The lamp retails for only $10.
The Frosted Scroll Solar-Powered Lantern
Most solar lights are used with plants and make your garden look much better. Well, instead of sprucing up your plants, you can add a little mood lighting to your deck or porch. This lamp could even be used indoors, if you make sure it stays close to a window to get the full charge it needs to run. This is not the usual solar lamp fond in gardens, which is exactly what makes it so appealing.
/
In order for this lamp to cast a pretty scroll design onto your tabletop, it'll need to soak up the sun through a solar panel located on the top. After it has been fully charged, though, it'll give you light for up to eight hours. It doesn't have to stay on all the time either, like a lot of other solar lights. This **es with an on/off switch, so that you can choose when to use up the charge. You can purchase the lights individually for £24.99 or about $39.

Property Prices "Causing Distress"
Six out of 10 Chinese white-collar workers say they are fatigued by work and other pressures, a survey has found. The number 1 cause of anxiety is the ever-increasing cost of housing and property, the survey reported. About 76 percent of office workers are over-worked and not entirely healthy, according to samples from 3 million health cheeks in cities.
Less than 3 percent of the respondents interviewed **pletely
healthy, said the White Paper On the Health of Chinese White-collar Workers, released on Sunday by the Chinese Medical Doctors' Association.
The survey interviewed people aged between 26 and 45, with monthly incomes of between 5,000 yuan($732) to 10,000 yuan. Many higher-income people between the ages of 35 and 50 are biologically 10 years older than their actual age, with declining health, the survey said.
Buying property ranks as the most significant cause of pressure for 46 percent of those interviewed, followed by parents' health, difficulty in finding a spouse, and children's education.
The increasing gap between income and housing prices is causing the most stress and some 85 percent of families cannot afford to buy a house, the survey said. The ratio of housing prices to family income should be three to six times, while in China the ratio this year is expected to reach 8.3, far beyond reasonable, the Economic Blue Paper published yesterday by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences reported. The survey said that the land supply system and developers' land stockpiles have also contributed to the out-of-reach property prices.
Commercial property prices have gone up 5 to 10 percent, with a square metre costing between 4,935 to 5,280 yuan. From January to August of 2009, developers invested 2, 111 billon yuan in property, up 14.7 percent from the previous year. Revenue from the sale of commercial property was 2,346.3 billion yuan, up 69.9 percent from 2008.
Property prices are the talk of the town, and this topic reached a peak in 2009 as the Chinese television drama, Dwelling Narrowness, became a hit with many viewers across the country. The 35-episode series has touched a nerve with city dwellers who empathise with the characters in the drama, according to media reports. Caught in a debate between reality and morality, the audience could not help but connect with the distress and pressure experienced by the characters, caused by the cost of living in a city, according to television analysts.
Most young college graduates and migrant workers who settle into jobs in big cities would prefer to buy an apartment rather than rent, according to media reports. However, rising housing prices make owning an apartment very difficult. Ownership creates a burden that costs parents' their entire savings or results in decades of mortgage loans.
Wang Ke, a purchasing manager with a monthly salary of 10,000 yuan, had to borrow money from her grandmother for the down payment for her apartment. With a monthly mortgage of 4,000 yuan, Wang said
saving money is now virtually impossible. "Housing prices go up every day, though my salary doesn't," she said.

Lisa Tyler was weary after a long, hard day at the pottery factory where she works, but as she approached her home in the English city of Stoke-on-Trent, her heart lightened; soon she would behaving a nice cup of tea, putting her feet up and watching Friends, her favourite TV series. But first, she needed to change out of her work clothes and pick up her three-year-old son from his grandmother's house nearby.
As Lisa walked up her garden path, she noticed a light flashing on and off in an upstairs bedroom. A shiver went down her back. What if it was a burglar? Quietly, she crept round to the back of the house to see if there was any sign of a break-in. Sure enough, a window was open and someone's coat was hanging on the gatepost!
Well, 26-year-old Lisa didn't **ing face to face with a burglar, so she ran to a neighbour's house and rang the police. As she sat waiting for the police to arrive, Lisa's curiosity got the better of her and she decided to go back and see what was going on. That's when she saw a **ing out of the downstairs front window. It was a man climbing out. Lisa gasped in shock. The burglar was carrying her portable television!
At this point, Lisa saw red. She didn't have many possessions and she'd saved long and hard to buy that set. Besides, nobody was going to stop her watching Friends.
"Oh no, you don't." she muttered under her breath, as fury swelled inside her. Without even stopping to think, she across the garden and started shouting at the burglar, "Give me my TVdrop it now!"
Ignoring her, the man fled across the garden, so Lisa threw herseff at him and successfully rugby-tackled him to the ground. The burglar struggled to escape, but Lisa hung on like the best kind of guard dog, despite being punched and kicked. As she looked up, she realized that she recognized the burglar's face. She was so surprised that she lost her grip and the burglar got away, leaving the TV behind in the garden.
By the time the police and her father arrived, Lisa was in tears. "I can't believe you were so foolish, Lisa," scolded her father. "You could have been killed."
"I know, but at least he didn't get my TV." she replied.
Lisa later remembered the name of the burglar, who had been in the same year as her at school. He was later caught and jailed for 15 months **mitting a burglary and assault. In May last year, Lisa was given a Certificate of Appreciation by Staffordshire police for her "outstanding courage and public action". In the future, however, she intends to leave household security to a new member of her family,
Chan, who is a real guard dog.

Melting Glaciers
Several glaciers in the Alps have already disappeared in as few as 40 year. In the Patagonian ice fields of Argentina, some glaciers have receded one and one-half kilometers in the last 13 years. In the Himalayan Mountains, glaciers are melting so fast that runoff sometimes floods the surrounding areas. Their fate is a preview of the future of other glaciers on Earth.
The shrinking of the world's glaciers will have massive consequences **munities that depend on ice melt for their water. In the short-term, these consequences may appear beneficial. For example, extra water from glaciers means that hydroelectric dams will run at maximum power. In the long run, however, the melting of
Earth's glaciers could be catastrophic. Today's extra hydroelectric power has been stolen from the future. Communities with ample power now may have none after the glaciers have melted and have stopped
filling reservoirs. Likewise, water for irrigation, drinking, transportation, and nuclear power stations will slow to the levels provided solely by rainfall. The loss of ice will increase sea levels worldwide.
Temperature change and a lack of snow is causing the retreat of the glaciers. According to many scientists, our plant is getting warmer. In the Alps, for example, temperatures have risen an average of 1-1.5 degrees Celsius(1.8-3 degrees Fahrenheit) since 1850. During the same period, Alpine glaciers in Switzerland have lost about half of their volume. Likewise, temperatures have changed in the Tien Shan Mountains in southern Kazakhstan. Researchers there have discovered a small rise in temperature, 0.5 degrees Celsius, over the last 50 years and even this is enough to reduce glaciers dramatically over time.
As temperatures have increased, precipitation has decreased. Glaciers no longer build up during snowy winter months which also contributes to their decrease in size over in the long run.
The warming of our globe is often blamed on human activity, such as the burning of fossil fuels, especially in industrialized nations. Automobile emissions and industrial waste are increasing the quantity of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, possibly causing increased temperatures. However, scientists have not definitively tied human activity to the current temperature rise.
Some scientists argue that global warming may be a normal trend of the Earth's temperature violations. One theory argues that we are near the end of a so-called "Little Ice Age", and that the retreat of the glaciers is a natural result of this cycle. Whether natural or produced by humans, there is little hope for the immediate future of glaciers as we know them.
Direction: Complete the summary below by choosing no more than three words from the passage.

Around the world, glaciers are disappearing. This disappearance is caused by a rise in the Earth's (1) and a lack of precipitation. Some scientists think that global warming is a

Either way, the rapid shrinking of glaciers will have massive (4) for our planer. At first, some of these changes may appear (5) such as increased production of hydroelectric power. Over time, however, glacial melting could be devastating.

My entry into Black women's history was unexpected but agreeable. In the preface to Black Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia, I recount the story of exactly how Shirley Herd (who, in addition to teaching in the local school system, was also president of the Indianapolis chapter of the National Council of Negro Women) successfully provoked me into changing my research and writing focus. Although I dedicate this volume to her and to her best friend, fellow club woman and retired primary school teacher Virtea Downey, I still blush at the fact that I went to graduate school to become a
historian in order to contribute to the Black Struggle for social justice and yet met her request to write a history of Black women in Indiana with reluctance. I had never even thought about Black women as historical subjects with their own relations to a state's history, and I thought her invitation and phone call extraordinarily intrusive. Only later did I concede how straightforward and reasonable had been her request to redress a historical omission. Black women were conspicuous by their absence. None of the social studies texts or state histories that Herd and Downey had used to teach their students made mention of the contributions of Black women. Since historians had left them out, Herd reasoned, only a "real" historian could put them in, and since I was the only tenured Black women historian in the state of Indiana at that time, the task was mine.
/
Herd rejected my reservations **pletely ignored my admonitions that she could not call up a historian and order a book the way you
drive up to a fast-food restaurant and order a hamburger. In spite of my assertions of ignorance about the history of Black women in Indiana and my confession of having never studied the subject in any history course or examined any manuscript sources pertaining to their lives, Herd persevered. Black women, as historical subjects and agents, were as invisible to me as they had been to school textbook writers.
Undaunted by my response, Herd demanded that I connect (thankfully without perfect symmetry)my biology and autobiography, my race and gender, my being a Black women, to my skill as a historian, and write for her and for the local chapter members of the National Council a history of Black Women in Indiana. I relented and wrote the book, When the Truth Is Told: Black Women's Culture and Community in Indiana, 1875-1950, as requested. In the process, I was both humbled and astounded by the array of rich primary source materials Herd, Downey, and the other club women had spent two years collecting. There were diaries, club notes, church souvenir booklets, photographs, club minutes, birth death, and marriage certificates, letters, and handwritten county and local histories. Collectively
this material revealed a universe I never knew existed in spite of having lived with Black women all of my life.., and being one myself. Or perhaps more accurately, I knew a universe of Black women existed.
I simply had not envisioned its historical meaning.

For most average exercisers and athletes, sports drinks are not only a waste of your money, but more importantly, can actually worsen the health of most who use them. Less than one percent of those who use sports drinks actually benefit from them. Most sports drinks are loaded with things you DON'T want, like refined sugars, artificial colors and chemicals, none of which are in natural coconut water, which is a clear, light, refreshing liquid (95 percent water) extracted from young, green coconuts that have not reached maturity.
If you exercise for 30 minutes a day at a moderate to high intensity, fresh, pure water is the best thing to help you stay hydrated. It's only when you've been exercising for longer periods, such as for more than 60 minutes, or in the heat, or at extreme intensity levels, where you are sweating profusely, that you may need something more than water to replenish your body in order to keep your body's proper electrolyte balance. If your electrolytes fall out of balance, you can suffer severe medical problems. That is because electrolytes are **pounds that become ions in solution and have the capacity to conduct electricity. They are important for electrical signaling-and of course your brain, heart, muscles and nervous system are all bioelectrical systems.
Besides plain water, coconut water is one of the best and safest
options to rehydrate yourself after a strenuous workout. If you need the electrolytes, it will provide them. If you don't need them, then it certainly won't hurt you. And as you're learning, coconut water has a mountain of other health benefits in addition to rehydration, which no commercial sports drink in the world can provide. Depending on how much salt you've lost through sweating, you might even add a tiny pinch of natural Himalayan salt to your glass of coconut water.
One study in 2007 found sodium-enriched coconut water to be as effective as commercial sports drinks for whole body rehydration
after exercise, with less stomach upset.
Coconut water is sterile when it comes out of the coconut, and extremely similar in composition to human blood plasma. These unique properties make it so **patible with the human body that it can be infused intravenously into your bloodstream. Physicians have actually used coconut water successfully as an intravenous fluid for more than 60 years, especially in remote regions of the world where medical supplies are limited and it has saved many lives. Honey-Food or Medicine?
What do we know about honey? It's sweet and sticky, it tastes great on bread and in hot drinks, and it's a pleasant alternative to sugar. However, there's a lot more to honey than meets the eye, and one day it may replace many of the items in our medicine cabinets.
/
Doctors throughout history have appreciated the medicinal properties of honey. In Ancient Egypt it was used to treat cuts and bums. The Ancient Romans used it to help people with sleeping disorders and the Ancient Greek used it to cure skin diseases, ulcers and sores. More, recently, German doctors mixed it with cod "liver
oil to treat battle wounds during WWI, and opera singers have been known to use it to boost their energy and soothe their throats.
Today, as homeopathic medicine is becoming more popular, honey has been rediscovered as a natural remedy and is being used successfully to treat many ailments such as anaemia, arthritis, colds and stomach ulcers. It is particularly effective in the treatment of bums and wounds. Honey aerosol sprays have even been used to treat chronic bronchitis.
The beauty industry has also recognized the natural benefits of honey and there are many **panies which use honey-based products. These include creams, lotions, soaps and face masks which claim to help heal blemishes, reduce the appearance of scars, moisturise the skin, soften, wrinkles and make skin look younger and healthier. There are also a number of honey-based hair care products which claim to strengthen hair and make it softer, shinier and healthier.
Honey and products containing honey have always been popular items in health food shops. Honey is sold in various forms as a remedy for sore throats, stomach ulcers and as a gentle, natural laxative.
/
What is it then that makes honey such an effective natural remedy? Well, after many years of research, biochemists still can't say certain. They have however, managed to identify some of the healing properties in honey. Firstly, honey contains low levels of hydrogen peroxide, a chemical which kills bacteria. Secondly, it creates a moist environment when spread onto a wound which speeds up the natural healing process. Scientists have also found that certain types of honey act as antibiotics. In fact, honey is actually more effective than some of our current antibiotics because it works on certain microbes and bacteria that have developed a resistance to current antibiotic treatment. However, researchers have also found some types of honey are more beneficial than others. For example, honey containing nectar from the Australian jelly bush and the New Zealand tea tree plant have been found to possess more medicinal properties than other varieties.
Medical researchers are still working on identifying the role that honey could play in future medical practices, but they all agree that we should not be using the honey in our kitchen cupboards to treat ourselves. This is because **mercial brands of honey actually contain bacteria which could contaminate an open wound. They also agree, unfortunately, that simply eating honey has minimal health benefits.

In the past, hunting was necessity, with humans killing wild animals for food and clothing. However, modern hunters generally hunt for one of two reasons: for sport, or because it's part of their traditional culture. Can hunting ever be justified?
Hunting for sport is popular all over the world. Every year in the United States, more than 12 million people go hunting; and wealthy enthusiasts from around the world pay thousands to go on African safaris. While many recreational hunters eat the animal they kill, others simply do it for trophies. These so-called trophy hunters pay taxidermists to stuff and mount the dead animals, which they then display in their homes as souvenirs.
So, should hunting for sport be allowed? No, says animal right group PETA. They believe animals have the right to live out their natural lives in the wild. And the group notes that hunted animals often escape after being wounded and are left to die slowly and painfully. Other anti-hunting activists argue that hunters prefer to kill the bigger members of a species, which often leaves the smaller ones behind to breed. As a result, the entire species slowly becomes weaker.
Of course, many hunters disagree. They claim that responsible hunters follow a strict code of conduct, which includes never letting a wounded animal escape, and never taking a shot at an animal unless it's going to be a clean kill. Hunters also argue that their sport keeps certain species in check, preventing overpopulation. For example, they say that if waterfowl weren't hunted, their numbers would grow too large, leading to outbreaks of fowl cholera a disease dangerous to humans.
Hunters even argue that they're helping endangered species. This
is because many countries reinvest hunting revenue (from permits or safari fees) back into animal conservation. For example, some of the money that Zimbabwe earns from foreign elephant hunters is put back into elephant conservation. As a result, Zimbabwean elephant numbers are actually steadily increasing. However, conservationists say that killing animals in order to save them is hypocritical and that there are other ways to protect endangered wildlife.
But what about traditional cultures who still hunt for their food? The Inuit people have lived in the Arctic for thousands of years and their traditional diet includes the endangered bowhead whale. Local laws allow them to kill a limited number of bowheads a year and many Inuit argue that traditional societies must adapt and drop endangered species from their diets.
