(2018·江苏徐州) You may think that English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. The spelling of English has always been a problem, but it was more of a problem in the days before a dictionary. In those days people spelt words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn't made until the time of the Qing Dynasty.
The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The
idea for this dictionary came from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary.
Murray had not been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one metre underground. In winter he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o'clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening.
Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, and his two daughters were among them. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It had more than 15,000 words in twelve books. And you thought your

When a thought has found words
Poetry(诗歌) is the forgotten child of literature. Few people read it for pleasure. In Western high schools, poetry is seldom taught because it is considered to be out of date and have little to do with the tile of today’s students.
In China, however, poetry is still an important part of the curriculum(课程). Recently,
the Ministry of Education has increased the number of ancient Chinese poems for students to memorize and recite, from 14 to 72. Why is it important to learn poems?
First of all, poetry is a necessary part of learning traditional Chinese culture. It is a path to understand your history and your society. It is also the key to understanding the thoughts and feelings that are common to everyone but that we may be unable to express the joy of Li Bai dancing with the moon, for example. Everyone has feelings of joy, love, loneliness, sadness and even anger, and a good poem can put those feelings into words, and bring us self-understanding. Poems can express beauty. In a few short lines, even something common can become beautiful. Here is a poem called “Fog” by Carl Sandberg: The fog comes/ on silent haunches(弓腰) / and then moves on. Yes, fog does move smoothly, silently and like a cat, and Sandberg catches that feeling and image(形象), and makes it beautiful.
Of course, to really enjoy poetry, it has to be read aloud. After all, a poem is really just a song without music. Most ancient poetry, like Homer’s Epics(《荷马史诗》) and China’s Book of Songs, was spoken for hundreds of years before it was written.
The American poet Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has its thought and thought has found words. ” You are lucky that you now have seventy-two poems to learn!

Drug (毒品) use in Britain has increased by 30% in the last five years. Use of hard drugs, for example, cocaine (可卡因) and crack cocaine, is increasing as a result of these drugs becoming cheaper and easier to buy.
Young people in Britain are more likely than other Europeans to take illegal (非法的) drugs. UK teenagers are taking up to five times more illegal drugs, for example, ecstasy tablets (摇头丸) and cannabis (大麻制品), than in other European countries.The most common drug for UK teenagers is cannabis. Over 35% of 15 to 16-year-olds say they have tried it. Harder drugs such as crack cocaine are less common. As many as one in twelve 12-year-olds have taken drugs.
British law puts drugs into three groups, from the most dangerous Class A drugs to the least addictive (使人上瘾的) Class C drugs:
• Class A: hard drugs, for example, crack cocaine;
• Class B: for example, ecstasy tablets;
• Class C: "soft" drugs, for example, cannabis, which are also addictive and dangerous. In the UK there are possibly 500,000 Class A drug users. As a result, the UK spends $390 million a year on treatment centers to fight drug use. Treatment centers spend more than $3,000 to help every drug user. But only 3,800 drug users a year successfully go through the drug treatment. Teenagers gave the following reasons in order of importance:
• to copy their friends and to look cool;
• so as to have a good time and to feel good;
• in order to see what it is like and to experience something new;
• so as to be like adults, but to be different from their parents;
• because the drugs are cheap and easy to buy;
• because they have nothing better to do with their time.
