China’s water towns prove there are some places left in China that still have dreamy beauty — a welcome sight in a country that often feels like a giant construction site. Unlike Venice, which works very hard to attract a lot of travelers, the Chinese towns offer crowd-free trips back in time.
Hongcun Ancient Village
With Mount Huangshan as the head, the lake-filled town as the body and ancient bridges as legs, this is a unique beast. The most special structure in the thousand-person village is Chengzhi Hall, a country palace built in 1855.
Tai’erzhuang
In 2020, a US$743.54 million restoration (重建) project was carried out by the local government. And Tai’erzhuang in east China was able to restore its classic architecture during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Despite the small size, Tai’erzhuang has a number of traditional temples, waterways and museums. The two-square-kilometer town makes for a nice day trip from the Chinese capital.
Zhouzhuang
Despite its population of 138,000 people — tiny by Chinese standards — the town’s location near Shanghai and Suzhou makes it easy to reach for short visits. Visitors pass through shops on the way to the town’s two main sites, Quanfu Temple and Chengxu Temple. A boat ride through town costs around US$16 (100 yuan). Traditional Chinese folk music sung by boatmen is for free.
Huangyao Ancient Town
Huangyao Ancient Town lies in a river bend (河湾), which is believed to prevent the locals’ good fortune from flowing away. While wealthy in the past, the town developed slowly over a 1000-year history. Today, it’s home to only 600 families. Located in Guangxi, Huangyao covers 360,000 square meters surrounded by mountains, which have plenty of large caves open for exploration.
21. Which town receives financial aid from the government?
A. Hongcun Ancient Village.
B. Tai’erzhuang.
C. Zhouzhuang.
D. Huangyao Ancient Town.
22. What can we learn about Zhouzhuang from the text?
A. Its population is quite large according to Chinese standards.
B. There are two temples as main attractions.
C. It doesn’t cost much money to listen to the boatmen singing.
D. It is not convenient for a short visit from Shanghai.
23. What is special about Huangyao?
A. Its location was chosen to protect its good fortune.
B. It is richer today than ever.
C. It is a country palace built in 1855.
D. In appearance, it looks like a unique beast.
B
The life of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) was just as interesting as one of his characters, maybe even more so. He had an interesting life and is still admired by the people all over the world after his death in 1910.
Clemens was born under Halley’s Comet (哈雷彗星) and also died when the comet appeared again about 70 years later. This shouldn’t have been any surprise to anyone who knew him well. However, Clemens knew in 1909 that he would die when the famous comet would come back, although it was thought that he was joking at the time.
At the time of Clemens’ early writing days as a reporter, it was common for writers to use a pen name in dangerous times. Clemens picked 〝Mark Twain〞in 1862. He used other pen names as well, including 〝Josh〞and 〝Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass〞. But why did he pick 〝Mark Twain〞at all? Clemens would say because it was a term from river boating where you would find out how deep the water was.
Clemens wrote on many topics, but he was also one of America’s first science fiction writers with such works as A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. Clemens was attracted by science as well as nature, especially rivers. He invested (投资) in new inventions but lost a lot of money by doing so.
The final interesting fact about Mark Twain is that he was a real cat lover. One summer vacation in New Hampshire, he rented cats nearby for his stay.
24. What was people’s reaction to what Clemens said about Halley’s Comet’s reappearance in 1909?
A. They were surprised at his power.
B. They believed in him.
C. They thought it was a joke.
D. They were excited about the event.
25. For what purpose did Samuel Langhorne Clemens use a pen name?

B. To show his gift for writing.
C. To protect himself from danger.
D. To attract more readers.
26. We can learn from the text that Mark Twain ___________.
A.loved cats very much
B. was the first writer to write science fiction
C. once wanted to be a scientist
D. was very good at investing
27. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Samuel Langhorne Clemens’ interests.
B. Samuel Langhorne Clemens’ novels.
C. How Samuel Langhorne Clemens achieved success.
D. Interesting facts about Samuel Langhorne Clemens.

We British people love the idea of a real Christmas tree—but not so many of us like the realities of dragging a 7foot Norway Spruce(云杉木) through the house and leaving needles all over the place.
If you count yourself among the reluctant group, then it may be time to go artificial (天然的). After all, buying an artificial Christmas tree needn't mean accepting defeat.
First, there's a huge range of choices and sizes.
Another big bonus of choosing an artificial Christmas tree is cost: artificial trees can last for decades, so they work out cheaper than paying for a real tree every year. Like now retailers(批发商) are offering great deals at the moment: at Tesco, there’s 25 percent off artificial Christmas trees. Meanwhile, you can take advantage of the current 〝3 for 2 offer〞at Argos to fill your house with not one, not two, but three.
Of course, you can keep your artificial tree at home for years and years; however, a 〝real〞one will always have to be transported, used and dealt with every year.
Are there any drawbacks? Yes. You might think you're saving the planet, but an artificial tree is actually not an environmentally friendly option. Most are made in factories in Asia, resulting in some serious air miles to reach the UK. Another problem is that they are not very natural—and of course you won't get that lovely pine smell either. Moreover, you' ll also need to find space for storage.
28. What does the underlined word 〝reluctant〞in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Active.
B. Related.
C. Unwilling.
D. Supportive.
29. Which is NOT the benefit of buying an artificial Christmas tree?
A. Many choices.
B. Free from transportation.
C. Cheaper than a real one.
D. The lovely pine smell.
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. People need to find space to store an artificial Christmas tree.
B. British people like to drag a real Christmas tree home.
C. Artificial Christmas trees are environmentally friendly.
D. People may get 3 more if they buy 2 artificial Christmas trees.
31. How many problems with an artificial tree are mentioned in the passage?
A. One.
B. Two.
C. Three.
D. Four.

Eating with a fork instead of a spoon can help you lose weight, a new research suggests. It also says that putting mirrors in your dining room will help weight loss because they actually make junk food taste worse.
The researchers asked 185 college students to choose chocolate cake or a fruit salad and evaluate the taste. Those who ate them in a room with a mirror scored the taste of the junk food lower than those in a room without one, but it had no effect on the fruit salad.
Lead scientist, Dr Ata Jami of the University of Central Florida, said: 〝A glance in the mirror tells people more than just about their physical appearance. It enables them to view themselves and helps them to judge themselves and their behaviors in a same way that they judge others.〞The mirrors were found to push the subjects(实验对象) to compare and match their own behaviors with accepted social standards.
The study’s authors believe it proves that people don’t want to look in the mirror when they feel that they are now sticking to those social standards. When they do look in the mirror, feelings of discomfort and failure are increased. Therefore, the presence of the mirror causes a discomfort and lowers the taste of unhealthy food. But, this is only the case if the person selects the food they are
eating because they are responsible for that choice.
The study suggests that mirrors be placed in eating spaces so people will start eating more healthily.
32. According to the research, which of the following may taste worst when eating in a room with a mirror?
A. Porridge.
B. Chocolate cake.
C. Vegetables.
D. Chicken soup.
33. Why can mirror influence the taste of junk food when people have it?
A. Because it reminds people of their not charming appearance.
B. Because it distracts people’s attention to judge others.
C. Because it makes people feel full.
D. Because it gives people a feeling of failure.
34.To make people eat more healthily, it’s advised to place a mirror.
A. in dining rooms
B. in living rooms
C. in bedrooms
D. in gardens
35. Which part of the journal may this text appear?
A. Entertainment.
B. Sports.
C. Health.
D. Education.
