Use specific reasons and details in your response. I definitely agree with the statement for the following reasons. First, a lot of young children suffer from diseases caused by eating too much candy and junk food. Statistics have shown that more and more young children have been diagnosed with obesity each year because they have taken too much unhealthy food. Food like candy and junk food can also cause other problems which are all harmful to kids’ health and growth. Second, advertisements for candy and junk food on TV have a really negative influence on young children’s choice of food. Kids are easily affected by what they see on TV. For examples, my 8-year-old nephew kept asking his parents to buy this new brand candy because he saw it the other day on TV. The advertisement itself is filled with cute cartoon characters chewing the candy happily, which looked so attractive to my nephew. Therefore, I believe, if more advertisements for healthy food are shown on TV, the kids will be affected to have a more healthy food choice.

Because, first of all, I think undergraduate study is meant for broadness. Students had better broaden their horizon and prevent themselves from being narrow-minded. Second of all, I think before students find their “true love”, I mean, the subject they really want to go deep into, they should probably extend their study field and taste different subjects in various areas so as to identify the “true love”. Take myself as an example, my major is software engineering in the college, but I took various courses outside my major field. Then I found out that I was more interested in literature than in computer and software. So literature is my “true love”.

Most of this growth will take place in China. In comparison, the United States has been completely transformed by cars. Cars did not become necessities for families in the United States until after World War II. Prior to that time, cars were seen mainly as toys for the rich. By the end of the war, however, people were tired of saving their money. They were ready to have some fun. Unlike Europe and Japan, whose industries had been wiped out by World War II, factories in the United States could quickly be changed from production of wartime items to mass production of such luxury items as cars.As cars grew in popularity in the United States, there were also changes in lifestyle. Farmers who were once isolated from society by rural life now took weekend trips into the city. Also, workers in the cities no longer needed to live in inner-city housing in orderto keep their jobs at nearby factories. Those who made enough money moved out of the cities and into the suburbs. Now that each family had its own car, going to work from the suburbs became a common practice.Cars not only changed the way people lived, but also changed the way they thought. Traditionally, because young people spent most of their time outside school in and around the home, the strongest role models for teenagers were their parents. However, once they had access to their own cars, teens began spending more time out with friends. Therefore, they became less likely to follow the behavior of their parents and more likely to follow their friends’.One thing producers paid little attention to, however, was safety. It wasn’t until the mid-1960s that consumers began to demand that all car companies include at least a few common safety features in new cars. These new standards eventually led to safety features such as seat belts, air bags, anti-lock brakes, and automatic door locks.1. Why cars didn’t sell as well in Europe as in the United States? Europeans were living in poverty after World War II.Passage TwoDiamonds! Even the word seems to shine. Diamonds have been fascinating people for centuries. Ancient people believed the stones had magical powers. Kings and queens have worn them to display power and wealth. Brides-to-be have received them as tokens of love for at least 500 years. Luck, power, wealth, love—people have sought these and more in diamonds. The first diamonds were discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. Because of their hardness, diamonds could not be polished as easily as other gems (宝石). Ancient Indian rulers wore the unpolished stones. Some Indians carried knives with edges and tips of diamond. Indians also use tools made with diamonds to cut hard materials.Centuries later, people discovered that diamonds—and only diamonds—can cut other diamonds. They began shaping and polishing the gems by rubbing one diamond against another. The flat surfaces that resulted made the diamonds more shining than other stones. Hand polishing was slow, difficult work which could cause injury rubbing the hard stones against one another. Later, a flat, revolving disk coated with diamond dust was used. It was turned by hand. Today a polisher uses a similar piece of equipment turned by a machine.A boy in what is now South Africa made one of the most important diamond discoveries of all time. One day in 1867, Erasmus Jacobs, 15, was resting beside a river when he saw a shining stone. He took the stone home, and his mother later gave it away. The stone turned out to be a diamond nearly as large as a golf ball. It was the first recorded discovery of a diamond in Africa. That find started a diamond rush, which continues to the present. Today South Africa is a major diamond supplier. Africa and Russia now are the sources of most of the world’s diamonds. When most of us think of diamonds, we think of the expensive gems in rings and necklaces. Diamonds are valuable because they are rare and beautiful. To obtain an ounce of diamonds, miners must move many tons of rock. Then the diamonds are sorted by size, shape, color and clarity. Only one out of five rough diamonds is cut into a gem.1. People first cut diamonds ________. [单选题] *A. 2,000 years ago.B. centuries after diamonds were first discovered.(正确答案)C. in the 1800s.D. about 500 years ago.2. When Erasmus Jacobs found the sparkling stone by the river, ________. [单选题] *A. he knew it was a diamond because it was shining.B. he sold it thinking it’s precious.C. he took it home to give it to his mother.(正确答案)D. he left it by the river but came back later to get it.3. What is indirectly said about a person who cuts diamonds? [单选题] *A. He can expect to hurt his hands when rubbing and polishing the stones.(正确答案)B. He can ruin a good stone due to the lack of the tool to cut it.C. He should work in the diamond mines so that he can choose the best stones.D. He must be able to create beautiful jewelry.4. What can be inferred from this passage? [单选题] *A. Most diamonds are found by rivers.B. Most diamonds are found in ocean caves.C. Most diamonds are dug out of deep mines.(正确答案)D. Most diamonds are made into jewelry.5. What is the main idea of the passage? [单选题] *A. Diamonds shine because of the way they are cut.B. Why diamonds are so valuable and rare.C. Most diamonds are found in Africa and Asia.D. The precious diamonds have a long history.(正确答案)四、翻译题(共20分)Yuelu AcademyAs one of the four most prestigious academies over the last 1,000 years in China, Yuelu Academy has been a famous institution of higher learning as well as a center of academic activities and cultures. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

A glimpse into the future of a child and a society is available in daily life. Some children are encouraged to make their own decisions about daily matters affecting them, but others are concerned that this may make a society where people only think about their own wishes.Allowing children to make their own choices in daily matters may be based on the brief that overly protective parents tend tohave overly dependent offspring. This isn t good for the children's growth or for the parents. We often hear about dangers for children who always turn to their parents if there's a problem or decision, and who expect their parents to meet all their needs. However, we do not hear as much about how parents* lives can be restricted by these needs. Adult children who cling to unrealistic expectations of what their parents should do for them might make their own lives and their parent's lives difficult. However, there are also some pessimists about freedom of children. They may think if young children are always given the freedom to make their own choices, such as selecting a favourite clothes or a particular flavor of ice cream, they may gradually become a person who only cares about their own feelings or desires. This means when they grow up there would be many self-centred adults who only care about themselvesand do everything only for their own interests. They would do this because they are taught this when they are young. This is not good for the development of our society and dearly, this is not a society we want to become. From my perspective, children should be given some freedom to make their own decisions about daily matters because this is important for their independence and also good for their parents. But it does not mean that parents should never intervene. They should give some suggestions to their children and help them take into account the possible consequences of their actions.
