My name is Xiao Ming and I'm in the 5th grade. Today my teacher asked us to write about someone who inspires us. I chose Jack Ma, the famous Chinese businessman who created
Alibaba and became one of the richest people in China. Even though Jack Ma is a grown-up, I really look up to him. Here's why:
Jack Ma grew up pretty poor in Hangzhou. His family didn't have much money at all. But Jack worked really hard from a young age. When he was just 12 years old, he started waking up early to watch English lessons on TV and then go out and practice English with foreigners at a nearby hotel. Can you imagine doing that when you were 12? I can barely wake up for school in the mornings!
After failing his university entrance exams twice, Jack Ma finally got into Teacher's University where he studied English. He eventually became an English teacher, making just 12 per month. That's less than what my parents give me for my weekly allowance! Being a poor teacher couldn't have been easy.
In 1995, Jack Ma learned about the internet. At the time, hardly anyone in China knew what it was. Jack was so amazed that he searched for "beer" and couldn't find any Chinese companies listed. That's when the lightbulb went off in his head - the internet was going to be huge, and China needed to be a part of it.
So in 1999, using just 60,000 from friends and family, Jack Ma started his first internet company called Alibaba. It was just a small website to help Chinese companies buy and sell things online. Can you even imagine starting a whole company with only 60,000? I don't think I could do anything with that little bit of money besides buy some toys!
At first, Alibaba wasn't doing so well. In fact, Jack Ma tried and failed twice before with other internet companies. His friends all thought he was crazy and told him to quit. They made fun of him for leaving his job as an English teacher. But Jack never gave up on his dream of making Alibaba a success. He kept working harder and harder.
Slowly but surely, more and more companies in China started using Alibaba to buy and sell products online. By 2003, Alibaba had grown so big that Jack Ma took the company public, which is when a company first sells shares on the stock market. At the time, it was considered a huge achievement.
But Jack Ma was just getting started! Over the next 10-15 years, he continued growing Alibaba into the gigantic
e-commerce company it is today. Alibaba now has tons of different websites and apps for buying everything you can imagine. There's Taobao for consumer shopping, Tmall for
branded retailers, Alibaba Cloud for data services, and way more. Alibaba has over 500 million monthly users, which is more than the entire population of the United States!
What I think is most amazing is how Jack Ma was able to become such a massive success even though he was just a poor kid from Hangzhou. He never had any special connections or a rich family to help him out. He was even rejected from Harvard ten times after graduating from university! But that never stopped him. He worked harder than anyone and believed in himself when nobody else did.
Jack Ma is now worth over 40 billion dollars. That's enough money to buy literally billions of toys, video games, candy, you name it! But he's not just spending it all on himself. Jack Ma has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to schools and education programs in China and around the world. He believes that education and learning are the keys for poor kids to be able to achieve their dreams just like he did.

He has given jobs and opportunities to over 100,000 people at Alibaba.
