一、中考英语阅读理解汇编
1.阅读理解
Stand Straight and Stand Tall!
High school was wonderful, but I had always felt uncomfortable as one of the taller members of my class, standing a head above the other girls and bowing at the back of the line to avoid sticking out.
I especially hated being around large groups of people, like during the social hour after the church services.
My grandfather watched me grow increasingly uncomfortable, but he didn't laugh at me or try to comfort me. Instead, he would warn me. "Stand straight and stand tall, " he would say, as I tried to shrink(退缩).
And each time, I would obey him. Even at age 15, I understood that his advice was about more than just feet and inches. My grandfather grew up in war-torn(饱受战争摧残的)Europe. When German soldiers took his hometown, the beautiful and exciting city of Tarnow, Poland, he joined the Soviet army for his country's freedom. "Stand straight, stand tall" meant something else since then. I trusted my grandfather more than anyone else in my childhood. And whenever I was afraid of something, he would tell me stories of his life.
After the war, he took a boat for America on January 27, 1947. All alone in a new country, he was frightened about his future. Soon he met other European immigrants(移民), each of whom tried to find his or her own way.
If they could do it, why couldn't he? "Stand straight, stand tall," he would tell himself. At first my grandfather refused to enter an American church. He was angry with God for the loss of his whole family in Europe. But soon he felt his self-confidence returning. When he walked into the church the first time, he walked in proudly.

Except for a few times, Americans are not big present-givers. There's no exchange of presents among business people, and if one American tries to give another a present, it may look like that he wants to bribe(贿赂) him. Americans have learned that in some other countries people like to give presents to others, but among ourselves we don't see the need for presents.
Even friends may never exchange presents. When I go to foreign countries, I try to bring back little things for close friends, but nobody would feel unhappy if I didn't. I don't often remember a friend's birthday, and few people outside of my family remember mine. If someone gave me presents too often, I'd get unpleasant. But a present from a foreigner-that kind from his or her homeland-won't go wrong, except to government employees(政府职员) who can't be given presents.
You usually open a present at once and in front of the person who gives it except Christmas and birthday presents. You sho uld only say, "It's so nice. Thanks…" when you get Christmas or birthday presents.
You may want to bring a bottle of wine(葡萄酒) or flowers to a dinner party, but you're never asked to. Nobody will mind if you bring wine, but your friend may not use it that evening.
At Christmas we often give presents to our family and sometimes our friends. We also give presents to people who have been helpful during the year—doormen, babysitters, housecleaners, newspaper senders—anyone who has often helped us.

The main difference between China and Western countries on the dinner table is chopsticks instead of a knife and fork, but that's just a small difference. Besides, in decent(像样的)restaurants, you can always ask for a knife and fork, if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough. The real difference is that in the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated to a formal(正式的)dinner and particularly if the host thinks you're in the country for the first time, he will do his best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes. The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, followed by the main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes. Soup will then be served (unless it is a Guangdong-style restaurant), followed by rice, noodles or dumplings. Perhaps one of the things that surprise a Western visitor most is that some of the Chinese hosts like to put food onto their guests' plates. In formal dinners, there are always "public" chopsticks and spoons for this purpose, but some hosts may use their own chopsticks. This is a sign of real friendship and politeness. It is always polite to eat the food. If you do not eat it, just leave the food on the plate. People in China tend to over-order food, for they will find it embarrassing(令人尴尬的) if all the food is consumed(吃光). When you have had enough, just say so, or you will always overeat!
(1)What's the real difference between Chinese and Western table manners?
A. The tools people use to eat.
B. Whether people share food on the same plate.
C. The things people like to eat.
D. How to begin the dinner politely.
(2)If a foreigner first comes to have dinner in a Chinese family, he may be _____.
A. given little food
B. served with rice first
C. served with many dishes

Greenland is the largest island in the world. It's in the northeast of North America. Near Greenland is another island. It's small. Its name is Iceland. Do you think that Greenland is green and warm?Do you think that Iceland is white with ice?If you do,you're wrong. That is because most of Greenland is covered with lots of ice. The ice is higher than the world's tallest building. There are more people in your hometown than in all of Greenland. What about Iceland?Iceland has ice,but not so much ice as Greenland.
