Hi guys! I’m Lucy the Ladybird and while I’m very much of a lady, I’m not actually a bird but a glowing red beetle(甲虫) with decorative black spots.
I’m a friendly little bug, to be honest, and simply like to be close with my pals as long as they handle me very gently. I don’t bite humans but I do sink my teeth into mean beasts like aphids (蚜虫) which, unlike me, are very harmful to all the plants. I milk the aphids just like people do with cows and I milk them dry of all the sap (汁) they have got from your poor plants. I’m a real gardeners’ friend and love helping out around the place by pollinating flowers, tidying up plants’ fallen leaves and helping to turn them into nice rich fertilizer to feed everything both above and below the soil, and naturally, being so attractive to look at, we are perfect living garden decorations.
One thing I can not tolerate is all that poisonous pollution from vehicles, garbage burning and other un-environmentally friendly acts that occur in the cities every single minute of the day and night. Pollution of any kind really chokes me to death, so these days, I only live in clean countryside areas, particularly cool ones where it rains and everything grows fresh and green from spring right through to autumn. In winter, when the weather is too cold for me to bear, then I find a nice place to sleep until the snow has gone and I can come back out to play.
Oh! I almost forgot to tell you that although I am not a bird I do have wings and can fly for short distances. So if you pick me up and let me run up and down your hands and arms, then please don’t frighten me by screaming if I suddenly secede to take off!

B. ladybirds are the most honest living things in the garden

23. What do we know about the ladybird?

D. It can fly a long distance.
24. How many aspects about the ladybirds are talked about in the passage?
a. its appearance
b. its influence on plants

No rows of desks in this classroom, and no teacher lecturing at the front. In fact, that’s something Barrie teacher Liz Collett rarely does. Instead, she’s on the move, talking to students about their work, from the small group sitting on the floor playing games to others nearby figuring out a math problem.
The children in this class do not take a spelling test all year —in fact, the school avoids all pencil-and-paper tests —nor do they get assigned homework. Instead, their teacher gives them immediate feedback(反馈) on their work throughout the day.
Welcome to the school of the 21st century, a place where teachers and students cooperate all the time. Such advanced classrooms are trying things, which some might consider as coddling kids —
letting students give a voice-recorded essay instead of a written one or even allowing teens to design their own courses.
Though some people blame schools for dumbing things down (降低教育标准) , others will say such changes are actually based on the newest research on how to attract today’s youth and increase not only their interests, but also their achievements. Many of toda y’s school are not holding kid’s interests. And if they’re not interested, they’re not learning —and isn’t that the point?
“Students today say they want their education to be useful and valuable, and don’t want it to be simply repeating the facts. That’s the kind of learning that be happening for many kids,” says Penny Milton, a researcher. “What we could argue is that to become good learners, they need to become thinkers.”
Jan Olson, anther researcher, says schools have been operating the same way since the Industrial Revolution. But the digital age is bringing an education revolution. While using technology is a part of it, what’s important for students is being able to use information and understand it, not just remembering it.
Today’s learner needs fewer traditional tests and more “effective” feedback, ongoing discussion with a teacher, which studies have found is the number one factor in improving achievement.
25. The first two paragraphs are used to_______.
A. blame Liz for not being responsible for her work
B. describe what schools are like in the 21st century
C. give an example of a successful school lesson
D. question whether it is right not to assign homework
26. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 means “some people may think it as a way of____”
A. spoiling children
B. making children become lazy
C. leading children to make mistakes
D. caring about children
27. Jan Olson thinks it important for students to ______.
A. repeat the facts without really thinking
B. learn something related to technology
C. make full use of information
D. use technology to improve their grades
28. Which is the most effective way to help students achieve more?
A. Assigning more homework
B. Offering immediate answers.
C. Giving more pencil-and-paper tests.
D. Holding more discussions with them.

Last month, James Connolly, a junior at the University of Massachusetts, stood in front of a local police station wearing a loose garment as punishment. His crime? He was charged with underage drinking, illegal possession of alcohol and very big noise while holding a party.
This shaming punishment has increased in the US in recent years, mostly decided by local judges for less-serious crimes such as drunk driving and theft. They believe shame is the best small crime punishment. For example, in Tennessee, Judge James McKenzie has made a shoplifter stand outside Wal-Mart with signs that read, “ I’m a thief put here by order of Judge McKenzie.”
Some experts think alternative punishm ents like community service and fines don’t convey moral condemnation (谴责) of the criminal because they aren’t shameful enough. Shaming punishments are sometimes called Scarlet Letter punishments. The name comes from US author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 no vel, The Scarlet Letter. In this novel, a woman is forced to wear a scarlet ( red) ”A” on her clothes as punishment for her adultery.
Supporters of shaming punishment argue that public shaming is a good way of expressing community values. Some judges sa y shamed offenders seldom repeat their crimes. Others aren’t so sure. “There is little evidence to suggest that shaming punishment are successful in preventing
people from committing special crimes. And a shamed criminal may face a hard battle to regain reputation in society. So a shaming punishment may force the offender into more crime to support himself.”
29. James Connolly was punished because_______.
A. he wore a loose garment in front of a local police station
B. he drunk too much and caused an accident
C. he broke the law of alcohol consumption and held a noisy party

30. In early American societies, offenders________.
A. wore a scarlet “A” on their clothes as shaming punishment
B. would never gain respect from others
C. didn’t receive any moral condemnation
D. had the chance of being accepted by the societies again
31. We can infer from the passage that__________.
A. shaming criminals publicly is a good way of expressing community values
B. shaming punishment has a long history in the US
C. shaming punishment can always have good results
D. community service and fines don’t convey moral condemnation of criminals
32. What is the best title of the passages?
A. Doubtful Punishment
B. Successful Punishment
C. The Increasing Punishment in the US
D. The Result of Shaming Punishment in the US
