高中英语课外阅读(一)Stars rise from the eastFINALLY, the wait is over. Much to the excitement of fans, South Korean boy band Dong Bang Shin Ki released their new album, Mirotic, on September 29. Once again, the five boys have displayed their appeal (吸引力) with powerful beats (节拍) and memorable tunes (曲调).The title of the leading song, Mirotic, comes from the Korean word "miro" which means "maze" (迷宫) and the English suffix (后缀) "tic". "It is meant to describe the kind of feeling one has when he falls in love with someone at first sight," said member U-Know (郑允浩). "It's like being trapped in a maze."It is reported that the album has sold 90,000 copies two days after its release. It has risen to No 1 on the weekly chart in South Korea. While you enjoy the catchy song, don't miss the band's trademark dancing moves. This time Dong Bang Shin Ki worked with famous dance choreographer (舞蹈编排) Kenny Wormald, who once cooperated with American pop stars including Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera. The band began working on the new record in early 2007 and didn't finish until June this year. "We have plunged (投入) ourselves into the producing work. We see the album as an opportunity to show our fans that we have made progress on adaily basis," said member Xiah (金俊秀). "We won't let them down."It is this aspiring (有抱负的) attitude that keeps the band going in the highly competitive entertainment world. u The band never sets boundaries (边界) to their music styles. Since their 2003 debut (首次登台), they have tried pop, R&B and ballads (民歌). After winning the hearts of thousands of teenagers across Asia, they haven't slow down. This year, Dong Bang Shin Ki has starred in two TV dramas, Dating on Earth and Heaven's Postal Delivery Man. The boys are sure to ride the wave of South Korean pop culture.高中英语课外阅读(二)Changing habitsSONG Yinan, 16, used to hate drinking milk for breakfast. But the Taiyuan girl began drinking it because her mom, as well as many others, said that milk was good for her growing body. Besides, milk and bread made up a convenient (方便的) diet that helped save her parents a lot of time after Song entered junior high and had to arrive at school early in the morning. Hence (从此), Mengniu and Yili became her favorite brands (牌子) of morning milk and yoghurt after dinner. However, she has been forced to change her diet since the recent milk crisis (危机). Many best-selling home milk brands such as Mengniu, Yili and Bright were discovered to contain melamine (三聚氰胺), which is usually used to make plastic (塑料). The bad milk products have sickened more than 53,000 babies and killed four.“I shifted (转向) t o rice porridge,” she said. “My mom has to get up at 5:50 am to prepare my breakfast and make sure that it cools down when I get up.”Song has become addicted (上瘾的) to milk, so she doesn’t quite enjoy her morning meal these days although she knows that it’s a tiring job for her working mom.“I’ll turn back to Mengniu and Yili when they finally improve their products,” she said. However, right now Song’s mom tries to adjust (调整) her eating habits by cooking different foods. Besides rice porridge, noodles, egg drop soup and soybean milk are prepared to diversify (使多样化) her breakfast.“I’m considering buying a soybean grinder (豆浆机), but the prices of soybean grinders are scaling up (攀升) these days,” complained her mother.Beijing student Huang Shuang’s family has a grinder, and soybean milk has become a regular (通常的) recipe in the family during the weekends. From Monday to Friday, the 16-year-old has given up drinking Mengniu for Sanyuan, the only big brand that passed the quality test two weeks ago. The milk crisis has also warned her to develop a cautious (谨慎的) habit when shopping for food.“I have started to pay attention to when and where my purchases (所购商品) were made,” Huang said.高中英语课外阅读(三)Future has arrivedHAS English football finally found a new star? A few days ago, 19-year-old Theo Walcott came onto the scene by scoring a hat-trick (帽子戏法) for England in a 4-1 victory over Croatia.Walcott’s lightning (闪电) speed and accurate (准确的) shooting have turned the teenager into an overnight (一夜成名的) star. Many think he is a new dawn for the England team.It was symbolic (象征意义的) that Walcott's goals came from the right-wing (右侧). The position had been played by "golden boy" David Beckham for more than 10 years. No longer were the cheers for Beckham. The fans' hopes now rested on the shoulders of Walcott. The teenager's rise to fame (成名) has not been completely out of the blue. He was part of England's World Cup team in 2006, but he did not get to play a match. He has also spent over two years at Arsenal, where he is fast becoming a key player. But few were expecting the wonderful performance on September 10. The teenager was the first England player to score three goals in a game since Michael Owen did so seven years ago.Although England is full of superstars, they have a poor record in major tournaments (比赛). But things are beginning to change. The win against Croatia was sweet revenge (复仇). Croatia was the team which knocked England out of Euro 2008.England fans begin to hope for World Cup victory in South Africa in 2010. England has not lifted the trophy (奖杯) since 1966.But before England fans get too carried away, they must remember that placing a country's hopes on one teenager is dangerous.Walcott's club manager, Arsene Wen ger, warned (警告) that the 19-year-old cannot be expected to shine in every game.Still, with less than two years until the World Cup, England's fans are starting to dream.。

On the contrary, I have more and more fans in China," Yano says. The 33-year-old says that even though most of his characters meet miserable ends, he doesn't get fed up with it."I didn't develop a deep understanding of the war until I came to China, because there are seldom movies or television programs about the war in Japan," he says."Because of shooting TV shows, I have been to many places where the war took place. The more I learn about it, the more ashamed I feel. 1. “Live” From Y our Living Room!Sherry, a young friend of mine, suffers from insomnia (失眠) but she’s found a new way to cope with her sleeplessness. Instead of just tossing and turning in bed all night or reading a book, she turns on the computer in her living room and connects with other night owls through a live streaming (网络直播) app. As she hums (哼唱) along to pop tunes or talks about her day, people will post messages on her computer screen and sometimes even send her virtual gifts.Sherry is just one of hundreds of millions who have been drawn to live streaming, the hottest new trend in social media, which lets people share their lives spontaneously in real time. Live streaming, itself, isn’t new. People have been able to watch spor ts events and lectures live online for years. But with new apps that became available in 2007, viewers can now interact with what they see on the screen by posting questions and comments, and this has turned ordinary people, like Sherry, into stars of their own reality TV series. However, this new trend has also drawn the attention of government regulators who are concerned about the content of some live streaming broadcasts. In April, 19 live streaming platforms were convicted of allowing “improper” content to be broadcast. Defining “improper” can be difficult, but, generally, it means anything that has to do with sex or politics or is considered morally harmful. And there is now a new law that requires live streaming apps such as Douyu, YY and Yingke to hold a license to operate and to keep recordings of broadcasts and on-screen comments. My friend Sherry has nothing to fear from the government regulators. If anything, her broadcasts are extremely dull (sorry Sherry!), as are most people’s broadcasts. But dullness is a small problem compared with the bigger problem of letting strangers see too much of your personal life. You’ve probably been warned about giving out personal information online and the same is true with live streaming. It can be dangerous. I f you’re not careful, strangers can find out where you live, where you go to school and where you spend your free time.Broadcasting live from your living room can be fun, but remember to be safe and please, please, please … don’t be dull!Choose the best answer.1.Paragraph 1 mainly describes a person who __________.A. fails to sleep soundly at nightB. likes sharing interesting stories with othersC. is attracted to live streamingD. is ashamed of singing songs before a large audience2.It can be learned from the article that __________.A. live streaming is not popular with grown-upsB. live streaming has nothing to do with politicsC. live streaming does no harm to teenagersD. live streaming has existed for nearly a decade3.The government regulators have made several laws to make sure __________.A. the content of live streaming broadcasts is appropriateB. the quality of live streaming apps is excellentC. the live streaming apps are not available to teenagersD. the users of live streaming apps do not make comments4. The29-year-old finallyearned back all his hardwork when he won BestLeading Actor for his rolein the popular TV seriesIn Time With You (《我可能不会爱你》) at the 47thGolden Bell Awards, which was held in Taipei on Oct 26.From a very young age, we have a dream, whether it’s to be a painter, a scientist or a writer. But the desire (渴望) to paint, discover or tell stories fades (消褪) as we grow up, until that moment of finding our deep calling hits us.For Chen, this came when he was discovered by director Yee Chih-Yen in front of an ice cream store at the age of 19. His first taste of fame with the well-received drama showed him what he really wanted to be.However, show business didn’t favor him instantly (立刻). Fame was not of interest to him as his rule for picking roles was to try something new each time.Over the next ten years he engaged (使……忙碌) himself in genres as different as fantasy (魔幻) action in The Twins Effect II (2004), horror (恐怖片) in The Eye 10 (2005) and coming-of-age drama in Buddha Mountain (2010).Nothing made much of an impact until he successfully played a thoughtful and dedicated (忠心的) partner in a relationship of undeclared love (暗恋) with his best friend (played by Best Actress winner Ariel Lin). The TV drama was the biggest winner at the awards ceremony (仪式), sweeping seven awards out of its eight nominations (提名).Like his winning role, Li Daren, critics say Chen is just like a fine wine that will get better with age. There’s something about the way he carries himself – that sincere and down-to-earth demeanor (气质) fans can’t help but fall for. Many believe the Golden Bell trophy (奖杯) will take Chen’s acting career to new heights. As apedestrian (行人), what do you do?The rule says “stop and wait,” but weoften see groups of people runningred lights.Internet users have jokingly namedthis phenomenon “the Chinese -stylestreet crossing”. While many peoplecriticize it as bad manners, recentresearch reveals (揭示) anotherpossible reason – the duration (持续时间) of red lights in China exceeds (超过)what people can mentally bear.“Pedestrians have a maximum (最大) bearable (可忍受的) waiting time in their mind,” Ni Ying, a member of a research team at TongjiUniversity’s School of Transportation Engineering, was quoted (引述) by Xinhua News Agency as saying. “If they wait longer than that, they will be more likely to ignore the light.”From 2008 to 2010, Ni’s team carried out research on pedestrians’ waiting times at various road crossings. They found a correlation (相互关系) between running red lights and the length of time they had to A group of pedestrians jaywalk across a road in Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi province. CHINA DAILYwait before the light changed. They concluded that, on average, Chinese can wait for the traffic lights no longer than 70 seconds, and in downtown areas this number could extend (扩大) to 90 seconds. Many countries work out pedestrians’ maximum bearable waiting time and use it to design traffic lights, according to Ni. For example, researchers found that it is 60 seconds for Germans and 45 seconds for Britons. Seldom does a red light in these countries exceed the limits. But the duration of red lights in China often exceeds the 70 or 90 second limit. Take Beijing for example. At Zhongguancun Avenue a red light lasts longer than 2 minutes, during which you could finish reading a short story on Teens. Pedestrians are then given just 30 seconds to cross the street.“I stop for red lights. But if I’m really in a hu rry or the traffic interval (区间) is long enough for me to cross, I move slowly forward (向前) seconds before the light turns green,” said Qi Xin, 17, living in Fengtai district in Beijing. However, the long waiting time cannot serve as an excuse for breaking the rules, commentator Li Zhiyong wrote on the People’s Daily.“As long as the design of traffic lights remains the same, everyone should obey the rules, otherwise (否则) the country will be out of order and danger will be incurred for pedestrians,” wrote L i.Roman Holiday without the snacksIN the movie Roman Holiday, AudreyHepburn shows the world what aromantic (浪漫的) scene is all about:wandering around Rome with a loverby your side and an ice cream in hand. But those who want to experience thismay now have to pay a large price.Rome’s city council (议会) passed anew law in October. 高中英语课外阅读材料经典高中英语课外阅读材料(一)加倍重视自己的价值Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold.Amulberry leaf(桑叶) touched with the genius of man becomes silk.A field of clay touched with the genius of man becomes a castle.A Cyprus tree touched with the genius of man becomes a shrine.A cut of sheep's hair touched with the genius of man becomes raiment for a king.If it is possible for leaves and clay and wood and hair to have their value multiplied a hundred, yea a thousandfold by man, cannot I do the same with the clay which bears my name?Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold.I am liken to a grain of wheat which faces one of three futures. The wheat can be placed in a sack and dumped in a stall until it is fed to swine. Or it can be ground to flour and made into bread. Or it can be placed in the earth and allowed to grow until its golden head dividesand produces a thousand grains from the one.I am liken to a grain of wheat with one difference. The wheat cannot choose whether it be fed to swine, ground for bread, or plantedto multiply. I have a choice and I will not let my life be fed to swine nor will I let it be ground under the rocks of failure and despair to be broken open and devoured by the will of others.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. To grow and multiply it is necessary to plant the wheat grain in the darkness of the earth and my failures, my despairs, my ignorance, and my inabilities are the darkness in which I have been planted inorder to ripen. Now, like the wheat grain which will sprout and blossom only if it is nurtured with rain and sun and warm winds, I too must nurture my body and mind to fulfill my dreams. But to grow to fullstature the wheat must wait on the whims of nature. I need not wait forI have the power to choose my own destiny.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. And how will I accomplish this? First I will set goals for the day, the week, the month, the year, and my life. Just as the rain must fall before the wheat will crack its shell and sprout, so must I have objectives before my life will crystallize. Insetting my goals I will consider my best performance of the past and multiply it a hundredfold. This will be the standard by which I will live in the future. Never will I be of concern that my goals are too high for is it not better to aim my spear at the moon and strike only an eagle than to arm my spear atthe eagle and strike only a rock?Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. The height of my goals will not hold me in awe though I may stumble often before they are reached. If I stumble I will rise and my falls will not concern me for all men must stumble often to reach the hearth. Only a worm is free from the worry of stumbling. I am not a worm.I am not an onion plant. I am not a sheep. I am a man. Let others builda cave with their clay. I will build a castle with mine.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. And just as the sun must warm the earth to bring forth the seedling of wheat so, too, will the words on these scrolls warm my life and turn my dreams into reality. Today I will surpass every action which I performed yesterday. I will climb today's mountain to the utmost of my ability yet tomorrow I will climb higher than today, and the next willbe higher than tomorrow. To surpass the deeds of others is unimportant; to surpass my own deeds is all.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. And just as the warm wind guides the wheat to maturity, the same winds will carry my voice to those who will listen and my words will announce my goals. Once spoken I dare not recall them lest I lose face.I will be as my own prophet and though all may laugh at my utterances they will hear my plans, they will know my dreams; and thus there willbe no escape for me until my words become accomplished deeds.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold.I will commit not the terrible crime of aiming too low.I will do the work that a failure will not do.I will always let my reach exceed my grasp.I will never be content with my performance in the market.I will always raise my goals as soon as they are attained.I will always strive to make the next hour better than this one.I will always announce my goals to the world.Yet, never will I proclaim my accomplishments. Let the world, instead, approach me with praise and may I have the wisdom to receive it in humility.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. One grain of wheat when multiplied a hundredfold will produce a hundred stalks. Multiply these a hundredfold, ten times, and they will feed all the cities of the earth. Am I not more than a grain of wheat?Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. And when it is done I will do it again, and again, and therewill be astonishment and wonder at my greatness as the words of these scrolls are fulf in me.高中英语课外阅读材料(二)世界上最遥远的距离The furthest distance in the worldIs not between life and deathBut when I stand in front of youYet you don't know thatI love youThe furthest distance in the worldIs not when i stand in font of youYet you can't see my loveBut when undoubtedly knowing the love from bothYet cannotBe togehterThe furthest distance in the worldIs not being apart while being in loveBut when plainly can not resist the yearningYet pretendingYou have never been in my heartThe furthest distance in the worldIs notBut using one's indifferent heartTo dig an uncrossable riverFor the one who loves you世界上最遥远的距离,不是生与死而是我就站在你的面前,你却不知道我爱你世界上最遥远的距离,不是我站在你面前,你却不知道我爱你而是明明知道彼此相爱,却不能在一起世界上最遥远的距离,不是明明知道彼此相爱,却不能在一起而是明明无法抵挡这股想念,却还得故意装作丝毫没有把你放在心里世界上最遥远的距离,不是明明无法抵挡这股想念,却还得故意装作丝毫没有把你放在心里而是用自己冷漠的心,对爱你的人掘了一条无法跨越的沟渠高中英语课外阅读材料(三)难忘的野营When I was a boy, I belonged to the Boy Scouts so I used to go camping every summer, and once something happened which I have never been able to explain. We were camping in a place above a river. After arriving, we all rushed down to the river and had a swim. Standing by the river, we noticed that it was surrounded(环绕) by cliffs(悬崖). If someone wanted to reach the river at this point, he had to walk past our camp.Several days later, the scoutmaster had to be away for a day. That afternoon, we had supper early. We were sitting round the fire, eating and talking, when a man walked past and went down towards the river. We all felt that this man looked very strange, but, because each of us was afraid of looking very stupid, no one said anything. We ate rather slowly, taking as long as possible. After finishing, we collected our plates together so that we could take them to the river where we always washed them. But no one moved towards the rivere stood looking at each other ashamed. Then all shouting at once, we began talking about the man who had walked past us. We agreed how strange he looked and we wondered what he could be doing by the river. We knew that he could only return by passing through our camp.An hour passed. Then one of the boys suggested we shouldcreep(悄悄移动) down by the river so that we could see what the man was doing. Moving very slowly and keeping in the shadow, we crept down towards the bank. One boy climbed a tree so that he could see everything clearly. He called to us that there was no one there, so we ran down to the bank, looking everywhere carefully. We could not understand where the man had gone. When it got dark, we went back to our camp feeling bewildered. We told the scoutmaster what had happened in the evening. Smiling, he doubted that we had seen the man, but finally suggested we go and look again. We did, but there was no one there. Many years have passed, but I still remember it as if it were yesterday. What did we see? I do not know.。

高中英语课外阅读文章(一)Hillary tours AsiaUS Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discusses trade and investment while on her Asia tour.US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, arrived in China last Friday, after stopping in Japan, Indonesia and the Republic of Korea, on her Asia tour. She met with President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao over the weekend. They discussed trade, investment (投资), China's 4-trillion-yuan stimulus (经济刺激) package and environmental issues. The China-US relationship is one of the most important international relationships in the world today. China is America's second-largest trading partner, after Canada. The US is also China's second largest trading partner, behind the EU.Last year, the US imported $252.3 billion worth of Chinese goods, while exporting $81.4 billion to China. In recent years, China's economic growth has given it new power on the diplomatic (外交的) front. It continues to be a key player in international attempts to seek a peaceful solution to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (朝鲜的) nuclear issue. And the US and the United Nations need China's help to solve the Iranian (伊朗的) nuclear issue.Climate change has become one place where the US can establish a positive working relationship with China. The two countries are the world's top greenhouse gas emitters (排放源).China hopes to cut its greenhouse-gas emissions through technology, something for which it needs US help. While the US has a long list of issues on which it wants China's support, China has a list of its own. China wants a greater say in the decision-making of the International Monetary Fund (国际货币基金组织), and tougher regulations on the financial system in wealthy countries to prevent future problems. The global financial crisis (危机) is likely to overshadow (使……失色) the human rights issue for now. Trade, security (安全), and environmental issues will be the key issues in the relationship between China and the US in the years ahead.BONUSWhen we address people formally we address them using their title before either their fullname or by their surname. For example Hillary Clinton is addressed as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or as US Secretary of State Clinton.高中英语课外阅读文(二)One of the greatestCRISTIANO Ronaldo has said new rumors (谣传) that he will move to Real Madrid are "lies". This follows months of speculation (猜测) over whether he will stay at Manchester United."Whoever says that [I want to move] is a liar because I am happy at Manchester United, I want to stay," Ronaldo said. "I feel at home here."In mid 2008, he announced a plan to move to Real Madrid, and there were rumors that the Spanish were willing to pay up to 70 million pounds for him. But the Red Devils wouldn’t let him go. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson even threatened to leave him off the field during games if he didn’t stop trying to negotiate a deal.On the field, it’s been an a mazing year for the 23-year-old winger. He had a stunning (惊人的) season for Manchester United in the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League, leading the team to victory in both, with an unheard-of 42 goals. The fact that he was the Premier League’s top scorer is even more impressive because he is a midfielder and not a striker. Then, earlier this month, Ronaldo was crowned European Footballer of the Year. He became only the third Portuguese star to win the honor. It hasn’t been all smooth sailing f or Ronaldo. On the field, he’s been accused of diving, or pretending other players have fouled (对……作了犯规行为) him. His performances for the Portuguese national team have also been criticized. Some critics say Ronaldo "chokes" in big games, and finds it difficult to perform against better opponents. A missed penalty (点球) in the European Cup final almost spelled disaster for his team. The pressure is now on for Ronaldo to redeem (挽救) himself and return to form. Sir Alex Ferguson maintains (主张) that he will be one of the greatest football stars the world has ever seen."There are a lot of things in his favor to go on and become a legend. The answers will come in the next few years."。

高中英语补充课外阅读(一)All about the musicWHAT do you usually expect from a pop star's concert? Dazzling (眩目的) stage design, mysterious guest singers or sensational (哗众取宠的) costumes? The answer is yes for most singers. But no when it comes to David Tao's concerts. "I won't invite guests to perform. I won't dance, take off my clothes or dress up like a peacock (孔雀) to attract attention," Tao said. He held a concert on March 1 in Beijing.Tao insisted a concert should offer nothing more than music. "Glaring (耀眼的) concerts are easy to do but empty. To me, music and interaction come first."Tao's tour will include Hong Kong, Singapore and some other cities in China. It is expected to end around June.Tao has been on the music scene since 1997. Quality is the word that can best describe his works. With six albums in 10 years, the 38-year-old singer is not prolific (多产的), but he has achieved much more than other Chinese singers who have produced 10 or more albums in a short time.Tao is called the "Godfather of R&B" in China and has been a trendsetter (创新者) in China's music industry. His albums have won various awards in Asia for his socially conscious (有觉悟的) lyrics, simple rhythms (节奏) and creative mix of traditionalsounds, like Peking Opera and traditional Chinese musical instruments.Tao's parents were well-known entertainers in Taiwan. His father was an actor, singer and composer (作曲), while his mother was a Peking Opera artist."I grew up listening to the most fashionably mixed types of music with my father playing Elvis Presley's (猫王) songs in one room and my mother singing Peking Opera in another,"u Tao said jokingly.Tao said he will release a new album after the tour and then he will switch roles to become a film director. Preparation for the movie has already begun and it will be released in 2009."After the concert, I will switch my focus to that. I hope I can make it one thing after another."高中英语补充课外阅读(二)Fun for all the familyTWENTY-FIVE years ago director Stephen Spielberg captured the hearts of Western audiences (观众) with his family classic (经典片), E.T. Now his Hong Kong director Stephen Chow is trying to do the same trick in China.Chow's latest movie CJ7 (《长江七号》), in cinemas now, is a heart-warming story about a poor migrant worker (外来务工者) and his son. When a strange alien enters their lives, father and son learn a lesson about the value of family.Chow hopes his movie will help to make family films more popular in China.Family films have been the main part of the Hollywood market for the last 40 years. They have given audiences movies like E.T., Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park. However, there are few of these movies in China, where expensive history films are morepopular.A family film is not simply a children's movie. It is a film that is not only appropriate for children, but appeals to the whole family.According to Raymound Zhou, a famous film critic, these films are rare in China because "very few families go to the cinema together". Because of this, there is little demand for movies that appeal to the whole family. However, in the West, it is common for the family to sit down and watch a movie together. Tim Bridges, from London, says: "I love it at Christmas when I sit down and watch a movie with my family."All family films contain similar messages about being honest; remaining positive and learning there is more to life than money. According to the American movie reviewer (评论家), Dave Johnson, this is because "When parents watch a movie, they want their children to be learning good values".Just like when the alien in Spielberg's E.T. phones home to makes contact with his family, Chow will hope Chinese audiences are tuned in and ready to receive his family movie message.。

高中英语短篇课外阅读1What danger? Hoodies just keep you warmWHEN one Olympic host city passes the torch on to the next, the new host city usually stages a celebration of national identity (特点).After 12 months of secret planning, London has finally revealed (透露) just what will happen at its handover (交接) performance in the closing ceremony (闭幕式) of the Beijing Olympic Games: The unruly (桀骜不驯的) spirit of Britain’s "hoodie" culture will take center stage. The hoodie, short for "hooded sweatshirt", is upper-body clothing with a hood (兜帽). It has been popular among young people. In the UK, however, hoodies have been the subject of much criticism as well. Some thieves have used the hood to hide their identity from monitoring (监控) cameras in shopping centers. A hoodie with a baseball cap has become a trademark (标志) of the "chavs" — young people from a low social class who are often assumed (认为) to engage in criminal (犯罪的) activity.Gradually, however, people have begun calling for a tolerant (宽容的) attitude towards hoodies. In 2005, Coombeshead College in southwest England allowed the hoodie to become part of the boys school uniform. In July 2006, David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, said: "The hoodie is a response to a problem, not a problem in itself. Hoodies are a way to stay invisible (隐身的) in the street. In a dangerous environment, the best thing to do is keep your head down, blend in."The emergence (出现) of hoodie dancing has also helped people to see hoodies in a positive light. "We use dance to challenge the negative image of youth culture," said Kenrick Sandy, a choreographer (舞蹈指导) of the hoodie dancing group Boy Blue. "Many people have stereotypes and think that we''re a threat just because we wear hoodies, but that''s ridiculous. A hoodie doesn''t make you dangerous – it just keeps you warm."高中英语短篇课外阅读2Lavigne is all about musicWHO are the artists singing all day long on your MP3 player? They may be Jay Chou, Angela Chang or S.H.E. But when it comes to a foreign singer, Avril Lavigne is the one who is worth listening to.The Canadian star's hit single Girlfriend was named the top download of 2007 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (国际唱片业协会). She will be touring China this month for her "The Best Damn Tour" concerts. It is reported that the pop/rock princess will play at Guangzhou first on September 27, followed by other cities including Chengdu (September 30), Shanghai (October 4) and Beijing (October 6). Lavigne, 25, will perform her most popular hits in the concerts, including Complicated, Girlfriend, and My Happy Ending.Lavigne has been on the music scene for six year. She has proven that she is not simply another pretty face. Lavigne prefers to wear loose (宽松的) trousers, old T-shirts and a frown (皱眉).That's not like the tight* clothes and sweet smiles of many pop stars.Lavigne knew that she could never be like Britney Spears. In her high school days, "I was only around guys," she said. "I hung out with guys, playing hockey (曲棍球) and sometimes getting in fights. My band members were all guys."It was not until she got older that she started acting more girly. "From then to now, I look really different — but that's called growing up," she said.Lavigne was only 15 when she was discovered. At that time she had no idea how to make an album. "A career just came early for me. I was trying to figure out this life," she said. "My friends still don't know if they want to be a teacher or a doctor. When I talk to them, they'll tell me they have exams the next day."So what does Lavigne think about life? "Life is like a roller coaster (过山车). Live it, be happy," she said.高中英语短篇课外阅读3Getting lost across the pondDAVID Beckham, one of the world's most famous athletes, was at a press conference (新闻发布会). He held his new Los Angeles Galaxy jersey (球衣) in his hand. Beckham said he couldn't wait to play football in LA. Then he stopped, laughed and said, "I mean soccer."Beckham, the England native, is truly an international man. So he remembered that while the games are the same, some of the sports terms are different in the United States than in Britain. Now, Beckham can't forget that while in England he plays football on a pitch (球场), in the US he plays soccer on a field. After the game is over Beckham might want to change out of his uniform and into regular (平常的) clothes. In the US he'll bewearing sneakers and perhaps a light sweater. But if he were back home in England he'd be wearing trainers and a jumper. After training, Beckham might need to relax. So one of his American teammates might hand Beckham a paddle (球拍) and challenge him to a ping-pong game. Even here Beckham could be confused. In Britain they call it table tennis and play with a bat.But Beckham is rich and famous so he would never get upset. After playing ping-pong he might try to become really American and go watch a baseball game. Of course, if he didn't know better he'd ask to watch "rounders", which is what the British call baseball.Of course, while these word differences might seem confusing, Beckham probably thinks they are no big deal. Remember, he used to play in Spain. Hay muchacho (Oh, boy)!!。

高中学生英语课外阅读(一)Hip-hop spiritTURN on Channel V and you might find a singer in a baseball cap, baggy jeans and a big T-shirt rapping. Listening to hip-hop, it''s easy to swing your body to the rhythm (节奏), even if you have no idea what the lyrics are about.Hip-hop today is a worldwide movement. According to American professor S. Craig Watkins, hip-hop music is "a way to behave and an attitude". He says hip-hop is a rebellious (叛逆的) voice that resonates (共鸣) with young people. For Wang Liang, a 25-year-old DJ, hip-hop is a form of self-expression. "It''s free, like rock ''n'' roll. We can talk about our lives, what we''re thinking about and what we feel," Wang said in an interview with the New York Times. While American rappers have been popular in China since the 1990s, homegrown rap didn''t gain a following until a decade later. The group Yincang (meaning hidden) is one of the pioneers of Chinese rap. It is made up of music lovers from both sides of the Pacific Ocean: a Beijinger, a Chinese-Canadian and two Americans."The big change was when rappers started writing lyrics in Chinese, so people could understand," said Zhong Cheng, 27, a member of the group who was raised in Canada but born in Beijing, where he returned in 1997. "Before that, kids listened to hip-hop in English but maybe less than 1 percent could actuallyunderstand it."Yincang''s first hit song was In Beijing. It sets a melody (旋律) played on the Chinese traditional music instrument the erhu against a hip-hop beat. The song is an insider''s look at Beijing''s sights and sounds, such as traditional Siheyuan courtyard complexes, the bar area in Houhai, the Guijie food street and the clothes market near the zoo. However, making Chinese hip-hop is still relatively profitless. Members of Yincang still struggle to pay the bills after seven years together. But they haven''t stopped making hip-hop."When I met Jeremy Johnston (a member of the group), we were both so inspired by people here," said Zhong. "We wanted to drop some Chinese rhymes for the locals. From that day, we haven''t stopped rhyming. And we won''t stop."BONUSHip-hop is the culture from which rap emerged. Now the terms "rap" and "hip-hop" are, most of the time, interchangeable.Hip-hop culture: it''s a street culture that originated in the South Bronx, a district in New York City, in the mid 1970s. Hip-hop featured a group of uniquely dressed teenagers, rap music, breakdancing and graffiti art.高中学生英语课外阅读(二)Different ways we care for the deadTANG Dynasty writer Du Mu once wrote in a poem titled Qingming: "The ceaseless drizzle drips all the dismal day; So broken-hearted fares the traveler on the way。

2018高中英语课外阅读材料集锦(阅读+单词学习)2018高考英语课外阅读材料【每两天一篇—阅读+单词学习】Unit One: How to Improve Your Study Habits TEXT Want to know how to improve your grades without having to spend more time studying? Sounds too good to be true? Well, read on... How to Improve Your Study Habits Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. You do well enough in school, but you probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily the case, however. You can receive better grades if you want to. Yes, even students of average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here\’s how: 1. Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of your time. Fill in committed time such as eating, sleeping, meetings, classes, etc. Then decide on good, regular times for studying. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn\’t occupy all of the free time on the schedule. It\’s impo rtant to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well. This weekly schedule may not solve all of your problems, but it will make you more aware of how you spend your time. Furthermore, it will enable you to plan your activities so that you have adequate time for both work and play. 2. Find a good place to study. Choose one place for your study area. It may be a desk or a chair at home or in the school library, but it should be comfortable, and it should not have distractions. When you begin to work, youshould be able to concentrate on the subject. 3. Skim before you read. This means looking over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized. Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions. Skimming helps double your reading speed and improves your comprehension as well. 4. Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Sit where you can see and hear well. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says. 5. Study regularly. Go over your notes as soon as you can after class. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused about. Read about these points in your textbook. If you know what theteacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material too. This will help you understand the next class. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on test. 6. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won\’t end if you don\’t pass a test, so don\’t worry excessively about a single test. Tests provide grades, but they also let you know what you need to spend more time studying, and they help make your knowledge permanent. There are other techniques that might help you with your studying. Only a few have been mentioned here. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these. Talk with your classmates about their study techniques. Share with themsome of the techniques you have found to be helpful. Improving your study habits will improve your grades. 第1 页共60 页NEW WORDS average n. ordinary 普通的;中等的intelligence n. ability to learn and understand 智力necessarily ad. inevitably 必定case n. what has really happened; actual condition 实情additional a. added 附加的,额外的n. addition weekly a. done or happening every week 每周的;一周一次的schedule n. timetable 时间表chart n. This is the story of that adventure. Sailing Round the World Before he sailedround the world single-handed, Francis Chichester had already surprised his friends several times. He had tried to fly round the world but failed. That was in 1931. The years passed. He gave up flying and began sailing. He enjoyed it greatly. Chichester was already 58 years old when he won the first solo transatlantic sailing race. His old dream of going round the world came back, but this time he would sail. His friends and doctors did not think he could do it, as he had lung cancer. But Chichester was determined to carry out his plan. In August, 1963, at the age of nearly sixty-five, an age when many men retire, he began the greatest voyage of his life. Soon, he was away in this new 16-metre boat, Gipsy Moth. Chichester followed the route of the great nineteenth century clipper ships. But the clippers had had plenty of crew. Chicheater did it all by himself, even afterthe main steering device had been damaged by gales. Chichester covered 14, 100 miles before stopping in Sydney, Australia. This was more than twice the distance anyone had previously sailed alone. He arrived in Australia on 12 December, just 107 days out from England. He received a warm welcome from the Australians and from his family who had flown there to meet him. On shore, Chichester could not walk without help. Everybody said the same thing: he had done enough; he must not go any further. But he did not listen. After resting in Sydney for a few weeks, Chichester set off once more in spite of his friends\’ attempts to dissuade him. The second half of his voyage was by far the more dangerous part, during which he sailed round the treacherous Cape Horn. On 29 January he left Australia. The next night, the blackest he had ever known, thesea became so rough that the boat almost turned over. Food, clothes, and broken glass were all mixed together. Fortunately, bed and went to sleep. When he woke up, the sea had become calm the nearest person he could contact by radio, unless there was a ship nearby, Wild be on an island 885 miles away. After succeeding in sailing round Cape Horn, Chichester sent the following radio message to London:Horn and that sinister Southern Ocean again.Just before 9 o\’clo ck on Sunday evening 28 May, 1967, he arrived back in England, where a quarter of a million people were waiting to welcome him. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him with the very sword that Queen Elizabeth I had sailed round the world for the first time. The whole voyage 第3 页共60 页from England and back had covered 28, 500 miles. It had taken him nine months , of which thesailing time was 226 days. He had done what he wanted to accomplish. Like many other adventurers, Chichester had experienced fear and conquered it. In doing so, he had undoubtedly learnt something about himself. Moreover, in the modern age when human beings depend so much on machines, he had given men throughout the world new pride. Everyone was so kind to the old lady on her birthday. Surely her daughter would make an even bigger effort to please he? The Present It was the old lady\’s birthday. She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from the ground floor brought up her letters on therare occasions when anything came. Enid had never married, but had seemed content to live with her mother, and teach in a primary school round the corner. One evening, however, Enid said, Mother. Tomorrow I have to go into hospital--just a minor operation, I\’ll soon be home.In the morning she went, but never came back--she died on the operating table. Myra came to the funeral, and in her efficient way arranged for Mrs. Morrison to come in and light the fire and give the old lady her breakfast. Two years ago that was, and since then Myrahad been to see her mother three times, but her husband never. The old lady was eight today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps--perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday, another decade lined or endured just as you chose to look at it. Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of colour brightened her cheeks. She was excited--like a child. She would enjoy her day. The old man and the seaOn the coast of Cuba lived an old fisherman. He was thin and had many deep lines in the back of his neck. His skin was very brown, and his hands were marked by pulling heavy fish at the end of ropes. But all these marks were old. Every part of him seemed old except his eyes. These were cheerful and the same color as the sea.For eighty days he did not catch any fish. People said that the old man was unlucky. But the old man still loved the sea. He was still strong and a good fisherman. On the eighty—fifth day the old man sailed farther out to sea than any of the other boats. He sailed to where the water was very deep. Then he felt fishing—line being pulled gently by a big fish which was swimming very deep in the water. The fish was so powerful that it pulled the boat after it. It took the small boat far out to sea. The old man could no longer see the land.“Fish,”he said softly, aloud, “I'll stay with you until I am dead.”The old man pulled the line a little tighter, but he did not dare to pull it suddenly. The fish might jump and escape. Or it might dive down into the sea and pull the boat after it. But the fish was strong and brave. It pulled the boat on and on.When the fish rose at last to the top of the water, the old man sawthat it was two feet longer than his boat. The old man had seen many great fish, but this one was the greatest fish he had ever seen. It was also the most beautiful. On the morning of the third day, the end came. Tired and full of pain, the old man threw his harpoon into the heart of the great fish. The fish rose high out of the water, showing all its power and beauty. The next moment it was dead.Slowly and painfully, the old man tied the fish to the side of the boat. Then he turned back and sailed toward the distant shore. He sailed well and he looked often at the huge fish. Then the first shark came. The old man killed it, but he lost his harpoon and all his rope. Two hours later two more sharks came. The old man fought them with his oar and his knife. Then he used a stick. Then the tiller. But he knew he was beaten. When he sailed into the little harbour and pulled his boat on shore, no fish was left. Only the giant white backbone. The next morning the fishermen in the village gathered round the small boat. They measured the big bone of the fish. It was eighteen feet long. "what a fish it was," someone said. "there has never been such a fish.。

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.Four wives in our livesThere was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He's very proud of her and always wanted to show off her to his friends. However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other men.He too, loved his 2nd wife. She is a very considerate person, always patient and in factis the merchant's confidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned tohis 2nd wife and she would always help him out and guide him through difficult times.精选文库Now, the merchant's 1st wife is a very loyal partner and has made great contributions inmaintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, themerchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly tooknotice of her.One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. Hethought of his luxurious life and told himself, "Now I have 4 wives with me. But when Idie, I'll be alone. How lonely I'll be!"Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothingand showed great care of you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No way!" replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word. The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant's heart. The sad merchantthen asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No!" replied the 3rd wife. "Life is too goodover here! I'm going to remarry when you die!" The merchant's heart sank and turned cold.He then asked the 2nd wife, "I always turned to you for help and you've always helped meout. Now I need your help again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?""I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the 2nd wife. "At the very most, I canonly send you to your grave." The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchantwas devastated. Then a voice called out: "I'll leave with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go."The merchant looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like shesuffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the merchant said, "I should have taken muchbetter care of you while I could have!"Actually, we all have 4 wives in our life. The 4th wife is our body. No matter howmuch time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it'll leave us when we die. Our 3rdwife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others. The 2ndwife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we'realive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave. The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often neglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and sensual pleasure. Guess what? It isactually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. Perhaps it's a good idea tocultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we're on our deathbed to lament.Perhaps it's a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we'reon our death bed to lament.Appointment with loveSix minutes to six, said the clock over the international booth in New York’ s Grand Central Station. The tall young Army lieutenant lifted his sunburned face and narrowedhis eyes to note the exact time. His heart was pounding with a beat. In six minutes he would see thewoman who had filled such a special place in his life for the past 13 months, the woman he had never seen, yet whose written words had sustained him unfailingly.Lieutenant Blandford remembered one day in particular, during the worst of thefighting, when his plane had been caught in the midst of a pack of enemy’ s planes. In one-- 2精选文库of his letters he had confessed to her that he often felt fear, and only a few days before thisbattle he had received her answer:“ Ofyoucoursefear⋯all brave men do. Four minutes to six.A girl passed close to him, and Lieutenant Blandford was surprised. She was wearinga flower, but it was not the little red rose they had agreed upon. Besides, this girl was onlyabout 18, and Hollis Meynell had told him she was 30. “ What of it? ”he had answered.“ I ’ m 32. ” He was 29.His mind went back to that book he had read in the training camp. Of Human Bondage it was; and throughout the book were notes in a woman’ s handwriting. He had never believed that a woman could see into a man ’ s heart so tenderly, so understandingly. Her name was on the book plate: Hollis Meynell. He had got hold a New York City telephone book and found her address. He had written; she had answered. Next da y he hadbeen shipped out, but they had gone on writing. For 13 months she had faithfully replied. When his letters did not arrive, she wrote anyway, and now he believed that he loved her and that she loved him.But she had refused all his pleas to send hi m her photograph. She had explained: ”Ifyou ’ re feeling for me as any reality, what I look like won ’ t matter. Suppose II ’ d always been haunted by the feeling that you had been taking a chance on just that, andthat kind of love would disgust me. Suppose I ’ m plain ( and you must admit that this ismore likely), then I ’ d always fear that you were only going on writing because you werelonely and had no one else. No, don ’ t ask for my picture. When you come to New York, you shall see me and then y ou shall make your decision. ”One minute to six ⋯ he put hard on a cigarette. Then Lieutenant Blandford ’hearts leaped.A young woman was coming towards him. Her figure was long and slim; her blondhair lay back in curls over her delicate ears. Her eyes were as blue as flowers, her lips andchin had a gentle firmness. In her pale-green suit, she was like springtime coming alive. He headed toward her, forgetting to notice that she was wearing no rose, and as he moved,a small, provocative smile curved her lips.“ Going my way, soldier? ” she murmured. He made one step closer to her. Then he saw Hollis Meynell. She was standing almost directly behind the girl, a woman well past 40, her grayinghair tucked under a worn hat. She was more than plump; her thick ankled feet were thrustinto low-heeled shoes. But she wore a red rose on her rumpled coat. The girl in the green suit was walking quickly.Blandford felt as though he were being split into two, so keen was his desire tofollow the girl, yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned and upheld his own; and there she stood. He could see her pale, plumpface was gentle and sensible; her grey eyes had a warm twinkle.’⋯”’ m beautifu-- 3精选文库Lieutenant Blandford did not hesitate. His fingers gripped the worn copy of HumanBondage which was to identify him to her. This would not be love, but it would besomething precious, a friendship that he had been and must ever be grateful ⋯He squared his shoulders, saluted, and held the book out toward the woman, althougheven well while he spoke he fell the bitterness of disappointment. “ I ’Johnm Blandford, and you---you are Miss Meynell. May--- may I take you to dinner? ”The woman smiled. “ I don ’ t know what this is all about, son, ” she answered. “ That young lady in the green suit; she begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said that if youask me to go out with you, I should tell you that she ’ s waiting for you in that restaurantacross the street. She said it was some kind of test. ”Life inspiringA daughter complained to her father about her life and how things were so hard forher. She did not know she was going to make it and want to give up. She was tired offighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose. Her father, a cook, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placedeach on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In one he placed carrots, in the second heplaced eggs, and in the last he placed ground coffee beans. He led them sit and boil, without saying a word. The daughter sucked her teeth and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. In about twenty minutes, he turned off the burners. He fished the carrots out and placedthem in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then he ladled thecoffee out and placed it in a mug. Turning to her, he asked," Darling, what do you see?"“ Carrots, eggs, and coffee. ” she replied. He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that theywere soft. Then he asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, weresoft . Then he asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, sheobserved the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. She smiled as shetasted its rich aroma.“ What does it mean, Father? ” she humbly asked. He explained that each of them had faced the same adversity, boiling water, but eachreacted differently. The carrot was strong, hard, and unrelenting. But after beingsubjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boilingwater, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique ,however. Afterthey were in the boiling water ,they had changed the water .“ Which are you? ” he asked his daughter. When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, anegg or a coffee bean?-- 4。

高中英语课外阅读(一)Captain who has it allCESC Fabregas appears to have it all. He is the star performer for top English premiership (英超) club Arsenal and a multimillionaire at the age of 21. If all of that wasn't enough, on November 24, Fabregas was appointed new captain of the club."It's a proud moment and a great honor," said the Spaniard (西班牙人). "But this is also a big responsibility. Together with my teammates, we have the spirit and commitment (承诺) to get back to winning and fulfill our potential."However, there are people who doubt that Fabregas is too young to shoulder the responsibility. But Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, said: "It's not especially linked with age. Most of the time, responsibilities make you grow, make you become more mature (成熟的) and you deal with the situation."Fabregas is one of rising talents among the young generation of players. He helped Spain to win the European Championship this year and has established himself as a key player for Arsenal. But he does not want to settle for just being a good footballer. He began a correspondence (函授) course in the equivalent (相当于) of A-levels (exams taken by students who want to go to university), fitting his studies around his football duties. "Thereare seven subjects, including math, science, Spanish, English and French. First I have to pass an exam. Then I have to do a course for one year and then I can go to university," he said.Fabregas has not returned to the classroom in the traditional sense. Teachers come to his home to teach him math and science — "they are the most difficult" — for four hours a week. He does some of his tutorials (辅导课) via webcam (摄像头). Much of his time will be spent studying at home or on the road. So, what is the motivation for this highly-paid young man with the football world at his feet? "I think it is good for the future," he said.高中英语课外阅读(二)Brazil's wonder kidIN football, nothing is more valuable than the wonder kid. Managers spend plenty of their time searching for these rare gems (宝石).Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira is one such gem from Brazil. He won the Tuttosport Golden Boy Trophy (奖杯) on December 7. The award is given to the best player in Europe under the age of 21.Anderson plays for Manchester United and he has already won the Premier League (英超) and the Champions League (冠军联赛) with his team. In fact, Anderson even scored a penalty (点球) in the Champions League final.”[He is] 20, with the decision-making, position-taking intelligence of a 30-year-old. Short at 1.76m, yet muscular (强健的) and rapid enough to win most physical battles,” writes Duncan Castles, reporter with Britain''s The Guardian newspaper. And Anderson is glowing (焕发) with self-confidence. ”Scared? I''ve never been scared of anything,” hesaid. ”When the subject is playing football, I''m not scared of anyone. You are there for the football; you are there to have fun, to play.”But in the eyes of Brazilian journalists, Anderson still needs time to mature (成熟). They described him as ”arrogant (傲慢的)”. ”He rolled up to the team''s London hotel in an expensive Audi R9, R&B blaring (鸣响) from the sound system and strode (大踏步) past reporters,” they said.Anderson is honest in his attitude toward money. ”Yes, I like money a lot. Who doesn''t?”.Anderson''s father died in 2001 and by the age of 14, his youth-team salary (薪水) in a local club in Brazil supported his mother, sister and two brothers. ”I became used to being a man very young. I was 15, but already thinking as if I was 22, 23 or 24 and making very tough decisions about my future. I had to help the family, but that was also a responsibility. And that I still do today and hope to be able to do for my family until I am 60.”高中英语课外阅读(三)Spears defines a generationTHE newest generation of American teenagers has been raised on a diet of YouTube, Facebook and American Idol. These inventions are harmless but when combined they have created a culture where teenagers want to be rich and famous and believe everyone should know everything about their lives. The spokesperson for this fame-hungry, talent-less generation is Britney Spears. At a young age, Spears seemed to have it all. She was starring on the Mickey Mouse Club TV show when she was 11. At 18, Spears released her debut album Baby One More Time. The album instantly made Spears a pop icon (偶像). She had millionsof dollars and was on top of the world. But as the saying goes, “the higher you are, the harder you fall.”With fame came an obsession (着魔) into Spears'' personal life. Photographers followed her everywhere she went. Eventually, she couldn''t take it anymore and she made a series of bad decisions. First, she married a high school friend. But the marriage only lasted a matter of hours. Then she married her back-up dancer, Kevin Federline, who was a known playboy. Then she shaved her head and suffered a big breakdown. She did all of this with the world watching. But then her father, Jamie, stepped in and took control. Spears took sometime away from the spotlight to get things in order. Now she is promoting her new album, Circus, which is a good word to describe her life. The CD is currently No 1 in America. It has been a crazy ride for Spears but when judging her, remember that she was once a sweet, young girl whom a lot of people thought they could make money off. Even with all she''s been through, she''s only 27 years old.So for any young person out there, who is posting videos on YouTube and dreaming about becoming famous, remember to be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.。

Sounds too good to be true? Well, read on... How to Improve Your Study HabitsPerhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. You do well enough in school, but you probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily the case, however. You can receive better grades if you want to. Yes,even students of average intelligence can be top studentswithout additional work. Here's how:1. Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of your time. Fill in committed time such as eating, sleeping, meetings, classes, etc. Then decide on good, regular times for studying. Be sure to setaside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn't occupy all of thefree time on the schedule. It's important to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well. This weekly schedule may not solve all of your problems, but it will makeyou more aware of how you spend your time. Furthermore, it will enable you to plan your activities so that you have adequate time for both work and play.2. Find a good place to study. Choose one place for your study area. It may be a desk or a chair at home or in the school library, but it should be comfortable, and it should not have distractions. When you begin to work, you should be able to concentrate on the subject.3. Skim before you read. This means looking over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized. Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions. Skimming helps double your reading speed and improves your comprehension as well.4. Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Sit where you can see and hear well. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.5. Study regularly. Go over your notes as soon as you can after class. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused about. Read about these points inyour textbook. If you know what the teacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material too. This will help you understand the next class. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on test.6. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't worry excessively about a single test. Tests provide grades, but they also let you know what you need to spend more time studying, and they help make your knowledge permanent. There are other techniques that might help you with your studying. Only a few have been mentioned here. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these. Talk with your classmates about their study techniques. Share with them some of the techniques you have found to be helpful. Improving your study habits will improve your grades.NEW WORDSaverage n. ordinary 普通的;中等的intelligence n. ability to learn and understand 智力necessarily ad. inevitably 必定case n. what has really happened; actual condition 实情additional a. added 附加的,额外的 n. additionweekly a. done or happening every week 每周的;一周一次的schedule n. timetable 时间表chartn. This is the story of that adventure.Sailing Round the WorldBefore he sailed round the world single-handed, Francis Chichester had already surprised his friends several times. Soon, he was away in this new 16-metre boat, Gipsy Moth.Chichester followed the route of the great nineteenth century clipper ships. But the clippers had had plenty of crew. Chicheater did it all by himself, even after the main steering device had been damaged by gales. After resting in Sydney for a few weeks, Chichester set off once more in spite of his friends' attempts to dissuade him. The second half of his voyage was by far the more dangerous part, during which he sailed round the treacherous Cape Horn.On 29 January he left Australia. The mext night, the blackest he had ever known, the sea became so rough that the boat almost turned over. Food, clothes, and broken glass were all mixed together. Fortunately, bed and went to sleep. When he woke up, the sea had become calm the nearest person he could contact byradio, unless there was a ship nearby, Wild be on an island 885 miles away. After succeeding in sailing round Cape Horn, Chichester sent the followiing radio message to London:" I feel as if I had wakened from a nightmare. Wild horses could not drag me down to Cape Horn and that sinister Southern Ocean again."Juat before 9 o'clock on Sunday evening 28 May, 1967, he aeeived back in England, where a quarter of a million people were waiting to welcome him. Queeh Elizabeth II knigthed him with the very sword that Queen Elizabeth I had sailed round the world for the first time. The whole voyage from England and back had covered 28, 500 miles. It had taken him nine months , of which the sailing time was 226 days. He had done what he wanted to accomplish.Like many other adventurers, Chichester had experienced fear and conquered it. In doing so, he had undoubtedly learnt something about himself. Moreover, in the modern age when human beings depend so much on machines, he had given men throughout the world new pride.NEW WORDSsingle-handed a & ad. Everyone was so kind tothe old lady on her birthday. Surely her daughter would make an even bigger effort to please he?The PresentIt was the old lady's birthday. She got up early to be ready for the post. From the secondfloor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from the ground floor brought up her letters on the rare occasions when anything came.Today she was sure the would be something. Myra wouldn'tforget her mother's birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. Her husband had been made Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work the aged. The old lady was proud of Myra, but Enid was the daughter she loved. Enid had never married, but had seemed content to live with her mother, and teach in a primary school round the corner. One evening, however, Enid said, "I've arranged for Mrs.Morrison to look after you for a few days, Mother. Tomorrow I have to go into hospital--just a minor operation, I'll soon be home."In the morning she went, but never came back--she died on the operating table. Myra came to the funeral, and in her efficientway arranged for Mrs. Morrison to come in and light the fire and give the old lady her breakfast. Two years ago that was, and since then Myra had been to see her mother three times, but her husband never. The old lady was eight today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps--perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday, another decade lined or endured just as you chose to look at it.Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of colour brightened her cheeks. She was excited--like a child. She would enjoy her day. Yesterday Mrs. Morrison had given the flat an extra clean, and today she had brought a card and a bunch of marigolds when she came to do the breakfast. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. The little boy, Johnnie, had been up with a packet of mints, and said he wouldn't go out to play until the post had come."I guess you'll get lots and lots of presents," he said, "I did last were when I was six."What would she like? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new cardigan. A cardigan would be lovely. Blue's such a pretty colour. Jim had always liked her in blue. Or a table lamp. Or abook, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers. So many lovely things. She stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Her heart beat fast. Johnnie had seen him too and ran to the gate. Then clatter, clatter up the stairs. Johnnie knocked at her door."Granny, granny," he shouted, "I've got your post."He gave her four envelopes. Three were unsealed cards fromold friends. The fourth was sealed, in Myra's writing. The old lady felt a pang of disappointment."No parcel, Johnnie?""No, granny."Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come later by parcel post. She must be patient. Almost reluctantly she tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday -- Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra and Harold. The cheque fluttered to the floor like a bird with a broken wing. Slowly the old lady stooped to pick it up. Her present, her lovely present. With trembling fingers she tore it into little bits.NEW WORDSrelative n. 亲属,亲戚present n. gift 礼物,赠品postman n. 邮递员rare a. not happening often 罕见的;不常发生的occasion n. special time; time when sth. happens 时刻,时机;场合mayor n. chief official of a city or town 市长medal n. 奖章aged a. oldcontent a. satisfied; pleased 满意的;高兴的primary a. first; earliest 首要的;最初的arrange vi. make preparations; plan 作安排,筹划minor a. not serious or important 较小的;次要的operate vi. cut the body in order to set right or remove a diseased part 开刀,动手术operating table n. a special table in a hospital, where operations are done 手术台funeral n. 葬礼efficient a. able to plan and work well 效率高的decade n. ten yearsendure vt. bear (pain, suffering, etc.) 忍受,忍耐spot n. a round area that is different from the main surface 点,斑点brighten vt. make bright or brighter 使发光;使发亮cheek n. either side of the face below the eye 面颊extra a. additional 额加的,外加的clean n. cleaningbunch n. things of the same kind that are tied together (一)束,(一)串marigold n. 万寿菊(花)packet n. small parcel box 小包(裹)mint n. 薄荷糖slipper n. 拖鞋cardigan n. Certainly, there are many worthwhile programs on television, including news, educational programsfor children, programs on current social problems, plays, movies, concerts, and so on. Nevertheless, perhaps peopleshould not be spending so much of their time in front of the TV. Mr Mayer imagines what we might do if we were forced to find other activities.Turning off TV: a Quiet HourI would like to propose that for sixty to ninety minutes each evening, right after the early evening news, all television broadcasting in the United States be prohibited by law.Let us take a serious, reasonable look at what the results be if such a proposal were accepted. Families might use the timefor a real family hour. Without the distraction of TV, theymight sit around together after dinner and actually talk to one another. It is well known that many of our problems -- everything, in fact, from the generation gap to the highdivorce rate to some forms of mental illness -- are caused at least in part by failure to communicate. We do not tell each other what is disturbing us. The result is emotional difficulty of one kind or another. By using the quiet family hour to discuss our problems, we might get to know each other better, and to like each other better. On evenings when such talk is unnecessary, families could rediscover more active pastimes. Freed from TV, forced to find their own activities, they might take a ride together to watch the sunset. Or they might take a walk together (remember feet?) and see the neighborhood with fresh, new eyes. With free time and no TV, children and adults might rediscover reading. There is more entertainment in a good book than in a month of typical TV programming. Educators report that the generation growing up with television can barely write an English sentence, even at the college level. Writing is often learned from reading. A more literate new generation could be a product of the quiet hour.A different form of reading might also be done, as it was in the past: reading aloud. Few pastimes bring a family closer together than gathering around and listening to mother orfather read a good story. The quiet hour could become the storyhour. When the quiet hour ends, the TV networks might even be forced to come up with better shows in order to get us backfrom our newly discovered activities. At first glance, the idea of an hour without TV seems radical. What will parents do without the electronic baby-sitter? Howwill we spend the time? But it is not radical at all. It has been only twenty-five years since television came to control American free time. Those of us thirty-five and older can remember childhoods without television, spent partly with radio -- which at least involved the listener's imagination -- butalso with reading, learning, talking, playing games, inventing new activities. It wasn't that difficult. Honest. The truth is we had a ball.NEW WORDSworthwhile a. good enough for the time or effort needed; valuable 值得花时间(或精力)的;有价值的program (me) n. performance on radio or television 节目educational a. of or for education; providing education or information 教育的;有教育意义的current a. of the present time 当前的social a. of or in society 社会的movie n. film that one sees at a cinema 电影nevertheless conj. but; however 然而,不过propose vt. suggest 建议broadcasting n. the action of sending out sound (or images) by radio (or television) 广播prohibit v & n. forbid by law 禁止proposal vt. suggestion 提议,建议actually n. in actual fact, really 实际上generation n. all the people about the same age (一)代gap n. an empty space between two things or two parts of a thing; a wide difference of opinion, character, or the like 缺口,间隙;分歧,隔阂divorce n. end of a marriage by law 离婚rate n. 率mental a. of the mind 精神的;思想上的communicate vi. share or exchange opinions, ideas, etc. 交流意见,思想等disturb vt. make (sb.) worried 使烦恼emotional a. 感情的pastime n. anything done to pass time pleasantly 消遣,娱乐sunset n. the going down of the sun; the time when the sun goes down 日落(时分)neighborhood n. the area around a point or place 邻近地区;地段adult n. 成年人typical a. 典型的educator n. a person whose profession is education 教育家barely ad. hardly 仅仅,勉强;几乎没有literate a. able to read and write 能读写的;有文化的product n. sth. made or grown 产品network n. 广播(或电视)联播公司;广播(或电视)网glance n. quick look 一瞥;扫视radical a. extreme; very different 激进的electronic a. 电子的electron n.baby-sitter n. someone who looks after a child when the parents are away for a short time (代人临时)照看婴儿childhood n. time when one is a child 童年partly ad. not completely; in some degree 部分地;在一定程度上involvevt. have as a part or result (必须)包括imagination n. the ability to imagine 想像力learning n. the gaining of knowledge or skill through studying; knowledge or skill gained through studying 学习;学问,知识invent vt. produce (sth.) for the first time 发明PHRASES & EXPRESSIONSgeneration gap failure of the younger and older generations to communicate and understand one another 代沟in part in some degree; partly 在一定程度上;部分地grow up change from a child to a man or a woman 成长,长大bring together cause to meet 使相聚come up with think of; produce 想出;提出at first glance when first seen or thought about 乍一看;最初考虑时have a ball (sl.) enjoy oneself, have a very good time 玩得开心PROPER NAMESMayer 迈耶(姓氏)the United States 美国Unit Five: A Miserable,Merry ChristmasTEXTA miserable and merry Christmas? How could it be?A Miserable, Merry ChristmasChristmas was coming. I wanted a pony. To make sure that my parents understood, I declared that I wanted noting else. "Nothing but a pony?" my father asked."Nothing," I said."Not even a pair of high boots?"That was hard. I did want boots, but I stuck to the pony. "No, not even boots.""Nor candy? There ought to be something to fill your stocking with, and Santa Claus can't put a pony into a stocking,"That was true, and he couldn't lead a pony down the chimney either . But no. "All I want is a pony," I said. "If I can't have a pony, give me nothing, nothing."On Christmas Eve I hung up my stocking along with my sisters. The next morning my sisters and I woke up at six. Then we raced downstairs to the fireplace. And there they were, the gifts, all sorts of wonderful things, mixed-up piles of presents. Only my stocking was empty; it hung limp; not a thing in it; and under and around it -- nothing. My sisters had knelt down, each by her pile of gifts; they were crying with delight, till they looked up and saw me standing there looking so miserable. They came over to me and felt my stocking: nothing.I don't remember whether I cried at that moment, but my sisters did. They ran with me back to my bed, and there we all criedtill I became indignant. That helped some. I got up, dressed, and driving my sisters away, I went out alone into the stable, and there, all by myself, I wept. My mother came out to me and she tried to comfort me. But I wanted no comfort. She left me and went on into the house with sharp words for my father. My sisters came to me, and I was rude. I ran away from them. I went around to the front of the house, sat down on the steps, and, the crying over, I ached. I was wronged, I was hurt. And my father must have been hurt, too, a little. I saw him looking out of the window. He was watching me or something for an hour or two, drawing back the curtain so little lest I catch him, but I saw his face, and I think I can see now the anxiety upon on it, the worried impatience. After an hour or two, I caught sight of a man riding a pony down the street, a pony and a brand-new saddle; the most beautiful saddle I ever saw, and it was a boy's saddle. And the pony! As he drew near, I saw that the pony was really a small horse, with a black mane and tail, and one white foot and a white star on his forehead. For such a horse as that I would have given anything. But the man came along, reading the numbers on the houses, and, as my hopes -- my impossible hopes -- rose, he looked at our door and passed by, he and the pony, and the saddle. Too much, I fell upon the steps and broke into tears. Suddenly I heard a voice."Say, kid," it said, "do you know a boy named Lennie Steffens?"I looked up. It was the man on the pony, back again."Yes," I spluttered through my tears. "That's me.""Well," he said, "then this is your horse. I've been lookingall over for you and your house. Why don't you put your number where it can be seen?""Get down," I said, running out to him. I wanted to ride.He went on saying something about "ought to have got here at seven o'clock, but--"I hardly heard, I could scarcely wait. I was so happy, so thrilled. I rode off up the street. Such a beautiful pony. And mine! After a while I turned and trotted back to the stable. There was the family, father, mother, sisters, all working for me, all happy. They had been putting in place the tools of my new business: currycomb, brush, pitchfork -- everything, and there was hay in the loft. But that Christmas, which my father had planned so carefully, was it the best or the worst I ever knew? He often asked me that; I never could answer as a boy. I think now that it was both. It covered the whole distance from broken-hearted misery to bursting happiness -- too fast, A grown-up could hardly have stood it.NEW WORDSmiserablea. causing unhappiness; very unhappy 悲惨的merrya. cheerful, full of lively happiness, fun, etc. 欢乐的,愉快的ponyn. a small horse 矮种马;小马bootn. 长统靴candyn. Great Spirit of China纪录电影《厉害了,我的国》,为中国打call!词数371 建议阅读时间6分钟There may be no better way to see the best of our country than by watching Amazing China. The documentary focuses on the major achievements the nation has made since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012. It came out on March 2 in Chinese mainland cinemas.Amazing China shows off key Chinese infrastructure (基础设施) projects from aerospace (航空航天工业) to high-speed rail, such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope (单碟射电望远镜), FAST.“In the past, what kind of project we took up was decided by what kinds of facilities (设施) we had,”Lin Ming, chief engineer of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge project, says in the movie. “But nowadays, no matter what kind of project we are assigned (指派), we develop the technology to complete it.”Amazing achievements aside, the film sheds some light on the heroes who have contributed to the country’s progress in science. One of the most touching moments in the film is an interview with Nan Rendong, often called the “father of FAST”. He passed away last year after more than 20 years of working on the project. But efforts from everyday people are just as important. For example, the movie shows a young Tibetan woman who volunteers in rural areas to help eradicate poverty (摆脱贫困), and a successful businessman from Fujian province who has settled in the Gobi Desert to grow grapes. The stories featured in the movie show us that life is never easy, but spirit and hard work make it possible to achieve our goals. And the people in it are representative of the countless Chinese people who work hard every day to make the country a better place.“The film will help people to know our country better,”La Peikang, head of China Film Corp, told China Daily. “The moving stories behind the Chinese miracles reflect the people’s endeavors and spirit.”And even the shooting of Amazing China demonstrates the country’s endeavors toward innovation (创新). “We see many difficult shooting techniques used in Amazing China, like aerial (航空的) shots,”Rao Shuguang, head of the China Film CriticsAssociation, told China Daily. “The development of film production techniques also reflects the country’s growing strength. They show that China is responsibly trying to build a shared future for humanity (人类).”New rule means more time to relaxPremier Li Keqiang delivers the Government Work Report at the opening meeting of the first session of the 13th National People’s Congressin Beijing on March 5. 高中年级英语课外阅读文章(一)Do you want a cupcake?YOUR mom might cook a bowl of noodles for you on your birthday. But in the US, a mom makes a cupcake (杯形蛋糕) for her children on their birthday.Cupcakes are small, round cakes topped with frosting (糖霜). It has been an American tradition that moms bring cupcakes to the classroom to celebrate th eir child’s birthday. But recently some doctors have called for this to be banned (禁止). They believe cupcakes contribute to child obesity (肥胖).Despite their good intentions, however, some people believe that experts are interfering (妨癨-) with American culture. The cupcake is seen as American as apple pie — only prettier.According to Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University, the cupcake is the most democratic (民主的) of desserts. As they are small enough for one person, you don’t have to share your cupcake with anyone —it’s all yours. They are also all the same size, so there can’t be any cries of “she got the bigger piece!”Each bite can taste different depending on how much icing you have. It is a lesson in self-determination (自主). Some people eat only a little of the frosting every time, others have it all in just one bite.In recent years, eating a cupcake has become as trendy as having a cup of Starbucks coffee.Democratic presidential candidate (候选人) Hillary Clinton jokingly promised on a talk show that if she was elected president, she would give everyone a cupcake on her birthday.Ruth Reichl, editor-in-chief (主编) of Gourmet magazine, explains that the rise of the cupcake is very much about going back to American national identity (认同感) in food, which is all about comfort. “People want to think about when they and their country were innocent (纯真的),” she said.高中年级英语课外阅读文章(二)Mourinho: I'm still the special oneUPON landing in the English Premier League (英超) three years ago, Jose Mourinho declared (宣称) he was the special one. “Please don’t call me arrogant (傲慢的), but I’m European champion and I think I’m a special one.”He was definitely different from other managers. Never before had a football manager entertained the world both on and off the pitch (球场). The 44-year-old Portuguese manager is arrogant, witty and brilliant, but never dull. Two league titles in two seasons suggested he was indeed special. Under Mourinho, Chelsea never lost a Premier League match at their home stadium, Stamford Bridge. But despite these achievements, Mourinho’s relationship with the club’s owner Roman Abramovich become fractured (破裂) beyond repair.Abramovich decided to buy players like Andri Shevchenko and Michael Ballack. But Mourinho did not always play them.Abramovich wanted Chelsea to play an aggressive, attacking style of football, but Mourinho also refused. When Mourinho found his authority was being weakened, he walked away.Off the pitch, Mourinho was arrested (逮捕) after an angryquarrel with police officers about his dog. But he was also the manager who would run off from an interview to open the door for an elderly woman who was struggling with it.Mourinho was born into a family with football tradition. Despite an academic record that could have opened many other doors, he never considered a career outside of football. When it became clear he didn’t have enough talent to be a great player, he began working towards a career in coaching. And he has built a great one.“I think I’m still special. I achieved good things and it was a fantastic period in my career. I’ll try to forget the bad things and remember the good ones,” he said.。

2011高考英语课外阅读材料【每两天一篇—阅读+单词学习】Unit One: How to Improve Your Study HabitsTEXTWant to know how to improve your grades without having to spend more time studying? Sounds too good to be true? Well, read on...How to Improve Your Study HabitsPerhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. You do well enough in school, but you probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily the case, however. You can receive better grades if you want to. Yes, even students of average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here's how:1. Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of your time. Fill in committed time such as eating, sleeping, meetings, classes, etc. Then decide on good, regular times for studying. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn't occupy all of the free time on the schedule. It's important to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well. This weekly schedule may not solve all of your problems, but it will make you more aware of how you spend your time. Read about these points in your textbook. Share with them some of the techniques you have foundto be helpful. Improving your study habits will improve your grades.NEW WORDSaverage n. ordinary 普通的;中等的intelligence n. ability to learn and understand 智力necessarily ad. inevitably 必定case n. what has really happened; actual condition 实情additional a. added 附加的,额外的n. additionweekly a. done or happening every week 每周的;一周一次的schedule n. timetable 时间表chartn. This is the story of that adventure.Sailing Round the WorldBefore he sailed round the world single-handed, Francis Chichester had already surprised his friends several times. He had tried to fly round the world but failed. That was in 1931.The years passed. Soon, he was away in this new 16-metre boat, Gipsy Moth.Chichester followed the route of the great nineteenth century clipper ships. But the clippers had had plenty of crew. Chicheater did it all by himself, even after the main steering device had been damaged by gales. When he woke up, the sea had become calm the nearest person he could contact by radio, unless there was a ship nearby, Wild be on an island 885 miles away. Everyone was so kind to the old lady on her birthday. Surely her daughter would make an even bigger effort to please he?The PresentIt was the old lady's birthday. She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from the ground floor brought up her letters on the rare occasions when anything came.Today she was sure the would be something. Myra wouldn't forget her mother's birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. Her husband had been made Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work the aged. The old lady was proud of Myra, but Enid was the daughter she loved. Enid had never married, but had seemed content to live with her mother, and teach in a primary school round the corner. One evening, however, Enid said, "I've arranged for Mrs. Morrison to look after you for a few days, Mother. Tomorrow I have to go into hospital--just a minor operation, I'll soon be home."In the morning she went, but never came back--she died on the operating table. Myra came to the funeral, and in her efficient way arranged for Mrs. Morrison to come in and light the fire and give the old lady her breakfast. She would enjoy her day.Yesterday Mrs. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers. Three were unsealed cards from old friends. The fourth was sealed, in Myra's writing. The old lady felt a pang of disappointment."No parcel, Johnnie?""No, granny."Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come later by parcel post. She must be patient.Almost reluctantly she tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday -- Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra and Harold. The cheque fluttered to the floor like a bird with a broken wing. Slowly the old lady stooped topick it up. Her present, her lovely present. With trembling fingers she tore it into little bits. Certainly, there are many worthwhile programs on television, including news, educational programs for children, programs on current social problems, plays, movies, concerts, and so on. Nevertheless, perhaps people should not be spending so much of their time in front of the TV. Families might use the time for a real family hour. Without the distraction of TV, they might sit around together after dinner and actually talk to one another. It is well known that many of our problems -- everything, in fact, from the generation gap to the high divorce rate to some forms of mental illness -- are caused at least in part by failure to communicate. Few pastimesbring a family closer together than gathering around and listening to mother or father read a good story. The quiet hour could become the story hour. When the quiet hour ends, the TV networks might even be forced to come up with better shows in order to get us back from our newly discovered activities. At first glance, the idea of an hour without TV seems radical. What will parents do without the electronic baby-sitter? How will we spend the time? But it is not radical at all. It has been only twenty-five years since television came to control American free time. Those of us thirty-five and older can remember childhoods without television, spent partly with radio -- which at least involved the listener's imagination -- but also with reading, learning, talking, playing games, inventing new activities. 感情的pastime n. anything done to pass time pleasantly 消遣,娱乐sunset n. the going down of the sun; the time when the sun goes down日落(时分)neighborhood n. the area around a point or place 邻近地区;地段adult n. 成年人typical a. 典型的educator n. a person whose profession is education 教育家barely ad. hardly 仅仅,勉强;几乎没有literate a. able to read and write 能读写的;有文化的product n. sth. made or grown 产品network n. 广播(或电视)联播公司;广播(或电视)网glance n. quick look 一瞥;扫视radical a. extreme; very different 激进的electronic a. 电子的electron n.baby-sitter n. someone who looks after a child when the parents are away for a short time (代人临时)照看婴儿childhood n. time when one is a child 童年partly ad. not completely; in some degree 部分地;在一定程度上involvevt. have as a part or result (必须)包括imagination n. the ability to imagine 想像力learning n. the gaining of knowledge or skill through studying; knowledge or skill gained through studying 学习;学问,知识invent vt. produce (sth.) for the first time 发明PHRASES & EXPRESSIONSgeneration gap failure of the younger and older generations to communicate and understand one another 代沟in part in some degree; partly 在一定程度上;部分地grow up change from a child to a man or a woman 成长,长大bring together cause to meet 使相聚come up with think of; produce 想出;提出at first glance when first seen or thought about乍一看;最初考虑时have a ball (sl.) enjoy oneself, have a very good time 玩得开心PROPER NAMESMayer迈耶(姓氏)the United States 美国Unit Five: A Miserable,Merry ChristmasTEXTA miserable and merry Christmas? How could it be?A Miserable, Merry ChristmasChristmas was coming. I wanted a pony. To make sure that my parents understood, I declared that I wanted noting else."Nothing but a pony?" my father asked."Nothing," I said."Not even a pair of high boots?"That was hard. They ran with me back to my bed, and there we all cried till I became indignant. I've been looking all over for you and your house. They had been putting in place thetools of my new business: currycomb, brush, pitchfork -- everything, and there was hay in the loft. 长统靴candyn.
