第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Dry Ice is a unique substance which has many uses. Essentially, dry ice is frozen CO2. The first report of what we now call dry ice came from the French chemist Charles Thilorier in 1834. In 324, the Drylee Corporation of America named the solid form of CO2 as "Dry Ice", which is what it is popularly called today.
At normal atmospheric pressure, CO2changes directly from solid to gas. It skips the liquid phase(阶段)which makes regular ice wet. Frozen CO2is also much colder than regular ice. But regular ice freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, CO2 changes from gas to solid at -21.3 degrees Fahrenheit. This extremely cold temperature makes it very dangerous to handle with bare hands. It can cause frostbite in a very short period of time.
Dry ice has been used for a variety of purposes throughout the past century. Its primary use is to refrigerate food when electrical refrigeration isn't available. Through the process of sublimation (when CO2 changes from solid to gas), it can maintain cold food for a long time.
If you've ever been to a play and seen heavy fog on the ground, it is likely that you have seen dry ice in action. This effect can be achieved because CO2 is heavier than air, so evaporated (挥发的)CO2 will sink and accumulate on the ground.
Another interesting use for this substance is to bait(诱杀)insects like mosquitoes. These insects have sensors which guide them to CO2. They find the high concentration of CO2 in dry ice quite attractive.
Mars has long been a mystery for human beings. We have been looking for evidence of life on Mars. In the 360s scientists guessed that the polar ice cap of Mars
was made of frozen CO2. More recent observations have shown that while the topmost layer consists of frozen CO2, the most of it is probably regular frozen water.
1、Frozen CO2 gets its name of "Dry Ice" mainly because
A.it is very easy to make it dry
B.we can't melt it and it doesn't get wet
C.it looks like ice at a low temperature
D.it is solid like ice at -21.3 degrees Fahrenheit
2、The underlined word "frostbite" in the second paragraph probably means
A.the shakes caused by cold
B.damage caused by freezing
C.a fever caused by being cold
D.a sharp pain caused by bums
3、According to the passage, dry ice can be used to
A.freeze most of food in the next century
B.increase the production of farming
C.make a vivid fog effect on stages
D.help to improve the environment
4、What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Dry ice on Mars is near the polar.
B.Not much dry ice has been found on Mars.
C.The polar ice cap of Mars is unique.
D.No frozen CO, on Mars can be melt.
22.(8分)When we think of a generation gap we usually think of conflicting tastes in music, or pastimes. But now the generation gap is handwriting. After one teacher in Tennessee discovered that she had students who couldn’t read the assignments she was writing on the board, she posted it on the Internet saying handwriting should be taught in schools.
Opponents claim that handwriting has become out of time in our modern world. Typed words have become a primary form of communication. Once a practical kill handwriting is no longer used by the vast majority of Americans. It is no longer taught in schools, and some claim that the time that it would take to teach it could be put to better use, for instance, by teaching the technical skills.
But even in today’s world there are still plenty of reasons to pick up a pen and apply it to paper. Many American institutions still require original signatures, for instance, signing for a registered letter and buying a house. And original signatures are much more difficult to forge(伪造) than their digital counterparts. There is also strong evidence that writing by hand is good for the mind. It activates a different part of the brain, and improves fine moving skills in young children. People also tend to remember what they write by hand more than what they type, and the process of writing by hand has been shown to stimulate ideas. Besides, studies have shown that kids who write by hand learn to read and spell earlier than those who don’t. Not to mention, handwriting is pleasing, as is evidenced by the fact that no one has ever typed a love letter. And handwriting remains popular as an art form.
Yes, we live in a modern world, but we live in a modern world that is based on fundamental values.

D.Those with good handwriting may perform better in their studies.
4、What is the author’s attitude towards teaching handwriting in school? A.Opposed.

23.(8分)Samanta Schweblin, one of the best young Spanish language novelists nominated (提名) by British literary magazine Granta, has visited Beijing to promote the first Chinese edition of a collection of her short stories. The collection, Birds in the Mouth, has been translated and published by Shanghai-based publisher Reader.
“Sometimes I hold the Chinese edition and choose a story at random and try to guess which one it is. But it is almost impossible fo r me; even the length is different.” says Schweblin. “When a book is translated into a Western language, I can at least understand some parts of my stories, and therefore suffer some doubt about the quality of the translation. But my Chinese edition is mor e like an act of faith.”
Born in Argentina in 1978, Schweblin says she is influenced by the literary traditions of the La Plata area, home to many famous Latin-American novelists.
Interested in writing stories of ordinary lives where suddenly something
ext raordinary happens, something new, strange or unknown, she thinks, “The stranger and the unknown are not always related to ghosts or aliens, but can be something related to the known world, something that actually could happen.”
Birds in the Mouth tells of a divorced father who worries about his 13-year-old daughter and her mysterious appetites. It turns out that his daughter eats live birds.
The idea for this story came to Schweblin when she was browsing the Internet, “Click, click, click, a picture of a l ittle girl who looks frightened with her hands covering her mouth came to my eyes. Little by little, I developed the story in my mind, and then wrote it down” recalls Schweblin.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Good morning, everyone,
I am Li Hua. It’s my great honor to speak here. As we all know, the global water shortage is becoming increasingly severe mainly due to environmental pollution, the ever-increasing population and the improper use of water resources. Thus, we should do something to deal with it.
First, we should store water in a scientific way for future use. Second, we should develop some new ways to use the existing water resources, such as turning sea water into fresh water. Third, it’s everyone’s responsibility to make good use of water, like recycling and saving water in our daily life.
In conclusion, people around the world should protect water resources and explore potential ones scientifically.
That’s all. Thank you.。
