Ⅲ.阅读理解 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
I honestly have been amazed at the Internet since I was 16.I have used it about
8 years except one year when I lived on a distant lonely island and it's useful. And the Internet has allowed me to learn and become more cultured.I have studied many things about Europe, Russia, history, religion and the Internet has allowed me to meet kids, adults from all around the world. It is interesting also how available data and information is.I had found a lost sister I had never got to meet from our real mother because of the Internet and now we talk often.I am also able to listen to news from other countries such as Russia where the media has less bias while American media hardly tells the truth and tries to hide things behind their own opinions. So I thank the Internet for allowing people to come out of their shell and most likely find the truth if they really seek it.
The Internet is a wonderful communicator which will change the lives of our children and grandchildren into the future and hopefully better communication will
lead to a better world. There is a great new site for those who want to find all kinds of jobs at sea.
The Internet has shown me how small the planet actually is.I enjoy reading and learning about my fellow earthlings. To survive we need to work together in the protection of our fragile environment and in sharing our natural resources.
The Internet especially opens the world and gives possibility to communicate.I think the satellite also, because there you can see other people's life and thinking, which increases your knowledge.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, American laborers often worked long hours for little pay. Many worked under extremely dangerous conditions.About five hundred thousand workers, however, had joined groups called labor unions, hoping to improve their situation.
In 1900, the largest national organization of labor unions was the American Federation of Labor. Its head was Samuel Gompers.Gompers had moved to New York with his parents when he was thirteen years old.He was twentyfour when he began working for the local union of cigar makers. He worked for the labor movement for sixty years.
Samuel Gompers had helped create the AFL in the late 1880s.He led the
organization for all but one year until his death in 1924.Gompers defined the purpose of the labor movement in America. He also established the method used to solve labor disputes.Gompers thought unions should work only to increase wages, improve work conditions and stop unfair treatment of workers. He called his method pure and simple unionism.
Samuel Gompers sought immediate change for workers. He used group actions such as strikes as a way to try to force company owners to negotiate(谈判).Gompers was criticized for going to social events with industry leaders, and for compromising too easily with employers. But Gompers believed such actions helped his main goal.He believed if workers were respected, their employers would want to make working conditions better.
Under the leadership of Samuel Gompers, the labor movement won its first small gains. For example, the federal government recognized the right of workers to organize. That happened when union representatives were part of the National War Labor Board during World War Ⅰ.Yet conditions for American workers continue to improve as employers realize that treating their workers well is good for business.

My father traveled from Southern California a few weeks ago to go skiing with his friends. This is an annual event, in which he and several of his club friends stay at a local hotel, dine out, and ski.And because this trip is planned far in advance, they go regardless of the snow conditions. This particular week there was just a small amount of manmade snow. When I asked him how the skiing was, he informed me “It was the best day ever!”
Dad has been skiing for over forty years, in every imaginable condition. He has skied in snowstorm where you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.He has skied in sunny days of fresh powder and no crowds.Regardless of the circumstances or conditions, whenever I asked,“How was skiing Dad?”—he always responded the same way,“It was the best day ever!”
Skiing is not the only thing that makes Dad happy. He has the same positive attitude about his job.For twentyfive years he was a fireman, and if you asked him how he liked it, he would tell you that it was “the best job ever!” After retiring from the fire department, he became a traffic warden. And again, he said it was a wonderful job and he loved it!
Maintaining this positive, happy attitude has not always been easy for Dad, either. But on occasion where he has been negative, he always pulls himself out of it and works himself back to that optimistic place of delight in life.
Dad's attitude towards life has taught me an invaluable lesson: life holds such hope and promise for the person who positions his attitude for joy and success. And I have had the pleasure of being raised and loved by a father who usually chooses to stay in a positive frame of mind, which helps him to face each new situation expecting the best outcome.

Agricultural experts have launched a land and water management project in the Middle East. The project seeks to increase food security in dry areas.Researchers say the water availability in some of the areas has dropped well below the internationally recognized standard.Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, the West Bank, Syria and Yemen are all taking part in the project. It is part of a larger tenyear effort called the Water and Livelihoods Initiative. The project is also expected to increase household income for farmers in the areas.

The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas will provide technical support for the project.Officials from the International Water Management Institute and the International Food Policy Research Institute are also taking part
