假设我们乘坐时光飞船穿越到五百年前去，我们就可以说“降落到五百年前”。

这个upon就是“落到”，a time 就是“五百年前”。

但是有时我们讲穿越故事的时候，不知道或者不想说我们降落到了哪个具体时间，所以，我们说：降落到时间长河中的某一瞬。

一瞬即是 once，时间长河即是 a time。

所以，once upon a time，就是中文里的：“曾几何时”。
