Scientists study the natural world by using the "scientific method".When a scientist observes some phenomenon (现象)in nature he develops an idea, called a theory or hypothesis(假设).Then he does an experiment to test his hypothesis. If the results are as expected, then the experiment confirms the hypothesis. If the experiment fails and the results are not as expected, then the experiment disproves the hypothesis and the scientist must come up with a new theory to test.
In ancient times great thinkers came up with complex theories to explain nature, but did not always prove them by experiment. For example, the great Greek thinker Aristotle, for centuries, had a theory that heavy objects would fall faster than light objects until the scientist Galileo performed an experiment and found it had been wrong. Here's an experiment that you can use to prove or disprove a common-sense theory:
STEP 1:Obtain an empty bottle with a small neck.A diameter of 1/2 inch should be perfect.
STEP 2 :Cut a sheet of notebook paper to a square five inches on each side.
STEP 3 :Crumple(揉皱)the paper into a tight wad (团).
STEP 4 :Lay the bottle on its side and place the paper so it lies loosely(松松地)in the neck of the bottle.Construct a theory about what will happen if you blow hard towards it.A common-sense theory might be that the wad would be blown into the bottle. Now conduct your experiment to see what really happens.
If your theory is that the wad would be blown into the bottle, your experiment probably will give you unexpected results. In most cases the wad is blown out of the neck of the bottle in the opposite direction.A new theory might be that wind rushing into the bottle creates a whirlwind(旋风)of air currents(气流)in the closed space pushing the wad out.

‘Tribes' everywhere have their own special language As someone who's been studying English for many years now,you might think you know the English language pretty well. But if you overheard a British person say,"A Billy left some bees and honey in my sherbet(冰冻果露)last night," would you understand what they meant?Probably not,but many native speakers may not know what this person was saying either.his or her tribe. In plain English, the sentence would be," A customer left some money in my cab last night."
So,what exactly is meant by "tribe"?
A recent article on the BBC Culture website pointed out that nearly all of us are a part of a tribe. This is a group that defines(定义)who we are and even how we speak. And with each tribe comes its own "secret language",as the BBC called it.
If you work in a certain industry---education,for example---you may use slang toords(俚语)and acronyms(首字母缩略词)that only other people who work in that industry would understand.Or if you live in a certain city, you might use a slang word to describe a landmark in the city, that only locals would understand.
These so-called secret languages each have their own fascinating history. In the US,for example, the underground "ballroom"(舞厅)tribe of 1970s and 80s New York City and its language were showcased(展现)in the 2018 FX show Pose.
These secret words don't always stay within their tribes, however.Words from many tribes, especially musical cultures such as rap and hip-hop,often enter people's everyday vocabulary. For example, the phrase "to have beef"--- meaning " to be in a conflict"---was made popular by US rappers.Today,it's widely used by native English speakers all over the world.
As BBC reporter Susie Dent wrote," We are all surrounded by amazing secret languages, full of history and stories and in-jokes(内部笑话).And one thing is certain:our tribal conversations
will never run out."
25.The example at the beginning of the text is mainly used to ______ .
A. prove that English is hard to learn
B. explain the meaning of tribes
C. teach readers how to communicate with London cab drivers
D. show how the languages of tribes are often difficult for outsiders to understand
26.What can we know about secret languages?______
A. They mostly came from musical cultures.
B. Some words from them are popular in everyday conversation.
C. They first started in New York City in the 1980s.
D. They have failed to become popular among young people.
27.What is Dent's attitude toward the future of secret languages?______
A. Confident.
B. Worried.
C. Uninterested.
D. Objective(客观的).

Decodeing(解码)nighttime sleeping patterns
When we wake up feeling sleepy and with dark circles under eyes, many of us often think:" I'm going to go to bed earlier tomorrow !" But however determined we are, chances are that we don't stick to our promise.
This behavior is called "bedtime procrastination(拖延症)" and results from lack of self-control and our body clock, reported HuffPost.
According to a study carried out by a group of health psychologists at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 2014,bedtime procrastination is a common problem. In their study,53 percent of the 2,400 participants said they didn't follow their sleep schedule, delaying it at least twice a week.
It's found that they delayed bedtime not because they liked to stay up late, but they couldn't stop doing other trivial (琐碎的)things, which were keeping them up in the first place.
"People who generally have trouble resisting temptations(诱惑)and adhering(坚持)to their intentions are also more likely to delay going to bed," Floor Kroese,a psychologist at Utrecht University, further explained to HuffPost.
Yet,according to scientists, lack of self-control is not the only thing to blame. Our body clock also plays an important role when it comes to bedtime.
In order to check the influence of the body clock on sleep, psychologists at Ulm University in Germany studied the sleep patterns of 108 people in February. It was found that those who get up late are more likely to postpone their bedtime than those who wake early every morning.
And more surprisingly, night owls would go to bed late at the very beginning of the weekday, even though they had to get up early for work and school. It's their special body clock that plays a part in delaying their bedtime, reported Popular Science.
"The intention to go to bed earlier is not enough," Jana Kuhnel,a psychologist at Ulm University, concluded in Popular Science."Biological processes need to support this intention." People always think that bedtime procrastination isn't a big problem, but as Kroese told
Popular Science,"the choices we make that affect our sleep could turn out to be pretty important for our health."
28.What did the study by Utrecht University find?______
A. Most people go to bed late because they like to stay up.
B. 53% of the participants delay their bedtime on weekends.
C. The lack of self-control is one reason for bedtime procrastination.
D. Bedtime procrastination is particularly common among the Dutch.
29.According to the second to last paragraph,Jana Kuhnel stresses the importance of ______ .
A. enough sleep
B. the body clock
C. self-control
D. good sleeping habits
30.What does Kroese think of bedtime procrastination?______
A. It is not a big problem in our daily life.
B. It has great influence on our health.
C. It depends on our lifestyle.
D. It causes people to have wrong thinking.
