Why play games? Because they are fun, and a 1ot more besides. Following the rules-planning your next move-acting as a team member-these are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.
Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating (合作) .
Many children’s games have a practical side Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones. Which sharpens the hand-eye coordination(协调)needed in hunting.
Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much..
Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. "Everything happens for the best," my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."
Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked(搭便车) to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station-and got turned down every time.In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person-"Go out in the sticks and find a small station that'll give you a chance," she said. I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois.
While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything
happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to hunt a job. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, my frustration(挫折) boiled over(沸溢,发怒). I asked aloud, "How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?" I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. The preceding (在前的)autumn, my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. I did a 15-minitue build-up to that play, and Peter told me I would be broadcasting Saturday’s game! On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: "if you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment".
I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I'd gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.

It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.
Over the phone, his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday." Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel (新闻短片)as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
"Jack, did you hear me?"
"Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago," Jack said.
"Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce(回忆) about the many days you spent over 'his side of the fence' as he put it," Mom told him.
"I loved that old house he lived in," Jack said.
"You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life," she said.
"He's the one who taught me carpentry," he said. "I wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important... Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said.
Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser 's funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before, he had to return home. Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture... Jack stopped suddenly.
"What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.
"The box is gone," he said.
"What box?" Mom asked.
"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk.
I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was 'the thing I value most,'" Jack said.
It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.
"Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said sadly.
Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return address caught his attention.
“Mr. Harold Belser” it read.
Jack tore open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack’s hands shook as he read the note inside.
"Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life." A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, and tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his fingers slowly over the fine cover, he opened it. he unlatched the cover.
Inside he found these these words carved: "Jack, Thanks for your time! -Harold Belser."
“Oh, My God! This is the thing he valued most…”
Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his assistant and cleared his appointments for the next two days. "Why?" his assistant asked.
"I need some time to spend with my son," he said.

第二节:(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
第81至85题是一位教师针对她的学生在学习英语时遇到的问题给出的解答。
请从A、B、
C、D、E、F这六个问题中,选出与解答对应的问题。
选项中有一项是多余的。
81.The English Speaking Basics section is a great example of making numerous sentence
with a single phrase. So don’t spend hours and hours learning many different words. Use that time to study phrase instead, and you will be closer to English fluency.
82. In my opinion, you don’t have to go anywhere to become a fluent English speaker.
You only need to surround yourself with English. You can do this by making rules with your friends that you will only speak English. You can also carry an MP3 player and constantly listen to English.
83. If you just want to answer some questions about grammar, then study grammar.
However, if you want to be fluent in English, then you should try to learn English by using it, such as talking with your friends in English, or writing diaries in English.
84. Reading, listening, and speaking are the most important aspects of any language.
The same is true for English. Therefore, students should learn to recite what they have heard or read. Speak more, and you will speak well. Also, it will in turn benefit your reading and writing.
85. It is important to practice in a correct way, so you’d better study English
by talking with a native English speaker or by choosing the correct material.
In short, use English material that you can trust--- that is commonly used and correct.
A.Many of the students know lots of the details about English grammar, but they
can’t use them well. It seemed that they have paid too much attention reciting the points of English grammar, but ignore using them in a conversation or an article. That’s why they can give a correct answer to questions about English grammar, but cannot speak or write well.
B.When students want to create an English sentence, they like to translate the
words from their mother tongue. The order of the words is probably completely different and they will be both slow and incorrect by doing this. Besides, they will be trying to incorporate grammar rules that they have learned.
C.Many students learn vocabulary and try to put many words together to create a
correct sentence. It amazes me how many words some of my students know, but they just focus on accumulating complex words, but ignore remembering some simple phrases.
D.Though the natural order of learning a language is listening, speaking, reading
and then writing, the order for many of my students is reading ,listening, writing, and then speaking. In the current education system, students are mostly required to listen, read and write, but not speak. As a result, students seldom practice speaking.
E.As we know, living in an environment where all the other people speak English
is good for learning English. So some students choose to study abroad. However, some of them learn very little. This is because they went to an English speaking school, but only made friends from their own country and they didn’t speak English often.
F.Many students believe “Practice makes perfect.” Actually, this is far from
the truth. If students practice incorrect sentences, they will never speak English perfectly. I have found that the material some students use is not suitable for them. Sometimes, the language is more formal and difficult to understand. And sometimes, the content is not used in regular life.

To build a green school, I’d like to give a few suggestions as follow: Littering should not be allowed at school so rubbish takes time to break down. We need to plant more trees on campus since they will not only add beauty to our school but also reduces the content of CO2 in the atmosphere. Recycling is considered as the key to protect the environment so that we can encourage our students recycle bottles, plastics bags, batteries and waste newspapers. Furthermore, it is less costly to buy recycling materials. Someone needs to make an effort to save energy at school. For example, we should turn out off electricity equipment when it isn’t used.
