keep doing一直做,the number of …

在形式上,“the number of ”和“a number of”相差一点点,一个用定冠词the;另一个用不定冠词a.
“A number of”的意思是“若干”或“许多”,相当于some 或a lot of,和复数名词连用. 必要时,还可以加上形容词great,large,small,good 等.例如:
① A number of highly qualified scholars have worked in Singapore.
② A great number of junior college graduates opt for business administration courses.
③ There are a large number of teaching posts yet to be filled.
④ Only a small number of men want to be language teachers.
⑤ A good number of books in the market are examination-oriented.
“The number of”和“a number of”一样,跟在后头的名词也是复数的,不同的是这里的主语是单数的the number,不是它后面的复数名词,谓语动词必须和the number 呼应,如:
⑥ The number of undergraduates has increased over the years.
⑦ The number of new houses is unable to cope with the ever-growing population.
⑧ The number of college graduates in a country reflects its cultural standard.
⑨ The work of lab technicians is dull but important.
⑩ The development of a language centre invariably involves long-term planning, adequate human resources, and up-to-date facilities.
11.The organisation of large-scale musical concerts calls for much time and energy.
12.The number of foreign workers keep on increasing.
13.The number of classrooms, offices, and teaching facilities are far from being sufficient.
14.The streaming of students in Singapore and Japan differ.
15.The cause of student mobs in some countries are related to governments'
dictatorship,corruption and ill-treatment of undergraduates.
16.The rapid opening up of China's economy in recent years have prompted our businessmen to venture into the Chinese market.
12-16里的谓语动词全部要变成单数才对:keeps; is; differs; is related to; has prompted
14. ___________ is well known that great changes have taken place in China recently.
A. That
B. As
C. Which
D. It

20. Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power.”
Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you
keep a journal of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success.
Wan t to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem—why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there.
Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.

“He’s blind,” she said. “The doctor told me today.”I looked at Joe. He was laughing. “He can’t be blind,” I said. “He smiles at my face.”“He smiles at your voice,” she said. “He’ll never see your face.” That was that. Joe was blind. Mama went back to cooking. I went back to playing a dog.
From the age of 8, Joe boarded at a school for the deaf and the blind, learning to read Braille. When he was 16, the school said he’d learned enough and sent him home with a Braille typewriter. At 21, Joe moved out to live on his own, he said, “like a man,” in an apartment 30 miles (48 km) away. He learned to cook, clean, do his own laundry, and do almost anything else he needed.
The n he met the love of his life. She, too, was blind. Painfully soon after, he also lost our mother, who was his champion, and our stepfather, who w as Joe’s best friend.
What is left when you lose the loves of your life? My brother clung with an iron fist (拳头) to three gifts: Faith, hope and love.
His faith grew stronger. He always had hope. And his love for his family has never gotten weaker, despite death or disappointment. Loved ones leave, but love remains.
The years ahead may prove to be his hardest. His legs are growing weaker, threatening to take away the independence he’s fought so hard to keep. My sister and I often wonder what will happen if Joe can’t live on his own. It’s not up to us. We’ll do what we can, but it’s his life. He won’t have it any other way.
