Morel was then twenty-seven years old. He was well set-up, erect, and very smart. He had wavy black hair that shone again, and a vigorous black beard that had never been shaved. His cheeks were ruddy, and his red, moist mouth was noticeable because he laughed so often and so heartily. He had that rare thing, a rich, ringing laugh. Gertrude Coppard had watched him, fascinated. He was so full of colour and animation, his voice ran so easily into comic grotesque, he was so ready and so pleasant with everybody. Her own father had a rich fund of humour, but it was satiric. This man's was different: soft, non-intellectual, warm, a kind of gambolling. She herself was opposite. She had a curious, receptive mind which found much pleasure and amusement in listening to other folk. She was clever in leading folk to talk. She loved ideas, and was considered very intellectual. What she liked most of all was an argument on religion or philosophy or politics with some educated man. This she did not often enjoy. So she always had people tell her about themselves, finding her pleasure so.In her person she was rather small and delicate, with a large brow, and dropping bunches of brown silk curls. Her blue eyes were very straight, honest, and searching. She had the beautiful hands of the Coppards. Her dress was always subdued. She wore dark blue silk, with a peculiar silver chain of silver scallops. This, and a heavy brooch of twisted gold, was her only ornament. She was still perfectly intact, deeply religious, and full of beautiful candour.Walter Morel seemed melted away before her. She was to the miner that thing of mystery and fascination, a lady. When she spoke to him, it was with a southern pronunciation and a purity of English which thrilled him to hear. She watched him. He danced well, as if it were natural and joyous in him to dance. His grandfather was a French refugee who had married an English barmaid--if it had been a marriage. Gertrude Coppard watched the young miner as he danced, a certain subtle exultation like glamour in his movement, and his face the flower of his body, ruddy, with tumbled black hair, and laughing alike whatever partner he bowed above. She thought him rather wonderful, never having met anyone like him. Her father was to her the type of all men. And George Coppard, proud in his bearing, handsome, and rather bitter; who preferred theology in reading, and who drew near in sympathy only to one man, the Apostle Paul; who was harsh in government, and in familiarity ironic; who ignored all sensuous pleasure:--he was very different from the miner. Gertrude herself was rather contemptuous of dancing; she had not theslightest inclination towards that accomplishment, and had never learned even aRoger de Coverley. She was puritan, like her father, high-minded, and really stern. Therefore the dusky, golden softness of this man's sensuous flame of life, that flowed off his flesh like the flame from a candle, not baffled and gripped into incandescence by thought and spirit as her life was, seemed to her something wonderful, beyond her. Walter Morel seemed melted away before her. Lawrence's father, a hot-tempered alcoholic, often bullied his wife and children. His mother, however, was an educated and sensitive woman who was extremely disappointed with her husband. To avert her attention, she began to devote all her life to her children, hoping that they would in future earn their position in upper class. Lawrence suffered a lot from this overpowering love, which was considered by some critics to be a typical illustration of Sigmund Freud's theory of Oedipus Complex.
Question: Why did Lawrence change the title from Paul Morel to Sons and Lovers?
Plot Review
Who are the main characters in the story? What are the characteristics of each character? What may cause Paul's inability to establish a healthy and harmonious relationship with his lovers?

The Wordsworth Classics covers a huge list of beloved works of literature in English and tr anslations. This growing series is rigorously updated, with scholarly introductions and notes added to new titles. This semi-autobiographical novel explores the emotional conflicts through the protagonist, Pa ul Morel, and the suffocating relationships with a demanding mother and two very different lovers. It is a Freudian exploration of love and possessiveness.Sons and Lovers was the first modern portrayal of a phenomenon that later, thanks to Freu d, became easily recognizable as the Oedipus complex. Never was a son more indentured to his mother's love and full of hatred for his father than Paul Morel, D.H. Lawrence's young protagoni st. Never, that is, except perhaps Lawrence himself. In his 1913 novel he grappled with the disc ordant loves that haunted him all his life--for his spiritual childhood sweetheart, here called Miria m, and for his mother, whom he transformed into Mrs. Morel. It is, by Lawrence's own account, a book aimed at depicting this woman's grasp: "as her sons grow up she selects them as lovers --first the eldest, then the second. These sons are urged into life by their reciprocal love of their mother--urged on and on. But when they come to manhood, they can't love, because their moth er is the strongest power in their lives."Of course, Mrs. Morel takes neither of her two elder sons (the first of whom dies early, wh ich further intensifies her grip on Paul) as a literal lover, but nonetheless her psychological snare is immense. She loathes Paul's Miriam from the start, understanding that the girl's deep love of her son will oust her: "She's not like an ordinary woman, who can leave me my share in him. She wants to absorb him." Meanwhile, Paul plays his part with equal fervor, incapable of committ ing himself in either direction: "Why did his mother sit at home and suffer?... And why did he ha te Miriam, and feel so cruel towards her, at the thought of his mother. If Miriam caused his mot her suffering, then he hated her--and he easily hated her." Soon thereafter he even confesses to his mother: "I really don't love her. I talk to her, but I want to come home to you."The result of all this is that Paul throws Miriam over for a married suffragette, Clara Dawes, who fulfills the sexual component of his ascent to manhood but leaves him, as ever, without a complete relationship to challenge his love for his mother. As Paul voyages from the working-clas s mining world to the spheres of commerce and art (he has fair success as a painter), he accep ts that his own achievements must be equally his mother's. "There was so much to come out ofhim. Life for her was rich with promise. She was to see herself fulfilled... All his work was hers. "The cycles of Paul's relationships with these three women are terrifying at times, and Lawr ence does nothing to dim their intensity. Nor does he shirk in his vivid, sensuous descriptions of the landscape that offers up its blossoms and beasts and "shimmeriness" to Paul's sensitive spir it. Sons and Lovers lays fully bare the souls of men and earth. Few books tell such whole, com plicated truths about the permutations of love as resolutely without resolution. It's nothing short of searing to be brushed by humanity in this manner.--Melanie ReFrom Kirkus ReviewsWhen Sons and Lovers was first seen by its reading public in 1913, its publishers had in f act, out of caution and timidity, shortened Lawrence's originally submitted version by about ten p ercent--cuts that are restored in this new "uncensored and uncut" edition. Complexity of character ization, intensity of characters' confrontations, and sexual frankness are now, say the publishers, as the author intended them. Example: "He could smell her faint perfume" returns to its original, "He could smell her faint natural perfume, and it drove him wild with hunger."The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of LiteratureSemiautobiographical novel by D.H. Lawrence, published in 1913. His first mature novel, it i s a psychological study of the familial and love relationships of a working-class English family. T he novel revolves around Paul Morel, a sensitive young artist whose love for his mother, Gertrud e, overshadows his romances with two women: Miriam Leivers, his repressed, religious girlfriend, and Clara Dawes, an experienced, independent married woman. Unable to watch his mother die slowly of cancer, Paul kills her with morphine. Despite losing her and rejecting both Miriam and Clara, Paul harbors hope for the future. From AudioFileLawrence's first major novel is unstintingly, passionately autobiographical. Set in a Nottingha mshire mining town, it concerns the high-minded wife of a brutal miner who puts all hopes into h er artistic son, Paul. Copley brings the workingclass milieu to life. His north country accent enhan ces the author's regional "sound," which may not be apparent on the page to American readers, but which is a prominent feature of the book's aesthetic. By shaving off a bit too much of the co lor, the abridgment reinforces the novel's starkness. Therefore, one should hear this recording bef ore, not instead of, reading the full work. ➢ Paul is afraid to leave his mother but wants to go out on his own, and needs to experience love. Gradually, he falls into a relationship with Miriam, a farm girl who attends his church. The two take long walks and have intellectual conversations about books but finally Paul resists, partially because his mother looks down on her.
3
Paul Morel: Paul is the protagonist of the novel. He is sensitive, temperamental, artistic, and unceasingly devoted to his mother. They are inseparable; he confides everything in her, works and paints to please her, and nurses her as she dies. Paul has ultimately unsuccessful romances with Miriam and Clara, always alternating between great love and hatred for each of them.
4

Miriam Leiver: Miriam is a virginal, religious girl who lives on a farm near the Morels, and she is Paul's first love. However, their relationship takes ages to move beyond the Platonic and into the romantic. She loves Paul deeply, but he never wants to marry her and "belong" to her, in his words. Rather, he sees her more as a sacrificial, spiritual soul mate and less as a sensual, romantic lover. Mrs. Morel, who feels threatened by Miriam's intellectuality, always reinforces his disdain for Miriam.

Sons and Lovers is a novel written by David Herbert Lawrence and it was first published in 1913 in London by Wyman & Sons.D. H. Lawrence was born at Eastwood, Notts, on September 11, 1885, the fourth child of a miner who had been employed at Brinsley Colliery since he was 7 years old. In 1911, his first novel The White Peacock was published.Sons and Lovers is divided into two parts and is composed of 15 chapters altogether. The story, set in England, can be interpreted as an autobiographical novel of Lawrence. The hero of the book, Paul Morel, is the second son of a miner's family. His mother, Mrs. Morel, is a daughter of a mid-class family. Because of the differences in family background and education, a shadow is soon cast upon the married life of Mrs. Morel. And this shadow is darkened by Mr. Morel's laziness and alcoholism. By misfortune or bad luck, Mr. Morel has an accident and becomes a cripple, which changes him into a man of bad temper. As a result, the couple shares less and less the things in common and is driven farther and farther apart from each other. Little by little, Mrs. Morel transports her attention and love to her children, especially her two sons, William and Paul. She encourages them to leave the small mining region for a big city to find opportunities for a better life. After the death of her first son, William, because of hard work and pneumonia(肺炎), Mrs. Morel's divided attention and love is poured completely upon Paul. The mother's abnormal love robs Paul of his normal love for his girl friend.Sons and Lovers has always been claimed since its publication to be another version of Oedipus complex*. But D. H. Lawrence is in no sense an imitator. Sons and Lovers is trulyan autobiographical novel. It describes an ordinary life of a coal miner's family. The abnormal love from the mother deprives Paul of his independent personality and mental health. It is perhaps because of this true picture of life that the novel has won Lawrence everlasting reputation.Oedipus complex: (psych) love of an infant for the parent of the opposite sex, with jealousyof the other parent. The term originated from a Greek myth in which King Oedipus killed his father and married his mother.(心理学上)(儿子对母亲的)恋母情结(及对父亲的嫉妒);(女儿对父亲的)恋父情结(及对母亲的嫉妒)。

文中写到,“I hope so; but love should give a sense of freedom, not of prison.”

Sons and loversA major theme in "Sons and Lovers" is bondage and escape. Every major character is held hostage by another character or by their environment. Her husband, her family and her anger at the family's social status hold Mrs. Morel hostage. She has no friends to be seen or money of her own to use. Her escape from her bondage is her death. She was unhappy her whole life and lived though another human as a source of happiness. She essentially lived her life through William and, after his death, through Paul, which in a twist of irony; by doing so she is essentially keeping them in bondage. She wants William to move to town to get a good job and a good wife to help up their social status. When he does move and bring home a woman, she thinks she has finally arrived, only to be pushed back down with his death. William, who found a good upper class woman with Lily, brings her back to his family's home. He loves Lily, until he sees her behavior to his sister; Lily treats Annie like a servant. Although his mother likes Lily, he cannot stay with her and soon leaves her and then falls ill and dies. William's death is his great escape from the bonds of his mother. When William dies Paul replaces him as Mrs. Morel's dummy; Paul leads his life as his mother wants him to, she keeps him in check, approves who he dates and even goes with him and speaks for him on his first job interview. The only thing redeeming Paul in this is that he knows that he is being tied down by his mother and is fighting a silent fight against her for his whole life. Although Mrs. Morel doesn't like Miriam, he keeps his relationship with her. Although Mrs. Morel doesn't want Paul to stay out late, on most occasions he breaks this rule also. The only thing that ever releases Paul from Mrs. Morel's grasp is her death.。

Sons and Lovers" by D.H. Lawrence is a complex and emotionally charged novel that explores the relationship between a mother and her sons. Lawrence's vivid prose and insightful characterization bring to life the struggles and passions of the Morel family in early 20th-century England. The novel revolves around Paul Morel, a young man torn between his love for his mother, Gertrude, and his desire for independence. Gertrude is a possessive and manipulative woman who smothers Paul with her affection, hindering his emotional and sexual development. As Paul grows older, he becomes increasingly frustrated by his mother's suffocating embrace and seeks refuge in relationships with other women.Lawrence does an exceptional job of portraying the complexities of Paul's character. Paul is sensitive, intelligent, and ambitious, but he is also weak-willed andindecisive. His inability to reconcile his love for his mother with his desire for freedom leads him into a cycle of self-destruction.In addition to its exploration of familial relationships, "Sons and Lovers" also delves into themes of social class and economic hardship. The Morel family is working-class, and they struggle to make ends meet. This economic pressure further exacerbates the tensions within the family, as Paul feels trapped by his circumstances and yearns for a better life.Lawrence's writing is rich in symbolism and imagery, which adds depth and resonance to the novel. The setting of the Midlands, with its industrial landscapes and bleak mining towns, reflects the emotional struggles of the characters. The recurring motif of birds and animals symbolizes Paul's longing for freedom and his entrapment within his family.Overall, "Sons and Lovers" is a powerful and moving novel that offers a profound exploration of humanrelationships, desire, and the struggle for independence. Lawrence's masterful storytelling and psychological insight make this a classic work of English literature that continues to resonate with readers today.

Sons and Lovers

Possessive Love—Sons and LoversSons and Lovers, first published in 1913, is a classic written by D.H. Lawrence. Although Sons and Lovers deals with the possessive love with candor and gave rise to a fierce controversy then, it is still one of the greatest autobiographical novels of the 20th centuryThe story occurs in Britain back to the 19th century, when the UK was undergoing the Industrial Revolution. The author presents us a vivid picture of the life of a typical working-class family living in a community of a mining company. With roaring engines and the smoky sky, the story begins.Gertrude Coppard, an elegant middle-class woman, marries Walter Morel, a vulgar working-class miner on an impulse. As the love dies down gradually and chores haunt her frequently, Mrs. Morel’s mental attachment to her husband eventually yields to possessive love on her sons—William and Paul. By and by, the love is growing so overwhelming that the sons have no chance to escape from this entanglement nor, even, can Mrs. Morel get rid of the obsession with her sons. When the two sons are, however, confronted with the chance to pursue their own love, they tend to be fragile, sensitive and awkward. William lavishes on his relationship with Miss Western, a light-hearted young girl, only to find love is no more than money to her and he is totally forgotten by the girl soon after his death; Paul seesaws between Miriam and Clara, finding no way to love pure Miriam completely for her belief in platonic love nor married Clara for their adultery and Mrs. Morel, in addition, makes every effort to prevent her power over Paul from being grabbed by the lovers. As Mrs. Morel passes away, the shackle upon Paul is removed. Insecure and exhausted, hewanders alone, finally. In the eyes of D.H. Lawrence, love is no longer merely a soothing rub; when it grows too possessive, it turns to a heavy punch knocking down everyone. It is the lack of husband’s love actually that gives rise to the possessive love. At first, Mrs. Morel has good management of her love, e.g., on the one hand, she is receiving love from her husband and children; on the other hand she loves them unconditionally in return. Then, however, as the gap between her and Mr. Morel becomes increasingly unbridgeable, this equilibrium is broken that husband’s love is no longer available. As a result, Mrs. Morel decides to do investment of love in order to compensate for the loss of husband’s love. She withdraws her love from her husband who turns out to be an “unfavorable share”and invests it in her two sons. Under the disguise of maternal love, her excessive devotion to the sons is taken as no more than the responsibility of a mother and soon begins to make profits on William: he turns against his father, burns the love letters from young ladies and wins an anvil—all the things the decent young man does only for her. Though she is quite clear that she can never marry William, she regards him as her real husband whose caring deeds are taken as gestures of affection and brings her satisfaction as husband’s love ever did.She should have been content with what she has already gained from this practice of investment, but, unfortunately, she becomes too obsessed to stop and after the death of William she descends to an incurable love speculator finally. Her possessive love reaches its peak. After the death of William, Mrs. Morel has no choice but to put all her devotion to Paul for fear that all her previous efforts should be in vain. And Paul, the poor boy, is totally trapped but cannot figure out why it is so. The confusion is elaborated by Lawrence frequently.” He knew she suffered badly, but why should she? And why did he hate Miriam, and feel so cruel towards her, at the thought of his mother. If Miriam caused his mother suffering, then he hated her—and he easily hated her. Why did he make him…”As a lonely woman, Mrs. Morel wins sound profits from her love investment and then speculation, for her needs of husband’s love are amply met. As a mother, however, she is selfish and her possessive love finally ruins William and Paul despite her great devotion to them.。

Sons_and_Lovers 英文简介

Sons and Lovers--Plot introductionThe third published novel of D.H. Lawrence, taken by many to be his earliest masterpiece tells the story of Paul Morel, a young man and a budding artist. This autobiographical novel is a brilliant evocation of life in a working class mining community. The original 1913 edition was heavily edited by Edward Garnett who removed eighty passages, roughly a tenth of the text. Despite this the novel is dedicated to Garnett. It was not until the 1992 Cambridge University Press edition that the missing text was restored.Explanation of the novel's titleLawrence rewrote the work four times until he was happy with it. Although before publication the work was usually called Paul Morel, Lawrence finally settled on Sons and Lovers. Just as this changed title makes the work less focused on a central character, many of the latter additions broadened the scope of the work thereby making the work less autobiographical. While some of the edits by Garnett were on the grounds of propriety or style, others would once more narrow the emphasis back upon Paul.Plot summaryPart I:The refined daughter of a "good old burgher family," Gertrude Coppard meets a rough-hewn miner at a Christmas dance and falls into a whirlwind romance. But soon after her marriage to Walter Morel, she realizes the difficulties of living off his meager salary in a rented house. The couple fight and drift apart and Walter retreats to the pub after work each day. Gradually, Mrs. Morel's affections shift to her sons, beginning with the oldest, William. As a boy, William is so attached to his mother that he doesn't enjoy the fair without her. As he grows older, he defends her against his father's occasional violence. Eventually, he leaves home for a job in London, where he begins to rise up into the middle class. He is engaged, but he detests the girl's superficiality. He dies, and Mrs. Morel is heartbroken, but when Paul catches pneumonia, she rediscovers her love for her second son.Part II:Both repulsed by and drawn to his mother, Paul is afraid to leave her but wants to go out on his own, and needs to experience love. Gradually, he falls into a relationship with Miriam, a farm girl who attends his church. The two take long walks and have intellectual conversations about books, but Paul resists, in part because his mother looks down on her. At work, Paul meets Clara Dawes, who has separated from her husband, Baxter.Paul leaves Miriam behind as he grows more intimate with Clara, but even she cannot hold him,and he returns to his mother. When his mother dies soon after, he is alone.Lawrence summarised the plot in a letter to Edward Garnett on 12 November 1912:It follows this idea: a woman of character and refinement goes into the lower class, and has no satisfaction in her own life. She has had a passion for her husband, so her children are born of passion, and have heaps of vitality. But as her sons grow up she selects them as lovers — first the eldest, then the second. These sons are urged into life by their reciprocal love of their mother —urged on and on. But when they come to manhood, they can't love, because their mother is the strongest power in their lives, and holds them. It's rather like Goethe and his mother and Frau von Stein and Christiana — As soon as the young men come into contact with women, there's a split. William gives his sex to a fribble, and his mother holds his soul. But the split kills him, because he doesn't know where he is. The next son gets a woman who fights for his soul — fights his mother. The son loves his mother —all the sons hate and are jealous of the father. The battle goes on between the mother and the girl, with the son as object. The mother gradually proves stronger, because of the ties of blood. The son decides to leave his soul in his mother's hands, and, like his elder brother go for passion. He gets passion. Then the split begins to tell again. But, almost unconsciously, the mother realises what is the matter, and begins to die. The son casts off his mistress, attends to his mother dying. He is left in the end naked of everything, with the drift towards death. This is the most autobiographical of all Lawrence's works as the author himself had a similar relationship with his own mother. The use of this oedipal theme is one of a number of Freudian concepts he used throughout his books. Like many of his works, Sons and Lovers was criticized when first published for obscenity and one publisher called it "the dirtiest book he had ever read" but compared to his later works it is quite constrained.。

Question
• Mrs. Morel does not want to disturb the children or the neighbours when re-entering the house. Why does she still need her drunken husband’s help?
• The main character, Paul Morel, is clearly based on Lawrence himself. • Like Lawrence, Paul has an older brother who dies young and his parents are trapped in a loveless marriage. • Paul both loves and is repulsed by his possessive mother. It seems he needs to experience true adult love in order that she can break free from her. • At first he dates Miriam, a girl from his church, but is then drawn to Clara, a woman who is separated from her husband Baxter Dawes.
Freud’s ideas took London by storm.
Ernest Jones founded the London Psychoanalytical Society in 1913.
This was around the time Lawrence was working in Croydon – just south of London - as a teacher.
D.H. Lawrence and the working classes
• Some would argue that D.H. Lawrence was not really a “working class” writer. • His books include a lot of local Nottinghamshire dialect and poor people. However, he does not often argue their case in a political way. • He seems more interested in experimenting with what it is possible to write about and how. • Novels like The Rainbow and Women in Love contain plenty of middle class characters.
BreaktiBiblioteka eLawrence and Modernism
Last class I began to describe what was new or “modern” about Lawrence’s prose. His style of writing is focused very much upon the emotions and is often sensual.
The unconscious
The unconscious contains a lot of the thoughts and desires that cannot be expressed in normal every day life. The mind suppresses (tries to hide) them, but they are never destroyed and sometimes they break to the surface. For instance, you might secretly fancy one of your classmates. You deny this feeling because you know she has a boyfriend. However, at night when your mind is relaxed you keep on having dreams about her.
Question
• Do you think Mrs. Morel could escape from this situation if she wanted to? What is keeping her married to Mr. Morel?
… the miners worked underground as a sort of intimate community, they knew each other practically naked, and with a curious intimacy, and the darkness and the underground remoteness of the pit “stall”, and the continual presence of danger, made the physical, instinctive and intuitional contact between men very highly developed, a contact as close as touch, very real and very powerful, the physical awareness and intimate togetherness was at its strongest down pit. When the men came up into the light, they blinked. They had, in a measure to change their flow …. The colliers were deeply alive, instinctively. But they had no daytime ambition, and no daytime intellect. They avoided, really, the rational aspect of life. They preferred to take life instinctively and intuitively (‘Nottingham and the Mining Countryside’).
Presentation
Over to you!!!! ....
Sons and Lovers (1913)
Lawrence’s early life was marked by the tension between his parents. His mother, Lydia, wanted her son to escape working class life. His father, Arthur, was proud of being a manual worker and could barely read and write himself.
Question
• Looking at pages 189-191 especially, what kind of a husband is Mr. Morel to his wife?
Question
• How does the open space of the garden contrast with what she feels inside the home?
Lawrence and modern ideas
Lawrence was also “modern” in terms of the ideas he expressed in his works. He was a keen reader and liked to keep up with current thought about science and philosophy. Some people think he is not so much a novelist as a philosopher who wrote novels.
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939)
A major influence upon Lawrence, especially when he was writing Sons and Lovers, was the Austrian doctor Sigmund Freud. Freud is of course regarded as the father of “psychoanalysis”. Lawrence would later write two studies of his own based on Freud’s writings – “Fantasia of the Unconscious” and “Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious”. Freud’s work was first introduced to England in the 1900s. It was originally written in German.
Years later, when asked about David’s success as a writer, Mr. Lawrence said “the boy’s never done a day’s honest work in his life”.
Sons and Lovers, D.H. Lawrence’s first major novel, is usually thought of as being very autobiographical, drawing upon his own early struggles.
