M: May I have a look? Hmm…it says it was checked out on register four---that’s Heather. She is new on staff, so she probably didn’t know about the sale. I’m very sorry about that. I’ll fix the problem right away and get you some cash.

Text 10
My way to stay young is simple: Give full attention to the part of you that’s young and growing---your brain. Keep your mind active and your body will stay young, too. These are exciting times. Take an interest in the world around you, and make a point of learning one new thing every day.
Never think about your age, it’s not too late to make your life more interesting. I know a house wife who became a famous industrial designer; I know a retired electrical engineer who has become a highly paid artist.
Get over the idea that you are too old to go back to college. I know I man who entered medical school at 70. He got his degree with honors and became a top doctor. Another man went to law school at 71 and is now an active lawyer.
Even if you are getting on in years, staying young is easy for those who live for the future. You can do it if you care enough to try. Keep your mind alive and active; this is the key to staying young, and it will certainly work.

"Did you hear what happened to Adam last Friday?" Lindsey whispers to Tori.
With her eyes shining, Tori brags, "You bet I did, Sean told me two days ago."
Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happened to be yours truly, Adam Freedman, I can tell you that what they are saying is (a)not nice and (b)not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori aren't very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip (闲话).I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people, it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group.
An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic—breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out—that a person would rather keep secret.
The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.
If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor (传言)can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the "in group". In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority (优越感).
Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The do's and don'ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.
The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your "juicy story" might have.
24. The author uses a conversation at the beginning of the passage to _________.
A. introduce a topic
B. present an argument
C. describe the characters
D. clarify his writing purpose

【答案】A

根据第一和第二段“"Did you hear what happened to Adam last Friday?" Lindsey whispers to Tori. With her eyes shining, Tori brags, "You bet I did, Sean told me two days ago."”

根据第三段中的“Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happ ened to be yours truly, Adam Freedman, I can tell you that what they are saying is not nice and not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori aren't very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip (闲话). ”可知,说闲话这种事几乎人人都会做。

根据“I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people, it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group. ”可知,下文主要叙述“说闲话”的三个影响。

由此推知,文章开头引用两人的交谈是为了引出“说闲话”这个话题。

故选A。

25. An important negative effect of gossip is that it ___________.
A. breaks up relationships
B. embarrasses the listener
C. spreads information around
D. causes unpleasant experiences

根据第四段中的“An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt t he person being talked about”可知,说闲话的一个重要的负面影响是它会伤害被谈论的人。

26. Professor David Wilson thinks that gossip can ____________.
A. provide students with written rules
B. help people watch their own behaviors
C. force school to improve student handbooks
D. attract the police's attention to group behaviors

根据倒数第二段中的“Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of ne gative attention.”

27. What advice does the author give in the passage?
A. Never become a gossiper
B. Stay away from gossipers
C. Don't let gossip turn into lies
D. Think twice before you gossip

根据最后一段中的“The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects you r "juicy story" might have.”

C
People like to post their selfies(自拍照) on social media. To know more about it, scientists at Syracuse
University in New York recently did a research and came up with some surprising findings.
People who post selfies and use editing software to make themselves look better show behavior connected to narcissism(自恋), the researchers said. Makana Chock, a professor from Syracuse University, said because social media is mostly used by people to share unimportant information about their lives, it is a good place for people to “work towards satisfying their own vanity.” Those “likes” under their Facebook selfies make them feel good.
Besides, people who post group selfies show a need for popularity and a need to belong to a group, the research found. Some people feel “peer(同伴) pressure” to post selfies and some follow the popular belief that if there is no picture of an event or experience, it did not really happen. “Anyway,it shouldn’t be seen as negative. People get sense of satisfaction especially when they get likes. And it does no harm,” Chock said.
Other findings from the study include: There are no major differences on how often men and women post selfies and how often they use editing software. But men who post selfies showed more of a need to be seen as popular than women who posted selfies.
Chock said posting selfies on social media is not all that different from what people have done for many years. On trips and special events, our parents and grandparents used cameras instead of phones to take photos. They would bring back photos to show friends and family. You had no choice but to look at them. You probably commented about how nice everyone in the photos looked, especially children and the person showing the photos. They were happy to hear your comments. That was the old way of “clicking like”. On social media, however, people can decide not to look at photos --- even if they click “like”.
28. What is the research mainly about?
A. The ways of making people look better in selfies.
B. The reasons for people posting selfies on social media.
C. The differences between men and women in posting selfies.
D. The connections between posting selfies and mental health.

Many of us think, wrongly, that the moon doesn’t change. For example, the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ruoxu once wrote that “Generations have come and passed away; From year to year the moons took alike, old
and new.”
However, a new study published in the journal Nature Geoscience shows that the moon is in fact slowly shrinking over time. For the study, a group of US scientists examined and analyzed thousands of photographs taken by the NASA orbiter Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera They found that there were lots of faults (断层) on the surface of the moon. These faults were formed by recent movement on the moon.
According to NASA, the moon is made up of pieces of rocks with a hot core (核) .The moon continued to expand as it was born. But in this process, it released energy and cooled down. Then it began to shrink, in a way comparable to the shrinking of a grape into a raisin (葡萄干) . Over the past several hundred million years, it has become 46 meters “skinnier”. But due to its hard and rocky crust (外壳) . the moon’s surface continues to push up, “Some of these quakes can be fairly strong around f ive on the Richter scale (里氏震级) ,” said Thomas Watters, a senior scientist at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in the US.
But does that mean the moon is a dangerous place that human shouldn’t try to explore and live on in the future? Maybe not, reported the Telegraph, “This isn’t anything to worry about. The moon may be shrinking, but not by much. It’s not going anywhere,” Watters comforted us.
The new discovery proves that the idea that the moon is a dead, boring place is wrong. “We have be en to the moon and we’ve done some great science, but there is still a lot we don’t know. The moon is shrinking —we didn’t really realize that until recently. It’s a much more active and interesting place than we thought and we should explore that,” NASA scientist Nathan Williams said.
32. Which point of view about the moon may the writer agree to?
A. It stays the same as before.
B. It is becoming lightly smellers.
C. It is getting older and older.
D. It has passed away.
