Five days before Christmas, police officer Lima was sent to a local Stop and Shop for a reported theft. The accusation (指控) was that two females were 1 some items at the self-checkout but bypassing other items and 2 those items. Obviously, this family was in real need. While Lima firmly 8 following the law, he decided to cut them a break and not to 9 them.
The two-females, consequently, were very grateful but kind of 10 because generally, in that same sit uation there would probably be a different outcome and they’d be 11 .
Lima took things a step further in an effort to aid the family. He gave them $200 gift card, telling them not to get things in 12 ways any more.

This year my husband and I decided to have a quiet, low-key New Year's Eve. We wanted to spend it with our kids and other immediate family and make it a special 1 for them, instead of 2 a babysitter and going out on our own. The logical way to do this was through 3 . As we all know, food had a magical way of making; a night 4 , and our New Year's Eve certainly 5 that way, thanks to doughnuts(甜甜圈).
I decided to make doughnuts because my cousins had 6 a batch(一批) on Halloween and I found it very 7 . I used a recipe from the 1976 Mennonite cookbook More With Less and it 8 a curious ingredient---two cups of mashed potatoes that 9 made the texture lighter. The doughnuts were 10 and cut from a sheet of dough(生面团), then left to rise until ready to fry in hot oil. Then they took several seconds to 11 , which meant that my enormous batch of 100 doughnuts was 12 cooking in a fairly short time. We glazed(浇上浆液) the tops and then 13 them for the rest of the evening. The leftovers disappeared at breakfast.
This will become an annual 14 , I have no doubt. Whether we host a bigger party or keep it small, there will always be 15 doughnuts, because when you have hot homemade doughnuts,
you can't help but have the best time.

15 years spent in the field of education has provided me with treasured moments. One of the most priceless happened when I was teaching second grade, 10 years ago.
In May of the fourth quarter, I decided to 1 something special for the children: A Mother’s Day tea. We put our 2 together to come up with ideas of how to 3 our mothers. We decided to hold our tea the Fr iday before Mother’s Day. Each child took home an invitation and I was 4 to see that every mother was planning to attend. I even invited my own mother.
Finally the 5 day arrived. At 1:45 that afternoon, each child lined up at our classroom waiting for the 6 of his or her mom. As it got closer to starting time, I looked around and my eyes quickly found Jimmy. His mother hadn’t 7 and he was looking anxious.
I took my 8 by the hand and walked over to Jimmy. “Jimmy,” I said. “I hav e a bit of problem here and I was wondering if you could 9 . I’m going to be really busy. I was wondering if you could keep my mother company while I’m busy.”
My mom and Jimmy sat at a table with two other mother-and-child 10 . Jimmy served my mom her treats, presented her with the gifts I had made, and pulled out and pushed in her chair, just as we had practised the day before. 11 I looked over, my mom and Jimmy were in 12 conversation.
Now, 10 years later, I work with students of all ages, educating them about the environment. Last year, I was at a high school to 13 a senior class on a field trip, and there was Jimmy. When Jimmy made sure we were the last two, he said, “Remember our Mother’s Day 14 we had in second grade? Thanks for all you did for me, and thank your mother, too. No one knew my mom didn’t make it!” I 15 my work with a hug from a teenage boy who had probably stopped

How do young people learn best? This is something I think a lot when I am teaching foreign languages to young people. I often 1 that traditional teaching 2 are hardly effective for young brains to learn a foreign language.
After moving to southern Italy, I was 3 to have had the chance to 4 a private course teaching English to children under 7. I 5 children liked singing and enjoyed games so I wanted to use these 6 to help my students 7 English conversation skills. I found some fun and 8 songs online, which they loved very much. I also found the English version of some nursery rhymes(童谣)they once were 9 with. All of them were very entertaining and helpful but 10 could still not have a basic 11 in English.
I wanted these students to be 12 in the language I was teaching and I also wished them to speak it. I was eager to deliver 90% of my lessons in English. 13 , I knew it would be difficult to get them to talk in a foreign language they 14 speak outside our lessons. So I had to 15 a simple yet effective plan.
One day I decided to 16 a dialogue in English and rather than simply getting students to repeat the phrases, I got them to chant (反复唱) 17 . I discovered that chanting was a practical way to get students to speak in English-it 18 !
So when teaching English to young people now, I 19 them to make up their own chants to help them remember 20 or complex sentences.

For more than 20 years I have been traveling the world, preferring often to spend a year or two in different countries 1 to just visit as a tourist. It has become a big part of my identity as an adult and shaped 2 I see the world and myself.
My first 3 of this amazing life was when I was 19 years old. I was 4 among a small group of college classmates to spend a year abroad. This was long before people could travel the world 5 through social media like Facebook, Instagram and Weibo. In order to see a place, you had to go there and 6 it firsthand.
Living abroad can be exciting. I thought it would be 7 because I spoke the language, but I enjoyed the little differences between the British and American culture and language. For instance, instead of 8 the British called it “rubbish”; instead of favor they spelled it “favour”. But there were also 9 that year too. One of my classes was called “Europe Since 1870”. In the U.S., I would have expected an introductory history class, but in England, I was 10 o have already known the history; now was the time to analyze it. That 11 I not only had to learn the history as I went along, but also I had to try to write a paper explaining why certain events happened as they did. I know now that I was thrown into the deep 12 , in a completely different and far more challenging environment, and it was natural that I wouldn’t understand everything easily. Despite this, I don’t 13 anything about my time in London. Even 14 painful experiences, we learn to grow.
15 the difficult times made me sad and homesick. But luckily that was not as important as the amazing experience I had getting to know people from all over the world. I met dozens of interesting people from places like France, Greece and Germany in Europe, to Rwanda. Palestine and Australia. Learning how to make friends with people from different cultures and backgrounds was really fun, and these new friends helped put a(n) 16 to the countries they represented (代表).
As I finished the 17 year, I was torn inside about leaving London after such a life-changing experience.
I learned so much about myself as a young woman and a(n) 18 . When I 19 to my college
for my final year, friends and professors saw a(n) 20 me. I had more maturity and self-awareness that I hadn’t had before. It was just the beginning of a future of world travel and a love of different people and cultures.

Every year about 40,000 people attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. They 1 with them lots of waste. The 2 might damage the beauty of the place. The glaciers(冰川) are disappearing, changing the 3 of Kilimanjaro.
Hearing these stories, I’m 4 about the place —other destinations are described as “purer” natural experiences.
However, I soon 5 that much has changed since the days of disturbing reports of 6 among tons of rubbish. I find a 7 mountain, with toilets at camps and along the paths. The environmental challenges are 8 but the efforts made by the Tanzania National Park Authority seem to be 9 .
The best of a Kilimanjaro 10 , in my opinion, isn’t reaching the top. Mountains are 11 as spiritual places by many cultures. This 12 is especially evident on Kilimanjaro as 13 go through five ecosystems(生态系统) in the space of a few kilometers. At the base is a rainforest. It ends abruptly at 3, 000 meters, 14 lands of low growing plants. Further up, the weather 15 — low clouds envelope the mountainsides, which are covered with thick grass. I 16 twelve shades of green from where I stand. Above 4, 000 meters is the highland 17 : gravel(砾石), stones and rocks. 18 you climb into an arctic-like zone with 19 snow and the glaciers that may soon disappear.
Does Kilimanjaro 20 its reputation as a crowded mountain with lines of tourists ruining the atmosphere of peace? I found the opposite to be true.
