Do you have a favorite beach that you have visited? If you hesitate to answer, please look at the following:
1.Siesta Key, United States
Siesta Key is on the Gulf of Mexico. It offers safe and clean waters, a big beach, striking sunsets, and excellent seashell collecting. Visitors of all ages go to Siesta Key when the tide is low to find beautiful, large and, sometimes, rare seashells.
2. La Concha, Spain
La Concha beach is in the city of San Sebastian, in northern Spain’s Basque area.
Peo ple come here to surf and swim in the Atlantic Ocean’s La Concha Bay. They also enjoy walking along the wide, curved beach. La Concha is more developed than other best-known beaches. From the sandy coast, you can see San Sebastian’s tall buildings and hear the sounds of city life. In fact, it is one of Europe’s best-known urban beaches.
3. Galapagos Beach, Ecuador
Probably no place on Earth is better known for wildlife than the Galapagos Islands. And the white-sand Galapagos Beach at Tortuga Bay does not disappoint in that respect. Hundreds of sea turtles build their nests here each year. Visitors may also see marine iguanas, sea lions, flamingos, and lava gulls—birds that are found only in the Galapagos.
4.Elafonissi Beach, Greece
On the Greek island of Crete, this best beach offers unspoiled natural beauty. Elafonissi Beach is known for its extremely blue-green-colored waters, pink sand and black rocks.

I have learned something about myself since I moved from Long Island to Florida three years ago. Even though 1 own a home in Port St. Lucie just minutes from the ocean, an uncontrollable urge wells up to return to Long Island even as others make their way south. I guess I am a snowbird stuck in reverse. Instead of enjoying Florida’s mild winters, I willingly endure the severe weather on Long Island, the place I called home for 65 years.
I’m like a migratory bird (候鸟) that has lost its sense of timing and direction, my wings flapping against season.
So what makes me fly against the tide of snowbirds? The answer has a lot to do with my reluctance to give up the things that define who I am. Once I hear that the temperature on Long Island has dipped into the range of 40 to 50 degrees, I begin to long for the sight and crackling sound of a wood fire. I also long for the bright display of colors—first in the fall trees, and then in the lights around homes and at Rockefeller Center. Floridians decorate, too, but can’t create the special feel of a New England winter.
I suppose the biggest reason why I return is to celebrate the holidays with people I haven’t seen in months. What could be better than sitting with family and friends for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner, or watching neighbors’ children excitedly open gifts on Christmas? Even the first snowfall seems special. I
especially enjoy seeing a bright red bird settling on a snow-covered branch. (My wife and 1 spend winters at a retirement community in Ridge, and I’m grateful that I don’t have to shovel.)
While these simple pleasures are not unique to Long Island, they are some of the reasons why I come back. Who says you can’t go home?
24. What’s the difference between Florida and Long Island?
A. Winters in Florida are milder.
B. The snowbirds in Florida are rarer.
C. Weather in Florida is severer.
D. Florida is nearer to the ocean.
25. What does the underlined word “reluctance” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. Imaginative and outspoken.
B. Hard-working and serious.
C. Homesick and easy-going.

A. To describe his dream to be a free bird.

We all know what a brain is. A doctor will tell you that the brain is the organ of the body in the head. It controls our body’s functions, movements, emotions and thoughts. But a brain can mean so much more.
A brain can also simply be a smart person. If a person is called brainy, he is smart and intelligent. If a family has many children but one of them is super smart, you could say, “He’s the brains in the family.” And if you are the brains behind something, you are responsible for developing or organizing something. For example, Bill Gates is the brains behind Microsoft.
Brain trust is a group of experts who give advice. Word experts say the phrase “brain trust” became
popular when Franklin D. Roosevelt first ran for president in 1932. Several professors gave him advice on social and political issues(问题)facing the U.S. These professors were called his “brain trust”.
These ways we use the word “brain” all make sense. But other ways we use the word are not so easy to understand. For example, to understand the next brain expression, you first need to know the word “drain”. As a verb, to drain means to remove something by letting it flew away. So a brain drain may sound like a disease w here the brain flows out the ears. But, brain drain is when a country’s most educated people leave their countries to live in another. The brains are, sort of, draining out of the country.
However, if people are responsible for a great idea, you could say they brainstormed it. Here, brainstorm is not an act of weather. It is a process of thinking creatively about a complex topic. For example, business leaders may use brainstorming to create new products, and government leaders may brainstorm to solve problems.
If people are brainwashed, it does not mean their brains are nice and clean. To brainwash means to make some accept new beliefs by using repeated pressure in a forceful or tricky way. Keep in mind that brainwash is never used in a positive way.
28. Acc ording to the text, if you’re the CEO of Bai Du you can be called .
A. the organ of Bai Du
B. the brain drain of Bai Du
C. the brains behind Bai Du
D. Bai Du’s brain trust
29. Roosevelt successfully won the election probably because .
A. he got his brain trust
B. he got the help of word experts
C. he was smart at giving advice
D. he was the brains behind America
30. From the passage, we can infer that .
A. to drain a lake means to fill it with a lot of water
B. brainy and brainwash are never used in a negative way
C. brainstorming is not a good choice for a political leader for lack of creativity
D. a country suffers a “brain drain” when educated people move to other countries
31. The author explains the “brain” expressi ons by .
A. making comments
B. making comparisons
C. using examples
D. analyzing origins

It is a question people have been asking for ages. Is there a way to turn back the aging process?
For centuries, people have been looking for a “fountain of youth.” The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink from its waters, you will not age. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon searched for waters with magical powers in the early 1500s. But what he found instead is the American state of Florida.
Researchers in New York did not find an actual fountain of youth, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears the answer may be hidden right between your eyes, in an area called the hypothalamus.
The hypothalamus is part of your brain. It controls important activities within the body. Cai Dongsheng, a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, found that hypothalamus stem cells influence how fast aging takes place in the body as well. He also reported that when the hypothalamus starts aging, so does the body.
“So when hypothalamus function is in decline, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, and this protection against the aging development is lost, it eventually leads to aging.”
Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate (激活) or energize the hypothalamus in laboratory mice. They did this by injecting (注射) the animals with stem cells. Later, the researchers examined tissues and tested for changes in behavior. They looked for changes in the strength of the animals’ muscles. They also studied the social behavior and cognitive (认知) ability of the mice.
The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals. Cai says injecting middle-aged mice with stem cells from younger mice helped the older animals live longer.
These findings could lead to new ways to help doctors identify and treat any number of health issues concerning aging problems. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? This is the question Cai and his team are thinking about.
32. What did Juan Ponce de Leon find?
A. The American state of Florida.
B. Magical powers.
C. A Fountain of youth.
D. A way to stop the aging process.
33. What do we know about the hypothalamus?
A. It is located in the eyes.
B. It starts aging due to the increase of its stem cells.
C. It plays a key role in controlling the aging process.
D. It functions well when the body starts aging.
34. What did the researchers do during the experiment?
A. They strengthened the muscles of the mice.
B. They examined tissues and tested the behaviour of mice.
C. They injected the stem cells into the younger mice.
D. They changed the social behavior and cognitive ability of the mice.
35. What would the researchers probably do next?
A. Inject stem cells of mice into humans.
B. Research on the cognitive psychology.
C. Help the mice live longer.
D. See if anti-aging effects also work in human beings.
