About 21,000 young people in 17 American states do not attend classes in school buildings. Instead, they receive their elementary and high school education by working at home on computers. The Center for Education Reform says the United States has 67 public “cyberschools,” and that is twice as many as two years ago.
The money for students to attend cyberschool comes form the governments of the states where they live. Some educators say cyberschools receive money that should support traditional public schools. They also say it is difficult to know if students are learning well.
Other educators praise this new form of education for letting students work at their own speed. These people say cyberschools help students who were unhappy or unsuccessful in traditional schools. They say learning at home by computer ends long bus rides for children who live far from school.
Whatever the judgment of cyberschools, they are getting more and more popular. For example, a new cyberschool called Commonwealth Connections Academy will take in students this fall. It will serve children in the state of Pennsylvania from ages five through thirteen.
Children get free equipment for their online education. This includes a computer, a printer, books and technical services. Parents and students talk with teachers by telephone or by sending emails through their computers when necessary.
Students at cyberschool usually do not know one another. But 56 such students who finished studies at Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School recently met for the first time. They were guests of honor at their graduation.

Clay is found almost everywhere in the world. It is formed by the action of wind and water on rocks over thousands of years. The rocks change in both chemical and physical ways. Chemically, elements like potassium and aluminum are added and take away. Physically, the rocks break down into smaller and smaller pieces. After a long time, some of the rock changes to clay.
Clay is important because it is used around the world to make containers of all kinds. Potters add water to soften the clay. This makes it easier to form into shapes by hand or by machine. Then it is fired in an extremely hot stove. The result is a container with a hard surface that will last for many years.
In many countries, clay was formed from volcanoes. This kind of clay usually contains many minerals. So the fires to make containers from volcanic clay must be hotter than those used for non-volcanic clay. The fires may be as hot as one thousand four hundred degrees Celsius.
It is also important to dry the clay containers slowly. This means that the highest temperature should not be reached too fast.
You can add materials to clay to gain desired results. For example, you can add sand to prevent tiny breaks or lines from forming in the finished product. But you should not use sand from the coasts of oceans. Instead, you should use sand from rivers or from other areas of land that are not near the sea.
You can usually find good clay in low areas of islands or land, especially if volcanoes helped form the land. Clay often exists in fields covered with some water. The clay will be found about one meter below the ground. River banks often also have clay about one meter or less under the surface.
You can recognize clay because it is very shiny when it is wet. You can also perform a test. Take some of the material and add enough water to it to make it seem like you are making bread. Then press it in your hand until it is about the size of an egg. It is probably clay if it holds together instead of falling apart when you stop pressing.
45. It’s not so easy to find clay ______________.
A. in the field covered with some water
B. in the field near the river bank
B. in the land formed by the volcanoes D. in the land on the top of mountains
46. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

clay.

B. Some clay is formed by the power of the wind and water.
C. You can add materials in the clay when you want to make containers.
D. You can dry clay container quickly if you want to save time.
48. Why must the fires to make containers from volcanic clay be hotter than those
used for non-volcanic clay?

C. The temperature is difficult to reach.
D. High temperature is good for the containers.

Maja Kazazic looked closely down into the aquarium (水族馆). For two years, she had been watching the injured dolphin named Winter swim around the tank. From a distance, the dolphin seemed approachable enough. Still, as Kazazic prepared to jump into the water, a little panic gradually came into her excitement.
The young woman eased herself into the pool. Despite her fear, she felt strong wearing her new leg. She was ready to make good on a promise from long ago.
In second grade in Mostar, Yugoslavia, Kazazic’s five-year-old cousin, Jasmina, died of leukemia (白血病). Kazazic swore that she would honor the little girl by swimming with a dolphin, an animal they both adored. “Jasmia never got the chance to do it,” says Kazazic, 32, “so I decided that some day I’d do it for her.”
In 1993, during the Bosnian Civil War, 16-year-old Kazazic was badly injured. Her left leg was cut off just below the knee and was brought to the United States for treatment. A few months later, Kazazic received her first artificial leg. Because her right leg was also damaged, walking was still very painful. Nonetheless, she managed to graduate from a local high school.
After receiving a BA in psychology, she moved to Florida’s Gulf Coast. She liked watching the dolphins play at the aquarium. A young dolphin, Winter, who had lost her tail in a crab trap, caught Kazazic’s eye: “She swam more like a shrimp than a dolphin.”
After one doctor’s visit, trainers fit Winter with a high-tech tail. When it was done, Winter swim away fast. Kazazic was impressed. She approached the trainers, who put her in touch with inventors. Within ten days, she had a new leg and she could walk without pain again.
Eight months later, Kazazic was ready to keep the promise she had made in honor of Jasminia. “After being in a war zone, this should be a piece of cake,”Kazazic said as she lower herself into the tank. She held out a hand to Winter, who approached cautiously, and then moved away. After a few minutes, the dolphin let Kazazic move her hand gently over her back. The two started an hour-long swim around the pool. When Kazazic climbed out, her parents hugged her. She would have shouted out with joy had she not been aware of dolphin s’ sensitivity to noise. Instead she said quietly, “I felt I owe somebody something, and now I have paid my debt.” Out in
the parking lot, she got into her car and shouted loudly and happily all the way.

The Couch Surfing network is an online community stretching across the globe with over one and a half million members. The basic concept is to provide a platform for travelers to contact people who are willing to put them up free of charge. Travelers connect with potential hosts online and, if they like each other, exchange details to make further arrangements.
Basil is one traveler from Switzerland who is currently couch surfing with a Chinese host in Beijing. “I thought staying in hostel is nice but you mostly meet foreigners and speak English. If you use Couch Surfing you have chance to meet people living around the world and really get a chance to know the life of the place you visit.”Basil was speaking during a regular meeting of the Beijing network of Couch Surfing with a membership of almost 2000.
Although some people may have concerns about meeting complete strangers and giving them full access to your house, Beijing group member Fred Sharp from California say that the Couch Surfing community is one that generally attracts trust worthy people.
“I have never had a problem with guests. I’d say that this Couch Surfing
community worldwide is a fairly trustworthy community. Like I say, always be cautious, make sure that you read everyone’s profile that you’re considering hosting, and if it doesn’t feel right just say ‘no’, it’s OK.”
Originally launched in the US as a none profit organization in 2004, Couch Surfing is growing fast across the world. China is no exception with around 30,000 members and hundreds more signing up each week. One of them is Beijing resident Hai Yan who joined in November 2009. She says the first time she hosted a guest was a very positive experience. “My first guest was from Italy. He was very kind and helpful. He bought me a present from Italy, a handbag. It’s a famous brand!”
As the organization grows from strength to strength, hotel owners across the world will be watching very closely and possibly thinking twice about raising their prices too high.

Good morning, everyone,
It’s great honor for me to speak here. My name is Li Xiaojun, born into a humorous family. My father and mother are all teachers. Influenced by them, I read widely during my early age, but I’ve developed a great interest in arts and sports. I’m easy-going, get along well with my classmates.
It is this personality which helps me win over all my classmates’friendship, and also help me overcome many difficulties both in academic and personal life. Being admitted in your University has always been a beautiful dream for me. I dream constantly that I, along with mine classmates, will study happily under the help of the respectable professors; I dream that I will swim freely in the sea, enjoying the waves of knowledge.
I hope all my dream will come true in the near future.
Thank you.
