As people slowly learn to cure diseases, control floods, prevent hunger, and stop wars, fewer people die every year. As a result , the population of the world is becoming larger. In 1925 there w ere about 2 billion people in the world; today there are over 6 bil
lion.
When the number rises, extra mouths must be fed. New lands must be brought under development, or land already farmed m ust be made to produce more crops. In some areas the land is so over-
developed that it will be difficult to make it provide more crops. I n some areas the population is so large that the land is divided i nto too tiny units to make improvement possible with farming m ethods. If a large part of this farming population went into indust rial work, the land might be farmed much more productively wit h modern methods.
There is now a race for science, technology, and industry to ke ep the output of food rising faster than the number of people to be fed. New types of crops, which will grow well in bad weather, are being developed, so there are now farms beyond the Arctic Circle in Siberia and North America. Irrigation and dry-farming methods bring poor lands under the plough. Dams hold back the waters of great rivers, which can provide water for the fields in all seasons and provide electric power for new industri es. Industrial chemistry provides fertilizer to suit different soils. Every year, some new methods are made to increase or to prot ect the food of the world.

It’s holiday time now and people often eat more during the holid ays. At the same time they are worried about putting on weight, but with the right strategies, you certainly can have your cake a nd eat it.
Andy Bellatti, a nutrition graduate student at , has some tips for
surviving in the eating season and keeping your body in shape.
First, instead of trying to “save up” your calories during the day by avoiding food before an event, have a small filling snack, on e with fiber and protein, before going out. Bellatti suggests nuts or cereal. If you’re not starving when you arrive, he explains, yo u’ll have better control when you do hit the food table. Besides, it’s never a good idea to drink on an empty stomach.
If you’re hosting a holiday event, try to be realistic about how m uch food you really need for the number of guests you have. If y ou do have snacks that have not been eaten at the end of the p arty, try sending some home with your guests, particularly if you know the foods are problematic for you. And remember that th ere will certainly be some treats left for tomorrow, which means you don’t have to eat them all at once.
Most of all, Bellatti says, it’s important not to get too caught up i n the details. If your diet is good on the whole, a few treats — w hether during the holidays or the rest of the year — are okay. “A s long as your overall diet patterns are fine and healthy,” he say s, “having a donut is not going to be the end of you.”
72. The author develops the third and fourth paragraphs with __ ___________.
A. comparison
B. examples
C. description
D. arguments
73. The underlined word “problematic” in the fourth paragraph p robably means ________.
A. attractive
B. affordable
C. doubtful
D. troublesome
74. According to the passage, which of the following is good for keeping in shape?
A. Not having a filling snack before going out to a party.
B. Giving leftover snacks to your guests at the end of a party.
C. Eating leftover snacks from your party all at once.
D. Strictly keeping to your daily diet.
75. This passage is probably from _______.
A. the lifestyle column of a newspaper
B. a travel mag azine
C. an advertisement for keeping in shape
D. a special report on health
