Temptation(引诱)
Temptation is a force usually attracting people to do immoral(不道德的)things. No one escapes its spell.
Many people have failed because they have become slaves to temptation. Money is a typical tool of temptation. Some youngsters go astray(迷路)beyond cure because of various kinds of temptation. Shot by the bullets coated(上胶的) by “sugar”, some officials are unable to extricate (使摆脱)from abusing their power for personal gain. We have learned that some people betrayed their country because they have been bribed(行贿)by their enemies. Although their duty was to serve their country, the vast amount of money offered by the enemies made their palms itchy. They couldn’t resist the temptation to become rich at once instead of struggling for a lifetime to earn only a little. At last they did some bad things, damaging the interests of their country.
However, the character of a man is, as a rule, determined in his childhood. At that time, his parents, as well as his teachers, must inform them of the dagger of temptation.
Laziness
As everyone knows , laziness is a sin(罪孽). We have probably all had lectures pointing out that laziness is immora l and wasteful, and that lazy people will never amount to anything in life. But some people who appear to be lazy are suffering from much more serious problems. They may be so distrustful(不信任的) of their fellow workers that they are unable to join in any group task for fear of ridicule(嘲笑) or fear of having their ideas stolen. These people who seem lazy may be paralyzed(使麻痹)by a fear of failure that prevents fruitful(富有成效的)work. Or other sorts of fantasies(幻想) may prevent work. Some people are so busy planning, sometimes planning great deals of fantastic achievement, that they are unable to deal with whatever “lesser” work on hand. Nevertheless, laziness can actually be helpful to procrastinators(延迟). Some people may look lazy when they are really thinking, planning, contemplating(冥思苦想),or researching. We should all remember that some great scientific discoveries occurred by chance or while someone were thinking deeply. So be careful when you’re tempted to call someone lazy. That person may be thinking or planning his or her next work.
Rumor(谣言)
Rumor is the most primitive(原始的) way of spreading stories—by passing them on from mouth to mouth. But civilized(文明的)countries in normal times have better sources of news than rumor. They have radio, television, and newspaper.
In times of stress and confusion, however, rumor emerges and becomes widespread.Rumors spread especially rapidly during wars when the customary news sources no longer give out enough information. Since the people cannot learn through legitimate(合法的) channels, rumor thrives(繁荣).
Ever those who do not believe them often repeat rumors. There is a fascination(魅力) about them. The reason is that the cleverly designed(设计好的) rumor gives expression to something deep in the hearts of the victims(牺牲者). Pessimistic(悲观的) rumors about defeat and disasters show that the people who repeat them are worried and anxious. Optimistic rumors about production
record or peace bring about confidence---and often overconfidence.
EMOTION
Showing feelings
What makes life worth living? There are many possible answers to this question such as “good health”,”a comfortable home”, “plenty of friends”or”long holidays”. But these things would not make life worth living, unless we were able to enjoy them. Whether or not we can enjoy these things depends on the emotions.
Emotion is the word we use to describe feelings such as love, hatred(仇恨),joy, sorrow(悲痛), fear, anger, hope, gloom(忧郁的心情), etc. These feelings play an important part in our lives: they not only influence our happiness but also affect our health.
Any strong emotion produces certain changes inside the body. For example, when a person is frightened or angry, his heart beats faster and the activity of his stomach stops. If he is frequently frightened or angry these changes will be taking place all the time. If this goes on for long, his health will be affected. He will begin to suffer from tiredness, stomach trouble, sleeplessness and loss of weight. These changes are sometime described as “suffering from his nerves”. Actually, it is not his nerves that are responsible for his suffering, but his emotion. People often speak of the need of control emotions. And intelligent man will constantly monitor (监视)his emotions. It is true that emotions can surge(汹涌) up so quickly that you may do something on the spur of the moment you will regret later. One thing you can do when you have a strong feeling ---- whether it is a good one or a bad one --- is to try to determine what caused it. If it is a bad feeling, then you will know to keep away from situation like that in the future. If it is a good feeling, then you will know what will give you more good feeling.
Another way to control your emotions is to tall about how you feel with other people. If you can say why you feel bad, then you will be halfway to getting a grip(控制) on that feeling. It will be as though the thinking part of the brain is helping the feeling part of your brain slow down a little. Some emotions are better avoided completely. The cold, sinister(恶意的), snake-like emotions of hate and jealousy(妒忌) should always be contained(泰然自若的) as soon as they begin to tempt(引诱) a person. Jealousy and hate make a person mentally small and stupid. They should not be shown and they should be extinguished(熄灭).
Laughter
Laughter is surely one of humanity's(人道, 人性) greatest gifts, for the ability to laugh--- to appreciate the pleasure or absurdity(荒谬) in daily activities---- allows people, young and old alike, to keep problems in perspective(洞察力). Children are natural laughers. In situations, both appropriate(适当的) and inappropriate, the chuckles(咯咯地笑), giggles(傻笑), and outright peals(洪亮的) of laughter of children can emphasize their innocence(清白), their joyful ignorance(无知) of the problems of the world. Levity(轻率) among adults is, unfortunately, far less common, but it is equally welcome. How fortunate are the adults who can react to potentially(潜在地) frustrating(使人沮丧的) situations--- a collapsed(倒塌的) tent(帐篷), a split(劈开) seam(缝) in a pair of pants(裤子), a surprise guest--- and see the sheer(全然的) absurdity(荒谬) of their attempts to maintain absolute control. Laughter expresses pleasure,
eases(缓和) tension, and lifts the spirit,. It is a gift we should all share more often.
Facial(脸的)l expression
We have two different faces we can show the world. We can smile, or we can frown(皱眉). The face we choose to put on each day affects us a lot. Smiling is, of course, the better way to live. Smiling keeps us healthy. When we frown, we tighten(绷紧) up our faces and our bodies become tense(绷紧的,紧张的). A smiling face is a relaxed face. Smiling makes us feel good, and it keeps our bodies functioning(运行) better. Smiling also makes us look good. No one likes to look at a person who is frowning. Frowns are ugly(丑的). Such people make us want to turn and walk away. In addition, smiling is important for success in the business world and the social occasion. A smiling salesman will far outsell(在推销上胜过) a competitor who frowns. A smiling doctor will help his patients relax. A smiling lawyer will win the hearts of the jury(【律】陪审团).
In conclusion, smiling is good f or our lives in every way. It is something that everyone knows how to do. All it takes is a little effort. However, we do not have to feel happy to start smiling as the song says,”when you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.”
Being shy
Nearly everyone is shy in some ways. Shy people are over-concerned(担心的) with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome(令人烦恼的) thoughts often swirl(打旋) in their minds: what kind of impression(印象) am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? If shyness is making you uncomfortable, it may be time for a few lessons in self-confidence. Shy ness can be overcome with determined(已下决心的) and patient efforts in building self-confidence. You can build your confidence by following some suggestions.
First, make decision not to hold back in conversation. What you have to say is just as important as what other people say. And don't turn down party invitations(邀请) just because of your shyness.
Second, prepare yourself for being with others in groups. Make a list of the good qualities you have. Then make a list of ideas, experiences, and skills you would like to share with other people. Think about what you would like to say in advance(先行的). Then say it.
Third, if you start feeling self-conscious(不自然的) in group, take a deep breath and focus your attention on other people. Remember, you are not alone. Other people are concerned(担心的) about disappointments(失望). Profit(有利) them as lessons instead of frustration(frustration). As each of us is an individual, we behave in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it become to live up to our full potential. No one ever gets over being shy completely, but most people do learn to live with their shyness. Even entertainers(请客者) admit that they often feel shy. They work at fighting their shy feeling so they can face the cameras and the public.
Just making the effort to control shyness can have many rewards(报答). But perhaps the best reason to fight shyness is to give other people a chance to know more about you.
Mood
Everyone suffers from an occasional(偶尔的) bad mood, but I am in a bad mood more often than other people. As a result, I have developed a list of helpful hints(示意,暗示) for dealing with depression(意气消沉,沮丧). One thing I have learned to do is keep a mood diary. About four times a day, I jot(草草记下) down a one-word description of my mood at that moment---- sad, tired, frustrated, happy, and so on. Then I ask myself questions like “ what event preceded(优于?) this mood? Have I just eaten a lot of junk(废弃的旧物) food or drunk a lot of coffee? Have I felt this way before?” after keeping this diary for a while, I have begun to see patterns(图案) to my moods. I've found for example that consuming(消费的) a lot of salty foods like chips makes me feel tense. Another mood-controlling hint(线索) that I've taken is to exercise every day. Exercise seems to prevent depression, and it also helps me sleep better. Any type of exercise works, including jogging,( 慢跑运动衣), dancing, and even walking around the block. I can also overcome depression by giving myself a small treat those times when my spirits are under the weather(under the weather==不舒服),for instance, I will go to a movie, listen to a record, or try on a new shirt. If I still feel miserable(痛苦的),I try to keep my chin up, for no bad mood lasts forever.
Dealing with tension
Caught up in the rush of life, we have forgotten how to live, how to find simple things charming(迷人的). Taking a walk at night under the stars provides something that business deals cannot provides; enjoying warm sunlight, birds' songs and flowers’fragrance(芬芳) is not for poets only, but for everyone. Meditation(沉思), too, is a great need. Meditation brings understanding of life's relationships, purposes(目标),objectives(目的),and rewards, sharp focus. It is an aid for tense nerves.
The only way to cope with tension is to learn how to manage one’s body and one’s mind. Resting includes time in bed as well as short periods of relaxation. One may relax when walking on the street, by flexing(收缩) his muscles and diverting(快乐的) his mind to things around him. Moreover, enough time should be taken for a leisurely(从容不迫地) lunch. The most inefficient(无效率的) way of handing tiredness and pressure is to take stimulant(兴奋剂) or drugs.
Everyone has only 24 hours a day, and a limited number of years to live. So we need to admit limitations of physical and mental strength, and to keep within those limits.
Happiness
How to be happy
Happiness is them most precious thing in life. Without it, a man will feel that his ill fate has taken charge of(支配) him and the world is utterly(完全地) dark and dreadful(可怕的). On that account, his body grows weaker, his work slackens(变松弛), and above all, he thinks he would rather die than live. ”how to be happy, then?” you may ask. Now, this is the very puzzle that we are going to solve. First, do things in accordance with your conscience(良心); That is, do to others, as you would have other do to you. Secondly, pay more attention to your health, which is the root of success, for a sound constitution(体质) enables you to succeed. Thirdly, worry and sorrow are of no use at all! In case you meet with some hard situation, you must try to overcome
it without any hesitation(犹豫. Willpower(意志力) is essential(不可缺的) to happiness. And the last, but not the least, adopt(采取) an optimistic attitude toward life, for the world is still in making and you can have a share in it . In this way, true happiness can be obtained.
Happiness
What is happiness? Different people have different ideas. Some people are rich; they think they are happy. Other people have many friends, so they feel happy. Still others are happy because their lives are meaningful. Happiness attracts(吸引) everyone. For children, happiness often suggests eating something good or playing with toys. For a stamp collector, stamps bring more delight than meals. And for a scientist, a discovery or an invention rather than anything else gives him greatest satisfaction.
There was once a beggar who was always happy. The king saw him and wondered why he was so happy because he was so poor. However, the king could have whatever he wanted; yet he himself was not happy at all. Thus we can see one’s happiness doesn’t depend on whether he is rich or poor. Happiness is a state of mind. As long as one thinks he’s content and satisfied, he is happy. As everything exist only because its opposite(对立的), happiness exists only when pain exists. Just as a person who does not know failure never knows success, a person, who has not experienced suffering or sadness never knows what happiness means.
Happiness always promises (允诺) a hope by which people go on living. When they come to the point of losing hope because they have suffered a great deal, it is often the time when happiness comes that will give them the courage and desire(渴望) to live.
Cheer up and be happy. Happiness is not far from you. It’s just around you. Try to grasp(抓牢) it and enjoy it.
A pleasant state of mind
Happiness can be described as a positive(实在的事物, 确定的) mood and a pleasant state of mind.
A good education and income are usually considered necessary for happiness. But the rich are not necessary to be happier than the middle-income group or even those with very low incomes. People with a college education are somewhat(稍微) happier than those who did not graduate from high school; It is believed that this mainly because they have more opportunities to control their lives. Yet people with a college education may be less happy than those with on college education. Moreover, having good health can be very important to people because they can feel happy and have energy to do what they would like to do. Nevertheless(然而), poor health does not rule out(排除) happiness except for the dying or those in great pain. It should be noted that people quickly get used to what they have, and they are happier when they feel they are increasing their level no matter how little it has be improved..
The best formula(客套话) for happiness is to be able to develop the ability to tolerate(宽恕) frustration(挫败), to have a personal involvement(缠绕) and commitment(承诺), and to develop self-confidence and self-esteem(尊重).
Wealth and happiness
Wealth has always been what some people long for. It is true that most of them try to acquire(取得) wealth(财富) by means of honest labor. Their efforts contribute to the welfare(幸福,福利) of society and at the same time to the accumulation(累积) of their wealth. This brings them happiness.
There is no doubt that wealth brings happiness especially in modern society, where various kinds of modern conversation, new fashions and entertainments make their appearance with each passing day. These can improve a person’s life he or she has money to buy them.
But wealth does always not go hand in hand with happiness. Wealth may encourage those weak-willed person to be addicted(沉溺于某种) to some harmful habits such as drug taking or gambling(赌掉),and bring about their own ruin(毁灭). Also a person may lose his reason and go astray(迷路) if he is passionately(热情地) devote to seeking wealth. Therefore, one can never count on wealth to achieve happiness.
Campus love
Nowadays, campus love is popular. Some college teachers argue that students should give up love for the sake of learning. They maintain that love is time consuming and influences one’s learning. Some students, however, hold that a student who falls in love will study harder and will make greater progress. They don't believe that a person in love lags(落后) behind in his studies.
There are different kinds of love on campus. Some students regard love as killing time or adding color; some are pragmatic(实际的), thinking it's difficult to find a better partner after graduation; the purpose of others is for seeking the impetus(推动力) of study. Anyhow, far away from home and alone, seeking friendship, understanding and love, the boys and girls easily find comfort and appreciation from one another.
As a mater of fact, love is a sharp double-bladed(有刀刃的) knife. Having it will make you very happy; while losing it, you always feel disappointed and depressed. When the bond(结合力) of love broken, going on studying as usual or sinking(下沉) lament(悲痛) or even being crazy depend on us. We will not let romantic entanglement(纠缠) interfere(妨碍) with our studies. Love is a natural and quiet. During the process of love we will experience romantic love, frustrating love and critical(关键性的) love and real love. True love will overcome our pain and dismay(气馁), warm our heart, and spark(点燃) our spirit with delight(愉快) forces but not resistance(阻力).
The information age
“Knowledge is power.” This is more obviously true with the advent(到来) of the information age. With the rapid development of science and technology, man’s knowledge is increasing very quickly. More and more books and scientific papers are published every year. It is said that the
total of man’s knowledge doubles every ten years. Besides, information spreads very quickly through television and computer networks, and people in different countries can share their knowledge and information in a fantastic(惊人的) short period. Like population explosion, information explosion in our times.
At the beginning of the industrial revolution, a country's comparative(相对的,比较的) advantage depended largely on the natural resources endowed(天生具有) by nature. Then, people experienced several phases(阶段) in industry revolution: the primary industry(agriculture), the secondary industry(manufacturing 工业), and the tertiary(第三的) industry(服务). Now, we are in the fourth industry stage----the information industry.
It is argued that in future people should no longer be classified(分类的) as white collars(衣领) or blue collars, but rather as knowledge or non-knowledge workers. The knowledge workers can not only read and write, and perform rote(死记硬背) tasks, they must meet the basic requirements(需要) of computer literacy(读写能力) and constantly(不断地) conceive(想象,构想) new way to match(相适合) the changing demands of increasing productivity(生产率,生产力).
It is people mastering the most advanced knowledge who will take the lead. Systems developers(开发者), computer scientists and programmers, management analysts and inventors are in most demand in the industry countries.
The challenge(挑战) facing every country is to resuscitate(复苏) its investment(投资) and training. The only way to get greater knowledge is though education and training. Knowledge, like capital(首都) and material resources, has become an essential(不可缺的) factor of production. Therefore, the educational system of a society ought to enable its members to make a rapid transition(过渡) to adapt to the knowledge-based war. Otherwise, that society will inevitably(不可避免的) lag(落后) behind.
The world is getting smaller
The moment we mention someone else, during our leisure(空暇时间) talking with friends, they would say they know that person. At that time, we always cry out,” what a small Qingdao!”
With the progress of science and technology, more and more modern forms of transportation(【美】运输工具) appear nowadays. Buses, trains and ships have come into use for nearly a century, and traveling by air is getting common in our days. We are able to get to Washington by air form Beijing in hours. A hundred years ago, the trip would take us tow months. The times when man could only travel by foot is gone for good(永远). In addition, vehicles(运载工具) can carry goods to any from every corner of the world. So, wherever you go now, you can find the commodities(商品) more or less similar.
Communication between people is becoming more convenience and frequent(频繁的) in this great era(时代) full of information. Now, people can call each other with visual telephones. Besides, the internet is amazing for people to contact(接触) each other. In a minute, the event happens in any country will be know by the whole world. You can stay at home and work for a company at the same time with the help of fax(传真机), telephone and e-mail. Although in urgent(紧急的) need of learning advanced technology, many people cannot study abroad because of limit income and time. Now they can take courses through the internet. They have classes on line; they graduate at any time available. Moreover, people can inquire(询问) the doctors on internet. A lot of the internet citizen have already visited web site of medicine for information related to health.
In conclusion, with the development of science and technology, the world will be getting smaller and smaller.
Competition and cooperation
Cooperation and competition are both important. They are attributes(归因于,属性) which are equally necessary for a person to achieve success in his life.
Learn to be cooperative. No one likes a selfish, greedy, or arrogant(自大的) individual. However, everyone likes a considerate(体谅的) and cooperative person. Everything we do today, whether in doing business or making friends, depend upon our ability to get along with one another. In our society, most tasks demand the cooperation of many individuals so that they can be accomplished effectively. In this situation, we must be supportive(支援的) and cooperative. Each person is like a small part of a machine. If only one part is out of order, the machine can’t be running well. Besides, transportation and communication systems are rapidly developing and people all over the world can get in touch with each other more easily. It is hard for a person who is isolated(孤立的) from the society to have a deep understanding of the world he lives and to accomplish(实现) a feat(功绩) in his career. Cooperation is becoming more and more important for a person to earn a good life.
Being competitive also has a place in life. If you want to achieve more success and be better than others, you must work harder, study more diligently(勤奋地), and adapt yourself to competition. The desire to succeed and do better than others inspires(激励) us to work harder. If there were no competition, a sports meet would never be exciting and successful, and we would never have champions(冠军的地位).
No doubt, we often find there is an inseparable(不可分离的) relationship between competition and cooperation. In a football match, either team is competing with other. But each member of the team is cooperating with his teammates.
We cooperate with others to be more competitive; we compete to earn a better environment for cooperation. Thus we can make progress(前进) continuously. Only competition together with cooperation leads us to realize our goals and satisfy our needs.
Competition
Competition is a common phenomenon(现象) in our social life. We compete when we play games and when we try to do better than others in our study. There is constant(不变的) competition for academic(大学的) degrees, jobs, customers, money and so forth. In a sense(感觉), competition is one of the motive(推动的) force to the development of society.
In the natural world, the weak will be replaced by the strong and the fittest can live; therefore, the only way to survive(活下来) is to be competitive. Growing in a competitive environment is important for a child because future adult life is difficult. Finding a good job, for example, is an extremely competitive activity. Today, most people obtain knowledge through various ways and a large number of people get good education. There are also many people who have higher degrees in their special fields. The quality of people is rapidly increasing. Competition is more violent(激烈的) that what we thought it should be. The potentially(潜在地) successful job applicant(申请人) has to be prepared in a stronger position by gaining more qualification(资格) and experience. In the sports contests(竞争), the strongest will come out as winners. They become our heroes and they are glorified(赞美). In the business world, to beat your competitors, you must be better than
the other employees. Otherwise you will be defeated(击败).
In fact, the only way our world reward(报答) people is to give laurels(殊荣) to the winners, not to the losers(失败者). What is more, by attempting to compete at different activities, we learn to win and lose, gain experience and know our strengths(实力) and weaknesses. Competition prepares us for the tough(坚韧的) things in life.
To go ahead, to acquire possession(所有物), we should be competitive. To us, industriousness(勤奋) and ambition(抱负) are positive(确实的) values.
Whether in games, in study or in business alike, the aim is to win the game, the degree, the trophy(战利品), and the contract(合同). Learning to be competitive is clearly the best preparation for life.
Hard life is good for children
In china, with the enforcement(强制) of the birth control policy, most parents have only one child. The parents and grandparents have shown too much love to their only child; the number of spoiled(被宠坏的) children has increased in China. Consequently(必然地), how to bring up the child becomes a serious problem to many young parents.
The only child has shown complete dependence on the parents. Many five to seven-year-olds still hang(悬挂方式) on their patents in almost every aspect of life, from buttoning cloths to going to the toilet. These children have never learnt to do elementary household chores(家庭杂务). Even worse, the only children tend to be ill mannered and self-centered. They often fight over something instead of cooperating together. Parents give them calculators(计算者), turn on the television and leave the teaching to teachers. Some parents even offer material incentives(鼓励) to reluctant(不情愿的) children to lure(引诱) them to learn and to do something. They are a generation of kids who have never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do things for them.
The key to solving the problem of spoiled(被宠坏的) children lies in correctly educating both children and adult. In my opinion, hard life is good for children. Parents should be used to saying no to the kid, and let a child do hard work. Working hard will give him an opportunity to taste the bitterness quickly. Besides, hard work may enable him to cherish(珍爱) the fruit of the others’labor.
Human society is full of tests and trials. Flowers from a greenhouse(温室) can never withstand a storm. Children who live luxuriously(奢侈地) and comfortably can never become somebody in the future. Besides, to reduce the chance of spoiled children, parents and society must work together. Meanwhile, both primary and nursery(幼儿室) school should step up their efforts in training children.
Imagination
Everyone says,” there is always a gap between imagination and reality, the former is always more ideal(理想) than the latter.” Although most people know that we cannot equate imagination with reality, people still find it hard to resist the temptation of imagination, for it is so sweet and wonderful, especially for me when I was working hard for my university dream in high school. Endless homework, heavy pressure could n’t prevent me from drawing a fascinating(迷人的)。
