文章主要介绍了美国迪士尼的一部名为《寻梦环游记》的动画片,受到墨西哥亡灵节的启发,Katie Walsh写了这部电影,并介绍了这部电影的故事内容。
13. A lot of films have tried to describe the afterlife and our memories of family members who have passed away. But few have done as well as Coco, Disney-Pixar’s latest masterpiece animation, which hit the big screen on Nov 24.
Inspired by the Mexican holiday of Dia de los Muertos — Day of the Dead — the film’s team created a young boy, Miguel, who wants his family to understand his love of music. On that year’s Day of the Dead, an accident takes him to the Land of the Dead. While there, Miguel has an unforgettable and adventurous night.
According to the Times, the Land of the Dead is one of Disney-Pixar’s “most visually ambitious worlds yet”. In this land, there are friendly skeletons who can cross a bridge made of flowers on the Day of the Dead to “visit” their living family in the world of the living — that is, as long as their family still puts their photos on the family shrine (神龛). Those spirits who are forgotten by their family will disappear completely.
It’s in this magical world that Miguel gets to meet and discover the truth about his great-great-grandpa. To save him from disappearing, Miguel has to bring his photo back to the living world as soon as possible.
While told with a wild imagination, the story sends out a clear and warm message about family. Family is a concept at the center of Mexican culture. On the Day of the Dead every year, people in Mexico honor their ancestors by putting their photos up on the family shrine, as shown in the film, and share food and drinks to keep the spirits of their family members alive.

14. For years, learning to speak Cantonese was not that hard in San Francisco. It is a place where Cantonese speakers from South China have moved for over 150 years. But now, there is fear that the Cantonese language and culture might not survive present social changes. Cantonese is spoken by some 85 million people worldwide. In comparison, there are around 1 billion Mandarin (or Putonghua) speakers.
In Britain, as in the U. S., most schools that offer Chinese usually teach Mandarin. As a result, many families are struggling to find ways to pass on their Cantonese language and culture. Ceci Pang runs classes for children at Rainbow Seeds Cantonese School in London. “Many parents want their kids to be able to communicate with their grandparents,” she said. “It’s just so hard here, there are so few learning resources and lots of parents get upset. That’s usually the point the parents come to me.”
In China, there are Cantonese television programs as well as Cantonese announcements on public transport. In Hong Kong, however, Cantonese
remains the city’s top language. It is used by 90 percent of the population according to an assistant professor at the Education University of Hong Kong.
It is a different story in the U. S. The teaching of Cantonese has decreased somewhat, including in San Francisco, a city that has drawn many Cantonese speakers over the years. The San Francisco school system has Cantonese and Mandarin programs for younger students. But in high school, Mandarin is the only Chinese language available. This spring, some independent Chinese schools are helping to teach the language as Cantonese-speaking communities grow. Aleyda Poe has been managing the Cantonese kindergarten at Merit Chinese School in Plano, Texas, for more than 10 years. Poe put her two sons in the school so that they could learn about Cantonese language and culture. Now, she is helping other families do the same.
1. What are the Cantonese speakers worried about?
A.Survival of Cantonese language and culture.B.Increasing social changes in San Francisco.
C.More and more Mandarin speakers worldwide.D.Less Cantonese speakers in South China.
2. How does Ceci Pang help to handle Cantonese learning in London?
A.By visiting and talking with local families.B.By organizing language classes for kids
C.By reducing Chinese culture teaching at schools D.By using unlimited online resources
3. What is implied about Cantonese learning both in China and the U. S. ?
A.San Francisco is a city with the most Cantonese learners
B.Cantonese is learnt by 90 percent of the population in China
C.Learning resources and opportunities are limited in the U. S.
D.There are no Cantonese learning programs in San Francisco
4. Which can be the suitable title for the text?
A.Importance to improve Cantonese learning globally.

加州大学的洛丽亚·马克博士研究数字媒体如何影响我们的生活,发现:大多数人在工作学习中会被无数自己认为是必要的工作所打断,过着“松鼠”的日子,马克分析了人们注意力下降的原因以及影响。
15. I’ve been working steadily for hours now, but feel as if I haven’t even started. My attention is being pulled from my assigned task— writing this story—by a myriad of what I believe are necessary work interruptions.
Unfortunately, all too many of us are having such “squirrel” days, according to Dr. Gloria Mark, a professor of informatics at the University of California, Irvine, who studies how digital media impacts our lives. Mark explained how decades of research has tracked the decline of the ability to focus.
“In 2004, we measured the average attention on a screen to be 2 minutes,” Mark said. “Some years later, we found attention spans to be about 75 seconds. Now we find people can only pay attention to one screen for an average of 47 seconds.”
Not only do people concentrate for less than a minute on any one screen, Mark said, but when attention is diverted from an active work project, it also takes about 25 minutes to refocus on that task.
How can that be? “If we look at work in terms of switching projects, as opposed to the micro view of switching screens, we find people spend about 10 minutes in any work project before being interrupted and then switch to another work project,” Mark said.
Y es, but then we return to the original work, right? Wrong, Mark said. Instead, when we are interrupted on project two, we switch yet again to a different task—call it project three. Unbelievably, her research has shown we are also interrupted on project three, and move on to project four.
“And then you go back and pick up the original interrupted project,” Mark explained. “But it’s not like you’re interrupted and you do nothing. For over 25 minutes, you’re actually working on other things.”
“However, there’s also a switch cost,” Mark added. “A switch cost is the time it takes you to reorient back to your work: ‘Where was I? What was I thinking of? ’ That additional effort can also lead to errors and stress.”
1. What will happen if you are having “squirrel" days?
A.You will be in a bad mood.
B.You will be writing a story about squirrels.
C.You will be addicted to digital media.
D.You will be constantly distracted from your task.
2. Which aspect of “attention” does Mark’s research focus on?
A.Its type.
B.Its lasting time.
C.Its function.
D.Its development.
3. Why is it difficult for many of us to refocus on the original task?
A.We concentrate less and less on the screen.
B.Switching screens affects working efficiency.
C.We are interrupted by some other work projects.
D.More important projects remain to be completed.
4. What is Mark’s attitude toward attention switch?
A.He considers it a good thing.
B.He thinks it has some bad effects.
C.He considers it time-saving.
D.He thinks it will cost people dearly.
16. “I don’t do throw-up.” My own words were coming back to haunt (烦扰) me as I heard one of my campers yell, “Ewww, Bridger threw up.” I froze. I forced myself to turn around and look. I glanced quickly, then immediately looked away. I stopped breathing through my nose so I wouldn’t be able to smell it.
Working at Camp Seafarer for the summer was like a dream to me. Being a counselor (夏令营负责人), though, was more work than I had expected. I was always exhausted, and it was hard to keep giving 100 percent of myself twenty-four hours a day. In the end, however, it was worth staying up with a homesick camper or saying a longer goodnight to the shyest girl to help bring her out of her shell. It was just so much responsibility trying to keep twelve ten-year-olds safe, while trying to help them have a great summer. Now my responsibility was spreading to the one thing I hated most, cleaning up throw-up.
I looked around at Bridger who looked like she was in pain. Then I noticed my co-counselor, Jessie standing around. I looked at her, waiting for her to start the work. “I’ll take Bridger to the health center,” Jessie said. I couldn’t believe it! I was stuck with doing the one thing I have always said I would never do. “All right, I can do this,” I said to myself. What to get first? Paper towels! I went into the bathroom to find some. As I approached my enemy, I noticed a lot of girls were crowded around me laughing.
I then squeezed my eyes shut and went in for the kill, picking up the mess. I picked up the paper towels as fast as I could and threw them into the trash can. I had done it! I could handle this job. Then I noticed that now all the people were laughing.
“Sarah!” Bridger cried, “The throw-up was fake!”
I learned, that summer, that with responsibility comes great rewards, such as my campers’ laughing over the fake throw-up. Every smile and every hug made the job worth it.

A.She broke her mental block.
B.She recognized Bridger’s trick.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。
文章主要说明了睡眠的重要性以及如今的人们存在的一些睡眠问题。
17. Daily life has its satisfactions, such as the perfect reply to a friend’s text message, the first after-work drink, or the unexpected gift. 1
That moment when the mess of 21st-century existence disappears into the non-judgmental embrace of a soft bed.
Somehow we have pushed this pleasure to the back of the queue. A third of American adults report sleeping less than the recommended seven hours. Many of us feel under-rested. For some, the problem is modern life: emails, to-do lists and screens. 2
Now there’s increasing evidence that a lack of sleep is associated with higher risk of depression, cancer, and other problems. Research published in the European Heart Journal reports that heart disease was lower among people who went to sleep between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., no matter how long they slept. 3
But after the appearance and rise of sleeping aids, is sleep the next part of human experience that will become increasingly tracked, counted and compared? We sigh at LinkedIn users who claim to wake up at Sam and learn Mandarin while meditating. But when people overcommit to sleeping well, it can be counter-productive.
4 In his book Overcoming Insomnia and Sleep Problems, Oxford professor Colin Espie writes about ‘orthosomnia’, where people are so
focused with sleeping well that they become too anxious to do so. The marketing of sleeping aids adds to this.
Espie says we each have a sleep pattern that we figure out through trial and error. Genetically, some humans are larks and some are owls; the larks may just have better cardiovascular health. For an owl to try to fight their natural schedule, and sleep earlier, wouldn’t necessarily help.
Basic sleeping advice is notably consistent, including keeping a regular pattern, cutting back on alcohol and caffeine and taking away all bedroom distractions. Instead of just loading sleep advice on individuals, we could integrate aspects of it into public health. 5 Employers could be sensitive to the different needs of their workers.
A good night’s sleep is a profound pleasure. As far as possible, it should also remain a simple one.
A.Such research is all well and good.
B.The risk is that we ignore the problem.
C.Then there are those who can’t sleep when they try.
D.For other people, it’s the demands of work or family.
E.But does any of these really compare to the joy of going to sleep?
F.Schools could start later to coincide with children’s body rhythms.
G.Stressing ourselves out about a lack of sleep can worsen the problem.
