What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius,
like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent
or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.
We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways,
the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理
学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems
to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If,
on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.
Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or
an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it
is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”
66. The words “intelligent” and “brilliant” in the first paragraph probably mean _______ while “dull” in the second paragraph means ________.
A. bright and splendid; slow in thinking and understanding
B. pretty and handsome; ordinary-looking
C. great and important; common
D. hopeful and helpful; careless
67. According to the context we can guess that a genius is ________ while an idiot is ________.
A. a normal person; a funny person
B. a strong person; a weak person
C. a highly intelligent person; a foolish or weak-minded person
D. a famous person; an ordinary person
68. A person ________ is more likely to become a genius.
A. whose parents are clever
B. often thinking about difficult problems
C. often helped by his parents and teachers
D. born with a good brain and putting it into active use
69. It is better for parents ________.
A. to praise and encourage their children more often
B. to be hard on their children
C. to leave their children alone with nothing to do
D. to give their children as much help as possible
70. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?
A. Parents play an important part in their children’s growth.
B. The less you use your mind the duller you may become.
C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.
D. What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion.
D
To many Americans,Labor Day(劳动节) marks the end of the summer,a day off from work and school, and one last chance to relax. But Labor Day is much more than just a day off . It represents a very important victory for laborers everywhere. The holiday is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.
More than a century ago workers were forced to deal with harsh conditions. They were paid very little and they often worked 10-to l2-hour days.Men, women and even small children were forced to work even when they were sick.Tired of long hours and dangerous conditions, workers began organizing themselves into labor unions. On top of fighting for higher pay and shorter workdays, they also fought for the rights of children. The workers wanted employers to place limits on the age of their workers so that small children were not overworked or hurt in factories.
A New York City carpenter named Peter McGuire is credited(获得赞誉) for coming up
with the idea for Labor Day.In 1872,after working many hours under poor conditions, McGuire rallied100,000 workers to go on strike. The workers marched through the streets of New York City, demanding a better work environment.McGuire spent a decade fighting for workers’ rights. In 1882,he proposed(提议)the idea to create a special holiday for workers. On Tuesday,September 5,1882, more than 10,000 workers hit the streets of New York City for the first ever Labor Day parade. Two years later the celebration was moved to the first Monday in September. And in 1894,Congress passed a law making Labor Day a national holiday.Americans celebrated the first Labor Day holiday with a parade, picnics and fireworks.
Today, many people hit the road to enjoy the last of their summer vacation.Others enjoy the long weekend with picnics, backyard barbecues or just rest and relaxation. However you spend Labor Day,remember that the holiday is a time to pay tribute (致敬)to the workers who have made America what it is today.

第四部分写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文并根据短文后的要求回答问题(请注意问题后的词数要求)。
Everyone has dreams. Usually they obey the rule that if you can dream it, you can achieve it!If you want to obtain a perfect life in the future, there are always some goals.
The first goal common to all of us is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high levels of energy and to live free of pain and illness. Today, with the incredible advance in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not everything, but without health everything is nothing!
The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships—intimate, personal or social—with the people we like and respect, and who ______________in turn(反过来). Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like and respect you, have more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor.
The third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and promoted faster. You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, no matter what you are engaged in.
The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have any financial worries. You want to be completely free of them. You want to be able to order dinner in
a restaurant without referring to the price listings to determine what you want to eat.
76. What does this passage mainly about? (no more than 12 words)
_________________________________________________________________
77. Fill in the blank in Paragraph 3 with proper words. (no more than 6 words)
