Lord Coe has won his greatest ever race by bringing the 2012 Olympics to London.
He may have won two Olympic gold medals and smashed 12 world records, but Coe’s achievement in leading London to a surprising victory eclipses(使黯淡)them all. His job is understandable as it is his leadership which has been the key to helping London win sport’s biggest prize.
For so long the London bid was regarded as way off the pace and when the five candidate cities were originally shortlisted, London was rated(排在)third behind Paris and Madrid. And Paris was universally regarded as such strong favorites that the competition was seen as effectively.
But with the exquisite timing that he showed so often in a memorable career, Coe helped London produce the late charge which saw them pip their French rivals.
He joined London’s team as one of three vice-chairmen two years ago, but by May last years he was in charge—taking over from American businesswoman Barbara Cassani.
His CV was perfect for the job, not only did he have the medals and the profile(人生经历)but his contacts(接触)and knowledge of sporting politics gave him very big influence with those who would decided, whether London will win. And with quiet determination, Coe began to turn the fortunes of London’s bid around.
Importance was put on the legacy(遗产) of the Games for London and Britain as well as trying to address concerns over the capital’s transport system. The use of stars such as Sir Steve Redgrave, David Beckham and Matthew Pinsent gave the bid an air of authority that was hard to ignore.
With sporting figures, politicians and the public lending support, the IOC’s evaluation commission gave a glowing report after their visit to London in February and the race was well and truly on.
Coe traveled tirelessly and by the time the world’s focus turned to Singapore for the crucial vote on Wednesday, the London bid had incredible momentum.
But Coe saved his finest masterstroke for the closing moments of the campaign when he delivered a very personal speech to IOC delegates during London’s final presentation in Singapore. His speech , in the final moments of an incredibly close battle, turned the race in London’s favour.
Before the result was announced Coe had said, “If we win I’ll carry the flame home; if we lose I’ll carry the can.”
So many times in his athletics career he was on the shoulders of his rivals on the final bend before producing his trademark kick for home to claim victory.
And he did just that in Singapore to claim Olympic glory for Britain once again.

Blogs
A “Blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet website called a “blog”. The word “blog” is a short way of saying “web log”,or “personal website”.Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.
There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to the people who read them. They contain links to other websites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react to the ideas of others.
A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.
However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.
At the same time , some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service “”.He said the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the site was closed.
One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca’s Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the website in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called The Weblog Handbook. It has been translated into four languages so far.
Miss Blood says Rebecca’s Pocket gets about thirty thousand visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything—politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent being stolen from online bank accounts.
65.The text is mainly written to___________.

C.it provides useful information and advice
D.it has editions in at least four different languages

The best thing you can say about the roofs of most city buildings is that you don’t have to look at them much. Tha t’s very old, since an urban landscape viewed from above can be an unlovely thing—block after block of tarred(铺有沥青的)black rooftops, sticky in summer, windswept in winter, ugly year-round. Or at least that’s the way it used to be.
But urban roofs are going green. Environmental designers have begun to realize that the tops of buildings don’t have to be wastelands. Indeed, they can be gardens, planted with grasses, flowers and bushes.
A planted roof usually comes in one of two varieties: extensive or intensive. The extensive type is wide and shallow, with a soil depth of less than 8 inches, able to support smaller plants. The intensive type may be smaller, but it’s relatively deeper and home to large plants.
Whatever the design, green roofs are not so simple as ordinary gardens. They have multiple layers beneath the soil, including a drainage layer, waterproofing, structural support, and so on.
But this system can do a great deal of good. A recent paper in the journal BioScience tells that green roofs can control temperature, contain water and clean the air. And most impressively, they can cut heat loss from a building by 50%, lower air-conditioning costs by 25%, and reduce the urban-heated –island effect by2o C.
Of course, apart from the square feet greened and heat reduced, green roofs are even more valued since people can gain some psychological comfort simply by having a quiet place to go. As so often happens, what’s good for the planet can also be good for the spirit.
