Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber. He climbed many high mountains in the world. Starting in 2015, he and his friends spent two years on an adventure (探险) in South America. In 2018, a famous geography magazine even named him Adventure of the Year.
Although Jerry achieved great success, he didn’t feel satisfied. He asked himself, “Is it enough to climb the highest mountains? Am I doing something helpful? How can I change my adventures into something that can help the world?”
Jerry learned that scientists need plants, rocks and water samples (样本) from the places far away to do research. But scientists can’t get there themselves because such places are hard to reach—only the bravest adventurers can make it. Jerry thought he could do something to help. He then came up with an idea. He organized a team of top adventurers to collect samples for scientists. By studying the samples, scientists could know more about the earth and find ways to protect it.
Recently Jerry and his adventurer friends have discovered a special plant life of Mount Qomolangma. The samples they brought back have helped scientists study how plants live in extreme (极端的) condition.
For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures had made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me. What matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still much more we can do,” Jerry said to a newspaper.

My dear boys and girls, good morning. Today I’m going to talk to you about my suggestions about how to become stronger.
As the high school entrance examination is coming soon, you might feel a bit worried or nervous. These feelings may make you stressed out and fail to focus on your studies. But think about it. Would your favorite superhero have these same feelings?
Scientists have been studying what they call the “Spider-Man Effect” (蜘蛛侠效应) in children. They’ve found that if kids imagine themselves as a powerful person—such as a super hero like Spider-Man, they won’t feel so nervous and will be able to focus on their work.
For example, if you feel nervous during an exam, try to imagine that you are a Spider-Man. You may find that you can “remove” the stress from this situation and feel more confident. This can help keep you fight off bad feelings and focus on your task, just like a superhero would. Pretending to be a superhero makes us feel powerful and that will have an influence on how we act in real life.
But you don’t have to always choose a superhero like Spider-man. Anyone you admire can encourage you to get through hard times, or remind you of how you should act in certain situations. Favorite stars, famous painters, even our own parents—anyone can be our “Spider-Man”. For example, when it comes to how I communicate with others, I like to look toward my mom for inspiration. She is a middle school teacher who is always kind, thoughtful and brave. I try to act the same way like her.
Thanks for your listening. I hope you can find your own strength to deal with the difficulties in your life.

IX.任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,按要求完成1—5题。

Do you wonder what your work environment will be in 10 years? Imagine you walk into your office, with the temperature just right. You sit down and begin a nice day. This is the kind of smart office that engineers are trying to make. It uses technology to help workers perform at their best while at work.
Sitting in front of a desk for too long can be bad for your health. For example, it can cause back and waist (腰)
pain. Sanon, a company in Zhejiang, built UP7 to help solve this. As a smart lifting desk, UP7 can tell how long a user has been sitting in the chair. When it reaches the time set by the user, it will “tell” the user to stop working by either shaking the table or sending messages to the user’s phone.
The company also designed a type of smart chair to match with the table. “The chair is so comfortable. It can adjust the arms and height according to your body shape,” a user in Zhejiang posted on platforms. In smart offices, you probably won’t use paper notebooks. Instead, you can try electronic paper books to put every work document online. N10, created by Hanvon Technology in Beijing, is a new “notebook” like this. It uses a screen that doesn’t produce much light. Users write on it with an electronic pen.
“It truly feels like reading and writing on real paper, completely meeting my office needs,” a user Mr. Lin said to People’s Daily. “Notes recorded can be easily organized, searched and stored. You usually need several paper notebooks to do what the electronic notebook does.”
Are you looking forward to working in such a comfortable and friendly work environment in the future?
