At first, the earth’s surface〔外表〕 layer (层) was made up of huge blocks of hard, solid rocks. Then slowly, the rocks broke up into smaller and smaller pieces. Finally stones, pebbles (卵石) and grains of sand were formed. Many sorts of plants and animals lived and died on the surface of the earth. Their remains mixed up with the stones, pebbles and formed soil. The outmost layer of the earth is soil.
There are many ways in which large pieces of rock break into smaller ones. Wind, water. heat and cold help to break up rocks. When winds blow grains of sand against a large rock for a long time, the softer layers of the rock are slowly worn away. These leave holes and cracks (裂缝) in the rock, which become bigger and finally the rock breaks up into smaller pieces.
The moving water of streams and rivers also helps to break up rocks. As the water moves along, it carries with it small pieces of rock. These rub the larger ones. Thus, the larger rocks are worn down to smaller pieces.
shines, the rocks become very hot. If these rocks are suddenly cooled, they may crack. Ice also plays a part in making soil. Water in the carcks can turn into ice in cold weather. As this happens, it becomes bigger and the cracks become wider, and finally break into smaller pieces.

The garden city was largely the invention of Ebenezer Howard (1850 –1928). After immigrating from England to the USA, and an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as a farmer, he moved to Chicago, where he saw the reconstruction of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871. In those days, it was nicknamed "the Garden City", almost certainly the source of Howard's name for his later building plan of towns.Returning to London, Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s, drawing on ideas that were popular at the time, but creating a unique combination of designs. The nineteenth-century poor city was in many ways a terrible place, dirty and crowded; but it offered economic and social opportunities. At the same time, the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive: though it promised fresh air and nature, it suffered from agricultural depression〔萧条〕and it offered neither enough work and wages, nor much social life.Howard's idea was to combine the best of town and country in a new kind of settlement, the garden city.Howard's idea was that a group of people should set up a company, borrowing money to establish
a garden city in the depressed countryside; far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.Garden cities would provide a central public open space, radial avenues and connecting industries. They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt, also owned by the company, containing not merely farms but also some industrial institutions. As more and more people moved in, the garden city would reach its planned limit-Howard suggested 32,000 people; then, another would be started a short distance away. Thus, over time, there would develop a vast planned house collection, extending almost without limit; within it, each garden city would offer a wide rang of jobs and services, but each would also be connected to the others by a rapid transportation system, thus giving all the economic and social opportunities of a big city.
44.How did Howard get the name for his building plan of garden cities? A.By using the nickname of the reconstructed Chicago.
B.Through his observation of the country life.
C.Through the combination of different ideas.
D.By taking other people's advice.

46.What can we learn about garden cities from the last paragraph?
A.Each one would continue to become larger
B.People would live and work in the same place
C.Their number would continue to rise
D.Each one would contain a certain type of business

The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now
it is an ecological (生态的) disaster area. Nauru’s heartbreaking story
could have one good consequence—other countries might learn from its
mistakes.
For thousands of years, Polynesian people lived on the remote island
of Nauru, far from western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798. He was the British captain of the Hunter, a whaling ship. He called the island Pleasant Island.
However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. The whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and alcohol. These elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island. A ten-year civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900.
Nauru’s real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate (磷酸盐) on the island. In fact, it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which is a very important fertilizer (肥料) for farming. The company began mining the phosphate.
A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip mine (露天矿). When a company strip-mines, it moves the top layer of soil. Then it takes away the material it wants. Strip mining totally destroys the land. Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon.
In 1968, Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world. Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate.
Unfortunately, the leaders invested () the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses (费用). Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem—their phosphate was running out. Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing. By 2000, Nauru was financially (财政上) ruined. Experts say that it would take about $433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. This will probably never happen.
48. What might be the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To seek help for Nauru’s problems.
B. To give a warning to other countries.
C. To show the importance of money.
D. To tell a heartbreaking story of a war.
49. What was Nauru like before the Europeans came?
A. Rich and powerful.
B. Modern and open.
C. Peaceful and attractive.
D. Greedy and aggressive.
50. The ecological disaster in Nauru resulted from _______.
A. soil pollution
B. phosphate overmining
C. farming activity
D. whale hunting
Many parents know how frustrating(令人沮丧的) it can be to have a kid who is a picky eater. ___51___ A kid should never be forced to eat a specific food. As long as growth and weight gain are normal, there’s usually no reason to worry about a fussy(难以取悦的) kid. If you have problems with feeding kids, try the following tips.
●Never force-feed your kid.
If your little one turns his head from the spoon, he’s telling you clearly he’s had enough.
● Make a few simple healthy dishes.
___52___ Just say “Oh well, maybe you’ll like them next time.〞Keep trying gently. Some kids may need to try a food eight, ten, even fifteen times before they enjoy it. Therefore, be patient.
●___53___
Most kids have food preferences. Some enjoy wet foods, others may prefer finger foods. Some may want to try mini-meals, while others may favor liquids over solids for a time.●Be a good role model by reducing distractions(分心).
___574___ Turn off the TV, remove toys and books, and help your little one focus on one thing: eating.
●Keep meals enjoyable.
Don’t turn eating into an issue or be too strict about table manners. Let your kid touch and enjoy his food. ___55___ Your kid is the same. Although your picky eater is likely to make a mess waving around the mealtime spoon, letting him take control is important to a child’s growth and development.
On the whole, it’s your job to feed your kid, but it’s your kid’s responsibility to decide what and how much to eat.
A.Allow kids to choose one or two items they like on the menu.

please you.

After shopping, Mother and I went to a restaurant for lunch. I notice Mother looking at a nearby
table take by an old woman and young couple. They ate silently, and it was clearly that things were not
going well. As we left, Mother stopped on their table. “Excuse me,〞she said, put her arm around the
unhappy old woman. “You remind me so many of my mother. May I hug(拥抱) you?〞 The woman
smiled happily as she accepted to it. After we left, I said, “That was very nice of you, Mother. So I
didn’t think she looked like Grandma.〞“Neither did me,〞 said Mother cheerfully.

30.【答案】Dear Sir,
I' m writing to talk about the problems of food safety nowadays. In order to reduce the cost and make more profits, some food companies don’t take necessary safety measures to guarantee the food quality. As a result, more and more low-quality food flows into the market, doing a lot of harm to consumers' health.
In my opinion, food is essential to human beings. We can not live without proper food. If no notice were taken of food safety, the health of the whole nation would suffer. So I call on the whole society to take action and put an end to the low-quality food. Only in this way can we live a healthier life.
Yours truly,
Li Hua。
