广东省汕头市金山中学2013届高三英语上学期期末模拟考试试题
本试卷共三部分,满分135分,考试用时120分钟。

When I was a law professor, a student reported that I made an error in grading his exam by giving him too many points. He was right , and after thanking him for his honesty, I changed the grade in my 1 . His beaming face turned to shock. “You’re 2 my grade?” he said angrily. “I would never have come in if ……”
He didn’t finish the sentence , but it was obvious that his display of honesty was 3 . He thought he’d have it all—praise and the higher grade.
Several colleagues thought I should have let the higher grade 4 because all I’d accomplished was to discourage him from being honest in the future. And every time I tell this story some people agree with this 5 .
But I can’t see how I could give good reason for worsening my 6 in grading by undermining (损害) the honesty of all my grades by failing to correct an error. The grade itself would be
a dishonest 7 of his knowledge and it would have been 8 to other students. How could I
9 give a student a gift of an unearned grade?
I know 10 reporting an error in one’s favor is unusual, but, like 11 too much change, it’s clearly the right thing to do. People of character, those with real honesty, hate to give up 12_ as much as anyone else. The difference is that for them a good conscience and reputation is _13 enough to give reason for the cost of doing the right thing.
Perhaps lowering the student’s grade did 14 him from being honest in the future, but bribing (贿赂)him to be honest so that he does the right thing when it’s cost-free would have _15
him even more. The duty to be honest is about right and wrong, not risks and rewards.

Inventor, physicist, surveyor, astronomer, biologist, artist… Robert Hooke was all these and more. Some say he was the greatest experimental scientist of the seventeenth century. Once he worked with renowned men of science like Christian Huygens, Antony van Leeuwenhoek, Robert Boyle, Isaac Newton and the great architect, Christopher Wren.
Hooke’s early education began at home, und er the guidance of his father. He entered Westminster School at the age of thirteen, and form there he went to Oxford, where he came in contact with some of the best scientists in England. Hooke impressed them with his skill at designing experiments and devising instruments. In 1662, at the age of twenty—eight, he was named Curator of Experiments of the newly formed Royal Society of London. Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that it had no money to pay him!
Watching living things through the microscope was one his favorite occupations. He devised
a compound microscope for this purpose. One day while observing a cork(软木) under a microscope,
he saw honeycomb—like structures. They were cells—the smallest units of life. In fact, it was Hooke who coined the term “cell” as the boxlike cells of the cork reminded him of the cells
of a monastery(修道院).
Perhaps because of his varied interests, Hooke often left experiments unfinished. Others took up where he left off and then claimed sole(独占的)credit. This sometimes led to quarrels with colleagues. One work that he finished was his book MICROGRAPHIA, a volume that reveals the immense potential of the microscope. The book also includes, among other things, ideas on gravity
and light which may have helped scientists like Newton while they were developing their own theories on these phenomena.
Hooke made valuable contributions to astronomy too. A crater(陨石坑) on the moon is named after him in appreciation of his services to this branch of science.

Easter(复活节) is still a great day for worship, randy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for bunnies.
And no, not because the kids like to pull their ears. The culprit is climate change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures arc having harmful effects on at least five species of rabbit in the US.
Take the Lower Keys March rabbit, for instance. An endangered species that lives in the Lower Florida Keys, this species of cottontail is a great swimmer — it lives on the islands! — but it is already severely affected by development and now by rising levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of only 0. 6 meters will send these guys jumping to higher ground and a 0.9-meter rise would wipe out their habitat completely.
The snowshoe hare, on the other hand, has a color issue. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, each designed to give them better cover from predators(捕食者). As the number of days with snow decreases all across the country, however, more and more bunnies arc being left in white fur during brown dirt days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators. Researchers know that the color change is controlled by the number of hours of sunlight, but whether the rabbit will be able to adapt quick enough to survive is a big question. The National Wildlife Federation has reported that hunters have noticed their numbers are already markedly down.
American pikas or rock rabbits, a relative of rabbits and hares, might be the firs' of these species to go extinct due to climate change. About 7-8 inches long, pikas live high in the cool, damp mountains west of the Rocky Mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally migrate to higher ground —but they already occupy the mountaintops. They can't go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their habitat beats up.
The volcano rabbit has the same problem. These rabbits live on the slopes of volcanoes in Mexico, and recent studies have shown that the lower range of their habitat has already shifted upward about 700 meters, but there are not suitable plants for them to move higher, so they are
stuck in the middle. Scientists are concerned about their populations.
Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their habitats have been destroyed by development. Several populations, such as the Columbia Basin pygmy, almost went extinct and were saved by zoo breeding programs. Pygmy rabbits also rely on winter cover by digging tunnels through the snow to escape predators, but lesser snowfall is leaving them exposed.
All of this gives new meaning to dressing up in a giant bunny costume this Easter.

Pop stars today enjoy what once only belonged to the royalty. Wherever they go, people turn out in their thousands to greet them. The crowds go wild trying to catch a brief glimpse of their smiling, colorfully dressed idols. The stars are transported in their chauffeur driven
. They are surrounded by a permanent entourage(随从) of managers, press agents and bodyguards. Photographs of them appear regularly in the press and all their comings and goings are reported, for, like royalty, pop stars are news. If they enjoy many of the privileges of royalty, they certainly share many of the inconveniences as well. It is dangerous for them to make unscheduled appearances in public. They must be constantly shielded from the adoring crowds who idolize them. They are no longer private
individuals, but public property. The financial rewards they receive for this sacrifice cannot be calculated, for their rates of pay are great.
And why not? Society has always rewarded its top entertainers lavishly. The great days of Hollywood have become legendary: famous stars enjoyed fame, wealth and adulation (奉承) on an
A single gramophone record nowadays may earn much more in royalties than the films of the past ever did. The competition for the title “Top of the Pops” is fierce, but the rewards are truly huge.
It is only right that the stars should be paid in this way. Don’t the top men in industry earn enormous salaries for the service they perform to their companies and their countries? Pop stars earn vast sums in foreign currency — often more than large industrial companies — and the taxman can only be grateful for their massive annual contributions to the exchequer(国库). So who would begrudge them their rewards?
It’ s all very well for people in boring jobs to complain about the successes and rewards of others. People who make envious remarks should remember that the most famous stars represent only the tip of the iceberg. For every famous star, there are hundreds of others struggling to earn a living. A man working in a steady job and looking forward to a pension at the end of it has no right to expect very high rewards. He has chosen security and peace of mind, so there will always be a limit to what he can earn. But a man who attempts to become a star is taking enormous risks. He knows at the outset that only a handful of competitors ever get to the very top. He knows that years of concentrated effort may be rewarded with complete failure. But he knows, too, that the rewards for success are very high indeed: they are the payback for the huge risks involved and once he makes it, he will certainly earn them. That’ s the essence of private enterprise.

As we all know, life is full of dreams and having a good dream is of great importance in our daily life. Without a good dream, people can’t make progress; without a good dream, countries can’t develop; without a good dream, the world can’t become so beautiful! And I hold the strong belief that everyone, whether he is old or young, poor or rich, junior or senior, does have a good dream! After all, dreaming is certainly a positive part of our life, and wishing for good things, however, costs nothing!
What’s more, it is important to fly our dreams, especially for those who are Senior 3 students. It is high time for them to fly their dreams. If they can’t let out dreams fly, the dream would just be a dream, not reality!
Therefore, it is no wonder that so many people have a dream since their childhood. With a nice dream, China succeeded to host the 29th Olympic Games in 2008; with a nice dream, Hongkong returned to the motherland peacefully in 1997; with a nice dream, Yuan Longping rids the world of hunger; with a nice dream, Michael Jordon becomes the most popular basketball star; with a nice dream I can stand on this stage to compete in the final English speech contest. And with an aim of achieving success, I must do the best!
So my good friends, if you want to realize your dream, please do not be afraid in face of difficulties or give up in face of failure nor lose your dream in face of pains. You must keep going forward bravely! Just fly your dream highly above the sky!

基础写作
On World Reading Day, we carried out a survey about the reading habits of high school students. According to the survey, 45.75% of the students read books they buy and 8.5% of them download e-books or read online. 35.75% of the students borrow books from friends or the library and 11% of them read in the school reading-room. From the survey we can see that the use rate of the school reading-room is not high enough. We suggest that its opening hours be extended and meanwhile bookstores be invited into the school to make it convenient for students to buy books.。
