Door gods are a traditional part of Chinese culture, particularly during the Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year. They are depicted as fierce warriors or deities, and their images are pasted on either side of a households main entrance to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.
The origins of door gods can be traced back to ancient China, where they were believed to protect the home from misfortune and to welcome prosperity and happiness. The figures of door gods vary across different regions and periods, but they are typically depicted in vibrant colors and with imposing expressions.
One of the most famous door gods is Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong, who are said to have protected the Tang Dynasty emperor Taizong from evil spirits.Their images are often portrayed with fierce expressions, wielding weapons, and wearing armor.Another popular door god is Wei Zheng,a loyal minister who is depicted as a wise and just figure. In addition to the traditional door gods, there are also door gods for specific professions or social groups. For example, there are door gods for scholars, merchants, and farmers, each with their own unique attributes and blessings.
The process of pasting door gods involves a ritual of cleansing the door, applying a layer of rice paste, and carefully positioning the door god images. This is usually done on New Years Eve,and the images are left to protect the home throughout the year.
Today, door gods continue to be an important part of Chinese New Year celebrations. They not only serve as a form of protection but also as a symbol of cultural heritage and tradition. Many people take pride in preserving this custom, and it remains a cherished aspect of the festive season.。
