Researchers in Hungary have confirmed something many dog owners have long suspected: that canines understand our feelings.
Using a Magnetic Resonance Scanner, or MRI, scientists found that when it comes to emotions, dogs’brains are similar to those of humans. Dogs are usually not relaxed in a lab environment, but with a little petting and lots of treats they can be trained to sit still even in an MRI scanner. That’s how researchers in Hungary’s ELTE University were able to get images of their brains at work.
Research fellow Attila Andics says it helped them better understand the dogs’relationship with humans.“We have known for a long time that dogs and humans share similar social environment, but now our results show that dogs and humans also have similar brain mechanisms(大脑机制)to process social information,”said Andics.
After training 11 dogs to stay motionless while their brains were scanned, the researchers checked their neurological(神经系统的)responses to about 200 emotionally significant sounds, from
whining and crying to playful barking and laughing. They then compared the responses from human subjects. They found striking similarities.
Andics says it opens new possibilities for research.“It establishes a foundation of a new branch of comparative neuroscience, because until now it was not possible to measure the brain activities of a nonprimate(非人灵长类动物)and the primate brain in a single experiment,”said Andics.
And what that tells ordinary dog owners, the Hungarian scientists say, is to treat your canine companions as friends, not mere animals, because they evidently understand human feelings.

(2016·沭阳五校联考)If your idea of a good time is to sleep in a hut, carry your own rubbish, and eat insects and wild animals, then ecotourism may be just for you. But is it also for people who
want to fly over a rainforest sky before checking into a comfortable and expensive hotel in the middle of a national park? Whatever ecotourism is, it is hot—perhaps too hot for its own good.
The World Tourism Organization claims that the industry looked after 592 million travelers last year who spent $423 billion, and of all the types of tourism, ecotourism seems to be the fastest growing. By the broadest measure—a trip with some sort of nature or wilderness element—ecotourism already accounts for perhaps a third of these travelers. On a stricter definition favored by the Ecotourism Society, it is“responsible travel that preserves natural environments and keeps up the wellbeing of local people”,which accounts for no more than 5% of tourism.
Ideally, ecotourism helps both people and nature. Before the disastrous civil war, Rwanda’s Mountain Gorilla Project was one such model. Visits to the gorillas were limited, local guides ensured good behavior or on the part of the humans, and the high admission charge—$170 a day—paid for salaries and presentation of the gorillas’ living areas. As this made the gorillas worth more alive than dead, poaching(偷猎) decreased. As another example, Preservation Corporation, Africa’s largest ecotour operator, uses only local labor, buys products from local farmers, and supports building projects:such as clinics and schools. This contribution to social advance is also good business sense. Projects from which local people benefit directly are less likely to be affected by poaching and theft.
Ecotourism’s biggest problem is labeling. Going on an ecotour is no guarantee of good ecology. So far, only Australia has an official system to grade tour operators and tourist attractions on the basis of their “greenness”. Another issue is how ecotourists damage the environment. Dolphin-feeding, for instance, is innocent and enjoyable, but after too many free meals, the dolphins forget how to catch their own dinners.
Keeping prices high is one way to limit enthusiasm. But measuring the effect of ecotourism on human environments is trickier. It is common for villagers to see ecotourism as a source of new income. Hence, the very tourists who venture in search of traditional cultures end up breaking them up. As ecotourism becomes more popular, it will finally threaten the very things that are good for business.
41.According to the passage, ecotourism may ________.
A.harm its own purpose by becoming too popular
B.save the environment by becoming more popular
C.harm its own purpose by becoming less popular
D.save the environment by becoming less popular
A解析:细节理解题. 根据第一段最后一句话“Whatever ecotourism is, it is hot—perhaps too hot for its own good.”及文章最后一句话可知选A.
42.Within the tourism industry as a whole, ecotourism ________.
A.has no single, clear definition that would satisfy everybody
B.has expanded less rapidly than other types of tourism
C.claims that no comfortable hotels should be used by tourists
D.most often has a negative effect on local culture
A解析:推理判断题. 根据第一段和第二段的内容可知“生态旅游没有单一的明确的让每个人都满意的定义”.
43.Rwanda’s Mountain Gorilla Project is a good example because ________.
A.tourists were free to visit the gorillas whenever they wanted to
B.local people’s attitudes toward animals were not affected
C.the gorillas were protected from both tourists and local people
D.the gorillas’living area was modernized because of the high admission
C解析:细节理解题. 根据第三段中“Visits to the gorillas were limited, local guides ensured good behavior or on the part of the humans, and the high admission charge—$170 a day—paid for salaries and presentation of the gorillas’living areas. As this made the gorillas worth more alive than dead, poaching(偷猎) decreased.”可知Rwanda’s Mountain Gorilla Project使游客和当地人都来保护大猩猩.
44.________ most directly benefits the local community.
A.Rwanda’s Mountain Gorilla Project
B.Preservation Corporation
C.Australia’s grading system
D.Dolphinfeeding
B解析:细节理解题. 根据第三段中的“As another example, Preservation Corporation, Africa’s largest ecotour operator, uses only local labor, buys products from local farmers, and supports building projects:such as clinics and schools. This contribution to social advance is also good business sense. Projects from which local people benefit directly are less likely to be affected by poaching and theft.”可知,Preservation Corporation使当地人们直接受益.

(2016·浙江温州适应测试)You could feel sorry for Alberto Torres, who is blind. The last thing he remembers seeing was his daughter being born 13 years ago. Then the world went blank; he can only imagine what his only child looks like now, as a teenaged honor student. Bad luck is no stranger to this warm and thoughtful 37yearold man. His mother died of cancer when he was 4, and his father, who was often ill, had to give him up to the care of the state when he was 11. He later
worked for 19 years in a workshop making household goods, deathly boring work.Earlier this month, Alberto Torres’s wife, who had just been laid off from her job, had to have a breast removed due to cancer and now faces a year of radiation treatments. Things seemed always to go from almost incredibly bad to worse. Even Mr. Torres’s good luck has a dark side: Five years ago, his lovely guide dog pulled him out of the path of a truck. Mr. Torres was not hurt. The dog was killed.
But Mr.Torres does not feel sorry for himself.“These are just little bumps you have to go over in your life, ”he said. At 5 a.m.on a recent morning, we caught up with Mr. Torres at a subway stop in Brooklyn, New York, near where he lives in a thirdfloor apartment (with no elevator). He ad been up since 3 a.m., feeding his new dog, making coffee, getting ready.“When you’re blind, it takes a little longer to do things, ”he said.
Mr.Torres was beginning his twohour trip to his job developing film in the X-ray department of the emergency room of the Bronx hospital. He would take the G train to Queens Plaza station to the R train, heading towards Manhattan. He would then ride the R train to 59th Street where he would walk upstairs to switch to the Number 6 train. At one point along the journey, he might chat with a stranger. At another, someone would pat his dog, calling him by name. People offered assistance, even seats. At 125th Street, Mr. Torres would transfer to the Number 4 train by crossing the platform. At 149th Street, he would go down to the Number 2. He would take that to East 180th Street where he nearly always has a long wait for his final train, to Pelham Parkway. Then he and his dog would walk 20 minutes to the hospital.
It was a hard job to come by. Before he got the job, Mr. Torres was determined to escape the workshop run by an organization dedicated to help people who can’t see. He wanted a job developing Xray film, something that everyone must do in the dark. He had to handle the long trip, as well as the work. “Our philosophy here is that blind people can do just about anything except drive buses, ”it was the thinking about disabled people at the Bronx hospital. “We find what a person can do rather than what he can’t do, ”said the hospita l’s director.
One day a while ago marked the first anniversary of Mr. Torres’s hiring. He developed 150 or so Xrays, his usual output, to celebrate. Mr.Torres works by himself in a small, dark room that smells of chemicals. He cannot wear gloves, because he needs to feel. It is hard work, related to emergency of lives. His immediate supervisor says he trusts him 100%.Mr.Torres makes $20, 000 a year. But his motivation goes beyond money.“If I start feeling like a victim, that makes me bitter. And why be bitter? That makes you go i nto a hole and stay there.”he said.“I’m not doing anything out of the ordinary, ”insisted Mr. Torres as he quickly completed the task.

Woodkopf is a crazy new sport invented in the Czech Republic(捷克共和国) and it has been gaining quite a lot of national media attention. This popular sport involves a pair of opponents wearing two-meter wooden boards on their heads and trying to knock the other’s board down without dropping their own. Strange as it sounds, a rousing match of Woodkopf can be quite exciting to watch.
This crazy sport can be traced back to July, 1992, when it was practiced during a cultural festival of art school graduates in Prague. Woodkopf, which literally translates as“wooden head”,is popular partly due to the fact that the game is simple, inexpensive and requires no complex equipment, but also because it never fails to supply a good dose of humor.
It is played by both men or women of all ages, and the rules are pretty simple. Both opponents must wear long and thin wooden boards of 200×16×2cm, weighing between 3 and 4kg. Once the boards are in position, the opponents try to knock each other’s boards off, using only planktoplank(木板) touches. No body-to-body or plank-to-body touches are allowed. The player who manages to knock down the opponent’s board twice in a row is declared the winner.
According to members of the Woodkopf Union, the best players are generally the taller ones. A bald head is also of great advantage, as pointed out by union chief Ivan Rezac.
Veteran Woodkopf players are now struggling for the sport to be included in the Olympic Games. They strongly believe that it has a great future. Vladimir Cech, who has been playing for the past seven years, said, “We want it to become our national sport, and a part of Czech culture along with beer, pork, dumplings and cabbage.”

One possible version:
Recently many universities have used beautiful girls or handsome boys to make advertisements to attract new students. Different people have different attitudes towards it. Some are for it while others are against it.
While using the school beauty and a handsome boy in ads is an effective way to catch our eye, I don’t think it is an appropriate way for the university to attract new students. For one thing, senior school students won’t choose the university just because there is a beautiful girl or handsome boy on campus. For another, it may mislead the value of us students, causing some of us to pay too much attention to people’s outer appearance rather than their inner beauty.
As for me, I will choose my ideal university based on its teaching staff, school culture and space for independent thought and creativity instead of the so called “c ampus goddess”.
A good friend has a lifelong positive influence on us. Therefore, I hope to make acquaintance of those who are learned, broadminded and helpful in university.。
