Text 1
W:When I'm playing the piano,I don't worry about anything.How about you?
M:I go to the gym every day.It helps me deal with stress.
Text 2
W:Hi,I'm calling about the three-bedroom house you said in yesterday's paper. It sounds really nice.
M:It is,especially if you have children.
Text 3
W:Can you help me figure out the best place to buy a second-hand car? M:There are a lot of different ways to go.I bought my last one from an advertisement in the paper.
Text 4
W:Will John be coming to class this afternoon?
M:He's supposed to.But actually he won't come to this class from the hospital until next week as the doctor has said.
Text 5
M:Oh,darling,I am so tired.Shall we go back?
W:But we'll have to buy some cartoons for our boys.
M:I would rather do it tomorrow.
W:OK,if you insist.Text 6
M:Hi,Susan!I heard you've been to many places in China during the past year.
W:Yes,I have.I love traveling.
M:Which do you prefer?Going on a package tour with a tour agency or going on your own—a “Do-It-Yourself” tour?
W:When I first came to China,I usually took package tours but now I've found Do-It-Yourself tours are more interesting.
M:Yes,they are.I like traveling independently. There's not so much freedom in a package tour.
Text 7
W:Yes,sir. What can I do for you?
M:I'm shopping around for a suit.
W:Yes,sir.What size do you wear?
M:I think my size is 42.I'd like something in light brown.
W:I have something here that might suit you.
M:That's nice.It must be expensive.
W:It's only $150.00,plus tax.
M:How long will it take to alter it by the tailor?
W:You can pick it up in 24 hours.
M:Good.I also need a couple of shirts.
W:Yes,sir.Right over here, please.Do you know your neck size?
M:No,I'm not familiar with American sizes.
W:Well,I can easily measure you...The shirts on this shelf are your size, sir.
M:I'll take this one and this one.
W:OK.
Text 8
M:So,as you can see, she's a beauty. One previous owner kept it in the garage the whole time, and only drove it on weekends.
W:That's why it only has about 25,000 miles on it,even though it's ten years old.
M:Exactly. The owner also kept all the service records. So you can tell it's been taken care of.
W:Does this car come with a service contract?
M:All our cars come with a 30-day agreement,so you won't pay for anything within the first month. But since this car is used,we can't offer anything beyond that.
W:I see.The price of almost $15,000 seems a little high.Is there any way we can bring that down?
M:This car is in very good condition, madam. And based on our research of similar cars being sold in the area,we believe it's a fair price. All taxes and fees are included as well.
W:OK.Can I take it for a test drive?M:Absolutely! Let me just get the keys.
Text 9
W:What are you going to do on this beautiful warm Sunday?
M:I think I shall do a bit of gardening. Will you help me?
W:Of course,I will.Shall I put on my gardening boots?
M:Yes,do and so will I.I am going to dig up that dead tree at the bottom of the garden.
W:Shall I be able to help you?
M:No,I don't think you will. You can be cutting off the tops of the dead flowers—they make the garden look so untidy. And all those flowers by the wall you can pull up by the roots. We want the ground to be quite clear before the winter.
W:Are you going to water those new fruit trees?
M:No,I shan't do that.Because I think it will rain tomorrow. But I am going to cut the grass.
W:I will cut it if you like.
M:No,you just clear the flowerbeds and then we will see.
W:I say how black those clouds are getting! I think it is going to rain. M:Then we shall leave to put off our gardening until this afternoon. Text 10
Millions of New Yorkers and visitors ride the city's subway each day.The public transportation system offers more than just a trip, however. It
also has one of the most public art collections in the world. Some people call it New York's “underground art museum”.It includes 265 works of art. They are meant to brighten everyone's ride around the city.
There is a huge painting of the night sky on the ceiling of Grand Central Terminal.New Yorkers have been looking up at that artwork for 100 years. For the past 30 years, works that relate to city life around a train station have been made. There are small, rounded, metal creatures of the Atlantic Ocean.Native plants and flowers can be found in a garden scene in Brooklyn.
Many riders praise the underground art.Tonya Pierre says,“I think it's nice when you see these kinds of attractive things in places like the subway stations that seem a little bit dull.Even on cloudy winter days, the works in New York's underground art museum can also bring life into the dark passage.”

Before one man walked upon a muddy New Jersey riverbank, baseball was a deadly game.
In 1938,Phillies third-base coach Lena Blackburne happened to step into a stream in the Delaware River, and realized he found a solution for one of baseball's biggest problems.
Back then balls fresh from the box were slippery and hard to control.Players tried to improve their grips (紧握力) with tobacco juice or shoe polish, but as the balls got dirtier, they just got harder to see.Batting helmets hadn't been invented yet,and players were having trouble keeping their eyes on the errant (无定向的) balls. One batter was even killed.
So when Blackburne came across the slippery mud near his hometown fishing hole, his mind went straight to the field. The mud was gritty (含砂的),with the look and feel of chocolate pudding. He brought some home and found that, sure enough,it coated the ball perfectly, improving the grip without damaging the leather. When Blackburne showed the result to American League umpires (裁判员),they gave his mud a thumbs-up.By the 1950s,every major-league team was using it.
Now,before every major-and minor-league game (as well as many college games),an umpire or clubhouse attendant wipes a light coat of Blackburne's magic mud on each ball used. The mud hole's location remains a closely guarded secret to this day.Only one person,Jim Bintliff, the mud's farmer, knows where to find it.

I was so surprised to find so many differences in the various school systems. The differences are huge. They mainly lie in the date school starts, the age at which kids start school, grading systems and teaching methods.
In Germany, school kids are given a school cone on their first day of school. It can be filled with sweets, snacks, art supplies, lunch boxes, little books and small gifts. The kids can only open it at school. On entering a school, the kids don't have to be able to write their names, although they must be able to hold a pen properly.School readiness is decided by not only physical development but also social skills.
Russian children always start school on September 1st even if it's a holiday or the weekend. This is referred to as “Knowledge Day” and marks both the first day of school and the first day of autumn. Most kids bring a change of shoes to school. The classrooms of the elementary school through the high school are usually in the same building.
Dutch children go to school on their fourth birthday. This results in some chaos as new kids are added to the class throughout the year during the first year. The kids get to play and learn social skills and only start “real school” when they're 6.However,school is not compulsory until the kids are 5 years old.
Polish kids have to wear a formal costume—usually a white blouse
with navy blue trousers or skirts for the girls and suits for the boys for the first day of school and school ceremonies. There's also an opening ceremony where the kids are sworn in as the students of the first class.
Finnish schools are considered to be the best in the world. They're also very hands-off (不干涉的): no grades until Year Three. There are no national tests until the 12th year.Teachers are trusted and respected, and they have a lot of autonomy (自治权).

There is such a thing as winning by too much.A final score of 161-2 recently earned one winning coach of a Californian high school girls' basketball team a two-game suspension (停赛) for unsportsman-like behavior.
“The game just got away from me.I didn't expect them to be that bad.I'm not trying to embarrass anybody,” Arroyo Valley Coach Michael Anderson told the San Bernardino Sun about the blowout against Bloomington. In the second half,he played substitutes instead of starters, who played when the game began.
Hmm.Calling your competitor “bad” probably isn't helping the cause.
Coaches from other local high schools have spoken against Anderson's tactics (战术) as well.Throughout the entire first half of the game,Anderson used a full-court press,a method of playing basketball in which one team puts pressure on the other team in all parts of the court, and eventually his team won by 103 points.Bloomington only scored 1 point.
“Let them score,” Cajon Coach Mark Lehman, who led his team to victory too, said.“I don't think anyone would've had a problem if it was 161-50.But 161-2?...Why not put up defense?”
Bloomington dealt with the loss as well as they could.
“People shouldn't feel sorry for my team” Coach Dale Chung said after the game.“They should feel sorry for his team, which isn't learning the game the right way.”
He said he was proud of his team, because the game would hardly affect them. However,he added,“But it should affect them a little.”
The suspension doesn't seem to have changed the team's tactics much. After the 159-point win,Arroyo played against Indian Springs and won by 61 points.
“They responded as the y usually do,” Arroyo's assistant coach Nick Anderson,19,told the San Bernardino Sun of the 80-19 win.He was filling in for his dad,who was suspended.
He said,“It's nothing different. We just have a different coach. We're still going to run our game plan, lik e we always do.”【语篇解读】本文是议论文。

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项。
Five simple things that are actually complex
The proof for “1+1=2” is 300 pages long
__36__In the early 20th century,Bertrand Russell wanted to prove that mathematics worked,so he decided to start with the simplest concept and prove 1+1=2.However,it took the mathematician and philosopher 372 pages of complex sums.
Defining the word “the” is really difficult
The word “the” is one of the most common words in English.__37__ For example, why do we say,“I have the flu,” but not “I have the headache?” In the Oxford English Dictionary, there are almost two dozen different ways the word can be used in a sentence correctly.
Yawning
Some people say we yawn to keep us alert (警觉的) by taking in oxygen. However, various experiments have shown that yawning actually cools down the brain.__38__As for why yawning is contagious (感染性的),no one knows that either.
Left and right have been confusing philosophers for years Would you explain the concept of left and right in terms of your relative position to a well-known landmark (地标性建筑)?__39__It's a question that has been puzzling philosophers for years because, without a point of reference,it's difficult to define what left and right actually are.
__40__
You'd think that the reason we enjoy things is because it feels good in some way,but it's only half the story. There's a famous experiment where wine experts were fooled into thinking a cheap bottle of wine was an outstanding one just by switching the labels.Their enjoyment of the product wasn't based on appreciation of wine—it was based on the fact that they were told it was good wine.
A.What you feel may not be the truth
B.We enjoy things for reasons other than enjoyment
C.But what if you were talking to one who couldn't see?
D.We all know that one plus one equals two,but do you know why? E.In fact, there is no universally agreed theory for why we actually yawn.
F.Maybe you'd refer to the move of the Earth or something comparably huge.
G.Most of us have probably never stopped to think about how strange a word it actually is.

]
]
39.C [根据本空前的内容可知,我们有时会以自己与某一地标性建筑的相对位置来定义左右,“但是如果我们是与一个盲人交谈呢”,又该如何定义左右呢?这也是为什么如何定义左右困扰了哲学家很多年。
]
40.B [根据本段列举的例子及最后一句Their enjoyment of the product wasn't based on appreciation of wine—it was based on the fact that they were told it was good wine可知,“我们喜欢一样东西不是因为它能带给我们愉悦,而是因为其他的原因”。
