“He wears them all the time ! I really wish he’d get some new ones, ” Janey sighed.
At that moment Mr. Such himself came into the hall. Today he was in a brand new suit, which was white and spotless. Everyone in the hall stopped eating and stared at him in amazement.
“Wow! ” said Derek, leaning across his plate. “ Mr. Such, you look so different today! I like your suit! ”
Thank you, Derek. It’s for Parents’ meeting. ” said Mr. Such, a bit red in the face.
“But that’s not till Monday, Mr. Such, ” Janey said.
I know that, Janey. I’m just getting used to it. ”
The last lesson of the day was art. In case his new jacket got dirty, before his teaching. Mr. Such took it off and hang it on the cupboard door. However, probably because he hadn’t got used to the new jacket, he forgot to take it back with him. All the students left except Derek and Janey, who were still busy with their painting. Derek mixed up too much green paints and got his hand very dirty. He reached behind him and rubbed his hands on the towel on the cupboard door. Except that it wasn’t the towel.
“ Oh, ” he said quietly. “ What have I done! ” Turing around, he found he had wiped his hands on Mr. Such’s new jacket! Janey wanted to help, so she quickly grabbed some paper and rubbed at the green marks. “ Oh no! ” Derek cried in agony, “ You’re making them worse. They’re twice as big now. ”
Janey felt sorry and thought hard, and finally she came up with an idea. “ He was still in the office, so we still have time. There’s only one thing for it now, ” she said with determination and pointed to the sink outside the classroom. Desperate as Derek was, he took some soaps and fetched the jacket secretly to the sink with Janey.

“Oh dear, the green stuff was still there. ” Janey sighed, “ I think we have to tell the truth. ”Gathering up his courage, Derek headed to the office with Janey. Derek told Mr. Such everything and apologized to him, “ I am sorry I ruined your jacket. ” However, Mr. Such said gently,
“ Anyway I really appreciate your courage to admit your mistake. ” Surprised, Derek and Janey asked anxiously, “ But what about the Parents’ meeting? ” Mr. Such put on his old jacket and
replied, “ This one just suits me better. ” With laughter lingering in the office, they all felt a warm current welling up in their hearts.

I was walking along the road to school one day and I met my friend Raine. He suggested that we skip school and go to the movies. I refused as my dad was very fierce and strict. After much persuasion, I gave in. There was a Will Smith movie on and I was a fan.
So we set off to the movies together, bought our tickets, popcorn and drinks and settled down comfortably. As we were early, the lights were still on. We watched people come in groups, families and there were couples too. Some of them looked like school students playing truant(逃学)like us. As I turned around, I caught a glimpse of my uncle Andy and Aunt Jane walking in. They were kind and cared about me very much. I sank into my seat quickly to avoid being spotted.
I signaled to Raine that there was someone I didn’t want to see and Raine made it more obvious by turning around and asking “Who? And where?” loudly. It made me sit even lower in my seat.
To make things worse, they came and sat in the row behind us and were saying to each other
how I would have loved to come to this movie as I adored Will Smith. They were even commenting about the students playing truant. Soon the movie began and I was glad when the lights were turned off but I didn’t enjoy the movie at all for fear of being spotted. So, I sat there like an astronaut, peering over the front seat.
Every now and then I would secretly take a quick look at my aunt and uncle. I was sure they were also looking at me. Feeling nervous and anxious, I kept wondering how I could leave the cinema without being noticed.

When the movie ended and the lights came on, I remained seated. Hearing the crowds slowly move towards the door, my heart was beating wildly, but I knew if I stood up, I might be discovered. It felt like forever until almost all the people left. I peeked at where my aunt and uncle had been and found they were gone. Raine nodded at me, and we made a dash out of the door and fled down the stairs. I was running towards the gate of the cinema like crazy when I spotted two familiar figures.
In front of us were my aunt and uncle, waiting at the gate. “We saw you the moment we came in. You haven’t really enjoyed the movie, have you?” Out of breath, we hung our head in shame. Biting my lips, I heard Raine trying to defend ourselves, “It was my idea, Sir! But school is boring!” A long, horrible silence. Then my aunt just asked us to think about how worried my mother and how angry and disappointed my father would be. Raine said no more, and I felt even guiltier. In the end, we decided to make a sincere apology to my parents and my teachers as well.

Light a lamp and we can warm a heart. Terry was a middle-aged leather trader whose repeated failure in career made him a depressed man, often complaining that he had been cheated by others and cursed his own misfortune. Having stayed in the city for years, he thought he accomplished nothing.
One day, he told his wife he was so disappointed with the city that he had to leave it immediately. So, his family moved to another city, which he thought would bring good fortune to him. However, it was not easy for people to move to another place, for they had to handle quantities of stuffs and encounter many strangers. The whole family reached there in the evening of a weekend, with their clothes almost wet. It was a tough rainy night. The wind was howling dreadfully and the rain was pouring from the heaven, beating against the branches of lined trees on the road. The world was swallowed with a sea of darkness. Tired and wet, they didn’t have time to have supper. Terry and his wife were busily tidying up their new home when the light suddenly went out. Worse still, the sudden darkness scared his children to cry immediately. Terry’s wife hurried to hug them to ease their tension. Terry was regretful to have forgotten to bring along candles and had to wait helplessly in a low mood.
Just then, he heard heavy but hesitant knocks on his door that could be clearly heard in the thundering night. Instantly, all the family were totally silent, for they were all curious about the knocks. “Who’s it?” Terry asked, since they were newcomers to this city there must be nobody who knew them. Tired and busy, he especially hated to be disturbed at the moment, so he dragged his legs slowly to the door and opened it impatiently. Actually, Terry didn’t realize his negative behavior would have a bad effect on his children at all! Outside the window, the wind and the thundering ruled the world entirely in their power.

At the door was a little girl with wet raincoat and sparkling eyes. She shyly asked, “Sir, do you have candles? I’m your neighbor.” “No, I had nothing.” answered Terry in anger and shut the door violently. “What an annoying person!” he complained over it that no sooner had he settled down than the neighbor came to borrow things. His wife and children just stood by the door, not daring to say a word or open the door. Then, they heard the girl running away.
After a while, the door was knocked again. He opened it and found the same girl outside. But this time she was holding two candles, saying, “I thought you might need candles so I’m here to give you these.” All the family were very surprised by what they saw and heard. At that moment, Terry suddenly realized what caused his failure in life. It was his coldness and indifference with others. The person who had cheated him in life was nobody else but himself, for his eyes had been ruled by his unsympathetic mind. Guilty, he was determined to be always generous to others and teach his children to be so from then on. (178words)

Jenny lived in a small village. When she was a child, what she liked to do most was watch the blue sky and enjoy birds flying freely in the sky. She always imagined that some day she could also fly in the sky like a bird.
When Jane was in the fourth grade, one day, her teacher asked them to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up. She poured her heart into her report and wrote that she dreamed to become an airline pilot in the future. She thought that she did a great job because she expressed her real idea successfully. However, to her surprise, her paper came back with an “F” on it. The teacher told her it was nothing but a “fairy tale”, which could never become true. Jenny felt completely disappointed and sad. In her heart, she didn't want to accept that a girl couldn't become a pilot. But as the years went by, Jenny was beaten down by the discouragement again and again from people around her. “Girls can't become airline pilots; never have, never will. You're crazy.” Finally, Jenny gave up her dream.
However, when Jenny studied in her senior year of high school, she met an English teacher called Marsha, who was a strict teacher with high standards but very kind. She often inspired her students to do something meaningful in the future. One day, Mrs. Marsha asked all the students to think about the question: “What will you do in the future?” At that time, Jenny hesitated for a while. She was worried that she would be laughed at again. But soon she felt a rush of the old enthusiasm, and with excitement she wrote down the very old dream of becoming a pilot right away.

Mrs. Marsha told Jenny that her dream was wonderful and she was sure that Jenny would have the abilities and talents to make it come true if she tried her best. Besides, she also encouraged Jenny to keep on trying without worrying about others' opinions. Hearing the words, Jenny felt a relief from her heart and made up her mind to study hard to realize her dream.

五.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“See you at Open House (学校开放日) tonight, Amy,” Evelyn shouted from the school bus window. “Don’t forget to ask your mom if I can come over tomorrow!” “OK!” I called back. I wished I could feel excited about my first Open House at my new school, but I was worried. What would other kids say when they found out my parents can’t hear?
And I wanted Evelyn to visit, but then she’d see how different my house was. My parents use a video phone so they can use sign language to communicate with callers. We also have a light on the wall that flashes when the phone or doorbell rings. Would Evelyn think my house was strange?
That night, Dad drove us to the brightly lit school. We stopped in front of the bulletin board
in the hall. “Look at Amy’s picture!” Mom said, too loud! She does that when she’s excited, because she can’t hear herself. Some older kids turned to stare at us and I wanted to hide.
I led my family into my classroom and looked around. Evelyn was not there yet. Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced her to my family and explained that my parents are deaf. “Oh,” she said. “Well, how do you say welcome in sign language?” “Like this.” I swept my open right hand in toward my body, palm up. She repeated the motion. “Thank you,” Mom said, smiling.
“Nice to meet you.” Ms. Jennings looked surprised. “You speak very well,” she said. In sign language, I repeated what Ms. Jennings had said in case my parents hadn’t read her lips.
“Was it difficult teaching Amy to talk?” Ms. Jennings asked. “Not really,” Dad said in sign language, and I translated so Ms. Jennings understood. “She went to daycare with other hearing kids.”
Some of my classmates were watching us and whispering. Then I noticed Evelyn and her mom standing by the door. “Hi, Amy,” Evelyn waved to me and approached us. “I didn’t know your parents are deaf.”

参考答案:
I couldn’t think of anything to give a response, feeling embarrassed. I could feel blood rushing
into my face and I was really eager to find a hole to hide myself in no time. Much to my surprise, Evelyn added that she thought it was cool when I talked to my parents with my hands. I breathed a sigh of relief. “Do you really think so?” I asked cautiously, still in doubt. Evelyn nodded with a serious look on her face. “It’s like a secret code. Would you teach me some sign language, please?” Staring at her with confusion, I hesitated.
“My new neighbor with a fantastic garden uses sign language too.” Evelyn explained. “Maybe I can surprise her with a greeting next time I visit her.” Admiration mixed with eagerness could be sensed in her voice. I felt a great weight taken off my mind. “Why not?” How foolish I was to have been worried about my family being different from everyone else’s. I turned to get my parents’ attention. “Mom, Dad,” I said, signing, “I’d like you to meet my friend Evelyn and her mom. Can I invite her to come over tomorrow?”
