1One day, the time management expert lectured to a group of business school students. He made a demonstration at the scene, which left a lasting impression on the students.Standing in front of students with high iqs, he said, let's take a quiz. Take out a one-gallon jar and set it on the table in front of him. Then he took out a bunch of fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them in a jar. When the jar was over the top of the jar and no more rocks could fit in, he asked, “is the jar full?" All students should say: "full!" . The time management expert replied, "really?" He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. He poured some of the gravel in, and tapped the glass bottle wall to fill the gap between the stones. "Is the jar full now? "He asked the second time. But this time the students understood, "probably not," one student said. "Good! Experts say. He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of sand. The sand is filled with all the gaps between the rock and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "is this jar full?" "No! "Shouted the students. Onceagain he said, "good! Then he took a pitcher of water and poured it into the jar until it was flat. Looking up at the students, he asked, "what is the point of this illustration?" One eager student raised his hand and said, "no matter how tight your schedule is, if you work hard, you can do more!" "No!" The time management expert said, "that's not what it really means. This example tells us that if you didn't blow up the rock first, you couldn't put it in the bottle anymore. So, what are the big rocks in your life? Spend time with the people you love, your beliefs, education, dreams? Remember to deal with these big rocks first, otherwise, you can't do it all your life!So tonight, perhaps this morning, you are reading this essay, and you have tried to ask yourself this question: what is the "big rock" in my life? Then, please put them in the bottle of your life first. It is better to be busy with dreams than to lose your dreams by being busy!英语经典美文阅读 2You cannot change the laws of physics . but could physics actually enable us to travel through time?It might sound crazy, but according to Einstein‘s theories, there‘s no logical reason why time travel isn‘t possible.Time travel is clearly a trickier proposition than space travel, though. And prior to Einstein, it would have been deemed utterly impossible! That‘s because the old idea about time was that it was like a cosmic metronome keeping a regular and constant beat throughout the universe. And it was thought to move in one direction only .However, what physicists now know is that time is rather more flexible than the old “ Clockwork Universe” ideas they had it. And it was Albert Einstein who set the cat among the pigeons.Einstein‘s theories about time and space were revolutionary. He b ecame a celebrity__and not just in scientific circles. It‘s only since he published his theories that scientists have been able to demonstrate that space and time really behave the way he said they did.In 1971, after Einstein‘s death, two scientists w ere able to carry out a crucial experiment. They used two atomic clocks, synchronized them, and placed one on a plane, while the other stayed in the same location on Earth. The plane then flew around the world for 80 hours. According to Einstein‘s theory, the clock on the plane would be expected to have lost time, due to being in motion over 80 hours pared to the clock on the ground. Whenthey brought the clocks together and made a parison, the clock on the plane was indeed a few nanoseconds slower than the other clock. The experiment was replicated in 1996 with advanced technology, and it was proved again__with an even bigger time difference this time. Which proves that not only is time “ warp-able” , but Einstein was arguably the greatest thinker the world has ever seen.If it were possible, however, it would present some pretty knotty paradoxes... For example, what if someone or something traveled back in time and changed the ensuing future? And have you heard the one about the time traveller who dots back and forward in time and by means of various medical technologies is able to be his own father AND mother?! And besides, if time travel is possible, where are all the people from the future__surely they‘d want to e and meet us poor stranded 21st century beings?英语经典美文阅读 3"Can I see my baby?" the happy new mother asked. When the bundle was nestled in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.Time proved that the baby's hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that was marred. When he rushed home from school one day and flung himself into his mother's arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession of heartbreaks. He blurted out the tragedy. "A boy, a big boy...called me a freak."He grew up, handsome for his misfortune. A favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music."But you might mingle with other young people," his mother reproved him, but felt a kindness in her heart. The boy's father had a session with the family physician... "Could nothing be done?""I believe I could graft on a pair of outer ears, if they could be procured," the doctor decided. Whereupon the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man.Two years went by. One day, his father said to the son, "You're going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it's a secret."The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person emerged. His talents blossomed into genius, and school andcollege became a series of triumphs.Later he married and entered the diplomatic service. One day, he asked his father, "Who gave me the ears? Who gave me so much? I could never do enough for him or her.""I do not believe you could," said the father, "but the agreement was that you are not to know...not yet."The years kept their profound secret, but the day did e. One of the darkest days that ever pass through a son. He stood with his father over his mother's casket. Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish brown hair to reveal the mother had no outer ears."Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut," his father whispered gently, "and nobody ever thought mother less beautiful, did they?"英语经典美文阅读 4To respect my work, my associates and myself. To be honest and fair with them as I expect them to be honest and fair with me. To be a man whose word carries weight. To be a booster, not a knocker; a pusher, not a kicker; a motor, not a clog.To base my expectations of reward on a solid foundation of service rendered; to be willing to pay the price of success inhonest effort. To look upon my work as opportunity, to be seized with joy and made the most of, and not as painful drudgery to be reluctantly endured. To remember that success lies within myself; in my own brain, my own ambition, my own courage and determination. To expect difficulties and force my way through them, to turn hard experiences into capital for future struggles. To interest my heart and soul in my work, and aspire to the highest efficiency in the achievement of results. To be patiently receptive of just criticism and profit from its teaching. To treat equals and superiors with respect, and subordinates with kindly encouragement. To make a study of my business duties; to know my work from the ground up. To mix brains with my efforts and use system and method in all I undertake. To find time to do everything needful by never letting time find me or my subordinates doing nothing. To hoard days as a miser does dollars, to make every hour bring me dividends in specific results plished. To steer clear of dissipation and guard my health of body and peace of mind as my most precious stock in trade. Finally, to take a good grip on the joy of life; to play the gamelike a gentleman; to fight against nothing so hard as my own weakness, and endeavor to grow in business capacity, and as a man, with the passage of every day of time.英语经典美文阅读 5It seems to me a very difficult thing to put into words the beliefs we hold and what they make you do in your life. I think I was fortunate because I grew up in a family where there was a very deep religious feeling. I don’t think it was spoken of a great deal. It was more or less taken for granted that everybody held certain beliefs and needed certain reinforcements of their own strength and that that came through your belief in God and your knowledge of prayer. But as I grew older I questioned a great many of the things that I knew very well my grandmother who had brought me up had taken for granted. And I think I might have been a quite difficult person to live with if it hadn’t been for the fact that my husband once said it didn’t do you any harm to learn those things, so why not let your children learn them? When they grow up they’ll think things out for themselves. And that gave me a feeling that perhaps that’s what we all must do-think out for ourselves what we could believe and howwe could live by it. And so I came to the conclusion that you had to use this life to develop the very best that you could develop.I don’t know whether I believe in a future life. I believe that all that you go through here must have some value, therefore there must be some reason. And there must be some “going on.” How exactl y that happens I’ve never been able to decide. There is a future-that I’m sure of. But how, that I don’t know. And I came to feel that it didn’t really matter very much because whatever the future held you’d have to face it when you came to it, just as whatever life holds you have to face it exactly the same way. And the important thing was that you never let down doing the best that you were able to do-it might be poor because you might not have very much within you to give, or to help other people with, or to live your life with. But as long as you did the very best that you were able to do, then that was what you were put here to do and that was what you were plishing by being here. And so I have tried to follow that out-and not to worry about the future or what was going to happen. I think I am pretty much of a fatalist. You have to accept whatever es and the only important thing is that you meet it with courage and with the best that you have to give.。

1Something wonderful in a disasterOn May 27, 1995, our life was suddenly changed. It happened a few minutes past three, when my husband, Chris, fell from his horse as it jumped over a fence.Chris was paralyzed from the chest down, unable to breathe normally. As he was thrown from his horse, we entered into a life of convenience with lots of unexpected challenges. We went from the "haves" to the “have-nots".Or so we thought.Yet what we discovered later were all the gifts that came out of sharing difficulties. We came to learn that something wonderful could happen in a disaster .All over the world people cared for Chris so much that letters and postcards poured in every day.By the end of the third week in a medical center in Virginia, about 35,000 pieces of mail had been received and sorted. As a family, we opened letter after letter. They gave us comfort and became a source of strength for us.We used them to encourage ourselves.I would go to the pile of letters marked with "Funny" if we needed a laugh, or to the "Disabled" box to find advice from people in wheelchairs or even in bed living happily and successfully. These letters, we realized, had to be shared. And so here we offer one of them to you.Dear Chris,My husband and I were so sorry to hear of your riding accident last week.No doubt your family and your friends are giving you the strength to face this technical challenge.People everywhere are also giving you best wishes every day and we are among those who are keeping you alive.Yours Sincerely,Nancy Reagan一、生词注解1. paralyzed ['pærəlaizd] adj. 瘫痪的,麻痹的2. chest [tʃest] n.胸,胸腔;柜子,橱3. challenge [ˈtʃælindʒ] n挑战;质问4. pour [pɔ:r] vt.灌,倒,注vi.倾泻,流出5. pile [pail] n.一堆,一叠v.堆积6. technical [ˈteknikəl] a.技术的,工艺的二、词汇拓展1.doubt【导学】1)n.怀疑,疑惑,不相信;have no doubt that…毫不怀疑,毫无疑心there's no doubt that…这毫无疑问....without doubt 无疑地,确实地;2)vt.怀疑,不信任I don’t doubt that…我毫不怀疑…I doubt whether/if…我怀疑…【例句】1)He is without doubt the cleverest student I've ever taught.他确实是我所教过的学生中最聪明的。

In the evening, the most familiar sight to me would be stars in the sky. Though they were a mere sprinkle of twinkling dots, yet I had become so accustomed to them that their occasional absence would bring me loneliness and ennui. It had been snowing all night, not a single star in sight. My roommate and I, each wrapped in a quilt, were seated far apart in a different corner of the porch, facing each other and chatting away. She exclaimed pointing to something afar, “Look, Venus in rising!” I looked up and saw nothing but a lamp round the bend in a mountain path. I beamed and said pointing to a tiny lamplight on the opposite mountain, “It’s Jupiter over there!”More and more lights came into sight as we kept pointing here and there. Lights from hurricane lamps flickering about in the pine forest created the scene of a star-studded sky. With the distinction between sky and forest obscured by snowflakes, the numerous lamp-lights now easily passed for as many stars.Completely lost in a make-believe world, I seemed to see all the lamplights drifting from the ground. With the illusory stars hanging still overhead, I was spared the effort of tracing their positions when I woke up from my dreams in the dead of night. Thus I found consolation even on a lonely snowy night ! 2Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young. When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80. 3One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the framer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway and it just wasn't worth to retrieve the donkey. So, he decided to bury it!He invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly, then slowly he quieted down till nothing more was heard.A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well, and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing! He would shake it off and take a step up!As the farmer's neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells by not stopping, never giving up, shaking it off, and taking a step up!Remember the five simple rules to be happy:1. Free your heart from hatred.2. Free your mind from worries.3. Trust in God.4. Give more.5. Expect less. 4Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither(到处) , in a wayward(任性的`,不规则的) course, ove r a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy(狂喜,入迷) –ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness--that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable(深不可测的) lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what- at last- I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have tried to apprehend(理解) the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flu. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate(回想,反响) in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me. 5Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. Thereason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, "Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood." I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.""Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested."Yes, it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life."I reflected on(仔细考虑) what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robberspanicked and shot him.Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma(创伤) center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I"d be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place."The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live.""Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness(知觉) ?" I asked.Jerry continued, "The paramedics(护理人员) were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, "He's a dead man." "I knew I needed to take action.""What did you do?" I asked."Well, there was a big, burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry."She asked if I was allergic to anything. "Yes," I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply.I took a deep breath and yelled, "Bullets!"Over their laughter, I told them. "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day wehave the choice to live fully.Attitude, after all, is everything.高中短篇英语美文篇6A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, one child appeared, and a brick smashed into the Jag's side door. He slammed on the brakes and spun the Jag back to the spot from where the brick had been thrown. He jumped out of the car, grabbed some kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?" Building up a head of steam, he went on"That's a new car and that brick you threw is gonna cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?""Please, mister, please,I'm sorry. I didn't know what else to do!"pleaded the youngster."It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up.Sobbing, the boy asked the executive, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me."Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be okay."Thank you, sir. And God bless you," the grateful child said to him. The man then watched the little boy push his brother to the sidewalk toward their home.It was a long walk backs to his Jaguar... a long, slow walk. Henever did repair the side door. He kept the dent to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention.Life whispers in your soul and speaks to your heart. Sometimes, when you don't have the time to listen... Life throws a brick at your head. It's your choice: Listen to the whispers of your soul or wait for the brick!Do you sometimes ignore loved ones because your life is too fast and busy leaving them to wonder whether you really love them? 7Hello, my name is Dimas Ramirez, I'm messaging you regarding my daughter Blanca Ramirez. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?"I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" and she gave me a giant squeeze(挤,紧握) ."Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?" I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.""No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age."I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one !" she told me.After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake(奶昔) . We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.Over the course of the school year, Rose became a campus icon and easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed(使用,授予)upon her from the other students. She was living it up.At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet and I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three-by-five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a bit embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, "I'm sorry I'm so jittery(神经过敏的) .I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order to let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed, she cleared her throat and began:"We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success."You have to laugh and find humor each and every day."You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and they don't even know it!"There is a giant difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change."Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose." She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At year's end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be. 9Bar celona is regarded as Spain‘s second city, behind capital Madrid. What is Love? The eternal question we all carry around deep within our heart. Love is the eternal search. Love is eternal when we find it. But do we really ever find it ? When we define it do we negate it? When we set limits on what we believe to be love do we begin to destroy it by hoping to understand or own it for ourselves? We offer it through all of our relationship we vary our giving, often by what we hope to receive in return. But is this really love?
I recently overheard someone say in a conversation that there is no such thing as “ unconditional love .” I would have to agree, although for different reasons. Love within itself is unconditional. Anything else is only an attempt to love, a learning to get us nearer to the one true knowing of love. It may be honorable, well-intentioned, passionate and desiring, courageous and pure. It may be felt as temporary, but if lost easily it may not have been love at all. Love cannot be thwarted and often fall short of what we hope love will be. This is where we learn we are human.

I know, I cant escape, I cant escape, I have to go through, only have the harvest. Therefore, I resolutely chose to stand posture, endure the pain of the body, the scorching sun, I believe myself, I can. I can stand up for more than 20 minutes. I cant go down. I know that every one of my persistence will make me proud. After some training, we went back to the classroom and looked away from the playground. I cant imagine such a hot day. We can still practice outside. I had never been so bitter at home. More importantly, I can stick to it. I felt suddenly that military training had made us grow. Its cold. I dont have a plum blossom. I believe that after a week of strict military training, we will have a great harvest. 17As temperatures continue to drop in Northern China, many winter holiday resorts in the Jilin Province are seeing booming business. At the Chagan Lake, people are skiing, skating and motor racing on the frozen terrain. As the pace of modern life continues to increase, we are always feeling on the go from morning till night. And it is hard to slow down. Therefore, stress goes hand in hand with the life in a competitive society.Different people, however, think of stress quite differently. Some believe that stress is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. They are of the opinion that a certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. Others argue that stress contributes to ones mental decline and hence endangers his health. According to them, relaxation, the opposite of stress, is essential for a healthy mind and body.Personally, Im in favor of the former view. I think it is impossible to avoid stress when one is entirely devoted to the career he pursues. In my opinion, it is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. 19As temperatures continue to drop in Northern China, many winter holiday resorts in the Jilin Province are seeing booming business. At the Chagan Lake, people are skiing, skating and motor racing on the frozen terrain. We came to love him and looked on him as our good friend. He is very strict not only with us but also with himself. Time Is MoneyTotal:161 words“Time is money.” This saying means that time is very valuable. But time is more valuable than money. The money we have lost can be gained again, but the time we have wasted cannot be regained. Moreover, sometimes persons can exist without money, but nothing can be done without time, just as no one can live without air.Despite being so valuable, time is often neglected by men. Since time is an invisible thing, men often waste their time unconsciously. Without anything to do, they may gossip from morning till night.People can live only at most to about 100 years. It seems fairly long, but in fact it is rather short. We often say “How quickly time flies!” How many things can a man accomplish in such a short period Hence we should use the valuable time properly to do our work. We will race with it. We will study and work hard. Never waste a little bit of it.1. neglect [nɪˈglekt]vt. 未意识到地; 不知道地; 失去知觉地; 神志不清地‘We Have Only One WorldTotal:160 wordsWhen industries grow, pollution also grows. Today the problem of environment has become more and more important. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We areusing up our natural resources too quickly and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we don’t take action immediately, then we will destroy our only world.Man has made great progress in environment protection. Government of many countries has established laws to protect the forest and sea resource and to stop the environmental pollution.Still more measures should be taken to solve the problem. First, we should start by educating the public about the hazards of pollution. The government on its part should also design stricter laws. This is not only for our own generation but also for the future generation to come.It is necessary to protect our nature environment. We must begin now to protect our only world.4. established [ɪˈstæblɪʃt] adj. My Views on Large Modern CitiesTotal:144 wordsSince every coin has two sides, living in large modern cities offers us many advantages, simultaneously causes many troubles. Better education and better jobs are easy to get, and better medical care is convenient to receive in large modern cities.People are usually well informed due to the advanced media, such as television, newspaper and net PC. Large modern cities also provide varied entertainment for the city-dwellers. The public places like cinema, bar, disco-ball are everywhere. On the other hand, large modern cities are too big to control, so the traffic jams and traffic accidents often happen, and the social security is a headache problem. And city-dwellers have to face the housing problem. Usually a house is too expensive for the salary earning class to buy and the rent is also high. Moreover, noise and pollution in large cities b ring harm to people’s health.7. simultaneously [ˌsɪməl'teɪnɪəslɪ] adv. Top Meal of the DayTotal:143 wordsA recent study shows that nearly 50 percent of the school kids in Beijing do not have breakfast. They tend to feel sleepy all day and have bad memories, so it is hard for them to get high marks in all kinds of test. Some students who study late into the night choose to miss breakfast so that they can have a few extra minutes in bed. Others are given money to buy their breakfast on the way to school because their parents are too busy to prepare it for them. In addition, a few schoolgirls want to stay slim and often go to school without breakfast. In fact, the morning meal plays an important part. It can provide 30 percent of the whole day’s energy. For a creative mind and better judgment, school kids should start their day with a regular breakfast.10. slim [slɪm] adj. YouthTotal:243 wordsYouth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite for what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you've grown old, even at 20;but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there's hope you may die young at 80.11. rosy [ˈrəʊzi] adj. 天线20. cynicism ['sɪnɪsɪzəm] n.

A solid marriage not only results in people sharing resources together, but a marriage also provides a lot of emotional support, cheerleading, and encouragement to succeed. What follows are twelve little things I do quite regularly in my marriage. Please, use as many of these as seem reasonable.I tell my wife I love her every single day. I usually do it in the morning before she leaves the bedroom, and on weekdays I'll also tell her when I see her in the evening for the first time. I usually couple(加倍,成双) it with a kiss. It's so simple, but it's a constant reminder of the fact that I do love her, no matter what.I ask about her day, listen, and ask follow up questions. I do this not only so I can keep tabs on her professional life, but also to give her a great chance to vent about her situation. Everyone needs to talk about themselves sometimes to someone who is interested - I try to provide that for her as often as I can.I try to surprise her on a regular basis. I'll spend an hour preparing a really excellent supper when she doesn't expect it. I'll spontaneously give the kids a bath when she's comfortable on the couch under a blanket, even if it's her turn. Doing these little unexpected things not only shows her I care, but also oftencompels her to do similar things for me.I hold her hand. I do this all the time, whenever it crosses my mind and seems appropriate. I'll just hold her hand gently while we're talking or we're riding in the car or we're waiting for an appointment or we're sitting on the couch in the evenings.I talk about EVERYTHING with her and let her determine what's interesting. If something is concerning me, I don't hide it from her. I tell her about it. Most of the time she's interested and we'll discuss it - sometimes she's not and I let it drop . Either way, though, she gets the message that I'm making an effort to share and be open.I work on building a positive relationship with her family. Whenever I visit or see anyone in her family, I make a special effort to try to establish or build upon a strong relationship with them. This accomplishes several things: it makes her more at ease in a family situation, it helps me to build stronger ties with people that are important to her, and it helps me to understand the influences that were around her as she grew up.I send her messages during the day. About once a week, during a time where my wife is really present in my thoughts, I send her a little simple note by email. All it says is something along the lines of "I was thinking about you just now. I can't wait until I see you this evening." It's just a very simple way of letting her know she's on my mind and in my heart.I put careful thought into gifts I give her. Sure, it's easy to just run out and get a generic gift to cover yourself during an anniversary or a birthday. However, a gift with some real thought behind it means substantially more than an obviously off-the-cuff gift.I encourage her to follow her passions and interests, even ifthey don't inspire or interest me. If my wife chooses to spend significant time on a project, it's obviously something that's important to her. That doesn't imply at all that it has to be important to me. If she's involved in her own project, I give her positive encouragement and then work on my own interests instead of saying things like "that seems like a waste of time."If she needs me, I willingly contribute to(有助于,贡献) those passions. If something genuinely excites her and she wants me to experience it, I willingly involve myself in whatever it may be: a particular type of art, a craft project, a yard project, whatever. Even if I don't enjoy it, I do have the opportunity to learn more about my wife and what she's passionate about, which means that my understanding of her grows.I look for opportunities to build mutual(共同的,相互的) friendships. The idea that there is a group of people that are "my" friends and another group that is "her" friends can be a big dividing factor between us. Instead, I often focus on building friendships and relationships that we share with others so that something of a community of friendship and love grows up around us.I hold her every night, even if it's just for a moment. I might be completely exhausted when I go to bed in the evening, but I take a moment to move close to her, put my arm around her, and hold her close, even if it's just for a minute or so. That moment of physical contact(身体接触) to end the day is a simple sign of love. First off, allow us to apologize for the abductions(绑架,劫持).Although it seemed like a good idea at the time, werecognize that too often you did not find the experience as satisfying as we did. We genuinely regret the way things got out of hand.It started out as just something to do, an occasional way to blow off steam(发脾气,减压) after a long day of observation. We tried not to break anybody, and we always put you back where we found you. Frankly you aren't all that interesting, and we might soon have grown tired of the whole thing. But we got such a kick out of your cute eyewitness accounts, what with the stories of our big dark eyes and little arms and all. You made us feel special, even if your tales were complete crap. The books, the movies, the T-shirts—we were like celebrities. And some of you took it all so seriously, with your conspiracy theories and everything. It was really quite a hoot(叫嚣,嘲骂声).Then this guy Whitley Strieber came along, and he sort of took the joy out of it, you know? What a killjoy shitbag he is. Today we abduct only nerdy guys who live alone in Airstream trailers, primarily because they're nerds and, truth be told, we just like to mess with their heads. Many of you have written asking about crop circles, so let's set the record straight. It ain't us. Really, it's not. Think about it. You people have trouble reaching your own moon, and even you have cell phones, satellite TV, and high-speed DSL.We sail between stars at speeds you believe impossible—you think we have to knock down veggies(蔬菜) in order to communicate? And why do you always assume we land in rural areas? Please. On a planet with New York, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, and Amsterdam, you figure we'd choose to hang out in Roswell, New Mexico?Have any of you actually been there? We would be remiss if we failed to mention the anal(肛门的,直肠的) probing. For the longest time, we swear we thought those were data ports. We meant no harm, and hope that you will, like us, try to forget this unfortunate chapter in our history. Inretrospect(回顾往事) it was simply a bad idea. Now we don't want to be seen as whiners(哀诉者,哭诉者), but there are a few things we wish to discuss. For one thing, we are troubled by the way we have been portrayed in the media. We represent an array of life whose richness and sheer scope would astound you. Yet for the most part, on this planet we are typecast as either hairless dweebs with foreheads like watermelons, or else giant insects who want to eat you.No offense, but this is especially hard to take from a backwater planet most beings have never heard of.The very word “alien” is plagued(折磨,苦恼) by negative associations. According to our latest focus groups, the term conjures up(使人想象出) images of slimy, parasitic(寄生的) creatures who spring onto the faces of unsuspecting beings in order to plant their young inside, or people picking cabbages. We've discussed this among ourselves, and we no longer wish to be called aliens. Henceforth, we prefer to be called “Chuck Norris®.” Please do not shorten, hyphenate(用连字符连接), or alter this in any way. The plural form(复数形式) is the same, as in, “Hey, there goes a Chuck Norris®. Wait, there goes another one."Finally, some advice.Look, from where we sit, you're all the same. We appreciate that human beings come in slightly different models and colors, and to you these nearly imperceptible differences seem to cause no end of trouble. But honestly, we're astounded that you can even tell yourselves apart. In blind taste tests, in fact, the average Chuck Norris® cannot detect any difference whatsoever. So chill, people of Earth, and try to get along. While you're in a reflective mood, take a closer look at what you're doing to your planet. You are ruining it: depleting(耗尽) your natural resources, polluting your air, sickening your oceans, and destroying unique species forever. This is just plain wrong, not to mention completely irrational(不合理的,荒谬的). Everyone knows that the logical thing is to find somebody else's planet and ruin that. Noobs. How can you possibly expect to survive in the coming interstellar economy?By the way, we've elected you to come up with the new shared unit of galactic currency. Just pick something small and ubiquitous(到处存在的), something of nominal value that you won't miss much. It's your call, but we suggest hamsters(田鼠,仓鼠).In closing, much of what you do befuddles us. Many of your core concepts—such as guilt, selflessness, and David Hasselhoff—simply have no counterparts in non-T erran cultures. You're what galactic sociologists call “a bunch of strange ducks."Yet for reasons not entirely clear, we have developed a certain affection for you. We'd just as soon keep you around, if only for the entertainment value. We're going away for a bit now, and when we return, we expect to find that you have made significant progress toward sitting at the adults’table. This will, of course, mean fewer senseless military conflicts, less reality television, and no more Sudoku.Don't make us come down there.高中生英语朗读美文篇三Don’t Allow Your Weaknesses to Limit YouWe all have weaknesses and strengths – no matter who we are. Sometimes the weaknesses seem to outweigh the strengths and sometimes it’s the other way around. Some people get sick easily. Some struggle to manage their finances properly. Some people are hopeless communicators and struggle with relationships. Many people leave it and that and accept it as just bad luck –but not everyone. Some people facing huge limitations still manage to achieve tremendous things. They rise above their weaknesses and do not allow them to limit their possibilities. It's Your ChoiceI attended a school prize-giving ceremony not so long ago and the guest speaker was Andrew Becroft, who had a severe stutter as a child. Instead of allowing this to limit him, he chose to to work hard to overcome it. He is now the Principal Youth Court Judge for New Zealand. Not only did he become successful, but he did so in a profession where he had to speak in front of others regularly — where his weakness is front and center for all to see. If he hadn’t worked on his speaking ability, it would have been very limiting to his life and career prospects. You can find similar people on New Zealand News channels, and I suspect the same in other countries. There are a number of presenters and reporters who have a noticeably unusual manner of speaking. Perhaps they have a lisp, or they have a peculiar accent or pitch of voice. These people have succeeded in spite of what would be appear to be a weakness in their profession.Lots of people face far more significant limitations than youdo. They may be missing limbs or are born into extreme poverty. But no matter what the limitation, you will always find people who have overcome it.Here are some more examples:Brett Eastburn has no arms or legs and yet is an inspirational speaker and and also a very good wrestler. He shares his story in a brief video on his site.Lance Armstrong’s bout with cancer meant he lost one testicle and had to go through chemotherapy which has a horrific effect on the body. Yet he went on to win the Tour de France, one of the most grueling sports events there is, a record 7 times.Ringo Starr, drummer for the Beatles, came from a very poor background. He was constantly plagued with illness as a child and spent large amounts of time in hospital. At 19 months old, Helen Keller became ill and lost her sight and hearing . She went on to become a world famous author and speaker, and an advocate of many social causes.Grant Calder is a tetraplegic and yet he still works outdoors on a large sheep farm in New Zealand’s rugged South Island. Here is his inspiring story.Wilma Rudolph was the 20th of 22 children. As a child she suffered measles, mumps, scarlet fever, chicken pox, double pneumonia and eventually polio, leaving her left leg and foot weak and deformed. Doctors said she would never walk again. She went on to win 3 gold medals in track during the 1960 Olympic games.Mark Inglis lost both of his legs below the knees in a mountaineering accident, but has since climbed Mt Everest.Bill Wilson was an alcoholic who wanted to help other alcoholics and founded what was to become AlcoholicsAnonymous, a movement that has helped millions of people. No One Would Have Predicted These SuccessesThese above are cases involving individuals with significant limitations, and it can be easy to write them off as exceptions to the rule, but that’s not the case. They were just people with problems. If one of these people had told you what they hoped to achieve you would have nodded kindly while quietly thinking to yourself that they had no chance. And yet the results speak for themselves. We All Face Challenges in LifeMost of us will never have to face the kinds of challenges these people faced. Yet most of us will never achieve to the degree that these people have either.Unless we choose to.If Mark Inglis can climb the highest mountain in the world without legs, what can you do?。

The word “discovery” literally means, uncovering something that’shidden from view. But whatreally happens is a change in the viewer. Thefamiliar offers comfort few can resist, andfewerstill want to disturb. But as relatively recent inventions such as the telescope and microscopehave taught us, the unknown has many layers. Every truth has geological strata, and youcan’thave an orthodoxy without a heresy. The moment a newborn opens its eyes, discoverybegins. I learned this with a laugh one morning after delivering a calf. When it lifted up its fluffyhead andlooked at me, its eyes held the absolute bewilderment of the newly born.A momentbefore it had the even black nowhere of the womb, and suddenly its world was full of colour, movement and noise.I’ve never seen anything so shocked to be alive.“发现”一词,字面上是指揭开某种视线以外的隐藏的事物。
If I Were A Boy Again If I were a boy again, I would practice perseverance more often, and never give up a thingbecause it was or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer darkness. Perseverancecan sometimesequal genius in its results. “There are only two creatures,” syas a proverb, “who can surmount th e pyramids —the eagle and the snail.” If I were a boy again, I wouldschool myself into a habitof attention; I would let nothing come between me and the subject inhand.I would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. Thehabit of attention becomes partof our life, if we begain early enough. I often hear grown uppeople say “ I could not fix my attention on the sermon or book, although I wished to do so” ,and the reason is, the habit was notformed in youth. If I were to live my life over again, I wouldpay more attention to the cultivation of the memory. I would strengthen that faculty by everypossible means, and on every possibleoccasion. It takes a little hard work at first to rememberthings accurately; but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. It only needsearly cultivation to become a power.
If I we re a boy again, I would cultivate courage. “Nothing is so mild and gentle as courage, nothing so cruel and pitiless as cowardice,” syas a wise author. We too often borrow trouble, andanticipate that may never appear.” The fear of ill exceeds the ill w e fear.” Dangers will arisein any career, but presence of mind will often conquer the worst of them. Be prepared for anyfate, and there is no harm to be freared. If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerfulside. Life is very much like a mirror: if you smile upon it, I smiles back upon you; but if youfrown andlook doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return. Inner sunshine warms notonly the heart of the owner, but of all that come in contact with it. “ who shuts love out ,in tur nshall beshut out from love.” If I were a boy again, I would school myself to say no more often. Imight write pages on the importance of learning very early in life to gain that point where ayoung boycan stand erect, and decline doing an unworthy act because it is unworthy. If Iwere a boy again, I would demand of myself more courtesy towards my companions andfriends, and indeed towardsstrangers as well. The smallest courtesies along the rough roadsof lifeare like the little birds that sing to us all winter long, and make thatseason of ice andsnow more endurable. Finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if that were the solepurpose of life, I would , if I were a boy again, I would still try harder to make others happy.
