2012年学位英语考试考题Part I Reading ComprehensionPassage 1【1-5 BCBAD】For centuries Dutch engineers have been fighting a war against water. Their main enemy is the sea. A large part of the country is below sea level. In fact, Holland is also called the “Netherlands” which means “low land.” Very tall and strong walls, called dykes, have built to keep out the sea. But in very rough weather the sea may suddenly burst through a dyke. Great damage can be caused by floods when this happens.Three large rivers are also part of the problem. These rivers are the Rhine, the Maas and the Scheldt. They flow through Holland into the North Sea. They have cut many passages across the country. At low tides, the rivers flow into the sea as usual. But at high tide, the sea can flow into the rivers! This is because the land is so low.The battles against the water never end, but they have made Holland a bigger and bigger country. In order to prevent floods, the engineers take or reclaim land that was under water. The Dutch have been reclaiming land for seven hundred years.Land is usually reclaimed from a passage between islands. Two dykes are built across the passage, so they block the water between them. Then the engineers dig long canals and pump the water into them. At low tide, the canals empty the water into the sea.Because the land is so low, water from the sea and rivers can rise up through the ground. For this reason, the pumps continue working even the land has been drained (that is, when the water has been pumped away). The dykes contain gates, and through these the water is pumped out. In many parts of Holland, pumps must be working all the time. If they stopped, there will be very bad floods.1. Water is the main threat to Holland because ____.A. the sea is too roughB. the land is lower than the seaC. the high and strong dykes can not keep the floods outD. the weather is too rough1.【答案】B第一段中提到:Their main enemy is the sea. A large part of the country is below sea level.他们主要的敌人就是海洋。

Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more. ks**5uLewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping the families while they ateordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children ther e are, the less question-asking there is.”The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible.” Says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”1. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______ .A. show the relationship between parents and childrenB. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner tableC. report on the findings of a studyD. give information about family problems2. Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______ .A. they are busy serving food to their childrenB. they are busy keeping order at the dinner tableC. they have to pay more attention to younger childrenD. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family4. Lewis research provides an answer to the question ______ .A. Why TV is important in family ks**5uB. why parents should keep good orderC. why children in small families seem to be quietD. why middle children seem to have more difficulties in life5. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?A. It is important to have the right food for children.B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.C. I thought.“I didn't have anything to say, Sir.”Lieutenant Colonel Boyd told me that my mother had contacted the American Red Cross, which in turn communicated with my commanding officer about my failure to write. Then he asked, “Do you see that desk, Private?”“Yes, Sir.”“Open the top drawer and you'll find some paper and a pen.Sit down right this minute and find something to say to your mother.”“Yes, Sir.”When I finished a brief letter, I stood before him again.“Private, I'm ordering you to find something to say to your mother at least once a week.Do you understand?” I did. Some thirty-five years later, my aged mother's mental condition was deteriorating, and I was forced to place her in a convalescent home(疗养所).As I went through her belongings, I began inspecting the contents of an old cedar chest. At the bottom, tied with a bright red ribbon, I found a bundle of letters. They were the letters I had been ordered to write from the Philippines.I sat on the floor of her apartment that afternoon reading each one, tears streaming down my cheeks.I now realized how deeply, as a young man, had upset her by my lack of consideration. The lesson I learned may have been too late to help my mother, but it's still done me good. These days I don't need a commanding officer standing over me to write to my loved ones on a regular basis.1.When the writer decided to join the more adventurous than young men when travelling abroad in gap years. One in three female backpackers visits more than three countries during a year out and travels alone, according to new research.By contrast, the majority of their male counterparts visit only one country and tend to travel in groups, says a survey by the Gap Year company, which provides information and services for students considering taking a year out.More women than men say that their prime reason for taking time off is to see the world and experience different cultures.Men were more likely to rank “having fun” highe r on their list of priorities.Women were more likely to value the challenge of a foreign trip, and many cited reasons such as learning a language and meeting new people. The more adventurous gap years taken by women seem to work to their benefit; more than three quarters of those surveyed reported increased confidence, self-reliance and independence, whereas only half of the men had that experience. The research also showed that women were more likely to do voluntary work while travelling, with more than one in ten helping with teaching or development projects. One of the reasons given for this is a wish to see the country in an authentic light.A greater proportion of women than men faced objections or criticism from their families over their gap-year plans.Among the men surveyed, lack of money was the main barrier to travel.Carolyn Martin, a doctor from London, was a typically confident female traveller.Starting in Cape Town, she travelled around southern Africa and Australia with a string of unusual and sometimes dangerous jobs.“I had one job chasing elephants off the runway in Africa by banging a stick against a pan,” she recalled.“It was OK but one day I did get chased by one.”She said that she had travelled alone because “you meet more people”.1.By referring to “gap year” the writer means ________.A.a gap you come across after leaving high schoolB.a time when you are caught in a dilemma between work and studyC.a period before you find a job upon your graduation from collegeD.a year off between high school and college for certain purposes2.According to the article, ________.A.most of the women students will travel abroad during the summer holidaysB.one third of the women students will travel abroad in a yearC.women students are more likely to travel abroad alone in gap yearsD.women students are willing to travel abroad in a group3.In the third paragraph, the underlined word “priorities” most probably means ________.A.selections B.Attractions C.preferences D.projects 4.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Men students will travel less during the gap year because of their part-time jobs.B.Women students will travel more but face more objections.C.The article suggests that women travelling alone will have dangerous experiences.D.Men students prefer to travel inside their own country to going abroad.5.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A.Girls Get the Best out of Gap YearsB.Boys Lack Courage in Gap YearsC.For Fun or for Adventure?D.Young Women Are More Adventurous答案DCCBA阅读4A person may have an idea about himself that will prevent him from doing good work.He may have the idea that he is not capable of it.A child may think he is stupid because he does not understand how to make the most of his mental faculties(机能), or he may accept another person's mistaken estimate(评价)of his ability.Older people may be handicapped(阻碍)by the mistaken belief that they are incapable of learning anything new because of their age.A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because he feels that it would be useless. He won't go at a job with the confidence necessary for success. He is therefore likely to fail, and the failure will strengthen his belief in his incompetence.Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience which illustrates this. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him.In this way, they too developed the idea, “Isn't it too bad that Alfred can't do arithmetic?” He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try,and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected. One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected the idea that he couldn't do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His new-found confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination and purpose, and he soon became extraordinary good at arithmetic. This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply one's ability, lack of confidence, and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability.1.Why might a person be prevented from doing good work? ________.A.Because he thinks he is old enough to make the most of his mental facilitiesB.Because he accepts another person's mistaken estimate of his abilityC.Because he has the idea that he is incapable of doing everythingD.Because he believes in what other people think of him2.A person who believes in his low ability will ________.A.spare no efforts to do thingsB.fail to go at a job but never lose heartC.change to learn other course instead of mathematicsD.show complete lack of confidence3.As a boy, Alfred Adler was poor at arithmetic because ________.A.he lost his self-confidenceB.he was weak in thinkingC.his parents expected too much of himD.his teacher had no confidence in herself4.Which of the following is the most important factor to Alder's success?________ A.Spirit and experienceB.Interest and self-respectC.Confidence and determinationD.Purpose and knowledge5.Alder's experience made him realize that ________.A.people are not as capable as they thinkB.people can be more capable than they Because smoke detectors reduce the risk of dying in a fire by half, firefighters often provide audiences with information on how to install these protective devices in their homes. Specifically, they tell them these things. A smoke detector should be placed on each floor of a home. While sleeping, people are in particular danger of an emergent fire, and there must be detector outside each sleeping area. A good site for a detector would be a hallway that runs between living spaces and bedrooms. Because of the dead-air space that might be missed by hot air bouncing around above a fire, smoke detector should be installed either on the ceiling at least four inches from the nearest wall, or high on a wall at least four, but no further than twelve, inches from the ceiling. Detectors should not be mounted near windows, entrances, or other places where drafts(过堂风)might direct the smoke away fromthe unit. She spent a lot of time drawing in the dirt with a stick to make her days more stimulating. Her keeper bought her some art supplies". George said, ", Ruby was excited about painting right from the beginning". The elephants at the art academies in the Southeast Asia are taught to hold a paintbrush with the tip of their trunks. A competitive personality is seen as important to success, especially in men. The development of social and political skills is also considered to be very important. To help Americans develop these other important skills, schools have added a large number of extracurricular(课程外)activities to daily life at school. This is especially tree of high schools and colleges and extends down into elementary schools as well. Athletics, frequently called "competitive sports", are perhaps the most important of these activities. Football, basketball, and baseball teams are seen as very important in teaching students, particularly boys, the "winning spirit". At times, athletic teams seem to become more important to some students and their parents than the academic programs offered by the schools.第16题Americans believe that education is ______.A.the only way to successB.the main purpose of the schoolsC.just like climbing laddersD.important to success第17题Which of the following is NOT mentioned as important to success?A.intellectual achievementpetitive personalityC.social backgroundsD.social and political skills第18题A variety of extracurricular activities are added in American schools ______.A.to help students climb the education ladderB.to enrich students" dull life at schoolC.to help students become more successful in later lifeD.to extend college education down into elementary schools第19题Athletic activities are designed ______.A.to make boys strongerB.to teach students winning spiritC.to develop students" social and political skillsD.to improve the academic programs第20题Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?cation and SuccessB.Extracurricular Activities at SchoolC.Athletic SportsD.Intellectual Achievement上一题下一题(21~25/共20题)阅读理解People once widely believed that intelligent life existed on Mars. The 19th-century discovery of what appeared to be geometric designs cut across the surface was taken as evidence. The lines were thought to have been a system of canals that had been built to irrigate the surface. It is now clear that "canals"—perhaps the most spectacular geologic features of Mars—are natural valleys where ancient rivers once flowed. Another fragmented idea concerns the planet"s seasonal changes in color. Once attributed to the rapid spread of some life-form, these shifts are nowknown to develop from the movement of fine dust in the atmosphere. By the close of the 20th century none of the many experiments conducted by spacecraft had ever found persuasive evidence of life. I confess that when I came out of the White House I signed up to do an "insider volume", but sober, professional second thoughts have led me to put that project on ice until at least 1980. The problem is that I simultaneously know too much, and not enough. I know what I thought was happening. But I cannot fully document what happened. And I have seen enough highly classified documents to know that most of what the observers thought was happening was at best half right, at worst dead wrong. This has steered me in a different direction as far as writing is concerned. I am now preparing what is frankly and unashamedly an ex parte memoir, "My Experiences in Washington". It is based on what I believed to be tree, on the picture as I conceptualized it, of the presidential administration under which I worked.SSS_SINGLE_SEL1.According to the speaker, the problem with "insider volumes" is that they ______.A tell things that should not be toldB lack historical perspectiveC are too sensationalD often intentionally distort the trothSSS_SINGLE_SEL2.When the speaker says that he "put that project on ice", he meansthat he ______.A put it in the refrigeratorB gave up on it completelyC took a rather cold attitude towards itD put it aside until laterSSS_SINGLE_SEL3.When the speaker says that he simultaneously knew "too much, and not enough", he means that he was ______.A more perceptive than others who were involved at this timeB too close to the events to see them objectivelyC unable to see any significance in current eventsD confused by the number of important events that were taking placeSSS_SINGLE_SEL4.The speaker"s experience in reading classified documents made him realize that ______.A others had been mistaken in interpreting events that they had observedB others knew more about current events than he didC he was the only responsible person who knew the truth about government affairsD he was a more impartial observer than anyone else in the governmentSSS_SINGLE_SEL5.According to the speaker, "My Experiences in Washington" will deal with ______.A secret documents never before released to the publicB an "insider"s" conceptualization of the government"s failuresC his personal view of that presidential eraD the administrative problems of the presidentDogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like wild animals. They will spoil your house, destroy your belongings, bark excessively, fight other dogs and even bite you. Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing. The key to preventing or treating behavior problems is learning to teach the dog to redirect its normal behavior to outlets that are acceptable in the domestic setting. One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to train(驯马) it to obedience. Obedience training doesn"t solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. Training opens up aline of communication between you and your dog. **munication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do. Training is also an easy way to establish the social rank order. When your dog obeys a simple request of "come here, sit", it is showing obedience and respect for you. It is not necessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the dog pack(群) by using extreme measures. You can teach your dog its subordinate(从属的) role by teaching it to show submission to you. Most dogs love performing tricks for you to pleasantly accept that you are in charge. Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. It can enrich your relationship and make living together more enjoyable. A well-trained dog is more confident and can more safely be allowed a greater amount of freedom than an untrained animal.SSS_SINGLE_SEL6.Behavior problems of dogs are believed to______.A be just part of their natureB worsen in modern societyC occur when they go wildD present a threat to **munitySSS_SINGLE_SEL7.The primary purpose of obedience training is to______.A teach the dog to perform clever tricksB make the dog aware to its owner"s authorityC provide the dog with outlets for its wild behaviorD enable the dog to regain its normal behaviorSSS_SINGLE_SEL8.**munication between a dog and its owner is______.A essential to solving the dog"s behavior problemsB the foundation for dogs to perform tasksC a good way to teach the dog new tricksD an extreme measure in obedience trainingSSS_SINGLE_SEL9.Why do pet dogs love performing tricks for their masters?A To avoid being punished.B To show their affection for their masters.C To win leadership of the dog pack.D To show their willingness to obey.SSS_SINGLE_SEL10.When a dog has received effective obedience training, itsowner______.A can give the dog more rewardsB will enjoy a better family lifeC can give the dog more freedomD will have more confidence in himselfSea horses have unusual parents. The female sea horses lay the eggs, but unlike other creatures. It"s the males that give birth to the young. Male sea horses have a fold of skin on their bellies that forms a pocket, called a brood pouch. During the breeding season, the sea horse"s pouch swells to receive eggs. A female sea horse lays up to 200 eggs at a time in the pouch. Then she swims off, leaving her male partner to care for the developing eggs and give birth to young sea horses. The female will return every day to check on her mate and the eggs, but she doesn"t stay long, nor does she take part in the birth. It takes from five to six weeks for the eggs in the male"s pouch to develop. During this time the male avoids open water and hides in sea grass. His big pouch makes it difficult from him to swim, so the male often uses his tall to grasp a piece of sea grass. Firmly, gripping the grass, he will stay perfectly still for hours or even days. The male sea horse will change Iris color to blend with his surroundings and avoid being seen by predators who will try to eat him or poke holes in his pouch to get the eggs. The eggs hatch inside the male"s pouch. When the babies begin moving around, the mate sea horse knows it"s time for them to be born. He grabs a sea grass stem with his tail and begins rocking, bending his body back and forth, this causes the opening to enlarge until wide enough for the first baby sea horse to shoot out. the father sea horse continues rocking, bending, and stretching his body so that the rest of the babies can be born. Sometimes he has to press his pouch against a rock or some stiff seaweed to force the young out. Sea horse babies are born in groups of five or more. Sometimes it takes two days for the father sea horse to give birth to all his young. He is very tiered when it"s over. Soon after giving birth to one brood, the male will approach his mat and show her his empty pouch. This tells her he is ready to receive eggs again.SSS_SINGLE_SEL11.What part does the female sea horse play in having babies?A Receive eggs.B Laying eggs.C Hatching eggs.D Protecting eggs.SSS_SINGLE_SEL12.What can be learned from the passage about giving birth to baby sea horse?A It is dangerous for fenmle.B It happens once a year.C It is hard work for the male.D It occurs in the deep sea.SSS_SINGLE_SEL13.To protect himself and his eggs, the male sea horse does all the following EXCEPT______.A changrng his colorB gripping a piece of grassC staying motionlessD enlarging his pouchSSS_SINGLE_SEL14.The author suggests when sea horse babies are ready to be born______.A the male sea horse seems very happyB it is difficult for them to come outC the female sea horse joins the maleD they need large space in the pouchSSS_SINGLE_SEL15.Which fact does the author want the reader to remember most?A The male sea horse gives birth to the young.B The female sea horse lays up to 200 eggs at a time.C Baby sea horses are born in groups of five or more.D The female will return every day to check on the eggs.Weather Forecast The following forecast shows for the listedcities the projected weather conditions and the expected range of temperatures from September 25,8-00 to September 26,8.00.SSS_SINGLE_SEL16.According to the forecast, ______A Beijing City will be cooler than BerlinB The weather will be fine in most of the listed cities of ChinaC Hong Kong and Macao have stronger wind than other listedcitiesD Temperatures will be the lowest in Kunming and LhasaSSS_SINGLE_SEL17.Which of the following cities is closest to Berlin in weather conditions?A BeijingB San FranciscoC RomeD New YorkSSS_SINGLE_SEL18.Which of the following cities has the greatest difference in temperature from day to night?A Hong KongB AthensC TorontoD BeijingSSS_SINGLE_SEL19.The weather condition will probably change from day to night in______.A Beijing, Tianjin, Macao, London, Paris, TorontoB Macao, Toronto, New York, RomeC Toronto. Answer the questions after each text by choosing A, B,C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (40points)Text 1Homework has never been terribly popular with students and even many parents, but in recent years it has been particularly scorned. School districts across the country, most recently Los Angeles Unified, are revising their thinking on his educational ritual. Unfortunately, L.A. Unified has produced an inflexible policy which mandates that with the exception of some advanced courses, homework may no longer count for more than 10% of a student’s academic grade. This rule is meant to address the difficulty that students from impoverished or chaotic homes might have in completing their homework. But the policy is unclear and contradictory. Certainly, no homework should be assigned that students cannot do without expensive equipment. But if the district is essentially giving a pass to students who do not do their homework because of complicated family lives, it is going riskily close to the implication that standards need to be lowered for poor children.District administrators say that homework will still be a pat of schooling: teachers are allowed to assign as much of it as they want. But with homework counting for no more than 10% of their grades, students can easily skip half their homework and see very little difference on their report cards. Some students might do well on state tests without completing their homework, but what about the students who performed well on the tests and did their homework? It is quite possible that the homework helped. Yet rather than empowering teachers to find what works best for their students, the policy imposes a flat, across-the-board rule.At the same time, the policy addresses none of the truly thorny questions about homework. If the district finds homework to be unimportant to its students’ academic achievement, it should move to reduce or eliminate the assignments, not make them count for almost nothing. Conversely, if homework does nothing to ensure that the homework students are not assigning more than they are willing to review and correct. The homework rules should be put on hold while the school board, which is responsible for setting educational policy, looks into the matter and conducts public hearings. It is not too late for L. A. Unified to do homework right.21. It is implied in paragraph 1 that nowadays homework[A] is receiving more criticism[B] is no longer an educational ritual[C] is not required for advanced courses[D] is gaining more preferences22. L. A. Unified has made the rule about homework mainly because poor students[A] tend to have moderate expectations for their education[B] have asked for a different educational standard[C] may have problems finishing their homework[D] have voiced their complaints about homework23. According to Paragraph 3, one problem with the policy is that it may[A] discourage students from doing homework[B] result in students' indifference to their report cards[C] undermine the authority of state tests[D] restrict teachers' power in education24. As mentioned in Paragraph 4, a key question unanswered about homework is whether .[A] it should be eliminated [B] it counts much in schooling[C] it places extra burdens on teachers [D] it is important for grades25. A suitable title for this text could be[A] wrong Interpretation of an Educational Policy[B] a Welcomed Policy for Poor Students[C] thorny Questions about Homework[D] a Faulty Approach to HomeworkText 2Pretty in pink: adult women do not remember being so obsessed with the colour, yet it is pervasive in our young girls’ lives. It is not that pink is intrinsically bad, but it is such a tiny slice of the rainbow and, though it may celebrate girlhood in one way, it also repeatedly and firmly fuses girls’ identity to appearance. Then it presents that connection, even among two-year-olds, between girls as not only innocent but as evidence of innocence. Looking around, I despaired at the singular lack of imagination about girls’ lives and interests.Girls’ attraction to pink may seem unavoidable, somehow encoded in their DNA, but according to Jo Paoletti, an associate professor of American Studies, it is not. Children were not colour-coded at all until the early 20th century: in the era before domestic washing machines all babies wore white as a practical matter, since the only way of getting clothes clean was to boil them. What’s more, both boys and girls wore what were thought of as gender-neutral dresses. When nursery colours were introduced, pink was actually considered the more masculine colour, a pastel version of red, which was associated with strength. Blue, with its intimations of the Virgin Mary, constancy and faithfulness, symbolized femininity. It was not until the mid-1980s, when amplifying age and sex differences became a dominant children’s marketing strategy, that pink fully came into its own, when it began to seem inherently attractive to girls, part of what defined them as female, at least for the first few critical years.I had not realized how profoundly marketing trends dictated our perception of what is natural to kids, including our core beliefs about their psychological development. Take the toddler. I assumed that phase was something experts developed after years of research into children’s behaviour: wrong. Turns out, according to Daniel Cook, a historian of childhood consumerism, it was popularized as a marketing trick by clothing manufacturers in the 1930s.Trade publications counselled department stores that, in order to increase sales, they should create a “third stepping stone” between infant wear and older kids’ clothes. It was only after “toddler” became a common shoppers’ term that it evolved into a broadly accepted developmental stage. Splitting kids, or adults, into ever-tinier categories has proved a sure-fire way to boost profits. And one of the easiest ways to segment a market is to magnify gender differences - or invent them where they did not previously exist.26. By saying "it is… the rainbow" (Line 2-3, Para. 1), the author means pink .[A] should not be the sole representation of girlhood[B] should not be associated with girls' innocence[C] cannot explain girls' lack of imagination[D] cannot influence girls' lives and interests27. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is true of colours?[A] Colours are encoded in girls' DNA.[B] Blue used to be regarded as the colour for girls.[C] Pink used to be a neutral colour in symbolizing genders.[D] White is preferred by babies.28. The author suggests that our perception of children's psychological development much influenced by .[A] the marketing of products for children[B] the observation of children's nature[C] researches into children's behavior[D] studies of childhood consumption29. We may learn from Paragraph 4 that department stores were advised to[A] focus on infant wear and older kids' clothes[B] attach equal importance to different genders[C] classify consumers into smaller groups[D] create some common shoppers' terms30. It can be concluded that girls' attraction to pink seems to be[A] clearly explained by their inborn tendency[B] fully understood by clothing manufacturers[C] mainly imposed by profit-driven businessmen[D] well interpreted by psychological expertsText 3In 2010, a federal judge shook America's biotech industry to its core. Companies had won patents for isolated DNA for decades-by 2005 some 20% of human genes were parented. But in March 2010 a judge ruled that genes were unpatentable. Executives were violently agitated. The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), a trade group, assured members that this was just a “preliminary step” in a longer battle. On July 29th they were relieved, at least temporarily. A federal appeals court overturned the prior decision, ruling that Myriad Genetics could indeed hold patents to two genes that help forecast a woman's risk of breast cancer. The chief executive of Myriad, a company in Utah, said the ruling was a blessing to firms and patients alike. But as companies continue their attempts at personalized medicine, the courts will remain rather busy. The Myriad case itself is probably not over Critics make three main arguments against gene patents: a gene is a product of nature, so it may not be patented; gene patents suppress innovation rather than reward it; and patents' monopolies restrict access to genetic tests such as Myriad's. A growing number seem to agree. Last year a federal task-force urged reform for patents related to genetic tests. In October the Department of Justice filed a brief in the Myriad case, arguing that an isolated DNA molecule “is no less a product of nature… than are cotton fibres that have been separated from cotton seeds.”Despite the appeals court's decision, big questions remain unanswered. For example, it is unclear whether the sequencing of a whole genome violates the patents of individual genes within it. The case may yet reach the Supreme Court. As the industry advances, however, other suits may have an even greater impact. Companies are unlikely to file many more patents for human DNA molecules-most are already patented or in the public domain. Firms are now studying how genes interact, looking for correlations that might be used to determine the causes of disease or predict a drug’s efficacy, companies are eager to win patents for ‘connecting the dots’, explains Hans Sauer, a lawyer for the BIO.Their success may be determined by a suit related to this issue, brought by the Mayo Clinic, which the Supreme Court will hear in its next term. The BIO recently held a convention which included sessions to coach lawyers on the shifting landscape for patents. Each meeting was packed.31. It can be learned from paragraph I that the biotech companies would like______A. their executives to be activeB. judges to rule out gene patentingC. genes to be patentableD. the BIO to issue a warning32. those who are against gene patents believe that ______A. genetic tests are not reliableB. only man-made products are patentableC. patents on genes depend much on innovationD. courts should restrict access to gene tic tests33. According to Hans Sauer, companies are eager to win patents for______A. establishing disease correlationsB. discovering gene interactionsC. drawing pictures of genesD. identifying human DNA34.By saying “each meeting was packed”(line4,para6)the author means that ______A. the supreme court was authoritativeB. the BIO was a powerful organizationC. gene patenting was a great concernD. lawyers were keen to attend conventions35. generally speaking, the author’s attitude toward gene patenting is ______A. criticalB. supportiveC. scornfulD. objectiveText 4The great recession may be over, but this era of high joblessness is probably beginning. Before it ends, it will likely change the life course and character of a generation of young adults. And ultimately, it is likely to reshape our politics, our culture, and the character of our society for years. No one tries harder than the jobless to find silver linings in this national economic disaster. Many said that unemployment, while extremely painful, had improved them in some ways; they had become less materialistic and more financially prudent; they were more aware of the struggles of others. In limited respects, perhaps the recession will leave society better off. At the very least, it has awoken us from our national fever dream of easy riches and bigger houses, and put a necessary end to an era of reckless personal spending. But for the most part, these benefits seem thin, uncertain, and far off. In The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth, the economic historian Benjamin Friedman argues that both inside and outside the U. S. , lengthy periods of economic stagnation or decline have almost always left society more mean-spirited and less inclusive, and have usually stopped or reversed the advance of rights and freedoms. Anti-immigrant sentiment typically increases, as does conflict between races and classes.Income inequality usually falls during a recession, but it has not shrunk in this one, Indeed, this period of economic weakness may reinforce class divides, and decrease opportunities to cross them--- especially for young people. The research of Till V on Wachter, the economist in Columbia University, suggests that not all people graduating into a recession see their life chances dimmed: those with degrees from elite universities catch up fairly quickly to where they otherwise would have been if they had graduated in better times; it is the masses beneath them that are left behind. In the internet age, it is particularly easy to see the resentment that has always been hidden within American society. More difficult, in the moment, is discerning precisely how these lean times are affecting society’s character. In many respects, the U.S. was more socially tolerant entering this recession than at any time in its history, and a variety of national polls on social conflict since then have shown mixed results. We will have to wait and see exactly how these hard times will reshape our social fabric. But they certainly it , and all the more so the longer they extend.36. (10 points)“Universal history, the history of what man has accomplished in this world, is at bottom the History of the Great Men who have worked here,” wrote the Victorian sage Thomas Carlyle. Well, not any more it is not.Suddenly, Britain looks to have fallen out with its favourite historical form. This could be no more than a passing literary craze, but it also points to a broader truth about how we now approach the past: less concerned with learning from forefathers and more interested in feeling their pain. Today, we want empathy, not inspiration. From the earliest days of the Renaissance, the writing of history meant recounting the exemplary lives of great men. In 1337, Petrarch began work on his rambling writing De Viris Illustribus―On Famous Men, highlighting the virtus (or virtue) of classical heroes. Petrarch celebrated their greatness in conquering fortune and rising to the top. This was the biographical tradition which Niccolo Machiavelli turned on its head. In The Prince, the championed cunning, ruthlessness, and boldness, rather than virtue, mercy and justice, as the skills of successful leaders.Over time, the attributes of greatness shifted. The Romantics commemorated the leading painters and authors of their day, stressing the uniqueness of the artist's personal experience rather than public glory. By contrast, the Victorian author Samual Smiles wrote Self-Help as a catalogue of the worthy lives of engineers, industrialists and explores. "The valuable examples which they furnish of the power of self-help, if patient purpose, resolute working and steadfast integrity, issuing in the formulation of truly noble and many character, exhibit," wrote Smiles. "What it is in the power of each to accomplish for himself." His biographies of James Walt, Richard Arkwright andJosiah Wedgwood were held up as beacons to guide the working man through his difficult life. This was all a bit bourgeois for Thomas Carlyle, who focused his biographies on the truly heroic lives of Martin Luther, Oliver Cromwell and Napoleon Bonaparte. These epochal figures represented lives hard to imitate, but to be acknowledged as possessing higher authority than mere mortals. Not everyone was convinced by such bombast. “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles,” wrote Marx and Engels in The Communist Manifesto. For them, history did nothing, it possessed no immense wealth nor waged battles: “It is man, real, living man who does all that.” And history should be the story of the masses and their record of struggle. As such, it needed to appreciate the economic realities, the social contexts and power relations in which each epoch stood. For: “Men make their own history, but they do not make it just as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circumstances directly found, given and transmitted from the past. ”This was the tradition which revolutionized our appreciation of the past. In place of Thomas Carlyle, Britain nurtured Christopher Hill, EP Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm. History from below stood alongside biographies of great men. Translate it into Chinese, write your translation on ANSWER SHEET 2. (15points)When people in developing countries worry about migration, they are usually concerned at the prospect of the best and brightest departure to Silicon Valley or to hospitals and universities in the developed world. These are the kind of workers that countries like Britain, Canada and Australia try to attract by using immigration rules that privilege college graduates.Lots of studies have found that well-educated people from developing countries are particularly likely to emigrate. A big survey of Indian households in 2004 found that nearly 40% of emigrants had more than a high-school education, compared with around 3.3% of all Indians over the age of 25. This "brain drain" has long bothered policymakers in poor countries. They fear that it hurts their economies, depriving them of much-needed skilled workers who could have taught at their universities, worked in their hospitals and come up with clever new products for their factories to make.Section IV WritingPart A47.Directions:Suppose you have found something wrong with the electronic dictionary that you bought from an online store the other day, write an email to the customer service center to1) make a complaint and2) demand a prompt solutionYou should write about 100words on ANSERE SHEET 2.Do not sign your own name at the end of the letter, Use "Zhang Wei "instead.Part B 48.Directions:Write an essay based on the following table In your writing, you should1) describe the table, and2) give your commYou should write at least 150 words. Green building can also refer to environmentally friendly houses, factories, and offices. Buildings account for 65 percent of total U.S. electricity use. But green buildings can reduce energy and water use. Also, the buildings are often located near public transportation such as buses and subways, so that people can drive their cars less. That could be good for the environment, because cars use lots of natural resources such as gasoline, and give off pollution. Green buildings are often built on previously developed land, so that the buildings don"t destroy forests or other wild habitats(栖息地). Malty Dettling is a project manager for a building that puts these ideas into action. The Solaire has been called the country"s first green residential high-rise building. According to Dettling, "We"ve reduced our energy consumption by one-third and our water by 50 percent". Not everyone is leaping to move into a green building, however. Some people think that features such as solar panels cost more money than more traditional energy sources. Despite this, Dettling hopes that green buildings will become common in the future. "It"s going to be big", she said.第11题What does green building refer to nowadays?A.Buildings painted by green hands.B.Buildings covered with green plants.C.Buildings that are environmentally-friendly.D.Buildings like houses, factories, and offices.第12题The word "Also"(Line 2, Para. 2) is used to ______.A.continue the discussion of total U.S. electricity useB.expand the topic of reduction of energy and water useC.include the discussion of public transportationD.shift the focus to the topic of the environment protection第13题In terms of land use, green buildings are constructed by ______.A.making use of developed landB.developing new landC.clearing the ground in a forestD.draining wild habitats第14题Why are some people not so enthusiastic about green buildings?A.Because they do not jump into green building.B.Because they fail to move into a green building.C.Because they find it more costly to live in a green building.D.Because they think that solar panels still cost too much.第15题What did Marty Dettling mean when she said, "It"s going to be big?"A.Green buildings have a great potential.B.People expect bigger green buildings.C.Green buildings will be larger in size.D.People prefer to live in bigger buildings.上一题下一题Theme-park-bound bargain seekers would be wise to spend some time surfing online before they get in line at the parks this summer. A growing number of these attractions now allow customers to print e-tickets at home with large discounts off the gate price, in part to spur attendance that has declined in recent years. After boom times in the late 1990s, theme park attendance began to decrease, with an overall decline of about 40% over the past few years at North America"s 50 most-visited establishments, says James Zoitak, editor of Amusement Business. "The boom was off the rose as we turned the comer into 2000, so there"s more discounting now", he says. Discounting isn"t new to an industry that has longer partnered with other commercial enterprises, such as soft drink companies, to offer deals. But e-ticketing adds a new opportunity that not only brings savings but convenience as well, since it allows visitors to avoid the line at the gate. "If you can get in early before the lines fill up, you"re getting more for your money", says Robert Niles of the website Theme Park Insider.第16题The word "attractions"(Line 1, Para. 2) refers to ______.A.theme parksB.bargainsC.e-ticketsD.discounts第17题Why do more and more theme parks offer large discounts off the gate price?A.To get in line at the parks this summer.B.To encourage more people to come to the parks.C.To enable people to get e-tickets at home.D.To reduce the attendance figure.第18题What does the sentence "The boom was off the rose" mean?A.The rose in the theme park was out of bloom.B.The year 2000 was lucky for the 50 establishments.C.The theme park attendance was like the rose.D.The best time for the theme parks was gone.第19题What is the new opportunity e-ticketing brings to the theme parks?A.The theme park industry will be more profitable.B.Soft drink companies will be better partners of the parks.C.The tour to the parks will be more convenient.D.Visitors to the parks will have more discounts.第20题The last sentence of this passage is based on the idea that ______.A.it is wise to surf onlineB.discounting isn"t everythingC.e-ticketing attracts more partnersD.time is money上一题下一题One thing almost everyone is agreed on, including Americans, is that they place a very high valuation upon success; Success does not necessarily mean material rewards, but recognition of some sort-preferably measurable. 工程硕士(GCT)英语-71(总分100, 做题时间90分钟)阅读理解题Directions(答题指令):In this part there are three passages and one advertisement, each followed questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line though the center. Passage 1In a global survey released in 2012, half the responders admitted to buying things they really did not need. Two thirds are worried that consumers are buying too much. Such concerns may be justified. Many consumers have become trapped in debt.Researchers say that instead of making us more satisfied, high levels of consumption may lead to greater stress and unhappiness! As consumers, we are subjected to a great amount of marketing. Whatis the goal of marketers? To turn wants into needs. Marketers know that consumer behavior is driven largely by emotion. So advertisements and the shopping experience itself are designed for maximum emotional appeal. When you ask a consumer: Why do you buy so much? He or she may answer: I want to improve my quality of life. It is natural that people want a better life. Advertisers bombard us with messages that all of our desires—better health, security, relief from stress, and closer relationships—can be achieved by making the right purchases. But actually, as our number of possessions increases, our quality of life can actually decrease. Additional time and money are needed to care for more material things. Stress levels rise because of pressure from debt, and there is less time for family and friends. So you should protect yourself from becoming a victim of clever marketers. You should put emotion aside, **pare marketing promises with reality.SSS_SINGLE_SEL1.The first paragraph tells us that ______.A half the things people buy are not neededB most consumers are trapped in debtC excessive buying is commonD consumption brings satisfactionSSS_SINGLE_SEL2.According to the author, the goal of marketers is to ______.A turn the consumers" desires into consumptionsB carefully study the Consumers" emotionC make sure the consumers" needs are metD make more money by cheatingSSS_SINGLE_SEL3.Many consumers are buying too much, because ______.A they don"t know what they really needB they want to stay in fashionC they enjoy the shopping experiencesD they tend to be attracted by adsSSS_SINGLE_SEL4.The word "bombard" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to "______".A breakB attackC convinceD superviseSSS_SINGLE_SEL5.The purpose of the author in writing this article is to ______.A reveal marketing tricksB explain the working theory of adsC advise people against over spendingD analyze consumer behavior Passage 2Marital Status in the UK in 1991 and 2011Marital StatusPercentage in1991 Percentage in 2011 Male FemaleMale Female Single24 19 34 26 Married71 65 54 52 Widowed4 15 4 13 Divorced1 18 9 SSS_SINGLE_SEL 1.Which marital status shows the least difference between males and females?A Divorced.B Widowed.C Married.D Single.SSS_SINGLE_SEL2.Which of the following had the highest marriage rate?A Males in 1991.B Females in 1991.C Males in 2011.D Females in 2011.SSS_SINGLE_SEL3.The percentage of females out of marriage in 2011 was ______.A 26B 34C 35D 48SSS_SINGLE_SEL4.Which group showed the greatest change over the 20 years?A Single men.B Single women.C Married men.D Married women.SSS_SINGLE_SEL5.What characteristic can be found from the table?A Most people chose to get married in both years.B Unmarried population increased obviously in both sexes.C More females than males got divorced in both years.D More males stayed single in 1991 than in 2011.Passage 3Ever won the lottery? No? But did that stop you buying another lottery ticket? If the answer is another "no", you might call yourself an optimist.According to researchers at University College London, human beings are sanguine creatures. It is all in the brain, they say. A study suggests that human brain is very efficient at processing good news: about 80% of people have a tendency to see the glass as half-full, not half-empty, even if they don"t consider themselves to be optimists. The good news is that this brings a health benefit. Having a positive outlook on life reduces anxiety. A study of nearly 100,000 women showed a lower risk of death from heart disease among optimists. But there are problems in always having an optimistic attitude. The authors of the study point out that the 2008 financial crisis may have been caused by analysts overestimating their assets" performance even in the face of clear evidence to the contrary. There are personal health risks too. Dr Tali Sharot, lead researcher, said: ""Smoking Kills" messages don"t work since people think their chances of cancer are low. There"s a very fundamental tendency in the brain."But, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining. Even if seeing the world through rose-colored glasses poses a risk to our health, it"s not something that is likely to cause us to lose sleep. The IOC met at an emergency session on Saturday to look into a pile of evidence uncovered by Britain"s Sunday Times newspaper. The paper claims that high-ranking Olympic officials have been selling tickets for the games at hugely inflated prices. The highest priced tickets on the black market were for the men"s 100- meter final. The IOC has issued a statement saying it "takes these allegations very seriously and has immediately taken the first steps to investigate."IOC rules forbid national **mittees from selling tickets overseas, increasing ticket prices or selling tickets to unauthorized, third-party resellers. Despite this, Sunday Times undercover reporters posing as illegal ticket sellers say they have recorded evidence of 27 officials selling tickets distributed to 54 countries. One of the most serious allegations was against the Greek Olympic Committee president Spyros Capralos. He denies saying he had "pulled strings" with the head of the London Olympics Sebastian Coe even though the paper posted videos of its reporters" negotiations with Capralos on its website. Answers are studied by Google"s mathematicians tocalculate a score meant to predict how well a person will fit into the organization"s diversified **petitive culture.Psychometric tests (心理测试) are already used by more **panies to select workers, but they are unheard of in a company like Google, which is built on a belief in individual talent. The online questionnaire is based on the answers to 300 questions sent out last summer to every employee at the head office in California"s Silicon Valley. Some questions were factual: What programming languages are you familiar with? What internet mailing lists are you on?Other questions, however, tried to establish personality and behavioural characteristics: Have you ever tutored another person? For each of them, there are four suggested answers. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET by drawing with a pencil a short bar across the corresponding letter in the brackets.11-15It is hard to track the blue whale, the ocean's largest creature, which has almost been killed off by commercial whaling and is now listed as an endangered species. Attaching radio devices to it is difficult, and visual sightings are too unreliable to give real insight into its behavior. So biologists were delighted early this year when with the help of the Navy they were able to track a particular blue whale for 33 days monitoring its sounds. This was possible because of the Navy's formerly top-secret system of underwater listening devices spanning the oceans.Tracking whales is but one example of an exciting new world just opening to civilian scientists after the cold war as the Navy starts to share and partly uncover its global network of underwaterlistening system built over the decades to track the ships of potential enemies.Earth scientists announced at a news conference recently that they had used the system for closely monitoring a deep-sea volcanic eruption (爆发) for the first time and that they plan similar studies. Other scientists have proposed to use the network fortracking ocean currents and measuring changes in ocean and global temperatures. The speed of sound in water is roughly one mile a second--slower than through land but faster than through air. What is most important, different layers of ocean water can act as channels for sounds, focusing them in the same way a stethoscope (听诊器)does when it carries faint noises from a patient's chest to a doctor's ear. This focusing is the main reason that even relatively weak sounds in the ocean, especially low-frequency ones, can often travel thousands of miles.SSS_SINGLE_SEL1.The passage is chiefly about ______.A an effort to protect an endangered marine speciesB the civilian use of a military detection systemC the exposure of a U.S. Navy top-secret weaponD a new way to look into the behavior of blue whalesSSS_SINGLE_SEL2.The underwater listening system was originally designed ______.A to trace and locate enemy vesselsB to monitor deep-sea volcanic eruptionsC to study the movement of ocean currentsD to replace the global **munications networkSSS_SINGLE_SEL3.The deep-sea listening system makes use of ______.A the sophisticated technology of focusing sounds under waterB the capability of sound to travel at high speedC the unique property of layers of ocean water in transmitting soundD low-frequency sounds travelling across different layers of waterSSS_SINGLE_SEL4.It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A new radio devices should be developed for tracking the endangered blue whalesB blue whales are no longer endangered with the use of the new listening systemC opinions differ as to whether civilian scientists should be allowed to use military technologyD military technology has great potential in civilian useSSS_SINGLE_SEL5.Which of the following is true about the U.S. Navy underwater listening network?A It is now partly accessible to civilian scientists.B It has been replaced by a more advanced system.C It became useless to the military after the cold war.D It is indispensable in protecting endangered species.16-20President Coolidge's statement, "The business of America is business," still points to an important truth today-- that business institutions have more prestige (威望) in American society than any other kind of organization, including the government. Why do business institutions possess this great prestige? One reason is that Americans view business as being more firmly based on the ideal of competition than other institutions in society. **petition is seen as the major source of progress and prosperity by most Americans, competitive business institutions are respected. Competition is not only good in itself, it is the means by which other basic American values such as individual freedom, equality of opportunity, and hard work are protected.Competition protects the freedom of the individual by ensuring that there is no monopoly (垄断) of power. In contrast to one, all-powerful government, many **pete against each other for profits. Theoretically, if one business tries to take unfair advantage of its customers, it will lose to competing business which treats its customers more fairly. Where many **pete for the customers' dollar, they cannot afford to treat them like inferiors or slaves.A contrast is often made between business, which is competitive, and government, which is a monopoly. Because business is competitive, many Americans believe that it is more supportive of freedom than government, even though government leaders are elected by the people and business leaders are not. Many Americans believe, then,**petition is as important, or even more important, than democracy in preserving freedom.Competition in business is also believed to strengthen the idealof equality of opportunity.Competition is seen as an open and fair race where success goes to the swiftest person regardless of his or her social class background. Competitive success is commonly seen as the American alternative to social rank based on family background. Business is therefore viewed as an expression of the idea of equality of opportunity rather than the aristocratic (贵族的) idea of inherited privilege.SSS_SINGLE_SEL6.The statement "The business of America is business" probably means ______.A The business institutions in America are concerned withB Business problems are of great importance to the American governmentC Business is of primary concern to AmericansD America is a great power in world businessSSS_SINGLE_SEL7.Americans believe that they can realize their personal values only ______.A when given equality of opportunityB through doing businessC by protecting their individual freedomD by way of competitionSSS_SINGLE_SEL8.Who can benefit from **petition?A Honest businessmenB Both businessmen and their customersC People with ideals of equality and freedomD Both business institutions and governmentSSS_SINGLE_SEL9.Government is believed to differ strikingly from business in that government is characterized by ______.A its absolute control of powerB its function in preserving personal freedomC its role in protecting basic American valuesD its democratic way of exercising leadershipSSS_SINGLE_SEL10.It can be inferred from the passage that the author believes ______.A Americans are more ambitious than people in other countriesB in many countries success often depends on one's social statusC American businesses are more democratic than those in other countriesD businesses in other countries are not as competitive as those in America21-25Not too many decades ago it seemed "obvious" both to the general public and to sociologists that modern society has changed people's natural relations, loosened their responsibilities to kin (亲戚) and neighbors, and substituted in their place superficial relationships with passing acquaintances. However, in recent years a growing body of research has revealed that the "obviousness" is not true. It seems that if you are a city resident, you typically know a smaller proportion of your neighbors than you do if you are a resident of a **munity. But, for the most part, this fact has few significant consequences. It does not necessarily follow that if you know few of your neighbors you will know no one else.Even in very large cities, people maintain close social ties within small, private social worlds. Indeed, the number and quality of meaningful relationships do not differ between more and less urban people. Small-town residents are more involved with kin than big-city residents. Yet city **pensate by developing friendships with people who share similar interests and activities. Urbanism may produce a different style of life, but the quality of life does not differ between town and city. Nor are residents of **munities any likelier to display psychological symptoms of stress or alienation, a feeling of not belonging, than are residents of **munities. However, city dwellers do worry more about crime, and this leads them to a distrust of strangers. These findings do not imply that urbanism makes little or no difference. If neighbors are strangers to one another, they are less likely to sweep the sidewalk of an elderly couple living next door or keep an eye out for young troublemakers. Moreover, as Wirth suggested, there may be a link between a community's population size and its social heterogeneity (多样性). For instance, sociologists have found that the size of a community is associated with bad behavior including gambling, drugs, etc. Large-city urbanites arealso more likely than their small-town counterparts to have a cosmopolitan (见多识广者的) outlook, to display less responsibility to traditional kinship roles, to vote for leftist political candidates, and to be tolerant of nontraditional religious groups, unpopular political groups, and so-called undesirables. Everything considered, heterogeneity and unusual behavior seem to be outcomes of large population size.SSS_SINGLE_SEL11.Which of the following statements best describes the organization of the first paragraph?A Two contrasting views are presented.B An argument is examined and possible solutions given.C Research results concerning the quality of urban life are presented in order of time.D A detailed description of the difference between urban and small-town life is given.SSS_SINGLE_SEL12.According to the passage, it was once a common belief that urban residents ______.A did not have the same interests as their neighborsB could not develop lone-standing relationshipsC tended to be associated with bad behaviorD usually had more friendsSSS_SINGLE_SEL13.One of the consequences of urban life is that impersonalrelationships among neighbors ______.A disrupt people's natural relationsB make them worry about crimeC cause them not to show concern for one anotherD cause them to be suspicious of each otherSSS_SINGLE_SEL14.It can be inferred from the passage that the bigger a community is, ______.A the better its quality of lifeB the more similar its interestsC the more tolerant and open-minded it isD the likelier it is to display psychological symptoms of stressSSS_SINGLE_SEL15.What is the passage mainly about?A Similarities in the interpersonal relationships between urbanites and small-town dwellers.B Advantages of living in big cities as compared with living in small towns.C The positive role that urbanism plays in modem life.D The strong feeling of alienation of city inhabitants.26-30According to a survey, which was based on the responses of over188,000 students, today's traditional-age college freshmen are "more materialistic and less altruistic (利他主义的)" than at any time in the 17 years of the poll. Not surprising in these hard times, the student's majorobjective "is to be financially well off. Less important than ever is developing a meaningful philosophy of life". It follows then that today the most popular course is not literature or history but accounting.Interest in teaching, social service and the "altruistic" fields is at a low. On the other hand, enrollment in business programs, engineering **puter science is way up.That's no surprise either. A friend of mine (a sales representative for a **pany) was making twice the salary of her college instructors her first year on the job-- even before **pleted her two-year associate degree. While it's true that we all need a career, it is equally true that our civilization has accumulated an incredible amount of knowledge in fields far removed from our own and that we are better for our understanding of these other contributions--be theyscientific or artistic. It is equally true that, in studying the diverse wisdom of others, we learn how to think. More important, perhaps, education teaches us to see the connections between things, as well as to see beyond our immediate needs.Weekly we read of unions who went on strike for higher wages, only to drive their employer out of business. No company; no job. How shortsighted in the long run!But the most important argument for a broad education is that in studying the accumulated wisdom of the ages, we improve our moral sense. I saw a cartoon recently which shows a group of businessmenlooking puzzled as they sit around a conference table; one of them is talking on the ** (对讲机): "Miss Baxter," he says, "could you please send in someone who can distinguish right from wrong?"From the long-term point of view, that's what education really ought to be about.SSS_SINGLE_SEL16.According to the author's observation, college students ______.A have never been so materialistic as todayB have never been so interested in the artsC have never been so financially well off as todayD have never attached so much importance to mutual senseSSS_SINGLE_SEL17.The students' criteria for selecting majors today have much to do with ______.A the influences of their instructorsB the financial goals they seek in lifeC their own interpretations of the coursesD their understanding of the contributions of othersSSS_SINGLE_SEL18.By saying "While it's true that..., be they scientific or artistic" (Lines 1-3, ParA 5) the author means that ______.A. business management should be included in educational programsB. human wisdom has accumulated at an extraordinarily high speedC. human intellectual development has reached new heightsD. the importance of a broad education should not be overlookedSSS_SINGLE_SEL19.Studying the diverse wisdom of others can ______A create varying artistic interestsB help people see things in their right perspectiveC help improve connections among peopleD regulate the behavior of modern peopleSSS_SINGLE_SEL20.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A Businessmen absorbed in their career are narrow-minded.B Managers often find it hard to tell right from wrong.C People engaged in technical jobs lead a more rewarding life.D Career seekers should not focus on immediate interests only. For each of them, there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line though the center. If someone asked you. "What color is the sky?" I expect that you would answer, "Blue. " I am afraid that you would be wrong. The sky has no color. When we see blue, we are looking at blue sunlight. The sunlight is shining on little bits of dust in the air.We know that there is air all around the world. We could not breathe without air. Airplanes could not fly without air. They need air to lift their wings. Airplanes cannot fly very high because as they go higher the air gets thinner. If we go far enough away from the earth, we find there is no air. What is the sky? The sky is space. In this space there is nothing except the sun, the moon andall the stars.Scientists have always wanted to know more about the other worlds in the space. They have looked at them through telescopes and in this way they have found out a great deal. The moon is about 384, 000 kilometers away from the earth. An airplane cannot fly to the moon but there is a thing that can fly even when there is no air. This is rocket.I am sure that you are asking. "How does a rocket fly? " If you want to know, get a balloon and then blow it up until it is quite big. Do not tie up the neck of the balloon. Let go ! The balloon will fly off through the air very quickly. The air inside the balloontries to get out. It rushes out through neck of the ball and this pushes the balloon through the air. It does not need wings like anair plane. This is how a rocket works. It is not made of rubber like a balloon, of course. It is made of metal. The metal must not be heavy but it must be very strong. There is gas inside the rocket which is made very hot. When it rushes out of the end of the rocket, the rocket is pushed up into the air.Rockets can fly far out into space. Rockets with men inside them have already reached the moon. Several rockets, without men inside them, have been sent to other worlds much farther away. One day rockets may be able to go anywhere in the space.SSS_SIMPLE_SIN11.What color is the sky?• A. One-room schools are an endangered species, however. For more than a hundred years, one-room schools have been systematically shut down and their students sent away to centralized schools. As recently as 1930 there were 149, 000 one-room schools in the United States. By 1970 there were 1,800. Today, of nearly 800 remaining one-room schools more than 350 are in Nebraska. The rest are scattered through a few other states that have on their road maps wide-open spaces between towns. Now that there are hardly any left, educators are beginning to think that maybe there is some-thing yet to be learned from one-room schools, something that served the pioneers that might serve as well today. Progressive educators **e up with progressive-sounding names like "peer-group teaching" and "multi-age grouping" for educationalprocedures that occur naturally in the one-room schools. In a one-room school the children teach each other because the teacher is busy part of the time teaching someone else. A fourth grader can work at a fifth-grade level in math and a third-grade level in English without the stigma associated with being left back or the pressures of being skipped ahead. A youngster with a learning disability can find his or her own level without being separated from the other pupils. Inlarger urban and suburban schools today, this is called "mainstreaming. If you are saving to buy a dictionary or to go to a concert, then probably keep your money somewhere in your room.If you are saving for a big purchase like a mountain bike or a school trip, where would you save your money? One place to save money is the bank. Putting your money in a savings account will help your money earn more money. If you put your money in a piggy bank (猪形储蓄罐), one year later you'll still have the same amount of money you put in. If you put your money in a savings account, one year later, you'll have more money than you put in. Why?When you keep your money in a bank, your money earns interest. Interest is the amount of money a bank pays you to use your money. The bank uses your money ( and the money of other people, too) to loan money to people and businesses. The bank will send you a statement several times a year. A bank statement tells you how much money there is in your account, It also tells you how much interest you have earned, ff you leave your money in the bank, you can watch it grow!Another way you can save money is to buy a certificate of deposit or CD. If you have some money that you don't need to use for a long time, this is a good way to make your money grow. You can buy a CD at a bank. You agree not to use the money for a certain period of time. That period might be from six months tofive years. You can't touch your money during that time. ff you do, you must pay a penalty, or fee.Since the bank is using your money for that time period, it will pay you interest. You will earn more interest with a CD than in a savings account. Can you guess why? It's because you promise to leave your money in the bank for a certain period of time. Banks pay different rates of interest. So, you may want to compare rates in newspaper ads before buying a CD.SSS_SIMPLE_SIN21.Which way will help your money earn more money?• A. Passage One In ancient Greek, the term euthanatos meant“easy death”. Today euthanasia (安乐死) generally refers to mercy killing, the voluntary (⾃愿) ending of the life of someone who is terminally ill. Like abortion, euthanasia has become a legal, medical, and moral issue over which opinion is divided. Euthanasia can be either active or passive. Active euthanasia means that a physician or other medical personnel takes an action that will result in death, such as giving an overdose of deadly medicine. Passive euthanasia means letting a patient die for lack of treatment, or stopping the treatment that has begun. Examples of passive euthanasia include taking patients off a breathing machine or removing other life-support systems. Stopping the food supply is also considered passive. A good deal of the debate about mercy killing originates from the decision-making process. Who decides whether a patient is to die? This issue has not been solved legally in the United States. The matter is left to state law, which usually allows the physician in charge to suggest the option of death to a patient’s relatives, especially if the patient is brain dead. In an attempt to make decisions about when their own lives should end, several terminally ill patients in the early 1990s used a controversial suicide device, developed by Dr. Jack Kevorkian, to end their lives. In parts of Europe, the decision-making process has become very flexible. Even in cases where the patients are not brain dead, patients have been put to death without their approval at the request of relatives or at the suggestion of physicians. Many cases of passive euthanasia involve old people or newborn infants. The principle justifying this practice is that such individuals have a “life not worthy of life”. In countries where passive euthanasia is not legal, the court systems have proved very tolerant in dealing with medical personnel who practice it. In Japan, for example, if physicians follow certain guidelines they may actively carry out mercy killings on hopelessly ill people. Courts have also been somewhat tolerant of friends or relatives who have assisted terminally ill patients to die. 1. A terminally ill patient is one who . A. gets worse every day . B. can never get well againC. is very seriously ill in the endD. is too ill to want to live on 2. The difference between active and passive euthanasia is whether . A. there is an action that speeds up the death of the patient B. the breathing machine is taken off the patient C. an overdose of deadly medicine is used D. the patient is denied food supply 3. According to the passage, who has/have the legal responsibility to decide on euthanasia? A. The national or state government. B. The patient’s relatives. C. Physicians in charge of the patient. D. The answer varies from country to country. 4. The principle justifying passive euthanasia in Europe is that terminally ill patients are . A. living a life without consciousness B. living a life that can hardly be called life C. too old or too weak to live on D. too old or too young to approve of euthanasia 5. The attitude of the writer toward euthanasia is . A. negative B. positive C. objective D. casual Passage Two Next week, as millions of families gather for their Thanksgiving (感恩节) feasts, many other Americans will go without. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, more than 12 million households lack enough food for everyone in their family at some time during the year—including holidays. Hunger is surprisingly widespread in our country—one of the world’s wealthiest—yet the government estimates that we waste almost 100 billion pounds of food each year, more than one-quarter of our total supply. Reducing this improper distribution of resources is a goal of America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Last year, it distributed nearly 2 billion pounds of food to more than 23 million people in need. America’s Second Harvest is a network of 214 inter-connected food banks and other organizations that gather food from growers, processors, grocery stores and restaurants. In turn, the network distributes food to some 50,000 soup kitchens, homeless shelters and old people’s centers in every county of every state. A great deal of work is involved in distributing tons of food from thousands of donors (捐赠者) to hundreds of small, nonprofit organizations. Until a few years ago, America’s Second Harvest lacked any effective way to manage their inventory. Without accurate and timely information, soup kitchens were sometimes empty while food was left to spoil in loading places. In 2000, America’s Second Harvest began to use a new inventory and financial-management system—Ceres. It is software designed specifically for hunger-relief operations. It is used by more than 100 America’s Second Harvest organizations to track food from donation to distribution. Ceres has helped reduce the spoiling of food and improve distribution. An evaluation found that the software streamlined food banks’ operations by 23 percent in the first year alone. With more accurate and timely reports, Ceres saves time, flees staff members to focus on finding new donors, and promises more efficient use of donations. Hunger in America remains a troubling social problem. Technology alone cannot solve it. But in the hands of organizations such as America’s Second Harvest, it is a powerful tool that is helping to make a difference—and helping more Americans to join in the feast. 6. According to the passage, the total supply of food in America every year reaches . A. 12 million pounds B. more than 12 million pounds C. almost 100 billion pounds D. about 400 billion pounds 7. By“this improper distribution of resources”in Paragraph 3, the writer means that many .Americans lack enough food while. A. their country is one of the richest in the world B. much food is left to spoil C. others waste too much food D. others consume too much food 8. A problem for America’s Second Harvest a few years ago was that . A. it did not get enough food from donors B. it did not have a large enough network C. it did not have enough soup kitchens D. it did not have a good way to manage its food stock 9. With Ceres, America’s Second Harvest is now able to . A. enlarge its network B. prevent food from spoiling C. give out food more efficiently D. solve the hunger problem in the country 10. The main idea of the passage is that . A. technology can help in the fight against hunger B. America’s Second Harvest has found more donors C. America’s Second Harvest promotes the development of technology D. hunger is a problem even in the wealthiest country in the world Passage Three The differences in living standards around the world are vast. In 1993, the average American had an income of about $25,000. In the same year, the average Mexican earned $7,000, and the average Nigerian earned $1,500. Not surprisingly, this large variation in average income is reflected in various measures of the quality of life. Changes in living standards over time are also large. In the United States, incomes have historically grown about 2 percent per year (after adjusting for changes in the cost of living). At this rate, average income doubles every 35 years. In some countries, economic growth has been even more rapid. In Japan, for instance, average income has doubled in the past 20 years, and in South Korea it has doubled in the past 10 years. What explains these large differences in living standards among countries and over time? The answer is surprisingly simple. Almost all variation in living standards is attributable to differences in countries’ productivity—that is, the amount ofgoods and services produced from each hour of a worker’s time. In nations where workers can produce a large quantity of goods and services per unit of time, most people enjoy a high standard of living; in nations where workers are less productive, most people must endure a more meager existence. Similarly, the growth rate of a nation’s productivity determines the growth rate of its average income. The fundamental relationship between productivity and living standards is simple, but its implications are far-reaching. If productivity is the primary determinant of living standards, other explanations must be of secondary importance. For example, people might think that labor unions or minimum-wage laws contributed to the rise in living standards of American workers over the past century. Yet the real hero of American workers is their rising productivity. The relationship between productivity and living standards also has great implications for public policy. When thinking about how any policy will affect living standards, the key question is how it will affect our ability to produce goods and services. To improve living standards, policymakers need to raise productivity by ensuring that workers are well educated, have the tools needed to produce goods and services, and have access to the best available technology. 11. Which of the following countries has enjoyed the fastest economic growth in history? A. Mexico. B. The United States. C. Japan. D. South Korea. 12. The word “meager” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to“ ” A. modest B. poor C. meaningless D. plentiful 13. What is the most important factor that leads to the rise in living standards of average people? A. Labor unions. B. Minimum-wage laws. C. Rising productivity. D. Favorable public policy. 14. The study of the relationship between productivity and living standards is significant in that . A. it calls policymakers’ attention to a qualified work force B. it encourages workers to get better education C. it helps improve the workers’ ability to produce goods and services D. it enables policymakers to access the latest technology 15. The passage mainly discusses . A. the differences in average income among countries B. the relationship between productivity and living standards C. the causes of the rise in living standards D. the importance of raising productivity。

工程硕士(GCT)英语真题2012年
Part ⅠVocabulary and Structure
Directions: There are ten incomplete sentences in this part For each sentence there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that best completes the sentence. Mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.
1. I realized I had let myself in something from which there was no turning ______.
A.around
B.back
C.away
D.down.
答案:B
句意为:我意识到自己深陷没有退路的局面里了。
本题是对词组的考查。
Turnaround“扭转”,turn back “回身”,turn away“移开,脱身”,turn down“拒绝”。
根据题意,本题选B。
2. You are to stay at the hotel where rooms ______ for you.
A.have been booked
B.are booked
C.would be booked
D.were booked.
答案:A
句意为:你要待在为你订好的房间里。
本题考查的语法是主句谓语动词为一般现在时表示将来(be to do表示“将要”),定语从句要用过去或者现在的时态维持时态一致,根据句意,现在完成时强调结果,故A最合适。
3. If you ______ to my advice, you wouldn't be in this mess right now.
A.listen
B.listened
C.had listened
D.would listen
4. Those close to him are ______ that he hopes to stay on till the end of his term.
A.ensured
B.confirmed
C.supposed
D.convinced
5. Working women haven't left the family role behind: now they are ______ to work even harder to do both.
A.expected
B.wished
C.hoped
D.desired
答案:A
句意为:职业女性的家庭角色没有被放置一边:现在她们又被指望着更努力地工作来扮演好双重角色。
本题考查词汇。
be expected to do是个固定搭配,意思是“被指望,预期”的意思。
故本题选A。
6. Modern technology has brought ______ communication between people far apart.
petent
B.convenient
C.conscious
plete
答案:B
句意为:现代科技为身处异地的人带来便捷的沟通。
本题考查词汇competent“胜任的”,convenient “便捷的,方便的”,conscious“有意识的”,complete“完整的”。
根据题意,本题选B。
7. Under no ______ are children allowed to tell lies to their parents.
A.circumstances
B.situations
C.occasions
D.moments
答案:A
句意为:在任何条件下,都不允许孩子们对家长撒谎。
此题考查固定搭配。
此句为倒装句,能引导倒装句的词组为under no circumstances,意思是“在任何情况下都不”,与in no way/by no means含义和用法相似。
故本题选A。
8. We need a more capable leader, ______ with a strong will as well as good humor.
A.who
B.that
C.one
D.which
