斯托夫人个人介绍
In 1836 Stowe married Calvin E. Stowe, a professor at her father's theological seminary. The early years of their marriage were marked by poverty. Over the next 14 years Stowe had 7 children. In 1850 Calvin Stowe was offered a professorship at Bowdoin, and they moved to Brunswick, Maine. In Cincinnati Stowe had come in contact with fugitive slaves. She learned about life in the South from her own visits there and saw how cruel slavery was. These experiences led Stowe to compose her famous novel, which was first published in the anti-slavery newspaper The National Era and later in book feracity of her portrayal of the South led Stowe to publish The Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin (1853), in which she presented her source material. A second anti-slavery novel, Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp (1856), told the story of a dramatic attempt at slave rebellion. Stowe's later works did not gain the same popularity as Uncle Tom's Cabin . She published novels, studies of social life, essays, and a small volume of religious poems. Pearl of Orr's Island (1862), Old-Town Folks (1869) and her last novel Poganuc People (1878) were partly based on her husband's childhood reminiscences and are among the first examples of local color writing in New England.

The suffering of Uncle Tom and the struggle of the Harries for freedom described in this book made a deep impression on the reading pubic and greatly appealed their sympathy. What‘s more, it arouses antislavery sentiment in the North as well as provokes angry refutation of slavery in the South. Even when Abraham Lincoln met Stove in 1862, he said that she was a little woman who wrote the book that made a war. However, as the impact of the slavery in this book, many articles focus on the antislavery spirit, while neglect the Christianity showed in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which illustrate the incompatible of Christianity and slave system. In this paper, through analyzing the behavior and words of slaver Uncle Tom, Eliza and wealthy master Eva, it will give you a clear perspective of the Christianity in Uncle Tom’s Cabin.2Literature reviewUncle Tom’s Cabin is a famous book about anti-slavery written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. There are different schools of Uncle Tom’s Cabin criticism. One of the schools thinks that the book illustrates the slave well. Adam who argued in his A-South-Side view of slavery that Uncle Tom’s Cabin deceives the readers had to admit that ―no fictitious narrative of slavery could make a deeper impression that a book on this subject written by a female hand which knew well how to touch the chords of the human heart‖. While, another school think that this book is worth nothing. George Whicher in his book Literary History of the United States says that ―Nothing attributable to Mrs. Stowe or her handiwork can account for the novel's enormous vogue; its author's resources as a purveyor of Sunday-school fiction were not remarkable. She had at most a ready command of broadly conceived melodrama, humor, and pathos, and of these popular sentiments she compounded her book." There is still another school think feminist theory can also be seen at play in Stowe's book, with the novel as a critique of the patriarchal nature of slavery. For Stowe, blood relations rather than paternalistic relations between masters and slaves formed the basis of families. Moreover, Stowe viewed national solidarity as an extension of a person's family, thus feelings of nationality stemmed from possessing a shared race. Consequently she advocated African colonization for freed slaves and not amalgamation into American society. For my part, I think through describing Uncle Tom, Eliza, and Eva, the book show Christianity and reflect the incompatible of Christianity and slave system.3 Christianity3.1Christ’s incarnationUncle Tom, an honest and goodness slave of Arthur Shelby. He is the assistant of his owner. He is so virtuous that the neighbor black people regard him as a priest. When he knows that his owner Shelby plans to sell Eliza and her son as well as himself for money to pay off debts, he decides to obey his owner rather than escape as he knows others will be sold if he is not. Through this behavior, we can find a prototype in the Holy Bible—Jesus. Both of them can sacrifice themselves in order to save others. What‘s more, Tom often spread Gospel to other slavers in their miserable time so as to give their hope. All of this actually is Jesus spread the graciousness of god through Tom. In his new owner Simon Legree‘s house, when he refuses to tell Legree where the two escaped slave girl is going, he is tortured to death, but never lose his Christ faith. This experience is just the same as Jesus has experienced, and Tom is the Jesus in black skin. While Tom forgive the people who used to treat him cruelly, which is so unusual that is almost divine. This is also what we can see in Jesus. Jesus forg ives those who treat him badly for he prays, ―Father, forgive them, for theyknow not what they do.Tom never betrays Shelby even he can to do so because the farm is under his control. While, Shelby betray his most loyal slave Tom since childhood as he need money. Jesus is sold by his apostle Judas who is prompted by his desire for money. So they are all betrayed and sold by the ones who are close to them, and Tom struggles with his faith, as Jesus does in the last hours in his life when he says, ―my go d, why have you forsaken me?‖Tom also has the same character with Jesus. He is ready to help others. When he is in his second owner Augustine St. Clare‘s house, he meet an old slave who has lost her children as she pay all her attention to take care of her hostess. Tom show sympathy and spread Gospel to her. It‘s a kind of like Jesus come to the world and helps others. Even when he is dying, he tells George, the son of Shelby, ―Ye don‘t know! ‗Pears like I loves‘ em all! I loves every creatur‘, everywhar!—it‘s nothing but love! O, Mas‘r George! What a thing‘t is to be a Christian!‖(Zhao 410) Through this we can see that Uncle Tom is a faithful Christian.3.2Christian freedomEliza is a beautiful slave woman who is brought up by Shelby. She married harries, a slave in the neighbor farm, and give birth to three children. As the first two children is dead, Eliza love the youngest son Harry very much. She is a devout Christian, and firmly believes in god. Once her husband Harry complains that his owner is cruel and wants to take revenge, Eliza tell her husband to endure all the suffering and never betray the owner. She even asks her husband to believe in god so that he can be saved. However, when she heard that Shelby is going to sell her son, she is so scared that decides to bring her son escaped immediately. On her way escape, Ohio River stop her, and she must cross it or to be arrest by the pursuers. Finally, she bravely hops on the ice and walk through the ice raft. We can also find a prototype in the Holy Bible—theescaped Israel. God promise Israel that they can live a happy life in Canaan. God helps them in their way escaping. When Mose lead the escaping Israelites arriving at the Red Sea, the river stopped them, and they are pursued by the Egyptians. At this time, God blow a strong wind, and dried the sea to save those Israelites. In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Eliza is the escaping Israelites and the river is the Red Sea. She can across the river is also helped by God.Eliza is contradictory person. On the one hand, she is loyal to her owner. On the other hand, when she knows that her son is being sold, she firmly decides to escape. The same is true of the Israelites. They betray Pharaoh is also to pursue free and happy life.3.3Christian loveEva is the daughter of a slaveholder Augustine St. Clare. Her name, Eva, definitely promotes the idea and imagine of angel. She always dressed in white, resembles an earthly angle-beautiful. While in spirit, she is full of love, like a good guardian angel. The reason for Eva to ask her father to buy Tom is that she wants Tom to be happy. In her eyes, there are many things beyond her knowledge, such as, why Tom get separated from his wife, why there is nobody love Topsy and so on. In her mind, she thinks that all she needs to do is to love all the people around her. She spread Gospel to slaves, makes them happy and transfers her father‘s mind of slave as well.Eva has no discriminate against black people. She thinks everyone is born equal, if she can relieve slave‘s pain; she is willing to do die for them. In chapter XXVI of Uncle Tom‘s Cabin, when Eva is dying, she asks that all the slaves surround her beside, where she gives each of them a golden lock of hair and tells them they must be Christian so that they can see each other in Heaven. ―If you love me, you must (I)want you to remember that there is a beautiful world, where Jesus is. I am going there, and you can go there…you must be Christians…If you want t o be Christian, Jesuswill help you. You must pray to him, you must read‖ (Zhao 285). Just as her name ―Evangeline‖ suggests, she is an evangelist to everyone.Eva dies in an early age. This suggests that she is not belonging to the world. Her thoughts and behavior is not accordance with the society.4ConclusionIn conclusion, we can see that Uncle Tom actually is the Christ‘s incarnation. He experiences the same difficulties just as the Jesus does. Both of them finally are tortured to death. However, he forgives all the people who used to treat him badly, which is also the same thing that Jesus does. Meanwhile, Eliza is a slave woman who is loyal to her owner. While, in order to save her son, she betrayed her loyal, which is also the same thing as Israelites in the Bible does for their free and happy life. The last one is the young master Eva; she is the embodiment of angel. She thinks everyone is equal instead of discriminating against black people and treating them as slaves. She is a character full of Christian love. The Bible, as one of the pillar of the western literature, is not only a Christian book, but also the source of European literature. Many protagonists in the European literature can find its own prototype in the Bible. The influence is beyond imagination. Through analyzing the character Uncle Tom, Eliza, and Eva, we can clearly see the Christianity in book Uncle Tom‘s Cabin. It reveals the truth that slave system is the root cause of the tragedy of black slaves. Christianity and slave system is incompatible like water and fire. Only the slave system is abolished, can Uncle Tom‘s tragedy will never happens again.Work CitedJane, Tompkins. ―Sentimental Power: Uncle Tom's Cabin and the Politics of Literary History‖ The Cultural Work of American Fiction.
