新概念英语二第五课
In New Concept English Book 2, Lesson 5, we are introduced to the usage and rules of the word "must" in English. The lesson explains that "must" is used to express obligation or necessity.
Firstly, "must" is used to talk about present obligations or requirements. It indicates that something is necessary or needed at the moment. For example, "You must wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle" implies that wearing a helmet is compulsory for your safety during motorcycle riding.
Secondly, "must" is used to make deductions or conclusions based on a present situation. It implies a high degree of certainty. For instance, "The ground is wet. It must have rained recently" suggests that the wet ground is a reasonable deduction that it rained recently.
Thirdly, "must" can be used to express strong personal opinions or give advice. It implies a strong belief or conviction. For example, "You must visit the Louvre Museum when you go to Paris" emphasizes the speaker's opinion that visiting the Louvre is a highly recommended activity in Paris.
However, it is important to note that "must" is mostly used in positive sentences. In negative sentences, the word "mustn't" is used to indicate prohibition or something that
is not allowed. For example, "You mustn't use your phone
during the exam" implies that using a phone is strictly prohibited during the exam.
Moreover, we learned that "must" doesn't change its form for different subjects. It remains the same regardless of whether it is used with "I," "you," "he," "she," "it," "we,"
or "they." However, we need to add "-n't" to form the
negative form "mustn't."
Additionally, it's worth mentioning that the word "must" is more formal and stronger than "should" or "have to." "Should" suggests a recommendation or advice, while "have to" indicates an obligation or requirement with less emphasis on personal conviction.
To summarize, the word "must" plays an essential role in expressing obligations, deductions, and personal opinions in English. Understanding its usage and rules will allow us to communicate effectively and convey our intentions clearly in various situations.。
