 100, 000 words of suggestions to the Chinese central government, the article reported.Loneliness was found to be the worst enemy of thestudents living away from their families and homeland. The brain drain from developing to developed countries is an internationalphenomenon. In China, backward management and unreasonable distribution systems, together with poor living and working conditions, have led to the departure of many intellectuals."After my graduation from university, I have spent four years in my office reading a newspaper with a cup of tea every day I want to go abroad to start a new life, " said a 25-year-old technical worker who was waiting for a visa from the Japanese Consulate. Some students and scholars had stayed in foreign countries beyond their time limit for one reason or another. For this thoy had been labelled unpatriotic. But People's Daily called for more trust and understanding of those students.A scholar studying and working at an American university said he would return to China as soon as his daughter finished secondary school in the US.A young scholar at a Shanghai research institute said he could not manage to conduct research with a meagre State allocation of 2, 000 yuan a year. In America, he can get $ 24, 000 a yeat' for use in research, so he decided to stay on after getting his degree. In such cases, most work units back in China dismiss those who fail to return on time. This hurts the feelings of many who are willing to return later, the article said.At the same time, those who do return face a job problem.China,s irrational employment and personnel system prevents some from fully using the skills and knowledge they have acquired abroad.Ai Xiaobai, with a PhD in Physics, wrote to il institutions of higher learning in China. Two of them refused him and the others did not even answer him. Just before deciding to go back to America, he was hired by a Chinese research institute which knew of him.2. Personal Progress and Job-hoppingIn many parts of the world, personal influence is almost essential in getting ahead. One needs a "godfather? a "sponsor". Here that is not true. Naturally all people use influence sometimes, but one rarely advances far on that basis alone in the United States. Here traits which lead to success are generally considered to be the willingness to work hard (at any kind of job), scholarship or skill, initiative, an agreeable and outgoing personality. In other words even in the realm of personal progress, this is a "do-it-yourself" society. By and large, success is neitherinherited nor bestowed. This means, therefore, that our employment practices are different from those in many other countries. In some nations it is considered disloyal to quit a job; deep reciprocal loyalties exist between employee and employer (recipient and "patron?in many cases); lifelong job security and family honor are frequently involved. This is not.true in the United States. "Job-hopping" is part of our constant mobility. We consider it a " right " to be able to better ourselves, to move upward, to jump from company to company if we can keep qualifying for more responsible (and therefore better) jobs. This interchangeability of personnel seems unreasonable to some members of foreign nations. Where are our roots? How can we be so cold and inhuman? "We act,?some say, as if we were dealing with machines, not humans. ?They do not understand that a great many Americans like to move about. New jobs present new challenges, new opportunities, new friends, new experiences-often a new part of the country. The employer may be quite content too. Perhaps he has had the best of that man's thinking; a new person may bring in fresh ideas, improved skills, or new abilities. Then, too, a newcomer will probably start at a lower salary for he will have no seniority. Hopping is so readily accepted here, in fact, that a good man may bounce back and forth among two or three corporations, being welcomed back to his original company more than once through his career, each time at a different level.3. Residents Go Overseas to Seek Their FortunesShanghai has become a favourite investment spot with foreigners eagerto get a financial foothold in China. And with the development of its export-oriented economy, the city looks set to become an international trade and financial centre on the west bank of the Pacific Ocean. But many Shanghai people are not content simply to sit and wait for the foreigners to come to them-they want to go abroad themselves to try their luck. The Shanghainese have a reputation for being able to find work the world over. Before the founding of New China in 1949, hundreds of thousands of them were trading throughout the world. In the 1950s and 1960s when the country was pursuing its closeddoor policy, hundreds of factories, research institutes and universities--involving more than 1 million people-were moved from Shanghai into the inland areas to support the nation's socialist construction. Now,people with Shanghai accents can be found all over the country. The current policy of developing the export-oriented economy in the coastal areas has stimulated the Shanghai people's desire to head off for foreign parts. And, according to the Shanghai-based Jiefang Daily, the best way forthem to do this is to engage in business or provide labour and technical services to other countries.Shanghai has too many people chasing too few jobs, so this surplus labour force could solve the labour shortages which exist in some other parts of the world.Workers' monthly wages abroad can be 100 times what they are in China-although the cost of Iiving is likely to be much higher in some countrtes.Furthermore, while working overseas, the Chinese workers would get the chance to learn advanced technology and to become entrepreneurs and specialists, thus promoting trade and economic co-operation between China and other countries.Jiefang Daily suggests locai authorities should take the following measures to promote exports of labour:Set up labour service groups to undertake contractual projects abroad. Shanghai workers have taken part in many overseas projects in the past, such as construction of railways, factories and other buildings. With their high reputation, they would be a force to be reckoned with on the world labour market.Estahlish employer-employee introduction offices. Drivers, repairmen, nurses, housemaids, hairdressers, cooks and workers involved in gardening and construction are in great demand in many countries and these offices could provide training and act as a bridge between employers and employees.Encourage peopie to look for jobs themselves. As many Shanghai residents have relatives overseas, they could easily get help in finding work abroad.Promote co-operation between the State and individuals. If local people are encouraged to work abroad, workers with special skills would flow out of the country, thus creating a brain drain. To solve the problem, consideration must be given to both State and private interests. When workers go abroad at their own expense, the enterprises they work for should give them favourable treatment when they return. While working overseas, the workers should help their enterprises open up to the world market.Shanghai residents have strong aspirations to expand their living spaceand they are good at trading. But first priority should be given to entrepreneurs who are brave enough to journey out into the world and build success. Before the founding of new China, a number of world-renowned figures such as shipping magnate Pao Yue Kang and the computer king Wang An were raised in Shanghai. It is expected that a group of new magnates will emerge when Shanghai entrepreneurs enter the world economy. Now that Shanghai is capable of building 100, 000-ton-class vessels and manufacturing sophisticated precision building machines, powerful generators, colour televisions and bicycles, there is no reason why the city could not create a group of world-class shipping kings, building machine kings and bicycle kings. With a solid industrial foundation and technical force, Shanghai could also set up factories and shops overseas to compete with foreign counterparts. Shanghai-made brands, very popular at home now, will surely capture a slice of the world market if sales promotion is emphasized.Shanghai produces quality cloth shoes of good workmanship. But its exports are $ 1. 1 billion annually, only half of Taiwan's total, due to the neglect of sales promotion overseas.Shanghai boasts numerous specialists in the fields of science, technology, culture and education. These experts could earn a good deal of foreign exchange for the State if technical services were offered to countries that badly need skilled workers in high-tech industries. The city can also directly export technology and software and contract scientific research projects abroad, as it possesses advantages in the fields of laser, optical fibre, microelectronics and biological engineering technology. 。

Making Small TalkBy Kenneth Beare, GuideMaking Small TalkThe ability to make 'small talk' is highly valued. In fact, many English students are more interested in making effective small talk than knowing correct grammar structures - and rightly so! Small talk gets friendships started and 'breaks the ice' before important business meetings and other events. Why is small talk difficult for some English learners?First of all, making small talk is not difficult only for English learners, but also for many native speakers of English. However, small talk can be especially difficult for some learners because making small talk means talking about almost anything - and that means having a wide vocabulary that can cover most topics. Most English learners have excellent vocabulary in specific areas, but may have difficulties discussing topics they are unfamiliar with because of a lack of appropriate vocabulary. How to Improve Small Talk Skills∙Find common interestsOnce you have a subject that interests both of you, keep to it! You can do this in a number of ways: talking about travel, talking about the school or friend you have in common, talking about the differences between your culture and the new culture (just be careful to make comparisons and not judgments, i.e., The food in our country is better than the food here in England").∙ListenThis is very important. Don't get so worried about being able to communicate that you don't listen. Listening carefully will help you understand and encourage those speaking to you. You might be nervous, but letting others state their opinions will improve the quality of the discussion - and give you time to think of an answer!∙Stay away from religion/strong political beliefsWhile you may believe in something very strongly, beginning conversations and making small talk about your own personal convictions may abruptly end the conversation. Keep it light, don't try to convince the other person that you have the 'correct' information about a higher being, political system or other belief system. Here is a list of common small talk subjects. If you have difficulties speaking about any of these topics, try to improve your vocabulary by using the resources available to you (Internet, magazines, teachers at school, etc.)∙Sports - current matches or games, favorite teams, etc.∙Hobbies∙Weather - boring, but can get the ball rolling!∙Family - general questions, not questions about private matters∙Media - films, books, magazines, etc.∙Holidays - where, when, etc. but NOT how much!∙Home town - where do you come from, how is it different/similar to this town∙Job - once again, general questions not too specific∙Latest fashion and trends∙Celebrities - any gossip you may have! Here is a list of topics that probably aren't very good for small talk. Of course, if you are meeting a close friend these topics may be excellent.Just remember that 'small talk' is generally discussion with people you don't know very well.∙Salary - how much do you make? - That's none of your business!∙Politics - wait to you get to know the person better∙Intimate relationships - only for you and your partner - or maybe your best friend∙Religion - tolerance is the key!∙Death - we need to face it, but not the first time we meet someone new∙Financial - related to salary above, most people prefer to keep financial information to themselves∙Sales - Don't try to sell something to someone you have just met.How to Make Small TalkHow to Talk to PeopleBy Cherie Burbach, GuidePart of developing a new friendship is making small talk, or initiating a conversation using basic topics that are safe to talk about with someone you don't know yet. Making small talk might sound tedious to some people, but it is an important tool in learning about others.Conversation that starts out small leads to other topics where potential friends find out things they may have in common.Making small talk is definitely an art, but the upside is that the more you do it, the better you'll be at it. Finding the right topics to bring up is just as important as the ease in which you converse.Tips for Making Small Talk Work for You∙Keep up on current topics, such as news items, TV shows, or recent movies.∙It may take several conversations before you bond with someone. Don't expect to become fast friends just because you've connected over small talk.∙Avoid controversial subjects.∙Be yourself. Don't crack jokes or act like an expert on a certain subject just to impress someone.∙Don't worry about your "performance." If you talk with a few people and they don't seem interested, just keep moving on to someone else. One Good Strategy: Things Going on Around YouCommenting on the events right before your eyes is an easy way to make small talk, but be sure to look for clues in the responses you get that will move the conversation forward.Ask questions as you observe the people and activities going on and you'll have a better time finding common ground. For example, "Isn't this a great event? We come here every year, since our kids were little. What about you? What brings you here?" This question gives some facts about you that the listener can pick up on and also invites them to share more about themselves.Small talk subjects often include the weather or what you do for a living, but another strategy is to talk about something around you. You might try a simple introduction by way of ice breaker ("Hi. I'm Julie."), coupled with a question about the event, such as:∙"This is a great party. How do you know Kathy, our host?"∙"Gail is a beautiful bride, isn't she? How do you know the couple?"∙"What a fabulous day for a picnic! How long have your worked for XYZ Company?"Approach Someone at a social eventWhen going to a party or event, look for others who are on their own or standing by themselves. It will be easier to approach someone else (who may be in the same shoes you are) rather than trying to work your way into a group.Small Talk With StrangersIce Breakers for Chatting With New PeopleBy Cherie Burbach, GuideSmall talk changes slightly when you're with strangers as opposed to people at a business function or party. Strangers, in this case, refers to people you don't know who you see out and about somewhere in the course of your daily routine. Since you don't know a thing about them, choose general subjects that allow anyone to comment on.What's the benefit to chatting with strangers? It gives you practice for those times in life (like first dates or important business functions) where you'll need to make a really great impression. If you're used to talking with people on a routine basis, you won't be tripped up when you're nervous. Also, as Will Rogers once said, "A stranger is just a friend I haven't met yet." You never know how friendships will develop, so it's a good idea to be prepared to make the most of any opportunity. Here are some ice breakers that work well with strangers.Comment on Something in the NewsAvoid topics like politics, sex, or religion, as those topics are more suited for conversation between friends. Instead, bring up a popular subject that has been getting a lot of play in the news. It's a good idea to read the paper or go online to check out the latest newsworthy topics before you leave the house so you're prepared with something to say.Compliment an Accessory ItemAnother tactic to open up small talk is to compliment the accessories someone is wearing: jewelry, glasses, purse, shoes, watch, tie, clothing, pins, etc. Avoid making a comment about someones clothing as it can come off as if you're acting weird or hitting on him or her. Making a genuine comment about an accessory is much more acceptable.Ask About Their PhoneEveryone seems to have a cell phone, computer, or other gadget on hand these days, so ask someone if they are using an iPhone or Bluetooth headset and how they like it. They're likely to tell you if they would buy the same thing again or give you the name of another version they can recommend instead. People enjoy talking about their gadgets, so it won't be difficult to get them to open up.Small Talk Standby: The WeatherThe weather is often mentioned as something you should avoid when making small talk, but I think it is still a good opener with strangers, if you use some detail. Rather than say, "Nice weather we're having,"• say instead, "What a warm day it turned out to be! What are you doing this afternoon? Are you able to get out and enjoy it?"Or, ask them about something regarding the weather, like: "I wasn't able to find out if it was going to rain. We've got a picnic coming up so I sure hope not. Did you happen to catch the forecast?"•Restaurant or Shopping RecommendationsAsk someone if they can suggest a good restaurant for lunch or dinner. Say something like, "I'm taking my friend to lunch for her birthday tomorrow. Do you know a good place?"• Or, "We need to find a fun but reasonably priced place to take my mom out for her birthday. Do you have a suggestion?"•Asking where to eat will generally prompt someone to give you the scoop on their favorite places, which usually comes attached with more personal information, such as the parties they planned there, the fact that they go there every year for a special event, or why they like the atmosphere. They might recommend a restaurant and then add, "We go there all the time!"• or "We just took my aunt there last week and she loved it."• You can ask them more questions based on what they say, and this will help you continue the conversation.。
