Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings. The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them.
Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in hot water. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult position. Imagine a person who can not swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest(投资) in stocks without knowing anything about the stock market.
“To keep your head above water” is a colorful expression that means staying out of debt. A company seeks to keep its head above water during economic hard times.
A man who loses his job tries to keep his head above water until he finds a new job. “Water over the dam” is another expression about a past event. It is something that is finished. It cannot be changed. The expression comes from the idea that water that has flowed over a dam cannot be brought back again.
“Throwing cold water” also is an expression that deals with ideas or proposals. It means to not like an idea. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But your wife “throws cold water” on the idea because she says a new car costs too much.
29.If a person tries to keep his head out of water, we can say that______.
A.he is trying not to get into debt.
B. he is trying to pay off his
debt.
C.he is trying to keep his promise.
D. he is in danger of losing his life.
30. According to the last paragraph, if someone throws cold water on your idea, it means he/she .
A. wants to work harder
B. doesn’t like your idea
C. is in a difficult situation
D. is happy about your idea
31. Which of the following expressions is a little different from the others in meaning?
A. To be in the hot water
B. To be in deep water
C. To keep your head above water
D. Water over the dam.
32.This passage is written mainly to tell us_________.
A. the use of water
B. how to use some expressions about water
C. expressions about water and their meanings
D.expressions with negative meaning
D
Be grateful. Gratitude(感谢)is a sign of appreciation and you ought to show appreciation for life. Always wake up every morning in acknowledgement that someone die d the previous night but you didn’t and that someone did not wake up but you did.
I have food on my table; I have clothes to wear; I have a good paying job even though my boss is a fool.
Make somebody happy. When you sow happiness, you gain happiness. Mother Teresa knew this secret so well; she devoted her life to helping others even if it simply meant putting a smile on someone’s face. Here is a sum of two of her famous quotes:“A life not lived for others is not a life; let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier ”
Act as if you are happy. Smile always, even when you are feeling blue. When the body acts, emotions follow. A smile costs nothing but it creates much. It enriches those who receive it without making those poor who give. Learn to smile at all times. It will not only make you happy, but win you happy friends.
Stay close to friends. I was feeling very sad and depressed at work one Friday morning. I didn’t know what to do so I approached a friend and we got talking. I shared my burden with her and we had a brief talk. By the time I finished pouring out my heart to her, I already knew why I was not happy and what I had to do as well. Don’t be afraid to share your feelings with friends; it works.
33.What does the underlined word“acknowledgement”probably mean?
A.thanks
B. fright
C. regret
D. sorrow
34.When you are feeling upset(心烦的), you ought to___________.

municate with friends you rely on
D.devote yourself to making others feel happy.

For many high school students it seems that there is never enough time. There are several steps you can take to organize your time better.
Make a to-do list every day. It makes it easy to plan any of the activities or meetings you may have in addition to homework. Be sure to set priorities(优先的事物). 36

Decide on the time that is good for you to do certain things. If you are more of a morning person, try getting up an hour earlier and do schoolwork before school. Review your notes every day. 38 If you spend a few minutes at the end of every day going over what you learnt , it will mean less time studying when it is time for the exam.
39 . Studies have shown that getting enough rest helps your memory. When you are tired, everything seems more difficult. It is best to stay on a regular sleeping cycle as much as possible.
