第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
One year, before Christmas, our son Jay, who was six years old and an only child at the time, asked for a new sound system. “Please bring me a new stereo so I don't have to listen to my dad's old music,” he told the mall Santa. Robin and l took note.
On Christmas Eve, we placed Santa's cookies and milk by the fire, placed a few carrots on the roof for the reindeer, and put Jay to sleep in our bed at the back of the house, where the sound of Santa's boots wouldn't wake him. That's when I retired to the NASA-Level workshop I had set up in the spare bedroom and spent the whole night putting together that stereo.
At one point, I took a break to move Jay from our bed to his—he was afraid that Santa might think he wasn't home and would forget to leave presents. He moved a bit while I carried him but never opened his eyes. At long last, I finished the stereo and positioned it by the tree, worried that it wouldn't play but too scared to turn it on and accidentally blast our son out of bed.Robin and I fell asleep early that Christmas morning, filled with satisfaction. At 7 a.m., Jay woke us up and led us to the Christmas tree. He fell in love with the sound system—we were deaf for a week.
A few days passed, and Jay asked me a surprising question. “Dad, how did I get from your bed to mine?”Ever the clever one, I said, “Santa moved you! Isn't that fun?!”He said nothing, walking into the hall and looking closely at the floor. He came back, arms folded. “Dad, we need to talk, but Mom can't hear. Santa either wears the same cologne(科隆香水) as you do, or you are Santa Claus! Look at the wheel marks on the carpet. The stereo was rolled out of that bedroom and down the hallway.”
My first thought was: Are you kidding me? The kid was only six, and he discovered detailed evidence. He advised we not tell his mother because he was certain she didn't know. “It will be our little secret,”I told him, much to his delight. “We men have to stick together.”
After that, the real fun began. Jay got to be Santa when we donated presents to a needy family—he just loved it. Then, little brother Jordan was born, and Jay continued to play along. We actually got the most joy from Santa when Jay kept the magic alive with us. Christmas is still a special time around our household. Robin and I now have a few grandchildren to shop for. The only rule when it comes to gifts is that I don't have to build it. The last time I tried to fix something—my ’57 Chevy—I ended up taking it to a garage, where it was stolen! I must take this time to remind Santa that I'd love to have that car back unless, of course, he's using it to deliver his store of presents.
()56. What can we infer according to the passage?

Many companies enforce a “dress down Friday”policy for office workers to let their hair down at the end of the week. But according to new research, for many the opposite effect is achieved as people get stressed about what to wear on their day “off” from the office uniform.
Deadlines and budgets aside, one in ten workers cites dress down Friday as the most stressful time of the week and 15 percent become so stressed by what to wear they even call in sick.
Nearly a quarter have even been late due to hesitation and one in five has returned home to change after leaving the house.
Careful planning is essential with one third of us beginning to plan our Friday outfit on Thursday lunchtime with one percent beginning the decision-making process as early as Monday evening.
And it seems that “dressing down”requires a lot more effort than meets the eye with an astonishing 43 percent spending more time on hair, makeup and grooming on a Friday compared to any other day of the working week. with 24 percent choosing the day to experiment with their look.
This experimentation, which adds an average of fifteen minutes to an individual's morning routine, has also had an effect on our pockets as 50 percent claim to spend more on their Friday fashion than they do for the remainder of the week.
And it seems that the office is increasingly becoming a catwalk with high heels over four inches, party dresses and mini skirts all seen as acceptable Friday dresses, especially for the 50 percent of those surveyed who claim to go straight out from work every week.
With 15 percent of men claiming to have pulled a colleague aside to tell them about a Friday fashion embarrassment, and one in five women admitting to whispering at the water cooler behind a colleague's back, it's not surprising that more than one in ten of us has enlisted the advice of a professional stylist over what to wear to work.
The study, carried out by leading online fashion retailer , found that regionally, those in Birmingham and the West Midlands are the least confident in choosing their outfits alone, with 53 percent of respondents asking partners, 38 percent asking family members and nearly a quarter asking complete strangers for style advice.
()60. What are the employees of many companies encouraged to do on the last workday?

With a westerly wind at its back, the male bear continued to patrol the shore. Then, perhaps catching the scent(气味) of something unusual, it stopped dead in its tracks. It sniffed the air, and
steam came out of its bright black mouth. Following its nose, so sensitive that some say it can smell a rotting whale body from 20 miles away, the bear suddenly turned downwind and inland. Its paddle-like paws dragged, leaving deep tracks in the sand and closing in on its prey(猎物).It was to be the adventure of a lifetime. For almost two years, longtime friends Sebastian Plur Nilssen and Ludvig Fjeld, both 22, had been training for this two-month-long kayak(皮船) expedition. Hoping to follow in the footsteps of other Norwegian explorers such as Roald Amundsen and Thor Heyerdahl, the two were attempting to become the first kayakers to paddle around the entire Svalbard archipelago(群岛), a trip of more than 1,100 miles through one of the world's most remote regions.
To get fit, they had worn dry suits and kayaked through the ice-filled rivers near their hometowns outside Oslo, pulled heavy kayaks over ice floes(冰川), and jumped into the freezing waters to toughen themselves.
Lifelong hunters, they polished their shooting, by running up hills, loading their rifles, and pulling the triggers(扳机). As many Arctic experts had told them, if they needed to defend themselves from a polar bear, they'd have little time to think. Each carried a rifle in a waterproof bag tied to their kayaks. Holding steady, controlling their breathing, aiming, shooting: It all had to be second nature.
The two pioneers set out from Longyearbyen, also called the northernmost settlement in the world, on July 5,2012. They averaged about 15 miles a day, and by the end of July, they had reached the northern shore of Nordaustlandet, one of Svalbard's High Arctic islands.
With the wind picking up and the sea growing rough, they decided to head for shore and camp on a beach near a promontory named Ekstremhuken. As Nilssen paddled alongside Fjeld, he held up the map and joked, “Funny name for a place, no? I wonder if that means something ‘extreme’ will happen here?” Fjeld smiled.
After pulling their kayaks onto the rocky beach, they put up their tent and fitted a trip-wire boundary nine feet away, as they did at every campsite. A series of small explosive charges would go off if an animal were to cross the wire, giving the men time to grab their rifles and scare away a bear or, if necessary, shoot it.
The two awoke the next day to fierce winds and rough seas. After checking the weather forecast via satellite phone, Nilssen and Fjeld discussed the situation. “We'll have to stay another night,”Nilssen said. “Tomorrow should be clear.”
()63. In order to carry out their expedition successfully, the two friends ________.
A. rushed uphill every day to practice their shooting skills
B. practiced survival skills in various arctic-like conditions
C. learned from other arctic experts to deal with polar bears
D. paddled their heavy kayaks over ice floes and icy rivers

A. 1,100 miles
B. 900 miles
C. 550 miles
D. 400 miles

Frogs with deformities(畸形) continue to spread in the western United States, new research says. A parasite(寄生虫) called Ribeiroia infects several kinds of frogs when they are developing, causing deformities such as no legs or more legs than normal. These frogs are often unable to move and either die or quickly get eaten by other birds.
Scientists already knew that the parasite was the reason for the frog deformities. They wanted to find out whether known hot spots of Ribeiroia populations in four western states had changed since they were last surveyed in 1999.
So in 2010 Pieter Johnson, an expert at the University of Colorado, and his team gathered data of frogs and parasites in 48 wetlands in America. They found that the parasite infections were still common in frogs.
“We found that, although the distribution of Ribeiroia across wetlands changed, there was little net effect on overall parasite spreading, with 31 percent of wetlands gaining the parasite and 27 percent losing the parasite,”Johnson said. “But what was most surprising was that the locations had changed greatly over the last decade.”
For instance, ponds where scientists had found few deformed frogs in 1999 now had 30 percent or more frogs with deformed legs, he said. Likewise, former hot spots now had fewer of these frogs, according to their results.
The Ribeiroia parasite has a complex life cycle, which begins with the snail, a creature common in many western U.S. Wetlands. It first lives inside the snail and then goes to live in a tadpole(蝌蚪). It then enters the tadpole's tissue and the developing legs. Consequently, when the tadpole begins to transform into a frog, its “primary system of movement doesn't work—it can't jump or swim,”Johnson said. “That's when the birds”—the parasite's final host—“come and eat the young frogs like popcorn.” The parasite then reproduces inside the birds. When the birds defecate(排泄), the parasite eggs will go out of the birds and make their way back into the snails.
Though the Ribeiroia parasite occurs naturally in North America, human activities likely have something to do with its population, Johnson noted. For instance, the snails feed on algae(藻类). The polluted water from agriculture and industry into wetlands contains nutrients that improve the algae growth. With more snails in the wetlands, the parasites have more initial hosts to infect, Johnson noted.
“I don't think this story is just about frogs,” Johnson said. The scientists did not specifically measure how many frog populations at the study sites had declined—“though it's quite high”.Overall, though, frog populations will fluctuate widely from year to year, said Erin Muths, a zoologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Fort Collins, Colorado. Those fluctuations are usually based on an unpredictable resource: water. For instance, sometimes ponds dry up, killing many frog eggs. “These changes make it difficult to tell whether we are looking at a real decline in frogs.” she said.
“This distinction is important so that we can know frog populations that are really in trouble, rather than a population that is just having a bad year.”
That's also why the new research is solid. She said, “It has a long-term aspect and contributes to our understanding of frog decline.”
()67. From the text we know that ________.
A. the frogs with more legs can move more quickly and jump higher
B. the deformed frogs are now spreading all over the spots

In all one's lifetime it is oneself that one spends the most time being with or dealing with. But it is precisely oneself that one has the least understanding of. When you are going upwards in life you tend to overestimate yourself. It seems that everything you seek for is within your reach; luck and opportunities will come your way and you are overjoyed that they constitute(组成) part of your worth. When you are going downhill you tend to underestimate yourself, mistaking difficulties ancl adversities for your own incompetence. It's likely that you think it wise for yourself to know your place and stay aloof from(远离) worldly wearing a mask of cowardice(怯懦), behind which the flow of sap in your life will be retarded.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to gain a correct view of oneself and be a sober(冷静的) realist—aware of both one's strength and shortage. You may look forward hopefully to the future but be sure not to expect too much, for ideals can never be fully realized. You may be courageous to meet challenges but it should be clear to you where to direct your efforts. That's to say so long as you have a perfect knowledge of yourself there won't be difficulties you can't overcome, nor obstacles you can't surmount.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself needs self-appreciation. Whether you like yourself to be a towering tree or a blade of grass, whether you think you are a high mountain or a small stone, you represent a state of nature. If you earnestly admire yourself you'll have a real sense of self-appreciation, which will give you confidence. As soon as you gain full confidence in yourself you'll be enabled to fight and overcome any adversity(逆境).
To get a thorough understanding of oneself also requires doing oneself a favor when it's
needed. In time of anger, do yourself a favor by giving vent to it in a quiet place so that you won't be hurt by its flames; in time of sadness, do yourself a favor by sharing it with your friends so as to change a gloomy mood into a cheerful one; in time of tiredness, do yourself a favor by getting a good sleep or taking some tonic. Show yourself loving concern about your health and daily life. As you are aware, what a person physically has is but a human body that's vulnerable when exposed to the elements. So if you fall ill, it's up to you to take a good care of yourself.Unless you know perfectly well when and how to do yourself a favor, you won't be confident and ready enough to resist the attack of illness.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to get a full control of one's life. Then one will find one's life full of color and flavor.
