Scientists have been working to grow meat “in vitro,” or in a laboratory, for many years. In the laboratory, they mix cells from a horse and a pig. They feed the c ells to help them increase in number and grow into a small piece of meat.
Right now, the meat that scientists have made is very small and looks gray because in vitro meat does not need blood to grow. But this is not its only problem. It takes a long time for the meat to grow and scientists do not know how to make a large amount. It also costs a lot of money to make in vitro meat. Making enough for one meal would cost $250,000.
Although producing in vitro meat has many problems, scientists continue to work because in vitro meat would have many advantages. Since we have 7,000,000,000 people on the planet to feed, in vitro meat can help lower the need for the earth’s resources.
Besides, “Moving the production of meat from farms to laboratories would help cut down the huge amount of harmful gases produced by farm animals,” says reporter Nick Collins.
In vitro meat could solvemany of the problems of animal meat. But can humans eat this in vitro meat? Scientists do not know if it even tastes like real meat. Because of food resea rch laws, they are not yet able to taste their meat. But they hope someday people can buy it in their local market. They say it is real meat and it is just made in a different way.
A lot of people are still worried about in vitro meat. However, it will be years before the meat is ready to sell. Kate Shepard, a writer for Mother Jones magazine, says, “It will require hard testing before it can be fed to humans. It is still such a new idea that we do not know yet what health problems it may have. Right now, there are no rules for in vitro meat.”
21. What are the scientists trying to find out in their experiment?
A. How to get a new kind of animal.
B. How to make a new kind of meat.
C. How to make animal meat taste better.
D. How to greatly increase animals’ numbers.
22. What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The ways to improve the experiment.
B. The bad influence the experiment brings.
C. The problems scientists face in the experiment.
D. The difficulty in collecting money for experiment.
23. What does Nick think of in vitro meat?
A. It stops people’s cruelty to animals.
B. It is environmentally friendly.
C. It is against the rules.
D. It worries him a lot.
24. According to scientists, in vitro meat .
A. is safe to eat
B. tastes like real meat
C. may be successful in the future
D. will soon be available on the market

I now work 40 hours a week at a weather company and I love it. Compared to when I first became a mom, I don’t feel bad about being away from my three kids. When
I had my first child, I was a busy manager of a local news station. My husband had
a part-time jo
b and cared for her the rest of the time. I was determined to find a way to be home more. Once I became pregnant with my second kid, I quit my job to focus fully on writing.
At first I felt like I was living the dream. I was a work-from-home mom who never had to be away from my children. But working from home can end up being more stressful than working full-time or being a stay-at-home mom. Because you’re frequently torn between work, keeping house, and telling sweet faces you don’t have time to play. Ever tried writing an article with a baby screaming? It was awful.
I was so stressed that I eventually started taking my kids to a day care center
a couple days a week. The whole reason I worked so hard to be able to write for a living was to be at home with my kids and here I was taking them to a day care center.
I thought I was a failure then.
Over the past five years of being a freelancer(自由作家), I’ve realized a couple
of things. For me, working from home isn’t “living the dream.”As I wrote six months ago, “I thought I felt bad leaving my daughter for ten hours a day but now she is old enough to ask me to read her a story. Try telling your kid no, 20 times a day.
I t’s cruel. You end up feeling worse for having to ignore them than you would if you were gone at a job all day.” I also realize not having anywhere to be and not socializing with people weren’t good for my mental well-being.
Not only that, but I can now show my kids that Mom is important and has a job at a flashy office building, something they didn’t realize when I sat around in yoga pants typing on my computer all day long.
25. The underlined part “the dream” in Paragraph 2 refer to “”
A. working from home
B. earning a lot of money
C. not suffering from stress
D. not taking care of her kids
26. How did the author feel about taking her kids to a day care center?
A. Excited.
B. Guilty.
C. Relaxed.
D. Stressed.
27. While working as a freelancer, the author .
A. made a great many friends
B. was not good at telling stories
C. left her daughter for a long time
D. felt terrible for ignoring her kids
28. We can infer that now the author’s kids .
A. are much prouder of their mom
B. realize why their mom is important
C. are feeling sad for leaving their mom
D. understand why their mom works so hard
C
Our education system was invented. There were no public systems of education before the 19th century. They all came into being to meet the needs of industrialism. So the most useful subjects for work are at the top and you were probably driven away from what you did as a kid at school – things you liked – because you would never get a job doing that. Is that right? Don’t do music. You’re not going to be a musician. Don’t do art. You’re not going to be an artist. In addition, the whole system of public education around the world is a process of university entrance. And the consequence is that many highly talented, brilliant, creative people think they’re not because the thing they were good at wasn’t valued at school.
I think we can’t afford to go on that way. In the next 30 years, more people worldwide will be graduating through education than since the beginning of the history. Suddenly, degrees aren’t worth anything. When I was a student, if you had a degree, you had a job. But now you need a Master’s degree where the previous job required a Bachelor, and now you need a Ph.D. for the other. It’s a pr ocess of academic inflation (膨胀), and it indicates the whole structure of education needs changing.
All the great teachers I’ve ever met and worked with are people who can inspire interest and curiosity and light up people’s imaginations with the interests they themselves have for a particular field of work. I mean, teaching is not only a process of giving people direct instructions and information they have to memorize, it is much more than that.
I believe our only hope for the future is to rethink the fundamental principles on which we are educating our children. And our task is to educate their whole being
so they can face the future. By the way, we may not see this future, but they will. And our job is to help them make something of it.
29. Things little kids like to do are not taught at school because they .
A. are not challenging enough for students
B. don’t meet the expectation of parents
C. are not useful for making a living
D. don’t fit in classroom teaching
30. The author develops the second paragraph mainly .
A. by classification
B. by comparison
C. by example
D. by process
31. In the author’s view, a good teacher should .
A. be imaginative
B. be knowledgeable
C. create their own ways of teaching
D. encourage people to develop their interest
D
If your in-box is currently reporting unread messages in the hundreds or thousands, you might have a hard time believing the news: e-mail is on the decline.
At first glance, that might seem to be the case. The incoming generation, after all, doesn’t do e-mail, though they might have an account. They use it only as we would a fax machine: as a means to communicate with old-school folks like their parents or to fulfill the sign-up requirements of websites. They rarely check it, though.
Today’s instant electronic memos – such as texting and Facebook and Twitter messages – are more direct, more concentrated and more efficient. They go without the salutation (称呼语) and the signoff; we already know the “to” and “from”. Many corporations are moving to messaging networks for exactly that reason: more signal, less noise and less time. This trend is further evidence that store-and-forward systems such as e-mail and voicemail are outdated. Instead of my leaving you a lengthy message that you pick up later, I can now send you an easily-consumed message that you can read – and respond to – on the go.
The decline of e-mail corresponds neatly to the dawn of the mobile era. Instantaneous (即时的) written messages are different. These are neatly tailored to fit in just about any time: before a movie, in a taxi, waiting for lunch. And because these notes are invariably brief, they’re natural for smartphone typing. With these formats, you also have control over who can correspond with you, which you usually don’t in e-mail. And especially on Facebook, instant messaging can take on the character of a chat room, where several people can talk at once.
Does this mean e-mail is on its way to the dustbin of digital history? Not necessarily. E-mail still has certain advantages. While tweets and texts feel ephemeral–you read them, and then they’re gone, into an endless string, e-mail still feels like something you have and that you can file, search and return to later. It’s easy to imagine that it will continue to feel more appropriate for formal communications: agreements, important news, longer explanations.
So e-mail won’t go away completely. Remember, we’ve been through a transition like this not so long ago: when e-mail was on the rise, people said that postal mail was dead. That’s not how it works. Postal mail found its smaller niche, and so will e-mail. Technology rarely replaces an institution completely; it just adds new
avenues.
E-mail down, messaging up. Now go clean out your in-box.
32. What would the incoming generation like to do with their e-mail accounts?
A. Contact close friends.
B. Send long messages.
C. Fill in some forms.
D. Communicate with their colleagues.
33. Paragraphs 3-4 are important to the passage in that they .
A. illustrate the preferences of the young generation
B. explain the possible reasons behind the decline of e-mail
C. reveal the rapid development of e-communi cation channels
D. offer evidence about the uncertain future of easily-consumed messages
34. What does the underlined word “ephemeral” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Conveniently-sent.
B. Randomly-written
C. Hardly readable.
D. Short-lived.
35. What does the author think of e-mail being replaced?
A. Negative.
B. Indifferent.
C. Ambiguous.
D. Doubtful. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

How to be a good roommate
Roommate horror stories are pretty popular topics of conversation at school. Follow a few simple tips to ensure you’re not the awful roommate everyone’s talking about.
Respect each other
First and foremost, you need to respect your roommate.
● 36 If your roommate is sleeping, keep the noise and light levels down. If your roommate is studying, don’t have loud conversations in the same room. If in doubt, ask yourselfwhether you would be annoyed if your roommate didn’t do the above things for you.
●Keep it clean.37 Hair in the shower or bathrooms littered with magazines or dirty clothes. Respect means keeping your side of the room clean. And hopefully, if your roommate sees you keeping your side clean, they’ll be more likely to keep theirs clean.
●Keep your hands off their stuff. 38 If you really need to borrow something of theirs, always ask before you do. If they say no, don’t get angry. Some people just don’t like other people using their stuff.
Set basic rules
You and your roommate should establish some basic rules. For instance, I really don’t like it when people have phone conversations in the room while I’m studying.
39 I’d rather be writing my paper than listening to you tell your best friend about your weekend. So discuss that with your roommate. Make a compromise, but the tie should go to the person studying. Another example is to discuss cleaning duties. Dividing cleaning duties will make your room cleaner and it will help ease roommatetensions.
40
A. It is amazing how people don’t understand what it means to be considerate.
B. Taking out the trash and tidying the room are just a few things to consider.
C. I have heard many horror stories about dirty roommates.
D. I’m not good at doing several things at the same time.
E. Don’t use your roommate’s items without asking.
F. Talk on the phone.
G. Be considerate.

To help students relax, our school organized an outing to the Forest Park on Nov.
17.
It was a beautiful sunny day. At 7:30 am, we met at our school gate and set off for the Forest Park. An hour later, we reached the park. The scenery there was breathtaking. We were free to walk around and enjoy the amazing scenery for a few hours. After lunch, we were divided into groups, playing games, singing and dancing. At around 4 pm, we started to head back, tired but happy.
This activity not only offered us a chance to get close to nature, but also brought us closer to each other.。
