Twenty years ago, computers were 28_________, but they were very large and extremely expensive. Few, if any, 29________ purchased computers for home use. Over they years, the price of the “guts” of a computer --- its memory --- has declined to less than a thousandth of the price per unit of memory that prevailed twenty years ago. This is the main reason why computers cost so much less today than they used to. 31_____ memory circuitry that is small enough to fit into the portable personal computers that many of us own and use. 32______, as the price of computation has declined the average consumer and business have spent more on purchasing computers.33________, improved agricultural technology, hybrid(杂交) seeds, 34________ animal breeding, and so on have vastly increased the amount of output a typical farmer can produce. The prices of goods such as meats and grains have fallen sharply relative to the prices of most other goods and services. As agricultural prices have fallen, many households have decreased their total expense on food. Even though the 35______ of a product purchased generally increases when its price falls, total expenses on it may decline.Part III Reading Comprehension (40 minutes)Section ATo get a sense of how women have progressed in science. Every year Berkeley sends its fresh female physics PhDs to the country’s top universities. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.Is College a Worthy Investment?A) Why are we spending so much money on college? And why are we so unhappy about it? We allseem to agree that a college education is wonderful, and yet strangely we worry when we see families investing so much in this supposedly essential good. Maybe it’s time to ask a question that seems almost sacrilegious(大不敬的): is all this investment in college education really worth it?B) The answer, I fear, is no. for an increasing number of kids, the extra time and money spentpursuing a college diploma will leave them worse off than they were before they set foot on campus.C) For my entire adult life, a good education has been the most important thing for middle-classhouseholds. My parents spent more educating my sister and me than they spent on their house, and they’re not the only ones…and, of course, for an increasing number families, most of the cost of their house is actually the cost of living in a good school district. Questioning the value of a college education seems a bit like questioning the value of happiness, or fun.D) The average price of all goods and services has risen about 50 percent. But the price of acollege education has nearly doubled in that time. Is the education that today’s students are getting twice as good? Are new workers twice as smart? Have they become somehow massively more expensive to education?E) Perhaps a bit, Richard V edder, an Ohio University economics professor, says, “I look at thedata, and I see college costs rising faster then inflation up the mid-1980s by 1 percent a year. Now I see them rising 3 to 4 percent a year over inflation. What has happened? The federal government has started dropping money out of airplanes.” Aid has increased, subsidized(补贴的) loans have become available, and “the universities have gotten the money.”Economist Bryan Caplan, who is writing a book abut education, agrees: “It’s a giant waste of resources that will continue as long as the subsidies continue.”F) Promotional literature for colleges and student loans often speaks of debt as an “investment inyourself.” But an investment is supposed to generate income to pay off the loans. More thanhalf of all recent graduates are unemployed or in jobs that do not require a degree, and the amount of student-loan debt carried by households had increased more than five times since 1999. these graduates were told that a diploma was all they needed to succeed, but it won’t even get them out of the spare bedroom at Mom and Dad’s. for many, the most visible result of their four years is the loan payments, which now average hundreds of dollars a month on lan balances in the tens of thousands.G) It’s true about the money---sort of. College graduates now make 80 percent more than peoplewho have only a high-school diploma, and though there are no precise estimates, the wage premium(高出的部分) for an outstanding school seems to be even higher. But tha t’s not true of every student. It’s very easy to spend four years majoring in English literature and come out no more employable than you were before you went in. conversely, chemical engineers straight out of school can easily make almost four times the wages of an entry-level high-school graduate.H) James Heckman, the Nobel Prize winning economist, has examined how the returns oneducation break down for individuals with different backgrounds and levels of ability. “Even with these high prices, you’re still finding a high return for individuals who are bright and motivated,: he says. On the other hand, “if you’re not college ready, then the answer is no, it’s not worth it.” Experts tend to agree that for the average student, college is still worth it today, but they also agree that the rapid increase in price is eating up more and more of the potential return. For borderline students, tuition(学费) rise can push those returns into negative territory.I) Everyone seems to agree that the government, and parents, should be rethinking how we investin higher education---and that employers need to rethink the increasing use of college degrees as crude screening tools for jobs that don’t really require college skills. “Employers seeing a surplus of college graduates and looking to fill jobs are just adding that requirement,”says Vedder. “In fact, a college degree becomes a job requirement for becoming a bar-tender.”J) We have started to see some change on the finance side. A law passed in 2007 allows many students to cap their loan payment at 10 percent of their income and forgives any balance after25 years. But of course, that doesn’t control the cost of education; it just shifts it to taxpayers. It also encourages graduated to choose lower-paying careers, which reduces the financial return to education still further. “You’re subsidizing people to become priests and poets and so forth,” says Heckman. “You may think that’s a good thing, or you may not.” Either way it will be expensive for the government.K) What might be a lot cheaper is putting more kids to work Caplan notes that work also builds valuable skills---probably more valuable for kids who don’t naturally love sitting in a classroom. Heckman agrees wholeheartedly: “People are different, and those abilities can be shaped. Tha t’s what we’ve learned, and public policy should recognize that.”L) Heckman would like to see more apprenticeship-style(学徒式) programs, where kids can learn in the workplace---learn not just specific job skills, but the kind of “soft skills,” like getting to work on time and getting along with a team, that are crucial for career success. “It’s about having mentors(指导者) and having workplace-based education,”he says. “Time and again I’ve seen examples of this kind of program working.”M) Ah, but how do we get there from here? With better public policy, hopefully, but also by making better individual decision. “Historically markets have been able to handle these things,”says Vedder, “and I think eventually markets will handle this one. If it doesn’timprove soon, people are going to wake up and ask, ‘Why am I going to college?’”46. Caplan suggests that kids who don’t love school go to work.47. An increasing number of families spend more money on houses in a good school district.48. Subsidized loans to college students are a huge waste of money, according to one economist.49. More and more kids find they fare worse with a college diploma.50. For those who are not prepared for higher education, going to college is not worth it.51. Over the years the cost of a college education has increased almost by 100%.52. A law passed recently allows many students to pay no more than one tenth of their income fortheir college loans.53. Middle class Americans have highly valued a good education.54. More kids should be encouraged to participate in programs where they can learn not only jobskills but also social skills.55. Over fifty percent of recent college graduates remain unemployed or unable to find a suitablejob.Section CPassage OneQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.A recent global survey of 2,000 high-net-worth individuals found that 60% were not planning on a traditional retirement. Among U.S. participants, 75% expected to continue working in some capacity even after stepping away from full-time jobs. “Many of these people made their wealthy by doing something they’re passionate(有激情的) about,” says Daniel Egan, head of behavioral finance for Barclays Wealth Americas. “Given the choice, they prefer to continue working.”Barclays calls these people “nevertirees.”Unlike many Americans compelled into early retirement by company restrictions, the average nevertiree often has no one forcing his hand. If 106-year-old investor Irving Kahn, head of his won family firm, wants to keep coming to work every day, who’s going to stop him? Seventy-eight-year-old Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s job security is guaranteed in the Constitution. It may seem that these elderly people are trying to cheat death. In fact, they are. And it’s working. Howard Friedman, a professor at UC Riverside, found in his research that those who work hardest and are successful in their careers often live the longest lives. “People are generally being given bad advice to slow down, take it easy, stop worrying, are retire to Foloida,”he described one study one study participant, still working at the age of 100, who was recently disappointed to see his son retire.“We’re beginning to see a change in how people view retirement,”says George Leeson, co-director of the Institute of Population Ageing at Oxford. Where once retirement was seen as a brief reward after a long struggle through some miserable job, it is now akin(近似) to being cast aside. What Leeson terms “the Warren Buffett effect”is becoming more broadly appealing as individuals come to “view retirement as not simply being linked to economic productivity but also about contribution.”Observers are split on whether this is a wholly good thing. On the one hand, companies and financial firms can benefit from the wisdom of a resilient(坚韧的) chief. On the other, the new generation can find it more difficult to advance---an argument that typically holds little sway to anevertiree.56. What do we learn about the so-called “nevertiree”?A. they are passionate about making a fortuneB. they have no choice but to continue workingC. they love what they do and choose not to retireD. they will not retire unless they are compelled to57. What do Irving Kahn and Ruth Bader Ginsburg have in common?A. neither of them is subject to forced retirementB. neither of them desires reward for their workC. both cling to their positions despite oppositionD. both are capable of coping with heavy workloads58. What is the finding of Howard Friedman’s research?A. the harder you work, the bigger your fortune will beB. the earlier you retire, the healthier you will beC. elderly people have to slow down to live longerD. working at an advanced age lengthens people’s life59. What is the traditional view of retirement according to the passage?A. it means a burden to the younger generationB. it is a symbol of mature and civilized societyC. it a compensation for one’s life-long hard workD. it helps increase a nation’s economics productivity60. What do critics say about “nevertirees?A. they are an obstacle to a company’s developmentB. they lack the creativity of the younger generationC. they cannot works as efficiently as they used toD. they prevent young people from getting aheadPassage TwoQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage. When we talk about Americans barely into adulthood who are saddled with unbearable levels of debt. The conversation is almost always about student loan debt. but there’s a growing body of evidence suggesting that today’s young adults are also drowning in credit-care debt---and that many of them will take this debt to their graves.More than 20% overspent their income by more than $100 every single month. Since they haven’t built up their credit histories yet, it’s a safe bet that these young adults are paying relatively high interest rates on the resulting credit card debt.Although many young people blame “socializing”as a barrier to saving money, most of them aren’t knocking back $20 drinks in trendy(时尚的) lounges. They’re struggling with much more daily financial demands. To a disturbingly large extent, the young and the broke are relying on credit cards to make it until their next payday. This obviously isn’t sustainable in the long run, and it’s going to put a huge drag on their spending power even after they reach their peak earning years. Because they’ll still be paying interest on that bottle of orange juice or box of spaghetti(意式面条)they bought a decade earlier.A new study out of Ohio State University found that young adults are accumulating creditcard debt at a more rapid rate than other age groups, and that they’re slower at paying it off. “If what we found continues to hold true, we may have more elderly people with substantial financial problems in the future,” warns Lucia Dunn, professor of economics at Ohio State. “If our findings persist, we may be faced with a financial crisis among elderly people who can’t pay off their credit cards.”Dunn says a lot of these young people are never going to get out from under their credit card debt. “Many people are borrow on credit cards so heavily that payoff rates at these levels are not sufficient to recover their credit card debt by the end of their life, which could have loss implications for the credit card issuing banks.”61. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?A. many young Americans will never be able to pay off their debtsB. credit cards play an increasingly important role in college lifeC. credit cards are doing more harm than student loansD. the American credit card system is under criticism62. Why do young people have to pay a higher interest on their credit card debt?A. they tend to forget about the deadlinesB. they haven’t developed a credit historyC. they are often unable to pay back in timeD. they are inexperienced in managing money63. What is said to be the consequence of young adults relying on credit cards to make ends meet?A. it will place an unnecessary burden on societyB. it will give them no motivation to work hardC. it will exert psychological pressure on themD. it will affect their future spending power64. What will happen to young adults if their credit card debt keeps accumulating according to Lucia Dunn?A. they will have to pay an increasingly higher interest rateB. they may experience a financial crisis in their old ageC. their quality of life will be affectedD. their credit cards may be cancelled65. What does Lucia Dunn think might be a risk for the credit card issuing banks?A. they go bankrupt as a result of over-lendingB. they lose large numbers of their regular clientsC. their clients leave their debts unpaid upon deathD. their interest rates have to be reduced now and thenPart IV Translation (30 minutes)Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. And why are we so unhappy about it? We all seem to agree that a college education is wonderful, and yet strangely we worry when we see families investing so much in this supposedly essential good. Maybe it’s time to ask a question that seems almost sacrilegious (大不敬的): is all this investment in college education really worth it?B)The answer, I fear, is no. For an increasing number of kids, the extra time and money spent pursuing a college diploma will leave them worse off than they were before they set foot on campus.C)For my entire adult life, a good education has been the most important thing for middle-class households. My parents spent more educating my sister and me than they spent on their house, and they’re not the only ones... and, of course, for an increasing number of families, most of the cost of their house is actually the cost of living in a good school district. Questioning the value of a college education seems a bit like questioning the value of happiness, or fun.D)The average price of all goods and services has risen about 50 percent. But the price of a college education has nearly doubled in that time. Is the education that today’s students are getting twice as good? Are new workers twice as smart? Have they bee somehow massively more expensive to educate?E)Perhaps a bit. Richard Vedder, an Ohio University economics professor, says, “I look at the data, and I see college costs rising faster than inflation up to the mid-1980s by 1 percent a year. Now I see them rising 3 to 4 percent a year over inflation. What has happened? The federal government has started dropping money out of airplanes.”Aid has increased, subsidized (补贴的)loans have bee available, and “the universities have gotten the money.”Economist Bryan Caplan, who is writing a book about education, agrees: “It’s a giant waste of resources that will continue as long as the subsidies continue.”F)Promotional literature for colleges and student loans often speaks of debt as an“investment in yourself.”But an investment is supposed to generate ine to pay off the loans. More than half of all recent graduates are unemployed or in jobs that do not require a degree, and the amount of student-loan debt carried by households has increased more than five times since 1999. These graduates were told that a diploma was all they needed to succeed, but it won’t even get them out of the spare bedroom at Mom and Dad’s. For many, the most visible result of their four years is the loan payments, which now average hundreds of dollars a month on loan balances in the tens of thousands.G)It’s true about the money—sort of. College graduates now make 80 percent more than people who have only a high-school diploma, and though there are no precise estimates, the wage premium (高出的部分)for an outstanding school seems to be even higher. But that’s not true of every student. It’s very easy to spend four years majoring in English literature and e out no more employable than you were before you went in. Conversely, chemical engineers straight out of school can easily make almost four times the wages of an entry-level high-school graduate.H)James Heckman, the Nobel Prize-winning economist, has examined how the returns on education break down for individuals with different backgrounds and levels of ability. “Even with these high prices, you’re still finding a high return for individuals who are bright and motivated,”he says. On the other hand, “if you’re not college ready, then the answer is no, it’s not worth it.”Experts tend to agree that for the average student, college is still worth it today, but they also agree thatthe rapid increase in price is eating up more and more of the potential return. For borderline students, tuition (学费)rise can push those returns into negative territory.I)Everyone seems to agree that the government, and parents, should be rethinking how we invest in higher education—and that employers need to rethink the increasing use of college degrees as crude screening tools for jobs that don’t really require college skills. “Employers seeing a surplus of college graduates and looking to fill jobs are just adding that requirement,”says Vedder. “In fact, a college degree bees a job requirement for being a bar-tender.”J)We have started to see some change on the finance side. A law passed in 2007 allows many students to cap their loan payment at 10 percent of their ine and forgives any balance after 25 years. But of course, that doesn’t control the cost of education; it just shifts it to taxpayers. It also encourages graduates to choose lower-paying careers, which reduces the financial return to education still further. “You’re subsidizing people to bee priests and poets and so forth,”says Heckman. “You may think that’s a good thing, or you may not.”Either way it will be expensive for the government.K)What might be a lot cheaper is putting more kids to work. Caplan notes that work also builds valuable skills—probably more valuable for kids who don’t naturally love sitting in a classroom. Heckman agrees wholeheartedly: “People are different, and those abilities can be shaped. That’s what we’ve learned, and public policy should recognize that.”L)Heckman would like to see more apprenticeship-style (学徒式)programs, where kids can learn in the workplace—learn not just specific job skills, but the kind of “soft skills,”like getting to work on time and getting along with a team, that are crucial for career success. “It’s about having mentors (指导者)and having workplace-based education,”he says. “Time and again I’ve seen examples of this kind of program working.”M)Ah, but how do we get there from here? With better public policy, hopefully, but also by making better individual decisions.”Historically markets have been able to handle these things,”says Vedder, “and I think eventually markets will handle this one. If it doesn’t improve soon, people are going to wake up and ask,‘Why am I going to college?’”46. A law passed recently allows many students to pay no more than one tenth oftheir ine for their college loans.53. Middle-class Americans have highly valued a good education.54. More kids should be encouraged to participate in programs where they can learn not only job skills but also social skills.55. Over fifty percent of recent college graduates remain unemployed or unable to find a suitable job.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C)and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.A recent global survey of 2,000 high-net-worth individuals found that 60% were not planning on a traditional retirement. Among U.S. participants, 75% expected to continue working in some capacity even after stepping away from full-time jobs. “Many of these people made their wealth by doing something they’re passionate (有激情的)about,”says Daniel Egan, head of behavioral finance for Barclays Wealth Americas. “Given the choice, they prefer to continue working.”Barclays calls these people “nevertirees.”Unlike many Americans pelled into early retirement by pany restrictions, the average nevertiree often has no one forcing his hand. If 106-year-old investor Irving Kahn, head of his own family firm, wants to keep ing to work every day, who’s going to stop him? Seventy-eight-year-old Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s job security is guaranteed in the Constitution. It may seem that these elderly people are trying to cheat death. In fact, they are. And it’s working. Howard Friedman, a professor at UC Riverside, found in his research that those who work hardest and are successful in their careers often live the longest lives. “People are generally being given bad advice to slow down, take it easy, stop worrying, and retire to Florida,”he says. He described one study participant, still working at the age of 100, who was recently disappointed to see his son retire.“We’re beginning to see a change in how people view retirement,”says George Leeson, co-director of the Institute of Population Ageing at Oxford. Where once retirement was seen as a brief reward after a long struggle through some miserable job, it is now akin (近似)to being cast aside. What Leeson terms “the Warren Buffett effect”is being more broadly appealing as individuals e to “view retirement as not simply being linked to economic productivity but also about contribution.”Observers are split on whether this is a wholly good thing. On the one hand, panies and financial firms can benefit from the wisdom of a resilient (坚韧的)chief. On the other, the new generation can find it more difficult to advance—anargument that typically holds little sway to a nevertiree.56. What do we learn about the so-called”nevertirees”?A)They are passionate about making a fortune.B)They have no choice but to continue working.C)They love what they do and choose not to retire.D)They will not retire unless they are pelled to.57. What do Irving Kahn and Ruth Bader Ginsburg have in mon?A)Neither of them is subject to forced retirement.B)Neither of them desires reward for their work.C)Both cling to their positions despite opposition.D)Both are capable of coping with heavy workloads.58. What is the finding of Howard Friedman’s research?A)The harder you work, the bigger your fortune will be.B)The earlier you retire, the healthier you will be.C)Elderly people have to slow down to live longer.D)Working at an advanced age lengthens people’s life.59. What is the traditional view of retirement according to the passage? A)It means a burden to the younger generation.B)It is a symbol of a mature and civilized society.C)It is a pensation for one’s life-long hard work.D)It helps increase a nation’s economic productivity.60. What do critics say about “nevertirees”?A)They are an obstacle to a pany’s development.B)They lack the creativity of the younger generation.C)They cannot work as efficiently as they used to.D)They prevent young people from getting ahead.Passage TwoQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage. When we talk about Americans barely into adulthood who are saddled with unbearable levels of debt, the conversation is almost always about student loan debt. But there’s a growing body of evidence suggesting that today’s young adults are also drowning in credit-card debt—and that many of them will take this debt to their graves.More than 20% overspent their ine by more than $100 every single month. Since they haven’t built up their credit histories yet, it’s a safe bet that these young adults are paying relatively high interest rates on the resulting credit card debt.Although many young people blame “socializing”as a barrier to saving money, most of them aren’t knocking back $20 drinks in trendy (时尚的)lounges. They’re struggling with much more daily financial demands. To a disturbingly large extent, the young and the broke are relying on credit cards to make it until their next payday. This obviously isn’t sustainable in the long run, and it’s going to put a huge drag on their spending power even after theyreach their peak earning years, because they’ll still be paying interest on that bottle of orange juice or box of spaghetti (意式面条)they bought a decade earlier.A new study out of Ohio State University found that young adults are accumulating credit card debt at a more rapid rate than other age groups, and that they’re slower at paying it off. “If what we found continues to hold true, we may have more elderly people with substantial financial problems in the future,”warns Lucia Dunn, professor of economics at Ohio State. “If our findings persist, we may be faced with a financial crisis among elderly people who can’t pay off their credit cards.”Dunn says a lot of these young people are never going to get out from under their credit card debt. “Many people are borrowing on credit cards so heavily that payoff rates at these levels are not sufficient to recover their credit card debt by the end of their life, which could have loss implications for the credit card issuing banks.”61. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?A)Many young Americans will never be able to pay off their debts.B)Credit cards play an increasingly important role in college life.C)Credit cards are doing more harm than student loans.D)The American credit card system is under criticism.62. Why do young people have to pay a higher interest on their credit card debt? A)They tend to forget about the deadlines.B)They haven’t developed a credit history.C)They are often unable to pay back in time.D)They are inexperienced in managing money.63. What is said to be the consequence of young adults relying on credit cards to make ends meet?A)It will place an unnecessary burden on society.B)It will give them no motivation to work hard.C)It will exert psychological pressure on them.D)It will affect their future spending power.64. What will happen to young adults if their credit card debt keeps accumulating according to Lucia Dunn?A)They will have to pay an increasingly higher interest rate.B)They may experience a financial crisis in their old age.C)Their quality of life will be affected.D)Their credit cards may be cancelled.65. What does Lucia Dunn think might be a risk for the credit card issuing banks? A)They go bankrupt as a result of over-lending.B)They lose large numbers of their regular clients.C)Their clients leave their debts unpaid upon death.D)Their interest rates have to be reduced now and then.Part IV Translation (30 minutes)Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. For questions 8-20, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Community College SqueezeEighteen-year-old Jenna Tibbitts has a near-perfect GPA(Grade Point Average), and her parents can afford to send her to the four-year university of her choice. But the New Jersey senior is opting instead to attend nearby Atlantic Cape Community College on a scholarship for two years before transferring to a four-year school so that she can reduce the overall cost of her education. "It just makes more sense," Tibbitts says.Similarly, Sarah Tibbling, 18, an honor student from Vernon, N.J., plans to attend Sussex County Community College next fall,a move she sees as a stepping-stone on the way to getting her degree at a four-year institution. "Community college is more popular with students these days," she says, and that's reduced some of the negative stigma (污名)." It's no longer considered a place for lower-level students."Like Tibbling and Tibbitts, high-achieving high-school graduates nationwide are increasingly putting four-year institutions on hold and enrolling at community colleges for part of their education. According to a survey from the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, nearly one-fifth of private colleges and universities reported a smaller than anticipated freshman class this fall. At the same time, the American Association of Community Colleges reports that community-college enrollment rose 8 to 10 percent. That's not unexpected--community-college enrollment usually climbs during a down economy as newly unemployed workers look to get additional training. But normally, the age of the average student rises, whereas this time around, the average age on campus has remained low because there are so many more traditional-aged students, say administrators. "The segment of fresh high-school graduates is growing fast," says Anson Smith, public relations coordinator for Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, Conn.Community-college administrators are thrilled to attract top performers, but they also worry that the influx (涌进) of students who can afford other options is squeezing out the disadvantaged students such schools were built to serve. Most community colleges have open admission--no SAT(Scholastic Aptitude Test)or GPA required--but classroom slots fill up on a rolling basis. "Unfortunately for students who can't make plans in advance, they will get to the doors and find out there is no room," says Northern Virginia Community College President Robert Templin. Many students typically register for classes later on because they're unprepared to navigate the system, he says, and they're often first-generation college students or coming from underperforming high schools. While administrators like Templin have made efforts to reach out to less-advantaged students earlier in high school,he says it's difficult to offer individualized support to a burgeoning (生机勃勃的) prospective student population. "Many community-colleges administrators are very fearful that middle class students will come and squeeze out poorer and moderate-income students," he says.At most schools, the pressure is mounting. Community-college enrollment spiked this fall, but the schools were already experiencing a trend of increased enrollment. From 2000 to 2006, enrollment grew 10 percent, according to the most recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics. George Boggs, president of the American Association of Community Colleges, attributes the growth to changes in the general perception of community colleges. "Our reputation has continued to improve," he says. According to a 2008 report from the Department of Education, the proportion of high-school seniors with high standardized-test scores and strong overall qualifications enrolling in community colleges has grown since 1992.The report also found that two-thirds of students who apply to community colleges intend to go on to earn a four- year degree at another institution. Still, some college counselors remain wary about advising high-performing students to take this route. "The community college may not be a good academic fit for all students," says Bob Bardwell, a guidance counselor in Monson,Mass. "Some complain it's not challengingenough." Furthermore, he adds, students often find it's not as easy to transfer into the four-year schools they want as they might have thought. But just when their profile is improving and demand is climbing, community colleges are seeing their resources disappear. The struggling economy has prompted state and local government, the main revenue source for most community colleges, to cut back on budgets, which means freezing new hires and slashing class sections. "The funding gets cut at the worst possible time," says Boggs. According to a 2007 survey conducted by the National Council of State Directors of Community Colleges, 16 states reported that they lacked the capacity to meet the projected community- college needs of high-school graduates in their states. Leo Chavez, president of Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif., is bracing for further budget cuts, though he already had to turn away many prospective students this fall. "We have students coming to us in droves," he says."It's really a crisis. Applications are rising dramatically and, at the same time, we are reducing what we can offer."As is the case nationwide, in California, applications are already pouring in for the fall 2009 semester; the state's Community College League estimates that up to 250,000 students will have to be turned away. Simone The lemaque, 24, of Palo Alto,Calif. ,knows that frustration firsthand. She worked as a waitress to save enough money for classes at nearby Foothill College. But when she went to register in July, two months before the start of the semester, she was already too late. Her math and English classes were already at capacity. "It's really discouraging," she says. Unlike some other students, she can't afford to take classes anywhere else. But Thelemaque hasn't given up. She's hoping to get the classes this upcoming semester and if she can't, she'll try again next year. She's determined to get a college degree, because it's what she needs to get her dream job:she wants to be a teacher.1.Why does Jenna Tibbitts choose to attend Atlantic Cape Community College first instead of the four-year university'?A) She has a near-perfect GPA. B) Her parents are worried about her safety.C) She wants to reduce the cost. D) She is not ready to go to university.2.What does Sarah Tibbling say about community college?A) It's just a stepping-stone to society.B) It's more popular than a four-year institution.C) It's the only way to getting a higher degree.D) It was once considered a place for poor-achieving students. 3.What did the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities find about some private colleges and universities?A) Their enrollments decrease. B) Their enrollments climb up.C) Their students' average age rises. D) Their students' average age remains low.4.Why has the average age on community college campus remained low this year?A) There are fewer unemployed workers.B) The recession drives people to get training early.C) There are more fresh high-school graduates.D) There are fewer adult students for additional training.5.The original purpose of community colleges was to serve______.A) the underperforming students B) the top graduatesC) the students from poor families D) the middle-class students6.According to George Boggs, what has contributed to the increasing enrollments of community colleges?A) The improved reputation of the community colleges.B) The rapid growth of the economy.C) The high standardized-test scores of students.D) The increased number of fresh high-school graduates.7.What do some students complain about community college according to Bob Bardwell?A) Its tuition fee is too high to be afforded.B) Its courses are targeted at high-performing students.C) Its facilities are not enough for everyone.D) Its courses are not challenging enough.8.According to Leo Chavez, due to budget cuts, his community college has to turn down many______.9.Simone Thelemaque failed in applying for Foothill College because she was______for registration.10.Before Simone Thelemaque could get her dream job,she has to get______.Part ⅣReading Comprehension (Reading in Depth)Section ADirections: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank followingthe passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre .You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once.Species can respond to global warming in two ways: adapt and survive, or die. Biologists foresee climate change driving many species to (47) over the next century, especially those that are unable to adjust (48) enough. Plants and animals evolved to (49) in specific ecological environment, and while some may adapt to new environments--and many have already--for many others, it will take time. But the changes driven by human-generated greenhouse gases may be coming on too fast. That's exactly what appears to be happening with the worldwide lizard (蜥蜴) population. A few years ago, a team of herpetologists (爬虫学家) first noticed a suspicious pattern of extinctions among populations of European lizards. At the time,it wasn't (50) why they were dying--it could have been global warming, but it also could have been disease or loss of habitat. So researchers set out to get the hard evidence, ultimately launching a global study that (51) drew in more than two dozen scientists from around the world. The results, appearing in the May 14 issue of Science, are (52) :populations of lizards have been lost on five continents over the past few decades, and based on these extinction patterns--and the current (53) of global warming--scientists (54) that by 2080 nearly 40% of all lizard populations and 20% of lizard species could vanish. Given that lizards are a key (55) of food for many birds, snakes and other animals, and are important predators of insects, the (56) of these animals could have major influence up and down the food chain.A) clear I) predictB) distinguish J) disappearanceC) extinction K) expectD) vividly L) surviveE) eventually M) sourceF) believable N) dramaticG) rapidly O) rateH) originSection BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A ), B), C)and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage One"Do you know what the most complex mass of protoplasm (原生质) on earth is?"Marian Diamond asks her students on the first day of anatomy class as she casually opens a flowery hatbox and lifts out a preserved human brain. "This mass only weighs 3 lb., and yet it has the capacity to conceive of a universe a billion light-years across. Isn't that marvelous?"Diamond is an esteemed neuroanatomist (神经解剖学家) and one of the most admired professors at the University of California, Berkeley. It would be a privilege for anyone to sit in on her lectures. And, in fact, anyone can. Videos of her popular course are available free online, part of a growing movement by academic institutions worldwide to open their once exclusive halls to all who want to peek inside. In March,YouTube launched an education hub called YouTube Edu, dedicated exclusively to videos from the more than 100 schools--ranging from Grand Rapids Community College to Harvard Business School--that have set up official channels on the site. Liberated from the stew of pop-culture vlogs (视频博客) and silly cat videos, the collection highlights how much free education is out there. The bigger question is, why have colleges started posting all this stuff at no charge? "Schools have always wanted to have their own area where they could be among their peer institutions and help with the discovery of their content," says Obadiah Greenberg, who leads the project at YouTube. The volume of YouTube Edu's content, which includes campus tours and other nonacademic material, can be overwhelming, but the view-count sorting feature helps users quickly locate must-see videos, which they can comment on and rate on a five-star scale. There is clearly a big appetite for all kinds of online lectures. But one of the most interesting consequences of open courseware may be its impact on teachers, who have a new way to get feedback--and exposure."It used to be that research was No. 1. Now people are working harder to be better teachers," Diamond says. Sifting through e-mails, the 82-year-old professor reads overmessages she's saved from students and teachers who watched her lectures from as far away as England and Egypt. "At this time of life, when everybody else is retiring and stepping aside, thinking they've done it all, you're getting this worldwide connection. It's beautiful."57. Why can anyone have the privilege to listen to Diamond's lecture?A) Everyone can have the opportunity to tour around the campus.B) Her university opens its door to all who want to study there.C) Videos of her courses are now available to people online.D) She has been touring around the world to give lectures.58. What do we know about YouTube Edu?A) It is aimed to open lectures to all who want to have a look.B) It helps many schools to set up official channels online.C) Viewers can comment on the videos of courses on the site.D) It is a collection of pop-culture vlogs and fun videos.59.According to Greenberg, colleges post the courses online for free to______.A) claim its status in a particular area B) attract potential studentsC) follow the innovation in education D) share their intellectual property60.According to the passage, how could students find the most popular videos quickly in YouTube Edu?A) By entering the title of the video. B) By referring to the view-count sorting.C) By reading the viewers' comments. D) By using an open courseware.61.What is the positive influence the online video courses have on teachers?A) They can pay more attention to research.B) They can know better about students' responses.C) They can delay their retiring time.D) They can connect worldwide teachers together.Passage TwoAdmit it: at some point in your life, you've been completely obsessed. Obsessed with a particular project perhaps, or a great author,or that hot senior who smiled at you once when you were a freshman. Obsession is common and typically harmless, often a powerful motivator and a source of artistic inspiration. Yet its extremes are also feared and criticized, because they form the foundation for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a disease that has apparently exploded in prevalence in recent decades. How exactly can we reconcile two conflicting notions of the same phenomenon?Perhaps we can't--but we can gain some insight by taking a closer look at society's complex history with obsession, Lennard J. Davis assumes in his new book. Since the 18th century our understanding of obsession has evolved from believing it to be an incurable "madness", thought to afflict a small number of people who were typically poor, to a potentially curable disease afflicting many, including the upper classes.Mental illnesses such as OCD and depression (or at least the tendencies toward them)have practically become a hallmark of passion. This association could partially explain why such illnesses are now so commonly diagnosed, Davis maintains since 1970 diagnoses of OCD have increased at least 40-fold.Davis's book also provides biographies of famous artists and psychiatrists with obsessive tendencies. Those who have a purely scientific interest in OCD, however, may find themselves a little bored at times. However, Davis makes several interesting points. For one thing, he says, the difference between OCD and healthy obsession may simply be self- perception. People with OCD feel they are abnormal and wish they could change; obsessive people who do not have OCD--including people with "obsessive-compulsive personality", considered by psychiatrists to be normal--feel just fine.Considering the close relation between OCD and "healthy obsessions" ,Davis argues that we tend to draw too strong a line between the healthy and the pathological (病态的). Many people have careers that require repetitive-almost obsessive—attention, and most of us take notice of warnings to take careful precautions in our daily routines to stay healthy and protect ourselves. "We suffer from many requirements of modern life that make us focus on one thing, or many single things," Davis writes. OCD, he explains, is simply a subcategory (子范畴) of what we all do every single day.62. How does the author understand obsession?A) It is a popular project that improves people's feeling.B) It is a h~rmless thing that motivates and inspires people.C) It is a kind of mental illness which is fearful and prevalent.D) It is a symptom that will certainly develop into OCD.63.What is Lennard J. Davis's opinion towards the reconciliation of the two notions?A) People are definitely unable to reconcile the two notions.B) People today have to look at the OCD closely.C) It's not difficult to reconcile the two notions.D) People can comprehend them through history observation.64.How do people's views about obsession evolve?A) People nowadays believe obsessions may be generally curable.B) People in the past believed it was madness carried by all classes.C) People in the past believed it was an incurable physical disease.D) People nowadays believe only upper class carry the disease.65.What may be the difference between obsessive people and people with OCD according to Davis?A) People with OCD behave abnormally but think they are normal.B) The two kinds of people just have different self-perceptions.C) People with OCD have obsessive-compulsive personality.D) Obsessive people think they are better than people with OCD.66. What attitude to OCD and healthy obsession should people take in life?A) People should draw a line between OCD and healthy obsession.B) People would better take careful measures to fight OCD.C) People should not make a fuss of obsession.D) People with careers requiring obsessive attention should worry about themselves.Part ⅤClozeDirections: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.Mark your answers on Answer Sheet Two.TEXT AThe art of public speaking began in ancient Greece over 2,000 years ago. Now, twitter, instant messaging, e-mail, blogs and chat forums offer rival approaches to communication—but none can replace the role of a great speech. The spoken word can handle various vital functions: persuading or inspiring, informing, paying tribute, entertaining, or simply introducing someone or something or accepting something.Over the past year, the human voice has helped guide us over the ups and downs of what was certainly a stormy time.Persuasion is used in dealing with or reconciling different points of view. When the leaders met in Copenhagen in December 2009, persuasive words from activists encouraged them to commit themselves to firmer action.Inspirational speeches confront the emotions. They focus on topics and matters that are close to people's hearts. During wars, generals used inspiring speeches to prepare the troops for battle.A speech that conveys knowledge and enhances understanding can inform us. The information must be clear, accurate, and expressed in a meaningful and interesting way. When the H1N1 pandemic(流行病)was announced, the idea of “swine flu”(猪流感)scared many people. Informative speeches from World Health Organization officials helped people to keep their panic under control so they could take sensible precautions.Sad events are never easy to deal with but a speech that pays tribute to the loss of a loved one and gives praise for their contribution can be comforting. Madonna's speech about Michael Jackson, after his death, highlighted the fact that he will continue to live on through his music. It's not only in world forums where public speaking plays an important role. It can also be surprisingly helpful in the course of our own lives. If you‟re taking part in a debate you need to persuade the listeners of the soundness of your argument. In sports, athletes know the importance of a pep talk(鼓舞士气的讲话)before a match to inspire teammates. You yourself may be asked to do a presentation at college or work to inform the others about an area of vital importance. On a more personal level, a friend may be upset and need comforting. Or you might be asked to introduce a speaker at a family event or to speak at a wedding, where your language will be needed to move people or make them laugh.Great speaking ability is not something we're born with. Even Barack Obama works hard to perfect every speech. For a brilliant speech, there are rules that you can put to good use. To learn those rules you have to practice and learn from some outstanding speeches in the past.81. The author thinks the spoken word is still irreplaceable becauseA. it has always been used to inspire or persuade people.B. it has a big role to play in the entertainment business.C. it plays important roles in human communication.D. it is of great use in everyday-life context.82. Speeches from medical authorities can calm people down in times of pandemics.C. The morale of soldiers before a battle can be boosted by senior officers' speeches.D. Speeches paying tribute to the dead can comfort the mourners.83. Public speaking can play all the following roles EXCEPTA. to convince people in a debate.B. to inform people at a presentation.C. to advise people at work.D. to entertain people at a wedding.84. It can be acquired from birth.D. It comes from learning and practice.85. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Public speaking in international forums.B. The many uses of public speaking.C. Public speaking in daily life context.D. The rules of public speaking.TEXT BEvery business needs two things, says Skullcandy CEO Rick Alden: inspiration and desperation. In 2001, Alden had both. He'd sold two snowboarding businesses, and he was desperately bored. But he had an idea: He wanted to make a new kind of headphone.“I kept seeing people missing their cell phone calls because they were listening to music,” he explains. Then I'm in a chairlift(索道), I've got my headphones on, and I realize my phone is ringing. As 1 take my gloves off and reach for my phone, I think, “It can't be that tough to make headphones with two plugs, one for music and one for your cell phone.”Alden described what he wanted to a designer, perfected a prototype, and outsourced(外包)manufacturing overseas.Alden then started designing headphones into helmets, backpacks - anywhere that would make it easy to listen to music while snowboarding. “Selli ng into board and skate shops wasn't a big research effort,” he explains. “Those were the only guys I knew!”Alden didn‟t want to be a manufacturer. And by outsourcing, he'd hoped he could get the business off the ground without debt. But he was wrong. So he asked his wife, “Can I put a mortgage(抵押贷款)on the house? She said, …What is the worst thing that can happen? We lose the house, we sell our cars, and we start all over again.‟ I definitely married the right woman!”For the next two years, Alden juggled mortgage payments and payments to his manufacturers. “Factories won't ship your product till they get paid,” he says. “But it takes four or five months to get a mortgage company so upset that they knock on your door. So we paid the factory first.”Gradually, non-snowboarders began to notice the colorful headphones. In 2006, the company started selling them in 1,400 FYE (For Your Entertainment) stores. “We knew that nine out often people walking into that store would be learning about Skullcandy for the first time. Why would they look at brands they knew and take home a new brand instead? We had agreed to buy back anything we didn‟t sell, but we were dealing with huge numbers. I t‟d killus to take back all the products.”Alden‟s fears faded as Skullcandy bec ame the No. 1 headphone seller in those stores and tripled its revenue to $120 million in one year. His key insight was that headphones weren‟t gadgets; they were a fashion accessory. “In the beginning,” he says, “that little white wire that said you had an iPod—that was cool. But now wearing the white bud means you‟re just like everyone else. Headphones occupy this critical piece of cranial real estate and are highly visible.”Today, Skullcandy is America's second-largest headphone supplier, after Sony. With 79 employees, the company is bigger than Alden ever imagined.86. Alden came up with the idea of a new kind of headphone because heA. was no longer in snowboarding business.B. had no other business opportunities.C. was very fond of modern music.D. saw an inconvenience among mobile users.87. The new headphone was originally designed forA. snowboarders.B. motorcyclists.C. mountain hikers.D. marathon runners.88. Did Alden solve the money problem?A. He sold his house and his cars.B. Factories could ship products before being paid.C. He borrowed money from a mortgage company.D. He borrowed money from his wife's family.89. What did Alden do to promote sales in FYE stores?A. He spent more money on product advertising.B. He promised to buy back products not sold.C. He agreed to sell products at a discount.D. He improved the colour design of the product.90. Alden sees headphones asA. a sign of self-confidence.B. a symbol of status.C. part of fashion.D. a kind of device.TEXT CI was standing in my kitchen wondering what to have for lunch when my friend Taj called.“Sit down,” she said.I thought she was going to tell me she had just gotten the haircut from hell. I laughed and said, “It can't be that bad.”But it was. Before the phone call, I had 30 years of retirement saving in a “safe” fund with a brilliant financial guru(金融大亨).When I put down the phone, my savings were gone. I felt as if I had died and, for some unknown reason, was still breathing.Since Bernie Madoff‟s arrest on charges of running a $65 million Ponzi scheme, I‟ve read many articles about how we investors should have known what was going on. I wish I could say I had reservations about Madoff before “the Call”, but I did not.On New Year‟s Eve, three weeks af ter we lost our savings, six of us Madoff people gathered at Taj's house for dinner. As we were sitting around the table, someone asked, “If you could have your money back right now, but it would mean giving up what you have learned by losing it, would you take the money or would you take what losing the money has given you?”My husband was still in financial shock. He said, “I just want the money back.” I wasn't certain where I stood. I knew that losing our money had cracked me wide open. I‟d been walking around like what the Buddhists call a hungry ghost: always focused on the bite that was yet to come, not the one in my mouth. No matter how much I ate or had or experienced, it didn‟t satisfy me, because I wasn‟t really taking it in, wasn't absorbing it. Now I was forced to pay attention. Still, I couldn't honestly say that if someone had offered me the money back, I would turn it down. But the other four all said that what they were seeing about themselves was incalculable, and they didn‟t think it would have become apparent without the ground of financial stability being ripped out from underneath them.My friend Michael said, “I‟d started to get complacent. It‟s as if the muscles of my heart started to atrophy(萎缩). Now they‟re awake, alive—and I don‟t want to go back.”These weren‟t just empty words. Michael and his wife needed to take in boarders to meet their expenses. Taj was so broke that she was moving into someone‟s garage apartment in three weeks. Three friends had declared bankruptcy and weren't sure where or how they were going to live.91. What did the author learn from Taj‟s call?A. had got an awful haircut.B. They had lost their retirement savings.C. Taj had just retired from work.D. They were going to meet for lunch.92. How did the author feel in the following weeks?A. Angry.B. Disappointed.C. Indifferent.D. Desperate.93. According to the passage, to which was she “forced to pay attention”?A. Her friends.B. Her husband.C. Her lost savings.D. Her experience.94. Which of the following statements is CORRECT about her friends?A. Her friends valued their experience more.B. Her friends felt the same as she did.C. Her friends were in a better financial situation.D Her friends were more optimistic than she.95. What is the message of the passage?A. Desire for money is human nature.B. One has to be decisive during crises.。

大学英语四级(2013年12月考试改革适用)模拟试卷4(题后含答案及解析)

大学英语四级(2013年12月考试改革适用)模拟试卷4(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. Writing 2. Listening Comprehension 3. 4. Reading Comprehension 5. TranslationPart I Writing1.For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay. You should start your essay with a brief description of the picture and then express your views on individualism. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.individualism: 个人主义正确答案:On Individualism The picture shows that it rains heavy. “Do you think that individualism is an increasing tendency?” The journalist, protected by an umbrella, asks a pedestrian who is like a drenched chicken in the rain. Nowadays, with the exchange of cultures and minds between the West and the East, the idea of individualism has raised great debates. Some people think that individualism may have good effects—it emphasizes the benefits of each single individual and the individuality that each social member strives to keep. It may promote the diversity of society. However, others hold opposite opinions. For one thing, they deem that individualism makes people care so much about their own benefits that some may become indifferent and hard-hearted to others(just like the journalist in the picture). For another, exceeding individualism hinders the cooperation between people, companies and organizations. In my opinion, we should try our best to avoid the bad effects of individualism and make full use of its beneficial effects so that a diversified and harmonious world will be built up.Part II Listening ComprehensionSection A听力原文:W: There is a limit of three books each person, but you take four books. M: Thank you for telling me this. I’ll drop this one and be certain to return the other three on time. Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place?2.A.In a library.B.In a book store.C.In a book company.D.In a booking office.正确答案:A解析:女士说每个人最多只可以借三本书,而男士拿了四本,男士说他将放回去一本,并表示一定会按时归还其他三本,由此可知,对话最可能发生在图书馆,故答案为A)。

The experience is notunlike driving through the American Midwest, only rice not corn dominates the landscape.Four years ago, when I last took this trip, the roads were dust and telephone wires didnot run parallel to the highway. Bare roads have been replaced by sleek, newly pavedhighways running from Shanghai to Nanking, to my smaller, home city, Wuhu. Unlike thechanges I had heard of and expected in Shanghai, Wuhu was much more of a surprise. Thesmall city where I was born had grown up as I have. Little seemedfamiliar and I wonder what my grandparent’s flat built of brick and mortar had become.Perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised to find out that their home had beendemolished and rebuilt as a six story apartment complex as well. Walking up to the secondfloor I saw my grandfather’s face peering out of the screen door. He began to smile as hesaw me, and so did I. Their home is now no different from a western apartment. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A. Flash back to ChinaB. From Shanghai to NankingC. Wuhu TodayD. Back With My Grand ParentsPassage Two:Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:Now let us look at how we read. When we read a printed text, oureyes move across a page in short, jerky movement. We recognize wordsusually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate,we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or thevisual span. The length of time of which the eyes stop --- the durationof the fixation --- varies considerably from person to person. It alsovaies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and hisfamiliarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factorsas lighting and tiredness.Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courseshave concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printedpage. As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visualaspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train theeyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of asecond. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes onsome central point, taking in the words on either side. Such wordpatterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids sothe reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. Allthese exercises are very clever, but it’s one thing to improve a person’sability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability toread a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the编号:专业班学号:姓名:装订线出题人:大学英语教研室教研室负责人签字:王志慧系主任签字:冯梅relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begunto question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains aperson to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading acontinuous text.56. The time of the recognition span can be affected by the following facts except ______.A. one’s familiarity with the textB. one’s purpose in readingC. the length of a group of wordsD. lighting and tiredness57. The author may believe that reading ______.A. requires a reader to take in more words at each fixationB. requires a reader to see words more quicklyC. demands a deeply-participating mindD. demands more mind than eyes58. What does the author mean by saying “but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability tosee words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently.” in thesecond paragraph?A. The ability to see words is not needed when an efficient reading is conducted.B. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to improve both the ability to see and tocomprehend words.C. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to improve an efficient reading.D. The reading exercises mentioned has done a great job to improve one’s ability to seewords.59. For many Americans, this is the season to travel. Why? Because school is over and the weather is great. And most of all, they believe they deserve a break. When Americans take a break, they often head for their favorite vacation spot.Throughout their history, Americans have been people on the move. The early immigrants had to travel to get to the New World. Once they arrived, the settled along the East Coast. But they weren’t content to stay here. Explorers and traders journeyed to the unknown western territories. Later, settlers moved west to develop new areas. As a result of this west movement, Americans eventually occupied the whole continent—from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Even today, Americans seem unable to stay put. Research says that average American moves every five years.Americans are used to traveling. Some people make long-distance commuting to work daily. Their jobs may even require them to take frequent business trips. Most companies provide an annual vacation for their employees, and people often use that time to travel. Some people just visit friend or relatives in distant states. Some go on low-budget weekend trips and stay in economy motels. Those with more expensive tastes choose luxurious hotels. Camping out in the great outdoors appeals to adventurous types. Some travel in recreational vehicles to camp out in comfort, while others “rough it”by sleeping in tents. Families often plan their trips with the kids in mind. More and more “family friendly” hotels offer special programs for children.PetAmericans love pets. Many pet owners treat their pets as a part of the family. You might say Americans treat their pets like they treat their children—sometimes even better. In America, there are more households with pets than those with children. At least 43 percent of US homes have pets of some sort. Usual creatures, such as monkeys, snakes and even wolves, find a home with some Americans. More common pets include fish, mice and birds. But the all-time favorites are cats and dogs, even at the White House. Americans sometimes have strong feelings about whether dogs or cats make better pets. “Dog people”and “cat people” often enjoy friendly competition. Many grocery stores in America sell pet foods. Pets can even accompany their owners on vacation. Fancy hotels are beginning to accommodate both man and animal. Animal guests at Four Seasons Hotels can enjoy delicious meals served on fine china and sleep in soft beds. The average American enjoys having pets around, and for good reason. Researchers have discovered that interacting with animals lowers a person’s blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from robbers and unwelcome visitors. Cats can help rid the home of unwanted mice. Little creatures of all shapes and sizes can provide friendship and love. In many cases, having a pet prepares a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood. Pets even encourage social relationships: they give their owners an appearance of friendliness, and they provide a good subject of conversation.Pets are as basic to American culture as hot dogs or apple pie. To Americans, pets are not just property, but a part of the family.Marriage“I do.” To Americans, these two words carry great meaning. They can even change your life, especially if you say them at your own wedding. Making wedding promises is like signing a contract. Now Americans don’t really think marriage is a business deal. But marriage is a serious business. It all begins with engagement (婚约). Traditionally, a young man asks the father of his sweetheart for permission to marry her. If the father agrees, the man later proposes to her. Often he tries to surprise her by asking her to marry him in a romantic way.Sometimes the couple just decides together that the time is right to get married. They may be engaged for weeks, months or even years. As the big approaches, bridal (新娘的) showers and bachelor’s parties provide many gifts. Today many couples also receive counseling during engagement. This prepares them for the challenges of married life.At last it’s time for the wedding. Although most weddings follow long-held traditions, there’s still room for individualism. For example, the usual place for a wedding is in a church. But some people get married outdoors. A few even have the ceremony while skydiving or riding on horseback! The couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few close friends. They choose their own style of colors, decorations and music during the ceremony. But some things rarely change. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue”. The groom (新郎) wears a formal suit. Relatives and close friends participate in the ceremony. As the ceremony begins, the groom stands with the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their promises. Traditionally, they promise to love each other “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health”. But sometimes the couple composes their own promises. They give each other a gold ring as a symbol of their marriage promise. Finally the minister announces the big moment: “I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!”1.What is the top reason Americans travel in the summertime?A)School is over.B)They think they deserve a rest.C)Summer is the season to travel.D)The weather is great.2.Every year, most companies _______.A)require a business tripB)insist that workers commuteC)have employees travel togetherD)provide a vacation for workers3.Many Americans treat their pets as _______.A)very usual thingsB)very common thingsC)their own propertyD)their family members4.According to the passage, some fancy hotels could provide for your pets the followingexcept _______.A)good accommodationB)some well-served foodC) a soft bedD)delicious Chinese meals5.It’s discovered that interaction with pet animals is good for health as they can help to_______.A)guard against unwelcome visitorsB)catch unwanted miceC)lower blood pressureD)keep company6.Pet can encourage social relationship by _______.A)acting as basic element to American cultureB)providing a subject for chattingC)becoming members for the familyD)having a friendly appearance7.Traditionally, if a young man wants to get married to his girlfriend he is supposed to_______.A)propose to his friend at the right timeB)ask his girlfriend to marry him in a romantic wayC)get the permission of his girlfriend’s motherD)get the permission of his girlfriend’s father8. Reading Comprehension (2*15=30 points)Directions: In this section there are three passages. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements with four choices marked A), B), C), and D).You are supposed to read the passage and make the best choice to complete eachquestion or unfinished statement. Then mark the corresponding letter on AnswerSheet with a single line through the centre.Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:Culture is one of the most challenging elements of the international marketplace. This system of learned behavior patterns characteristic of the members of a given society is constantly shaped by a set of dynamic variables: language, religion, values and attitudes, manners and customs, aesthetics, technology, education, and social institutions. To cope with this system, an international manager needs both factual and interpretive knowledge of culture. To some extent, the factual knowledge can be learned; its interpretation comes only through experience. The most complicated problems in dealing with the cultural environment stem from the fact that one cannot learn culture—one has to live it. Two schools of thought exist in the business world on how to deal with cultural diversity. One is that business is business the world around, following the model of Pepsi and McDonald’s. In some cases, globalization is a fact of life; however, cultural differences are still far from converging. The other school proposes that companies must tailor business approaches to individual cultures. Setting up policies and procedures in each country has been compared to an organ transplant; the critical question centers around acceptance or rejection. The major challenge to the international manager is to make sure that rejection is not a result of cultural myopia or even blindness.Fortune examined the international performance of a dozen large companies that earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseas. The internationally successful companies all share an important quality: patience. They have not rushed into situations but rather built their operations carefully by following the most basic business principles. These principles are to know your adversary, know your audience, and know your customer.26. According to the passage, which of the following is true?A. All international managers can learn culture.B. Business diversity is not necessary.C. Views differ on how to treat culture in business world.D. Most people do not know foreign culture well.27. According to the author, the model of Pepsi _____.A. favors the idea that the business is business the world aroundB. is different fr om the model of McDonald’sC. shows the reverse of globalizationD. has converged cultural differences28. The two schools of thought _____.A. both propose that companies should tailor business approaches to individual culturesB. both advocate that different policies be set up in different countriesC. admit the existence of cultural diversity in business worldD. both try to separate business from culture29. This article is supposed to be most useful for those _____.A. who are interested in researching the topic of cultural diversityB. who have connections to more than one type of cultureC. who want to travel abroadD. who want to run business on an international scale30. According to Fortune, successful international companies ______.A. earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseasB. all have the quality of patienceC. will follow the overseas local culturesD. adopt the policy of internationalizationQuestions31 to 35 are based on the following passage:Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological, and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable. The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents’ and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find a flaw in themselves.Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters’ performances. Positive reinforcement should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.31. An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is _____.A. to make sports less competitiveB. to make sports more challengingC. to put more emphasis on the resultsD. to increase their sense of success32. The positive feedback of their parents and coaches will help the young athletes_____.A. learn more about societyB. cooperate with othersC. find flaws in themselvesD. gain valuable social experiences33. According to the author, severe criticisms of the young athletes would _____A. help them enjoy themselves in sportsB. make them remember life’s lessonsC. be beneficial for their early developmentD. destroy their self confidence34. What the parents and coaches have tried to do is to _____.A. help children to win every gameB. pay more attention to letting children enjoy sportsC. enable children to understand the positive aspect of sportsD. train children to cope with stress35. The author’s purpose in writing the passage is _____.A. to persuade young children not to worry about criticismB. to discuss the skill of combining criticism with encouragementC. to stress the importance of positive reinforcement to childrenD. to teach young athletes how to avoid burnoutQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human conditions is our tendency to give and receive support from one another under stressful circumstances. Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to cope with major life changes and daily hassles (困难). People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over a range of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, reveal that the presence of social support helps people fend off illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives, andco-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others despite our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship supportive. Engaging in leisure-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support—financial aid, material resources, and needed services—that reduces stress by helping us resolve and cope with our problems.36. Interpersonal relationships are important because _____.A. they are indispensa ble to people’s social well-beingB. they awaken people’s desire to exchange resourcesC. they help people to cope with life in the information eraD. they can cure a range of illnesses such as heart disease, etc.37. Research shows that people’s phy sical and mental health _____.A. relies on the social welfare systems which support themB. has much to do with the amount of support they get from othersC. depends on their ability to deal with daily worries and troublesD. is closely related to their strength for coping with major changes in their lives38.
