FlorenceNightingale
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence,Italy, while her wealthy English parents were travelling in Europe. As a child, she travelled to many places with her family and learnt how to speak several languages.
When Nightingale was 17,she told her family that she was going to help sick people. Her parents did not approve, but Nightingale was determined.
She travelled to hospitals all over Europe. She saw that doctors were working too hard. She saw that patients died because they did not get enough care.Nightingale felt that women could be doing more to help doctors take care of sick people.
Nightingale knew that in order for nurses to do more, they needed special training in how to take care of sick people.Nightingale went to a hospital in Germany to study nursing. Then she returned to London and became the head of a group of women called Gentlewomen During Illness. These women cared for sick people in their homes.
In 1854,England was fighting a war with Russia. No reporters wrote about the terrible conditions in the hospitals that cared for the wounded.People demanded that something be done about it.A leader of the government asked Florence Nightingale to take some nurses into the war hospitals. So,in November 1854,Nightingale finally got to work in a hospital.
She took along 38 nurses whom she had trained herself.
At first, the doctors on the battlefields did not want Nightingale and her nurses in their hospitals. They did not believe that women could help. But in fact, the nurses did make a difference. They worked around the clock, tending the sick. Thanks to their hard work, many wounded soldiers survived.

Claudia’s mum first saw the advertisement in a newspaper. The advertisement told of an AmeriCorps-sponsored workshop to train 100 teenagers in leadership skills and community service.Claudia sent in her application and was one of the teenagers chosen to go to FortDevens,Massachusetts,in the summer when she was 16.
During the leadership training,Claudia worked with a team of 10 kids.Together they surveyed, planned, and set up a meeting for
minority business owners to find out how crime and safety affected them. After surveying more than 150 people,Claudia and her friends provided information to businesses about alarm systems and other safety measures.

“That’s when it hit me,” Claudia remembers.“I had really developed my leadership skills and a desire to serve by helping those small businesses. So I went to a teacher at Framingham High School and made a proposal for an after-school programme for those children living in the low-income housing project.” Claudia
received lots of support from about 20 other teens in a service club at the high school.
The project wasn’t easy.First,Claudia struggled to find a place to house the programme. The Framingham Housing Authority finally agreed to donate a facility next door to the day-care centre.Claudia immediately organised her friends to collect donations of crayons, paper, scissors, and supplies from teachers and day-care centres. Then she made a flyer (传单) and distributed it around the housing project.

feeling rather tired. No doubt you are looking forward to meeting the families you’re going to be staying with during the next month. Now,please listen carefully to the following arrangements as the various families are waiting in groups to meet you.
If your surname, your family name, begins with the letter A to F,your host family will be waiting for you in this hall.At the end of the meeting, you should wait behind in here. Now,for those of you whose names begin with G to L,you should go downstairs, not upstairs, but downstairs to the dining room. When you get there, make sure you go to the far end of the room by the drink machine. That’s important as people whose names begin with letters from M to R should also go downstairs and wait at the opposite end of the dining room near the doors into the garden. And the final group—those of you with names from S to Z,must go out of this hall, past the office to the parking area, where the bus stopped when you arrive. All right,go out to where the cars are parked by the main gate and your families will be waiting there.
