So what is rewilding?
Imagine our natural homes growing instead of shrinking. Imagine species (物种)diversifying instead of declining. That's rewilding. Rewilding is ecological restoration. Rewilding offers hope for wildlife, humans and the planet.
Why is rewilding important and necessary?
●Our natural ecology is broken. The places where you would expect wildlife to exist have been reduced to wet deserts. The seabed has been destroyed and there have been no living creatures any more.
●Our wildlife is disappearing. Many wonderful species have declined over the past century. We've lost more of our large animals than any European country.
●We need keystone species. These vital species, including top predators (食肉动物), drive ecological processes. Their loss has worsened our living systems.
●Nature looks after us. Good natural ecology can provide us with clean air and water, prevent flooding and store carbon. Rewilding can leave the world in a better state than it is today.
What are challenges?
As a long-term project, our “rewilding britain” has its challenges. Many people are notinterested, because we have got used to the lack of native forests. Many farmers oppose the idea. They thought it a crazy idea to bring back predators because they would start killing farmanimals. It takes time to educate them. Above all, we need money! So we need your help!
Make a donation.
Help us bring back living systems and restore wild nature!
With your help we can. . .
●Open up new chances for rewilding and push for change.
●Develop tools to educate, influence and spread the word.
Thanks for your support.
21. Which of the following is the result of rewilding?
A. Species become various.
B. A lot of animals disappear.
C. Environments are destroyed.
D. Natural disasters happen regularly.
22. According to the passage, one of the challenges at present is_______.
A. people's doubts
B. a lack of volunteers
C. a shortage of time
D. farmers' disagreement
23. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce a new project.
B. To call on people to give money.
C. To warn people of the natural ecology.
D. To convince people to change their mind.

A Simple Lesson
“Another bad day at school?" my father asked as I came into the room.
“How could you tell? I didn't shut the door heavily or anything," I replied. Over the past two months I had either done this or thrown my backpack across the room ever time I came home from school. Papa thinks it has something to do with moving to a new house.
“I know this move has been hard on you. Leaving your friends and cousins behind is tough," Papa said, as he put his arm around my shoulder. “What you must remember is that, with a lot of hard work and some time, you will make new friends."
“You don't know how hard it is. This year my baseball team would have won the championship. They won't even give me a chance to pitch (投球) here. All I get to play is right field, and that's the worst!"
Papa turned toward me. "Things will get better, I promise you. Let me ask you, do you know why you were named David Lorenzo?"
“Yes, your name is David and grandfather's name is Lorenzo. "
“Very good, and what makes your grandfather so important?"
"He was the first in the family to come to this country and all that," I answered.
“That is only partly correct. Your grandfather was a very great man. In Mexico, he had been a teacher. When he came to America he could only get low-paid labor jobs because he didn't speak the language. It took him two years before he spoke English well enough to be allowed to teach here, but he did it. He never complained because he knew change could be difficult. Did he ever tell you that?" my father asked.
I looked down at my feet, ashamed at my behavior. “No. That must have been hard," I said sheepishly.
“Your grandfather taught me that if you let people see your talent, they will accept you for who you are. I want you to always remember what my father taught me, even if it takes a few years for people to see who you are," said Papa.
All I could say was, “Okay. " Then I asked, “What should I do now?"
Laughing, Papa said, “How about you pitch a few to me? You need some work. "
24. Why was the author unhappy that day?
A. Because he moved to a new country.
B. Because his baseball team lost the game.
C. Because he wasn't offered a chance to pitch.
D. Because he quarreled with his friends at school.
25. The father successfully changed his son's mood by_________.
A. asking him to train harder
B. playing baseball with him
C. telling his grandfather's story
D. introducing him some new friends
26. The underlined word "sheepishly" probably means________.
A. shyly
B. patiently
C. clumsily
D. cautiously
27. What can we infer about the author?
A. He thinks his father lives in the past.
B. He'd rather live with his grandfather.
C. He will continue to dislike school and everything.

Many of us listen to music while we work, thinking that it will help us to concentrate on the task at hand. And in fact, recent research has found that music can have beneficial effects on creativity. When it comes to other areas of performance, however, the impact of background music is more complicated.
The idea that listening to music when working is beneficial to output probably has its roots in the so-called "Mozart effect". Put simply, this is the finding that spatial rotation performance(空间旋转能力) is increased immediately after listening to the music of Mozart, compared to no sound at all.
How sound affects performance has been the topic of research for over 40 years, and is observed through a phenomenon called the irrelevant sound effect. To study irrelevant sound effect, participants in the research are asked to complete a simple task which requires them to recall a series of numbers or letters in the exact order in which they saw them. The tricky thing is being able to do this while ignoring any background noise.
Two key characteristics of the irrelevant sound effect are required for its observation. First, the task must require the person to use their rehearsal abilities( 复述能力), and second, the sound must contain acoustical variation(声学变化). Where the sound does not vary much acoustically, the performance of the task is much closer to that observed in quiet conditions.
The irrelevant sound effect itself comes from attempting to process two sources of ordered information at the same time- one from the task and one from the sound. Unfortunately, only the former is required to successfully perform the recall task, and the effort in ensuring that irrelevant order information from the sound is not processed actually hinders(阻碍) this ability.
A similar conflict is also seen when reading while in the presence of lyrical music. In this situation, the two sources of words—from the task and the sound—are in conflict. The cost is poorer performance of the task in the presence of music with lyrics.
What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or hinders performance depends on the task and on the type of music, and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels.
28. “Mozart effect" is mentioned to________.
A. explain how music can relax people
B. show music can improve performance
C. advise people to listen to Mozart music
D. stress Mozart music gains wide attention
29. It can be inferred that participants in the research________.
A. have improved their rehearsal ability
B. perform better in the quiet conditions
C. ignore the background noise successfully
D. prefer the music with great sound variation
30. Paragraph 6 is written to_______.
A. support an idea
B. make a contrast
C. introduce a topic
D. describe a fact
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Music shapes your life
B. Music develops your creativity
C. Choose quiet music for your work
D. Does music make you concentrate?
D
We talk continuously about how to make children more “resilient (有恢复力的)”,but whatever we're doing, it's not working. Rates of anxiety disorders and depression are rising rapidly among teenagers. What are we doing wrong?
Nassim Taleb invented the word “antifragile" and used it to describe a small but very important class of systems that gain from shocks, challenges, and disorder. The immune (免疫的) system is one of them: it requires exposure to certain kinds of bacteria and potential allergens (过敏原) in childhood in order to develop to its full ability.
Children's social and emotional abilities are as antifragile as their immune systems. If we overprotect kids and keep them “safe" from unpleasant social situations and negative emotions, we deprive (剥夺) them of the challenges and opportunities for self-building they need to grow strong. Such children are likely to suffer more when exposed later to other unpleasant but ordinary life events, such as teasing and social rejection.
It's not the kids' fault. In the UK, as in the US, parents became much more fearful in the1980s and 1990s as cable TV and later the Internet exposed everyone, more and more, to those rare occurrences of crimes and accidents that now occur less and less. Outdoor play and independent mobility went down; screen time and adult-monitored activities went up.
Yet free play in which kids work out their own rules of engagement, take small risks, and learn to master small dangers turns out to be vital for the development of adult social and even physical competence. Depriving them of free play prevents their social-emotional growth. Norwegian play researchers Ellen Sandseter and Leif Kennair warned: “We may observe an increased anxiety or mental disorders in society if children are forbidden from participating in age adequate risky play. "
They wrote those words in 2011. Over the following few years, their prediction came true. Kids born after 1994 are suffering from much higher rates of anxiety disorders and depression than did the previous generation. Besides, there is also a rise in the rate at which teenage girls are admitted to hospital for deliberately harming themselves.
What can we do to change these trends? How can we raise kids strong enough to handle the ordinary and extraordinary challenges of life? We can't guarantee that giving primary school children more independence today will bring down the rate of teenage suicide tomorrow. The links between childhood overprotection and teenage mental illness are suggestive but not clear-cut. Yet there are good reasons to suspect that by depriving our naturally antifragile kids of the wide range of experiences they need to become strong, we are systematically preventing their growth. We should let go—and let them grow.
32. Why does the author mention the immune system in Paragraph 2?
A. To stress its importance.
B. To analyze the cause of anxiety.
C. To question the latest discovery.
D. To help understand a new word.
33. Parents overprotect children because______.
A. they are concerned about their children's safety
B. they want to keep children from being teased
C. parent-monitored activities are a must
D. children are not independent enough
34. According to the author, free play can_____.
A. promote children's resilience
B. strengthen children's friendship
C. reduce children's risky behavior
D. develop children's leadership skills
35. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. Stop trying to perfect your child.
B. It takes great courage to raise children.
C. Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child.
D. While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about.

You might take a car, a bus, or a bike to school. But in Bangladesh, instead of waiting for a school bus to come down their street, many students wait for a school boat to come down the river. That's right—these students attend school on a boat!
Bangladesh is very close to sea level. _____36_____The flooding creates many problems. For the nearly 160 million people living there the periodic flooding means that they are often unable to access roads, electricity, or telephones.

In 2002, Rezwan began transforming boats into schools. Each boat was built to house between 30 and 35 students. The boats had everything you might find in a regular classroom. The only difference was that they floated on a river.
______38______Today Rezwan and his organization operate 88 boats in northern Bangladesh. About half the boats are used as schools, and the other half are used as temporary houses during the flood season. In addition to the schools and the temporary housing, there are also a floating technology and training center, a library that allows students to check out books, and a health-care center. The school boats travel along the rivers and pick up students for classes that include computer technology, agriculture, and human rights.
At night the boats provide additional learning opportunities for students and adults. ___39___They study using solar lamps that are charged during the day at stations near the river. Special equipment on the boats also projects lessons onto big screens made from sailcloth. People can come down to the river bank to watch films. In all, these boats help educate close to 90,000 families in Bangladesh.
By floating down the rivers, the school boats provide more than books. _____40_____"'This ‘library’ boat inspired me," said 18-year- old student Shanto Islam, who enjoys reading science fiction books. “I started to dream.”Islam now wants to attend a university.
A. They also deliver knowledge, opportunity, and hope to all generations.
